Spectral analysis of a certain doubly infinite Jacobi operator leads to orthogonality relations for confluent hypergeometric functions, which are called Laguerre functions. This doubly infinite Jacobi operator corresponds to the action of a parabolic element of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$. The Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for the tensor product representation of a positive and a negative discrete series representation of $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ are determined for the parabolic bases. They turn out to be multiples of Jacobi functions. From the interpretation of Laguerre polynomials and functions as overlap coefficients, we obtain a product formula for the Laguerre polynomials, given by a discontinuous integral over Laguerre functions, Jacobi functions and continuous dual Hahn polynomials.
In this article we derive differential recursion relations for the Laguerre functions on the cone C of positive definite real matrices. The highest weight representations of the group Sp(n,R) play a fundamental role. Each such representation acts on a Hilbert space of holomorphic functions on the tube domain C+ i Sym(n,R). We then use the Laplace transform to carry the Lie algebra action over to L^2(C ,dm_t). The differential recursion relations result by restricting to a distinguished three dimensional subalgebra, which is isomorphic to sl(2,R).
I give a combinatorial interpretation of the multiple Laguerre polynomials of the first kind of type II, generalizing the digraph model found by Foata and Strehl for the ordinary Laguerre polynomials. I also give an explicit integral representation for these polynomials, which shows that they form a multidimensional Stieltjes moment sequence whenever $x \le 0$.
We give integral representations for multiple Hermite and multiple Hermite polynomials of both type I and II. We also show how these are connected with double integral representations of certain kernels from random matrix theory.
We give a unified construction of the minimal representation of a finite cover $G$ of the conformal group of a (non necessarily euclidean) Jordan algebra $V$. This representation is realized on the $L^2$-space of the minimal orbit $\mathcal{O}$ of the structure group $L$ of $V$. We construct its corresponding $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{k})$-module and show that it can be integrated to a unitary irreducible representation of $G$ on $L^2(\mathcal{O})$. In particular, we obtain a unified approach to the two most prominent minimal representations, namely the Segal--Shale--Weil representation of the …
In the enduring, fruitful research on spectral differential equations with polynomial eigenfunctions, Koornwinder's generalized Laguerre polynomials are playing a prominent role. Being orthogonal on the positive half-line with respect to the Laguerre weight and an additional point mass $N \ge 0$ at the origin, these polynomials satisfy, for any $α\in\mathbb{N}_{0}$, a linear differential equation of order $2α+4$. In the present paper we establish a new elementary representation of the corresponding 'Laguerre-type' differential operator and show its symmetry with respect to the underlying weigh…
The $X_m$ exceptional orthogonal polynomials (XOP) form a complete set of eigenpolynomials to a differential equation. Despite being complete, the XOP set does not contain polynomials of every degree. Thereby, the XOP escape the Bochner classification theorem. In literature two ways to obtain XOP have been presented. When m=1, Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization of a so-called "flag" was used. For general m, the Darboux transform was applied. Here, we present a possible flag for the X_m exceptional Laguerre polynomials. We can write more about this. We only want to make specific picks when we also …
Exceptional orthogonal Laguerre polynomials can be viewed as an extension of the classical Laguerre polynomials per excluding polynomials of certain order(s) from being eigenfunctions for the corresponding exceptional differential operator. We are interested in the (so-called) Type I $X_1$-Laguerre polynomial sequence $\{L_n^α\}_{n=1}^\infty$, $\text{deg} \,p_n = n$ and $α>0$, where the constant polynomial is omitted. We derive two representations for the polynomials in terms of moments by using determinants. The first representation in terms of the canonical moments is rather cumbersome. We i…
In this paper we study Lp-boundedness properties for area Littlewood-Paley functions associated with heat semigroups for Hermite and Laguerre operators
The bilinear generating function for products of two Laguerre 2D polynomials Lm;n(z; z0) with different arguments is calculated. It corresponds to the formula of Mehler for the generating function of products of two Hermite polynomials. Furthermore, the generating function for mixed products of Laguerre 2D and Hermite 2D polynomials and for products of two Hermite 2D polynomials is calculated. A set of infinite sums over products of two Laguerre 2D polynomials as intermediate step to the generating function for products of Laguerre 2D polynomials is evaluated but these sums possess also proper…
Introducing the discrete probability distribution by means of the Prabhakar (or the three--parameter Mittag--Leffler) function, we establish explicit expressions for raw and factorial moments and also general fractional order moments. Applying an elementary moment inequality we obtain functional upper bounds for the Turánian difference for Prabhakar function. Finally, a Laguerre inequality is proved and functional upper bound has been given for Laguerreian difference for Prabhakar function.
