The main goal of this paper is to show a counterexample to the following conjecture:
{\bf Conjecture} [Meeks, Sullivan]: If $f:M\to \mathbb{R}^3$ is a complete proper minimal immersion where $M$ is a Riemannian surface without boundary and with finite genus, then $M$ is parabolic.
We have proved:
{\bf Theorem:} There exists $χ: D\longrightarrow \mathbb{R}^3$, a conformal proper minimal immersion defined on the unit disk.
For a smooth immersion $f$ from the punctured disk $D\backslash\{0\}$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$ extendable continuously at the puncture, if its mean curvature is square integrable and the measure of $f(D)\cap B_{r_k}=o(r_k)$ for a sequence $r_k\to 0$, we show that the Riemannian surface $(D_r\backslash\{0\},g)$ where $g$ is the induced metric is conformally equivalent to the unit Euclidean punctured disk, for any $r\in(0,1)$. For a locally $W^{2,2}$ Lipschitz immersion $f$ from the punctured disk $D_2\backslash\{0\}$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$, if $\|\nabla f\|_{L^\infty}$ is finite and the second fundamen…
This paper is concerned with the existence of conformal metrics of the disk with prescribed Gaussian and geodesic curvatures. Being more specific, given nonnegative smooth functions $K: \overline{\mathbb{D}} \to \mathbb{R}$ and $h: \partial \mathbb{D} \to \mathbb{R}$, we consider the problem of finding a conformal metric realizing $K$ and $h$ as Gaussian and geodesic curvatures, respectively. This is the natural analogue of the classical Nirenberg problem posed on the disk. As we shall see, both curvatures play a role in the existence of solutions. Indeed we are able to give existence results …
Surface parameterizations have been widely used in computer graphics and geometry processing. In particular, as simply-connected open surfaces are conformally equivalent to the unit disk, it is desirable to compute the disk conformal parameterizations of the surfaces. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for the conformal parameterization of a simply-connected open surface onto the unit disk, which significantly speeds up the computation, enhances the conformality and stability, and guarantees the bijectivity. The conformality distortions at the inner region and on the boundary are corr…
We prove that the area of a free boundary minimal surface $Σ^2 \subset B^n$, where $B^n$ is a geodesic ball contained in a round hemisphere $\mathbb{S}^n_+$, is at least as big as that of a geodesic disk with the same radius as $B^n$; equality is attained only if $Σ$ coincides with such a disk. More generally, we prove analogous results for a class of conformally euclidean ambient spaces. This follows work of Brendle and Fraser-Schoen in the euclidean setting.
Surface parameterization is widely used in computer graphics and geometry processing. It simplifies challenging tasks such as surface registrations, morphing, remeshing and texture mapping. In this paper, we present an efficient algorithm for computing the disk conformal parameterization of simply-connected open surfaces. A double covering technique is used to turn a simply-connected open surface into a genus-0 closed surface, and then a fast algorithm for parameterization of genus-0 closed surfaces can be applied. The symmetry of the double covered surface preserves the efficiency of the comp…
We develop a global twistor correspondence for pseudo-Riemannian conformal structures of signature (++--) with self-dual Weyl curvature. Near the conformal class of the standard indefinite product metric on S^2 x S^2, there is an infinite-dimensional moduli space of such conformal structures, and each of these has the surprising global property that its null geodesics are all periodic. Each such conformal structure arises from a family of holomorphic disks in CP_3 with boundary on some totally real embedding of RP^3 into CP_3. An interesting sub-class of these conformal structures are represen…
In this paper a new connection between the discrete conformal geometry problem of disk pattern construction and the continuous conformal geometry problem of metric uniformization is presented. In a nutshell, we discuss how to construct disk patterns by optimizing an objective function, which turns out to be intimately related to hyperbolic volume. With the use of random Delaunay triangulations we then average this objective function to construct an objective function on the metrics conformal to a fixed one. Finally using this averaged objective function we may reprove the uniformization theore…

In this work, we consider $M=(\mathbb{B}^3_r,\bar{g})$ as the Euclidean three-ball with radius $r$ equipped with the metric $\bar{g}=e^{2h}\left\langle , \right\rangle$ conformal to the Euclidean metric. We show that if a free boundary CMC surface $Σ$ in $M$ satisfies a pinching condition on the length of the traceless second fundamental tensor which involves the support function of $Σ$, the positional conformal vector field $\vec{x}$ and its potential function $σ,$ then either $Σ$ is a disk or $Σ$ is an annulus rotationally symmetric. In a particular case, we construct an example of minimal s…
We prove Runge-type theorems and universality results for locally univalent holomorphic and meromorphic functions. Refining a result of M. Heins, we also show that there is a universal bounded locally univalent function on the unit disk. These results are used to prove that on any hyperbolic simply connected plane domain there exist universal conformal metrics with prescribed constant curvature.
