We extend the theory of generalized divisors so as to work on any scheme $X$ satisfying the condition $S_2$ of Serre. We define a generalized notion of Gorenstein biliaison for schemes in projective space. With this we give a new proof in a stronger form of the theorem of Gaeta, that standard determinantal schemes are in the Gorenstein biliaison class of a complete intersection.
We also show, for schemes of codimension three in ${\mathbb P}^n$, that the relation of Gorenstein biliaison is equivalent to the relation of even strict Gorenstein liaison.
We generalize Gaeta's Theorem to the family of determinantal schemes. In other words, we show that the schemes defined by minors of a fixed size of a matrix with polynomial entries belong to the same G-biliaison class of a complete intersection whenever they have maximal possible codimension, given the size of the matrix and of the minors that define them.
We present a new class of examples of base points for the generalized theta divisor on the moduli space of semistable vector bundles of trivial determinant on a compact Riemann surface and we prove that for sufficiently large rank the base locus is positive dimensional.
We produce a lower bound for the dimension of the base locus of the generalized theta divisor on the moduli space SU_C(r) of semistable vector bundles of rank r and trivial determinant on a smooth curve C of genus g > 1.
The classical De Jonquieres and MacDonald formulas describe the virtual number of divisors with prescribed multiplicities in a linear system on an algebraic curve. We establish an essentially optimal result concerning the enumerative validity of these formulas in the case of a general curve of genus g.
Given a smooth projective curve X, we give effective very ampleness bounds for generalized theta divisors on the moduli spaces $SU_X(r,d)$ and $U_X(r,d)$ of semistable vector bundles of rank r and degree d on X with fixed, respectively arbitrary, determinant.
We study base points of the generalized Theta-divisor on the moduli space of vector bundles on a smooth algebraic curve X of genus g defined over an algebraically closed field. To do so, we use the derived categories D(Pic(X)), D(Jac(X)), and the equivalence between them given by the Fourier-Mukai transform coming from the Poincaré bundle. The vector bundles P(m) on the curve X defined by Raynaud play a central role in this description. Indeed, we show that a vector bundle E is a base point of the generalized Theta-divisor, if and only if there exists a nontrivial homomorphism P(rk(E)g+1) --> …
This paper shows that on the moduli space of semi-stable vector bundles of fixed rank and determinant (of any degree) on a smooth curve of genus at least two, the base locus of the generalized theta divisor is large provided the rank is sufficiently large. It also shows that the base locus is large for positive multiples of the theta divisor. This work extends results already known for the case where the determinant is of degree zero.
Given a finite, flat morphism between embeddable noetherian schemes of pure dimension 1, we define the notion of direct and inverse image for generalized divisors and generalized line bundles. In the case when we deal with (possibly reducible, non-reduced) projective curves over a field and the codomain curve is smooth, we introduce the compactified Jacobians parametrizing torsion-free rank-1 sheaves and we study the Norm and inverse image maps between compactified Jacobians. Finally, we introduce and study the Prym stack defined as the kernel of the Norm map.
In this paper we investigate generalized theta divisors $Θ_r$ in the moduli spaces $\mathcal{U}_C(r,r)$ of semistable vector bundles on a curve $C$ of genus $2$. We provide a desingularization $Φ$ of $Θ_r$ in terms of a projective bundle $π:\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{V})\to\mathcal{U}_C(r-1,r)$ which parametrizes extensions of stable vector bundles on the base by $\mathcal{O}_C$. Then, we study the composition of $Φ$ with the well known theta map $θ$. We prove that, when it is restricted to the general fiber of $π$, we obtain a linear embedding.
We study the greatest common divisor problem for torus invariant blowing-up morphisms of nonsingular toric Fano varieties. Our main result applies the theory of Okounkov bodies together with an arithmetic form of Cartan's Second Main theorem, which has been established by Ru and Vojta. It also builds on Silverman's geometric concept of greatest common divisor. As a special case of our results, we deduce a bound for the generalized greatest common divisor of pairs of nonzero algebraic numbers.