In this paper we consider sequences of polynomials orthogonal with respect to certain discrete Laguerre-Sobolev inner product, with two perturbations (involving derivatives) located inside the oscillatory region for the classical Laguerre polynomials. We focus our attention on the representation of these polynomials in terms of the classical Laguerre polynomials and deduce the coefficients of their corresponding five-term recurrence relation, as well as the asymptotic behavior of these coefficients when the degree of the polynomials tends to infinity. Also, the outer relative asymptotics of or…
We investigate $g$-functions and Lusin's area type integrals related to certain multi-dimensional Dunkl and Laguerre settings. We prove that the considered square functions are bounded on weighted $L^p$, $1<p<\infty$, and from $L^1$ into weak $L^1$.
We investigate g-functions based on semigroups related to multi-dimensional Laguerre function expansions of convolution type. We prove that these operators can be viewed as Calderon-Zygmund operators in the sense of the underlying space of homogeneous type, hence their mapping properties follow from the general theory.
The Sobolev-Laguerre polynomials form an orthogonal polynomial system with respect to a Sobolev-type inner product associated with the Laguerre measure on the positive half-axis and two point masses $M,N > 0$ at the origin involving functions and derivatives. These polynomials have attracted much interest over the last two decades, since they became known to satisfy, for any value of the Laguerre parameter $α\in\mathbb{N}_{0}$, a spectral differential equation of finite order $4α+10$. In this paper we establish a new explicit representation of the corresponding differential operator which cons…
Let $Ω$ be a symmetric cone and $V$ the corresponding simple Euclidean Jordan algebra. In \cite{ado,do,do04,doz2} we considered the family of generalized Laguerre functions on $Ω$ that generalize the classical Laguerre functions on $\mathbb{R}^+$. This family forms an orthogonal basis for the subspace of $L$-invariant functions in $L^2(Ω,dμ_ν)$, where $dμ_ν$ is a certain measure on the cone and where $L$ is the group of linear transformations on $V$ that leave the cone $Ω$ invariant and fix the identity in $Ω$. The space $L^2(Ω,dμ_ν)$ supports a highest weight representation of the group $G$ o…
We study potential operators associated with Laguerre function expansions of convolution and Hermite types, and with Dunkl-Laguerre expansions. We prove qualitatively sharp estimates of the corresponding potential kernels. Then we characterize those $1 \le p,q \le \infty$, for which the potential operators are $L^p-L^q$ bounded. These results are sharp analogues of the classical Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev fractional integration theorem in the Laguerre and Dunkl-Laguerre settings.
We study several fundamental harmonic analysis operators in the multi-dimensional context of the Dunkl harmonic oscillator and the underlying group of reflections isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_2^d$. Noteworthy, we admit negative values of the multiplicity functions. Our investigations include maximal operators, $g$-functions, Lusin area integrals, Riesz transforms and multipliers of Laplace and Laplace-Stieltjes type. By means of the general Calderón-Zygmund theory we prove that these operators are bounded on weighted $L^p$ spaces, $1 < p < \infty$, and from weighted $L^1$ to weighted weak $L^1$. …
We develop a technique of proving standard estimates in the setting of Laguerre function expansions of convolution type, which works for all admissible type multi-indices $α$ in this context. This generalizes a simpler method existing in the literature, but being valid for a restricted range of $α$. As an application, we prove that several fundamental operators in harmonic analysis of the Laguerre expansions, including maximal operators related to the heat and Poisson semigroups, Riesz transforms, Littlewood-Paley-Stein type square functions and multipliers of Laplace and Laplace-Stieltjes tra…
We show that for $δ$ below certain critical indices there are functions whose Jacobi or Laguerre expansions have almost everywhere divergent Cesaro and Riesz means of order $δ$.
