Let p be a prime and let F_pbar be the algebraic closure of the finite field of p elements. Let f(x) be any one variable rational function over F_pbar with n poles of orders d_1, ...,d_n. Suppose p is coprime to d_i for every i. We prove that there exists a Hodge polygon, depending only on d_i's, which is a lower bound to the Newton polygon of L functions of exponential sums of f(x). Moreover, we show that these two polygons coincide if p=1 mod d_i for every i=1,...,n. As a corollary, we obtain a tight lower bound of Newton polygon of Artin-Schreier curve.
In this paper we construct a Dwork theory for general exponential sums over affinoids in Witt towers. Using this, we compute the degree of the $L$-function, its Hodge polygon and examine when the Hodge and Newton polygons coincide.
We introduce and develop $(π,p)$-adic Dwork theory for $L$-functions of exponential sums associated to one-variable rational functions, interpolating $p^k$-order exponential sums over affinoids. Namely, we prove a generalization of the Dwork-Monsky-Reich trace formula and apply it to establish an analytic continuation of the $C$-function $C_f(s,π)$. We compute the lower $(π,p)$-adic bound, the Hodge polygon, for this $C$-function. Along the way, we also show why a strictly $π$-adic theory will not work in this case.
This is our sequel to our previous work on the corresponding generalized Frobenius modules over some big multivariate Robba rings. We will go beyond our previous discussion where we focused on the corresponding analytic functions on polydiscs and polyannuli in the strictly affinoid situation, and general Hodge-Frobenius structures which are admissible in the corresponding context in our previous work.
The $C$-function of $T$-adic exponential sums is studeid. An explicit arithmetic bound is established for the Newton polygon of the $C$-function. This polygon lies above the Hodge polygon. It gives a sup-Hodge bound of the $C$-function of $p$-power order exponential sums.
Building on foundations introduced in a previous paper, we give several p-adic analytic descriptions of the categories of etale Zp-local systems and etale Qp-local systems on an affinoid algebra over a finite extension of Qp (or more generally, over the fraction field of the Witt vectors of a perfect field of characteristic p). These include generalizations of Fontaine's theory of (phi, Gamma)-modules, the refinement of Fontaine's construction introduced by Cherbonnier and Colmez, and a recent description by Fargues and Fontaine in terms of semistable vector bundles on a certain scheme. Our de…
Let P(x) be a one-variable Laurent polynomial of degree (d_1,d_2) over a finite field of characteristic p. For any fixed positive integer s not divisible by p, we prove that the (normalized) p-adic Newton polygon of the L-functions of exponential sums of P(x^s) has a tight lower bound which we call `Hodge-Stickelberger polygon', depending only on d_1,d_2,s, and (p mod s). This Hodge-Stickelberger polygon is a weighted convolution of a `Hodge polygon' for L-function of exponential sum of P(x) and the `Newton polygon' for L-function of exponential sum of x^s (given by the classical Stickelberger…
In this paper, we study the Newton polygons for the $L$-functions of $n$-variable generalized Kloosterman sums. Generally, the Newton polygon has a topological lower bound, called the Hodge polygon. In order to determine the Hodge polygon, we explicitly construct a basis of the top dimensional Dwork cohomology. Using Wan's decomposition theorem and diagonal local theory, we obtain when the Newton polygon coincides with the Hodge polygon. In particular, we concretely get the slope sequence for $L$-function of $\bar{F}(\barλ,x):=\sum_{i=1}^nx_i^{a_i}+\barλ\prod_{i=1}^nx_i^{-1}$.
$T$-adic exponential sums associated to a Laurent polynomial $f$ are introduced. They interpolate all classical $p^m$-power order exponential sums associated to $f$. The Hodge bound for the Newton polygon of $L$-functions of $T$-adic exponential sums is established. This bound enables us to determine, for all $m$, the Newton polygons of $L$-functions of $p^m$-power order exponential sums associated to an $f$ which is ordinary for $m=1$. Deeper properties of $L$-functions of $T$-adic exponential sums are also studied. Along the way, new open problems about the $T$-adic exponential sum itself ar…
We construct motives over the rational numbers associated with symmetric power moments of Kloosterman sums, and prove that their L-functions extend meromorphically to the complex plane and satisfy a functional equation conjectured by Broadhurst and Roberts. Although the motives in question turn out to be "classical", we compute their Hodge numbers by means of the irregular Hodge filtration on their realizations as exponential mixed Hodge structures. We show that all Hodge numbers are either zero or one, which implies potential automorphy thanks to recent results of Patrikis and Taylor.
Let Delta be an integral convex polytope containing the origin of dimension n in the n-dim real space and it is simplicial at all origin-less facets. Let A(Delta) be the space of all Laurent polynomials f parametered by its coefficients supported on the interior of Delta with with prescribed vertices. In this paper we prove that, if the interior points of Delta and its vertices generate almost all integral points in the cone of Delta, then there is a Zariski dense open subset U in A(Delta) defined over the rationals such that for every f in U(bar{Q}) and for p large enough the Newton polygon o…
The purpose of this article is to prove a ``Newton over Hodge'' result for exponential sums on curves. Let $X$ be a smooth proper curve over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p\geq 3$ and let $V \subset X$ be an affine curve. For a regular function $\overline{f}$ on $V$, we may form the $L$-function $L(\overline{f},V,s)$ associated to the exponential sums of $\overline{f}$. In this article, we prove a lower estimate on the Newton polygon of $L(\overline{f},V,s)$. The estimate depends on the local monodromy of $f$ around each point $x \in X-V$. This confirms a hope of Deligne tha…
The L-function of a non-degenerate twisted Witt extension is proved to be a polynomial. Its Newton polygon is proved to lie above the Hodge polygon of that extension. And the Newton polygons of the Gauss-Heilbronn sums are explicitly determined, generalizing the Stickelberger theorem.
