For every N > 0 there exists a group of deficiency less than -N that arises as the fundamental group of a smooth homology 4-sphere and also as the fundamental group of the complement of a compact contractible submanifold of the 4-sphere. A group is the fundamental group of the complement of a contractible submanifold of the n-sphere, n > 4, if and only if it is the fundamental group of a homology n-sphere. There exist fundamental groups of homology n-spheres, n > 4, that cannot arise as the fundamental group of the complement of a contractible submanifold of the 4-sphere.
We study some properties of transverse contact structures on small Seifert manifolds, and we apply them to the classification of tight contact structures on a family of small Seifert manifolds.
In this paper we prove that for all $n=4k-2$, $k\ge2$ there exists closed $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds $M$ with negative sectional curvature that do not have the homotopy type of a locally symmetric space, such that $π_{1}(\mathcal{T}^{<0}(M))$ is non-trivial. $\mathcal{T}^{<0}(M)$ denotes the Teichmüller space of all negatively curved Riemannian metrics on $M$, which is the topological quotient of the space of all negatively curved metrics modulo the space of self-diffeomorphisms of $M$ that are homotopic to the identity. Gromov Thurston branched cover manifolds provide examples of ne…
Given a knot K in the three-sphere, we address the question: which Dehn surgeries on K bound negative-definite four-manifolds? We show that the answer depends on a number m(K), which is a smooth concordance invariant. We study the properties of this invariant, and compute it for torus knots.
We study the bounded fundamental class in the top dimensional bounded cohomology of negatively curved manifolds with infinite volume. We prove that the bounded fundamental class of $M$ vanishes if $M$ is geometrically finite. Furthermore, when $M$ is a $\mathbb{R}$-rank one locally symmetric space, we show that the bounded fundamental class of $M$ vanishes if and only if the Riemannian volume form on $M$ is the differential of a bounded differential form on $M$.
We show that if a closed atoroidal 3-manifold M contains a genuine lamination, then it is group negatively curved in the sense of Gromov. Specifically, we exploit the structure of the non-product complementary regions of the genuine lamination and then apply the first author's Ubiquity Theorem to show that M satisfies a linear isoperimetric inequality.
In this paper we prove that for all $n=4k-2$, $k\ge2$ there exists a closed smooth complex hyperbolic manifold $M$ with real dimension $n$ having non-trivial $π_1(\mathcal{T}^{<0}(M))$.
We show that, for any given 3-manifold M, there are at most finitely many hyperbolic knots K in the 3-sphere and fractions p/q (with q > 22), such that M is obtained by p/q surgery along K. This is a corollary of the following result. If M is obtained by Dehn filling the cusps of a hyperbolic 3-manifold X, where each filling slope has length more than 2 π+ ε, then, for any given M and ε> 0, there are only finitely many possibilities for X and for the filling slopes. In this paper, we also investigate the length of boundary slopes, and sequences of negatively curved metrics on a given 3-manifol…
Let X be a simply-connected closed oriented 4-manifold and A an embedded surface of genus g and negative self-intersection -N. We show that for fixed genus g there is an upper bound on N if the homology class of A is divisible or characteristic. In particular, for genus zero, there is a lower bound on the self-intersection of embedded spheres in these kinds of homology classes. This question is related to a problem from the Kirby list.
We prove that any one-relator group $G$ is the fundamental group of a compact Sasakian manifold if and only if $G$ is either finite cyclic or isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface of genus g > 0 with at most one orbifold point of order $n \geq 1$. We also classify all groups of deficiency at least two that are also the fundamental group of some compact Sasakian manifold.
In this paper we study the rigidity of infinite volume 3-manifolds with sectional curvature $-b^2\le K\le -1$ and finitely generated fundamental group. In-particular, we generalize the Sullivan's quasi-conformal rigidity for finitely generated fundamental group with empty dissipative set to negative variable curvature 3-manifolds. We also generalize the rigidity of Hamenstädt or more recently Besson-Courtois-Gallot, to 3-manifolds with infinite volume and geometrically infinite fundamental group.
For a smooth manifold $M$ we define the Teichmüller space $\cT(M)$ of all Riemannian metrics on $M$ and the Teichmüller space $\cT^ε(M)$ of $ε$-pinched negatively curved metrics on $M$, where $0\leqε\leq\infty$. We prove that if $M$ is hyperbolic the natural inclusion $\cT^ε(M)\hookrightarrow\cT(M)$ is, in general, not homotopically trivial. In particular, $\cT^ε(M)$ is, in general, not contractible.
We study noncompact, complete, finite volume, Riemannian 4-manifolds $M$ with sectional curvature $-1<K<0$. We prove that $π_1 M$ cannot be a 3-manifold group. A classical theorem of Gromov says that $M$ is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold $\M$ with boundary $\partial\barM$. We show that for each $π_1$-injective boundary component $C$ of $\M$, the map $i_*$ induced by inclusion $i\colon C\rightarrow \M$ has infinite index image $i_*(π_1 C)$ in $π_1 \M$. We also prove that $M$ cannot be homotoped to be contained in $\partial\M$.
We extend the vanishing theorem for the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a manifold with positive scalar curvature to the case when the curvature is allowed to be negative on a set of small volume. (The precise curvature bounds are described in the paper.) The idea is to combine the method of `semigroup domination' with the Weitzenbock formula. The same curvature hypothesis implies the vanishing of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of any finite covering space. We also show that, in high dimensions, a spin manifold with mostly positive scalar curvature in fact admits a metric of positive scalar curvatu…
We introduce a geometric evolution equation for 3-manifolds with sectional curvature of one sign which is in some sense dual to the Ricci flow. On a closed 3-manifold with negative sectional curvature, we establish short time existence and a pair of monotonicity formulas for solutions to the flow. One of these formulas shows that, provided the solution exists for all time, the metric approaches hyperbolic in an integral sense. Long time existence is still an open problem.
Recently Andrei Teleman considered instanton moduli spaces over negative definite four-manifolds $X$ with $b_2(X) \geq 1$. If $b_2(X)$ is divisible by four and $b_1(X) =1$ a gauge-theoretic invariant can be defined; it is a count of flat connections modulo the gauge group. Our first result shows that if such a moduli space is non-empty and the manifold admits a connected sum decomposition $X \cong X_1 # X_2$ then both $b_2(X_1)$ and $b_2(X_2)$ are divisible by four; this rules out a previously natural appearing source of 4-manifolds with non-empty moduli space. We give in some detail a constru…
Under mild assumptions on a group G, we prove that the class of complete Riemannian n-manifolds of uniformly bounded negative sectional curvatures and with the fundamental groups isomorphic to G breaks into finitely many tangential homotopy types. It follows that many aspherical manifolds do not admit complete negatively curved metrics with prescribed curvature bounds.
A torus manifold $M$ is a $2n$-dimensional orientable manifold with an effective action of an $n$-dimensional torus such that $M^T\neq \emptyset$. In this paper we discuss the classification of torus manifolds which admit an invariant metric of non-negative curvature. If $M$ is a simply connected torus manifold which admits such a metric, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a quotient of a free linear torus action on a product of spheres. We also classify rationally elliptic torus manifolds $M$ with $H^{\text{odd}}(M;\mathbb{Z})=0$ up homeomorphism.
We show that various classes of products of manifolds do not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. Exploiting the Ruelle-Sullivan cohomology class, we prove that the product of a negatively curved manifold with a rational homology sphere does not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. We extend this result to products of finitely many negatively curved manifolds of dimensions at least three with a rational homology sphere that has vanishing simplicial volume. As an application of this study, we obtain new examples of manifolds that do not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms, inc…