In this paper, the structures to a family of biorthogonal polynomials that approximate to the Hermite and Generalized Laguerre polynomials are discussed respectively. Therefore, the asymptotic relation between several orthogonal polynomials and combinatorial polynomials are derived from the systems, which in turn verify the Askey scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. As the applications of these properties, the asymptotic representations of the generalized Buchholz, Laguerre, Ultraspherical(Gegenbauer), Bernoulli, Euler, Meixner and Meixner-Pllaczekare polynomials are derived from t…
Uniform asymptotic expansions involving exponential and Airy functions are obtained for Laguerre polynomials $L_{n}^{(α)}(x)$, as well as complementary confluent hypergeometric functions. The expansions are valid for $n$ large and $α$ small or large, uniformly for unbounded real and complex values of $x$. The new expansions extend the range of computability of $L_n^{(α)}(x)$ compared to previous expansions, in particular with respect to higher terms and large values of $α$. Numerical evidence of their accuracy for real and complex values of $x$ is provided.
It is stated and proved a characterization theorem for Laguerre-Hahn orthogonal polynomials on non-uniform lattices. This theorem proves the equivalence between the Riccati equation for the formal Stieltjes function, linear first-order difference relations for the orthogonal polynomials as well as for the associated polynomials of the first kind, and linear first-order difference relations for the functions of the second kind.
The q-Laguerre polynomials correspond to an indetermined moment problem. For explicit discrete non-N-extremal measures corresponding to Ramanujan's ${}_1ψ_1$-summation we complement the orthogonal q-Laguerre polynomials into an explicit orthogonal basis for the corresponding L^2-space. The dual orthogonal system consists of so-called big q-Bessel functions, which can be obtained as a rigorous limit of the orthogonal system of big q-Jacobi polynomials. Interpretations on the SU(1,1) and E(2) quantum groups are discussed.
We study asymptotics of the partition function $Z_N$ of a Laguerre-type random matrix model when the matrix order $N$ tends to infinity. By using the Deift-Zhou steepest descent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems, we obtain an asymptotic expansion of $\log Z_N$ in powers of $N^{-2}$.
The Fourier transforms of Laguerre functions play the same canonical role in wavelet analysis as do the Hermite functions in Gabor analysis. We will use them as analyzing wavelets in a similar way the Hermite functions were recently by K. Groechenig and Y. Lyubarskii in "Gabor frames with Hermite functions, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 344 157-162 (2007)". Building on the work of K. Seip, "Beurling type density theorems in the unit disc, Invent. Math., 113, 21-39 (1993)", concerning sampling sequences on weighted Bergman spaces, we find a sufficient density condition for constructing frames …
We develop a new point of view to introduce families of functions, which can be identified as generalization of the ordinary trigonometric or hyperbolic functions. They are defined using a procedure based on umbral methods, inspired to the Bessel Calculus of Bochner, Cholewinsky and Haimo. We propose further extensions of the method and of the relevant concepts as well and obtain new families of integral transform allowing the framing of the previous concepts within the context of generalized Borel tranforms.
Following our earlier work, where doubly indexed and irreducible over Q two-variable Laguerre polynomials were introduced, we prove for such polynomials some recurrence formulas and obtain a generating function. In addition, we show how certain sums of such polynomials with a fixed total degree relate to some standard polynomials.
We study negative powers of Laguerre differential operators in $\R$, $d\ge1$. For these operators we prove two-weight $L^p-L^q$ estimates, with ranges of $q$ depending on $p$. The case of the harmonic oscillator (Hermite operator) has recently been treated by Bongioanni and Torrea by using a straightforward approach of kernel estimates. Here these results are applied in certain Laguerre settings. The procedure is fairly direct for Laguerre function expansions of Hermite type, due to some monotonicity properties of the kernels involved. The case of Laguerre function expansions of convolution ty…
In this paper we investigate Lp-boundedness properties for the higher order Riesz transforms associated with Laguerre operators. Also we prove that the k-th Riesz transform is a principal value singular integral operator (modulus a constant times of the function when k is even). To establish our results we exploit a new identity connecting Riesz transforms in the Hermite and Laguerre settings.
In this paper we introduce Laguerre expansions to approximate vector-valued functions expanding on the well-known scalar theorem. We apply this result to approximate $C_0$-semi\-groups and resolvent operators in abstract Banach spaces. We study certain Laguerre functions, its Laplace transforms and the convergence of Laguerre series in Lebesgue spaces. The concluding section of this paper is devote to consider some examples of $C_0$-semigroups: shift, convolution and holomorphic semigroups where some of these results are improved.