The purpose of this article is to study Newton polygons of certain abelian $L$-functions on curves. Let $X$ be a smooth affine curve over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $ρ:π_1(X) \to \mathbb{C}_p^\times$ be a finite character of order $p^n$. By previous work of the first author, the Newton polygon $\mathrm{NP}(ρ)$ lies above a `Hodge polygon' $\mathrm{HP}(ρ)$, which is defined using local ramification invariants of $ρ$. In this article we study the touching between these two polygons. We prove that $\mathrm{NP}(ρ)$ and $\mathrm{HP}(ρ)$ share a vertex if and only if a corresponding verte…
Let $p$ be a prime number. Every $n$-variable polynomial $f(\underline x)$ over a finite field of characteristic $p$ defines an Artin--Schreier--Witt tower of varieties whose Galois group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_p$. Our goal of this paper is to study the Newton polygon of the $L$-function associated to a finite character of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ and a generic polynomial whose convex hull is an $n$-dimensional paralleltope $Δ$. We denote this polygon by $\mathrm{GNP}(Δ)$. We prove a lower bound of $\mathrm{GNP}(Δ)$, which is called the improved Hodge polygon $\mathrm{IHP}(Δ)$. We show that $\math…
We give a construction of a new $p$-adic Maass-Shimura operator defined on an affinoid subdomain of the preperfectoid $p$-adic universal cover $\mathcal{Y}$ of a modular curve $Y$. We define a new notion of $p$-adic modular forms as sections of a certain sheaf $\mathcal{O}_Δ$ of "nearly rigid functions" which transform under the action of subgroups of the Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathcal{Y}/Y)$ by $\mathcal{O}_Δ^{\times}$-valued weight characters. This extends Katz's notion of $p$-adic modular forms as functions on the Igusa tower $Y^{\mathrm{Ig}}$; indeed we may recover Katz's theory by re…
Let d>2 and let p be a prime coprime to d. Let Z_pbar be the ring of integers of Q_pbar. Suppose f(x) is a degree-d polynomial over Qbar and Z_pbar. Let P be a prime ideal over p in the ring of integers of Q(f), where Q(f) is the number field generated by coefficients of f in Qbar. Let A^d be the dimension-d affine space over Qbar, identified with the space of coefficients of degree-d monic polynomials. Let NP(f mod P) denote the p-adic Newton polygon of L(f mod P;T). Let HP(A^d) denote the p-adic Hodge polygon of A^d. We prove that there is a Zariski dense open subset U defined over Q in A^d …
For a polynomial $f(x)$ in $(\mathbb{Z}_p\cap \mathbb{Q})[x]$ of degree $d>2$ let $L(f \bmod p;T)$ be the $L$-function of the exponential sum of $f \bmod p$. Let $\mathrm{NP}(f \bmod p)$ denote the Newton polygon of $L(f \bmod p;T)$. Let $\mathrm{HP}(f)$ denote the Hodge polygon of $f$, which is the lower convex hull in the real plane of the points $(n,n(n+1)/(2d))$ for $0\leq n\leq d-1$. We prove that there is a Zariski dense subset $\mathcal{U}$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ in the space $\mathbb{A}^d$ of degree-$d$ monic polynomials over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that for all $f$ in $\mathcal{U}(\mathb…
The classical $n$-variable Kloosterman sums over finite fields are well understood by Deligne's theorem from complex point of view and by Sperber's theorem from $p$-adic point of view. In this paper, we study the complex and $p$-adic estimates of inverted $n$-variable Kloosterman sums, addressing a question of N. Katz (1995). We shall give two complex estimates. The first one is elementary based on Gauss sums. The second estimate is deeper, depending on the cohomological results of Adolphson-Sperber, Denef-Loeser and Fu for twisted toric exponential sums. This deeper result assumes that the ch…
Let $p$ be a prime number. Every two-variable polynomial $f(x_1, x_2)$ over a finite field of characteristic $p$ defines an Artin--Schreier--Witt tower of surfaces whose Galois group is isomorphic to $\mathbb Z_p$. Our goal of this paper is to study the Newton polygon of the $L$-functions associated to a finite character of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ and a generic polynomial whose convex hull is a fixed triangle $Δ$. We denote this polygon by $\textrm{GNP}(Δ)$. We prove a lower bound of $\textrm{GNP}(Δ)$, which we call the improved Hodge polygon $\textrm{IHP}(Δ)$, and we conjecture that $\textrm{GNP}(Δ)$ …
We study the p-adic valuations of roots of L-functions associated with certain families of exponential sums of Laurent polynomials in n variables over a finite field. The families we consider are reflection and Kloosterman variants of diagonal polynomials. Using decomposition theorems of Wan, we determine the Newton and Hodge polygons of a non-degenerate Laurent polynomial in one of these families.