We present a constructive approach to surface comparison realizable by a polynomial-time algorithm. We determine the "similarity" of two given surfaces by solving a mass-transportation problem between their conformal densities. This mass transportation problem differs from the standard case in that we require the solution to be invariant under global Möbius transformations. We present in detail the case where the surfaces to compare are disk-like; we also sketch how the approach can be generalized to other types of surfaces.
We propose a novel meshless method to compute harmonic maps and conformal maps for surfaces embedded in the Euclidean 3-space, using point cloud data only. Given a surface, or a point cloud approximation, we simply use the standard cubic lattice to approximate its $ε$-neighborhood. Then the harmonic map of the surface can be approximated by discrete harmonic maps on lattices. The conformal map, or the surface uniformization, is achieved by minimizing the Dirichlet energy of the harmonic map while deforming the target surface of constant curvature. We propose algorithms and numerical examples f…
We are studying the harmonic and twistor equation on Lorentzian surfaces, that is a two dimensional orientable manifold with a metric of signature $(1,1)$. We will investigate the properties of the solutions of these equations and try to relate the conformal invariant dimension of the space of harmonic and twistor spinors to the natural conformal invariants given by the Lorentzian metric. We will introduce the notion of semi-conformally flat surfaces and establish a complete classification of the possible dimensions for this family.
Let $g=e^{2u}(dx^2+dy^2)$ be a conformal metric defined on the unit disk of $\mathbf{C}$. We give an estimate of $\|\nabla u\|_{L^{2,\infty}(D_\frac{1}{2})}$ when $\|K(g)\|_{L^1}$ is small and $\frac{μ(B_r^g(z),g)}{πr^2}<Λ$ for any $r$ and $z\in D_\frac{3}{4}$. Then we will use this estimate to study the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of a conformal metric sequence with bounded $\|K\|_{L^1}$ and give some applications.
In this paper we perform a blow-up and quantization analysis of the fractional Liouville equation in dimension $1$. More precisely, given a sequence $u_k :\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ of solutions to \begin{equation} (-Δ)^\frac{1}{2} u_k =K_ke^{u_k}\quad \text{in }\mathbb{R}, \end{equation} with $K_k$ bounded in $L^\infty$ and $e^{u_k}$ bounded in $L^1$ uniformly with respect to $k$, we show that up to extracting a subsequence $u_k$ can blow-up at (at most) finitely many points $B=\{a_1,\dots, a_N\}$ and either (i) $u_k\to u_\infty$ in $W^{1,p}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}\setminus B)$ and $K_ke^{u_k} \stac…
Conformal mapping, a classical topic in complex analysis and differential geometry, has become a subject of great interest in the area of surface parameterization in recent decades with various applications in science and engineering. However, most of the existing conformal parameterization algorithms only focus on simply-connected surfaces and cannot be directly applied to surfaces with holes. In this work, we propose two novel algorithms for computing the conformal parameterization of multiply-connected surfaces. We first develop an efficient method for conformally parameterizing an open sur…
We study a recent general criterion for the injectivity of the conformal immersion of a Riemannian manifold into higher dimensional Euclidean space, and show how it gives rise to important conditions for Weierstrass-Ennerper lifts defined in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ endowed with a conformal metric. Among the corollaries, we obtain a Becker type condition and a sharp condition depending on the Gaussian curvature and the diameter for an immersed geodesically convex minimal disk in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to be embedded. Extremal configurations for the criteria are also determined, and can only occur on…
For a harmonic diffeomorphism between the Poincaré disks, Wan showed the equivalence between the boundedness of the Hopf differential and the quasi-conformality. In this paper, we will generalize this result from quadratic differentials to $r$-differetials. We study the relationship between bounded holomorphic $r$-differentials and the induced curvature of the associated harmonic maps from the unit disk to the symmetric space $SL(r,\mathbb R)/SO(r)$ arising from cyclic/subcyclic harmonic Higgs bundles. Also, we show the equivalences between the boundedness of holomorphic differentials and havi…
Conformal surface parameterization is useful in graphics, imaging and visualization, with applications to texture mapping, atlas construction, registration, remeshing and so on. With the increasing capability in scanning and storing data, dense 3D surface meshes are common nowadays. While meshes with higher resolution better resemble smooth surfaces, they pose computational difficulties for the existing parameterization algorithms. In this work, we propose a novel parallelizable algorithm for computing the global conformal parameterization of simply-connected surfaces via partial welding maps.…