The Laguerre calculus is widely used for the inversion of differential operators on the Heisenberg group. We extend the Laguerre calculus for nilpotent groups of step two, and test it in the determining of the fundamental solution of the sub-Laplace operator. We also apply it to find the Szegö kernels of the projection operators to a kind of regular functions on the quaternion Heisenberg group.
A method of proving Hardy's type inequality for orthogonal expansions is presented in a rather general setting. Then sharp multi-dimensional Hardy's inequality associated with the Laguerre functions of convolution type is proved for type index $\al\in[-1/2,\infty)^d$. The case of the standard Laguerre functions is also investigated. Moreover, the sharp analogues of Hardy's type inequality involving $L^1$ norms in place of $H^1$ norms are obtained in both settings.
This note supplements the work of Gomez-Ullate, Kamran and Milson on the X_(1)-Laguerre polynomials which are orthogonal in a weighted Hilbert function space on the positive half-line of the real line. These polynomials are generated by a second-order ordinary linear differential equation with a spectral parameter. Some additional information on the Sturm-Liouville form of this equation is given in this note, together with details of the singular differential operators generated in the weighted Hilbert function space. In particular, structured boundary conditions are given to determine the spe…
Special functions have been used widely in many problems of applied sciences. However, there are considerable numbers of problems in which exact solutions could not be achieved because of undefined sums or integrals involving special functions. These handicaps force researchers to seek new properties of special functions. Many problems that could not be solved so far would be solved by means of these efforts. Therefore in this article, we derived some useful properties and interrelations of each others of Bessel functions, Marcum Q-functions and Laguerre polynomials.
We investigate in detail the mapping properties of the maximal operator associated with the heat-diffusion semigroup corresponding to expansions with respect to multi-dimensional standard Laguerre functions.
We look at some extensions of the Stieltjes-Wigert weight functions. First we replace the variable x by x^2 in a family of weight functions given by Askey in 1989 and we show that the recurrence coefficients of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials can be expressed in terms of a solution of the q-discrete Painlevé III equation. Next we consider the q-Laguerre or generalized Stieltjes-Wigert weight functions with a quadratic transformation and derive recursive equations for the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials. These turn out to be related to the q-discrete Painlevé V eq…
We construct a two-parameter family of actions ω_{k,a} of the Lie algebra sl(2,R) by differential-difference operators on R^N \setminus {0}. Here, k is a multiplicity-function for the Dunkl operators, and a>0 arises from the interpolation of the Weil representation of Mp(N,R) and the minimal unitary representation of O(N+1,2) keeping smaller symmetries. We prove that this action ω_{k,a} lifts to a unitary representation of the universal covering of SL(2,R), and can even be extended to a holomorphic semigroup Ω_{k,a}. In the k\equiv 0 case, our semigroup generalizes the Hermite semigroup studie…
A two-parameter sequence of orthogonal polynomials $\{P_n( x; λ, t)\}_{n\ge 0}$ with respect to the weight function $x^αe^{- λx} ρ_ν(x t),\ α> -1,\ λ, t \ge 0, \ ρ_ν(x)= 2 x^{ν/2} K_ν(2\sqrt x),\ x >0, ν\ge 0$, where $K_ν(z)$ is the modified Bessel function, is investigated. The case $λ=0$ corresponds to the Prudnikov polynomials and $t=0$ is related to the Laguerre polynomials. A special one-parameter case $\{P_n( x; 1-t, t)\}_{n\ge 0},\ t \in [0,1]$ is analyzed as well.
We present results on co-recursive associated Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials which are of interest for the solution of the Chapman-Kolmogorov equations of some birth and death processes with or without absorption. Explicit forms, generating functions, and absolutely continuous part of the spectral measures are given. We derive fourth-order differential equations satisfied by the polynomials with a special attention to some simple limiting cases.
I show that a hypergeometric function ${}_{p}F_q(a_1,\ldots,a_p;b_1,\ldots,b_q;\,\cdot\,)$ with $p \le q$ belongs to the Laguerre--Pólya class $LP^+$ for arbitrarily large $b_{p+1},\ldots,b_q > 0$ if and only if, after a possible reordering, the differences $a_i - b_i$ are nonnegative integers. This result arises as an easy corollary of the case $p=q$ proven two decades ago by Ki and Kim. I also give explicit examples for the case ${}_{1}F_2$.