In this note we characterize polarized parallel transport operators on irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties which are deformations of generalized Kummer varieties. We then apply such characterization to show the existence of ample uniruled divisors on these varieties and derive some interesting consequences on their Chow group of 0-cycles.
We apply Vojta's conjecture to blowups and deduce a number of deep statements regarding (generalized) greatest common divisors on varieties, in particular on projective space and on abelian varieties. Special cases of these statements generalize earlier results and conjectures. We also discuss the relationship between generalized greatest common divisors and the divisibility sequences attached to algebraic groups, and we apply Vojta's conjecture to obtain a strong bound on the divisibility sequences attached to abelian varieties of dimension at least two.
We give an alternative proof of a recent result by Pasquier stating that for a generalized flag variety $X=G/P$ and an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor $D$ stable with respect to a Borel subgroup the pair $(X,D)$ is Kawamata log terminal if and only if $\lfloor D\rfloor=0$.
We prove an abstract modularity result for classes of Heegner divisors in the generalized Jacobian of a modular curve associated to a cuspidal modulus. Extending the Gross-Kohnen-Zagier theorem, we prove that the generating series of these classes is a weakly holomorphic modular form of weight 3/2. Moreover, we show that any harmonic Maass forms of weight 0 defines a functional on the generalized Jacobian. Combining these results, we obtain a unifying framework and new proofs for the Gross-Kohnen-Zagier theorem and Zagier's modularity of traces of singular moduli, together with new geometric i…
We investigate effectiveness and ampleness of adjoint divisors of the form $aL+bK_X$, where $L$ is a suitably positive line bundle on a smooth projective variety $X$ and $a,b$ are positive integers.
Let $f \colon X \to B$ be a nonisotrivial complex elliptic surface and let $\mathcal{D} \subset X$ be an integral divisor dominating $B$. We study finiteness related properties of generalized $(S, \mathcal{D})$-integral sections $σ\colon B \to X$ of $X$. These integral sections $σ$ correspond to rational points in $A(K)$ which satisfy the set-theoretic condition $f ( σ(B) \cap \mathcal{D})\subset S$, where $S \subset B$ is an arbitrary given subset. For $S \subset B$ finite, the set of $(S, \mathcal{D})$-integral sections of $X$ is finite by the well-known Siegel theorem. In this article, we e…
We investigate a relationship between MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisors functions and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. This determines a recurrence relation to compute these functions, as well as proving a conjecture of MacMahon about their general form by relating them to quasi-modular forms. These functions arise as solutions to a curve-counting problem on Abelian surfaces.
We determine the cone of nef divisors on the Voronoi compactification A_g^* of the moduli space A_g of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g for genus g=2,3. As a corollary we obtain that the spaces A_g^*(n) with level-n structure are a minimal, resp. canonical, model for g=2, n>=4, resp. n>=5 and g=3, n>=3, resp. n>=4. We give two proofs: The easy and quick one reduces the problem to \bar M_g where we can use a result of Faber. This approach cannot be generalized to higher genus g. The main point of the paper is, therefore, to give a second proof using theta functions and a r…
In this work we study the generalized Weierstrass semigroup $\widehat{H} (\mathbf{P}_m)$ at an $m$-tuple $\mathbf{P}_m = (P_{1}, \ldots , P_{m})$ of rational points on certain curves admitting a plane model of the form $f(y) = g(x)$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, where ${f(T),g(T)\in \mathbb{F}_q[T]}$. In particular, we compute the generating set $\widehatΓ(\mathbf{P}_m)$ of $\widehat{H} (\mathbf{P}_m)$ and, as a consequence, we explicit a basis for Riemann-Roch spaces of divisors with support in $\{P_{1}, \ldots , P_{m}\}$ on these curves, generalizing results of Maharaj, Matthews, and Pirsic.
We will introduce a regularization for $p$-adic multiple zeta values and show that the generalized double shuffle relations hold. This settles a question raised by Deligne, given as a project in Arizona winter school 2002. Our approach is to use the theory of Coleman functions on the moduli space of genus zero curves with marked points and its compactification. The main ingredients are the analytic continuation of Coleman functions to the normal bundle of divisors at infinity and definition of a special tangential base point on the moduli space.