Convergent expansions are derived for three types of orthogonal polynomials: Charlier, Laguerre and Jacobi. The expansions have asymptotic properties for large values of the degree. The expansions are given in terms of functions that are special cases of the given polynomials. The method is based on expanding integrals in one or two points of the complex plane, these points being saddle points of the phase functions of the integrands.
Homogeneous Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces associated with multi-dimensional Laguerre function expansions of Hermite type with index $α\in [-1/2,\infty)^d\backslash (-1/2,1/2)^d$, $d\geq 1$, are defined and investigated. To achieve expected goals Schwartz type spaces on $R^d_+$ are introduced and then tempered type distributions are constructed. Also, ideas from a recent paper of Bui and Duong on Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces associated with Hermite functions expansions are used. This means, in particular, using molecular decomposition and an appropriate form of a Calderón reproducing f…
We discuss the relationship between the recurrence coefficients of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a semi-classical Laguerre weight and classical solutions of the fourth Painlevé equation. We show that the coefficients in these recurrence relations can be expressed in terms of Wronskians of parabolic cylinder functions which arise in the description of special function solutions of the fourth Painlevé equation.
Expressions for the summation of the series involving the Laguerre polynomials \[S_m(\pmν, \pm p)\equiv e^{-x}\sum_{n=0}^\infty \frac{x^n\,L_n^{(ν)}(x)}{(1\pm ν\pm p)_n}\frac{(f+m)_n}{(f)_n}\] for any non-negative integers $m$ and $p$ are obtained in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions. These results extend previous work in the literature.
By utilizing a two-dimensional extension of a very general series transform given by Bailey, Exton [Indian J. pure appl. Math. 24 (6) (1993), 401-408] deduced a very general double generating relation of a product of a pair of Laguerre polynomials and obtained a number of useful relations with elementary functions, Bessel functions, Hermite polynomials and single series expansions of pairs of Laguerre polynomials. Unfortunately, some of the results given by Exon contain errors and thus this is the aim of this short note to provide the corrected form of these results.
The radial part of the wave function of an electron in a Coulomb potential is the product of a Laguerre polynomial and an exponential with the variable scaled by a factor depending on the degree. This note presents an elementary proof of the orthogonality of wave functions with differing energy levels. It is also shown that this is the only other natural orthogonality for Laguerre polynomials. By expanding in terms of the usual Laguerre polynomial basis an analogous strange orthogonality is obtained for Meixner polynomials.
In this paper we consider the strong asymptotic behavior of Laguerre polynomials in the complex plane. The leading behavior is well known from Perron and Mehler-Heine formulas, but higher order coefficients, which are important in the context of Krall-Laguerre or Laguerre-Sobolev-type orthogonal polynomials, are notoriously difficult to compute. In this paper, we propose the use of an alternative expansion, due to Buchholz, in terms of Bessel functions of the first kind. The coefficients in this expansion can be obtained in a straightforward way using symbolic computation. As an application, w…
In this paper we give sufficient conditions on a measurable function $p:(0,\infty)^n\rightarrow [1,\infty)$ in order that harmonic analysis operators (maximal operators, Riesz transforms, Littlewood--Paley functions and multipliers) associated with $α$-Laguerre polynomial expansions are bounded on the variable Lebesgue space $L^{p(\cdot)} ((0,\infty)^n, μ_α)$, where $dμ_α(x)=2^n\prod_{j=1}^n \frac{x_j^{2α_j+1} e^{-x_j^2}}{Γ(α_j+1)} dx$, being $α=(α_1, \dots, α_n)\in [0,\infty)^n$ and $x=(x_1,\dots,x_n)\in (0,\infty)^n$.
Matrix valued Laguerre polynomials are introduced via a matrix weight function involving several degrees of freedom using the matrix nature. Under suitable conditions on the parameters the matrix weight function satisfies matrix Pearson equations, which allow to introduce shift operators for these polynomials. The shift operators lead to explicit expressions for the structures of these matrix valued Laguerre polynomials, such as a Rodrigues formula, the coefficients in the three-term recurrence, differential operators, and expansion formulas.
