We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a free-boundary governed by surface tension. The solution is found using a topological fixed-point theorem for a nonlinear iteration scheme, requiring at each step, the solution of a model linear problem consisting of the time-dependent Stokes equation with linearized mean-curvature forcing on the boundary. We use energy methods to establish new types of spacetime inequalities that allow us to find a unique weak solution to this problem. We then prove regularity of the weak solution, and establish the a priori estimates required by the nonlinear iteration process.
In this paper, we consider the three-dimensional inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity in presence of vacuum over bounded domains. Global-in-time unique strong solution is proved to exist when $\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2}$ is suitably small with arbitrary large initial density. This generalizes all the previous results even for the constant viscosity.
We show the existence and the regularity properties of the weak solutions to the two-dimensional stationary incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity coefficient, by analyzing a fourth-order nonlinear elliptic equation for the stream function. The density function and the viscosity coefficient may have large variations. In addition, we formulate the solutions for the parallel, concentric and radial flows respectively, and as examples we calculate the solutions with piecewise-constant viscosity coefficients explicitly.
We consider the motion of incompressible viscous fluids bounded above by a free surface and below by a solid surface in the $N$-dimensional Euclidean space for $N\geq 2$ when the gravity is not taken into account. The aim of this paper is to show the global solvability of the Naiver-Stokes equations with a free surface, describing the above-mentioned motion, in the maximal $L_p\text{-}L_q$ regularity class. Our approach is based on the maximal $L_p\text{-}L_q$ regularity with exponential stability for the linearized equations, and solutions to the original nonlinear problem are also exponentia…
Existence of local-in-time unique solution and loss of smoothness of full Magnet-Hydro-Dynamics system (MHD) is considered for periodic initial data. The result is proven using Fujita-Kato's method in $\ell^1$ based (for the Fourier coefficients) functional spaces enabling us to easily estimate nonlinear terms in the system as well as solutions to Maxwells's equations. A loss of smoothness result is shown for the velocity and magnetic field. It comes from the damped-wave operator which does not have any smoothing effect.
In this paper, we study the initial and boundary value problem of the Navier-Stokes equations in the half space. We prove the unique existence of weak solution $u\in L^q(\R_+\times (0,T))$ with $\nabla u\in L^{\frac{q}{2}}_{loc}(\R_+\times (0,T))$ for a short time interval when the initial data $h\in {B}_q^{-\frac{2}{q}}(\R_+)$ and the boundary data $ g\in L^q(0,T;B^{-\frac{1}{q}}_q(\Rn))+L^q(\Rn;B^{-\frac{1}{2q}}_q(0,T)) $ with normal component $g_n\in L^q(0,T;\dot{B}^{-\frac{1}{q}}_q(\Rn))$, $n+2<q<\infty$ are given.
We investigate large time existence of solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq equations with spatially almost periodic large data when the density stratification is sufficiently large. In 1996, Kimura and Herring \cite{KH} examined numerical simulations to show a stabilizing effect due to the stratification. They observed scattered two-dimensional pancake-shaped vortex patches lying almost in the horizontal plane. Our result is a mathematical justification of the presence of such two-dimensional pancakes. To show the existence of solutions for large times, we use $\ell^1$-norm of amplitudes…
In this paper, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of solution to d-dimensional (for $d=2,3$) incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with initial density being bounded from above and below by some positive constants, and with initial velocity $u_0\in H^s(\R^2)$ for $s>0$ in 2-D, or $u_0\in H^1(\R^3)$ satisfying $|u_0|_{L^2}|\na u_0|_{L^2}$ being sufficiently small in 3-D. This in particular improves the most recent well-posedness result in [10], which requires the initial velocity $u_0\in H^2(\R^d)$ for the local well-posedness result, and a smallness condition on the fl…
The initial value problem of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with non-zero forces in $L^{n,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is investigated. Even though the Stokes semigroup is not strongly continuous on $L^{n,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, with the qualitative condition for the external forces, it is clarified that the mild solution of the Naiver-Stokes equations satisfies the differential equations in the topology of $L^{n,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Inspired by the conditions for the forces, we characterize the maximal complete subspace in $L^{n,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ where the Stokes semigroup is st…
It is proved that there exists a local-in-time solution $u\in C([0,T),bmo(\mathbb{R}^d)^d)$ of the Navier-Stokes equations such that every $u(t)$ has an analytic extension on a complex domain whose size only depends on $t$ (and increases with $t$) and the external force $f$, assuming only that the initial velocity $u_0$ is a local $BMO$ function. Our method for proving is a combination and refinement of the work by Grujić and Kukavica [13], Guberović [15] and Kozono et al. [18]. One challenging step is the estimation of the heat and Stokes semigroups from $BMO$-type spaces to $L^\infty$; a res…
In this paper, we study the initial value problem of the Navier-Stokes equations in the half-space. Let a solenoidal initial velocity be given in the function space $ \dot{B}_{pq,0}^{α-\frac{2}{2}}({\mathbb R}^n_+)$ for $α+1 = \frac{n}p + \frac2q$ and $0<α<2$. We prove the global in time existence of weak solution $u\in L^q(0,\infty; \dot B^α_{pq}({\mathbb R}^n_+))\cap L^{q_0}(0, \infty; L^{p_0}({\mathbb R}^n_+)) $ for some $ 1<p_0, q_0<\infty$ with $\frac{n}{p_0} +\frac2{q_0} =1$, when the given initial velocity has small norm in function space $ \dot{B}_{p_0q_0,0}^{-\frac{2}{q_0}}({\mathbb R…
We define the Ladyzhenskaya-Lions exponent $α_{\rm {\tiny \sc l}} (n)=({2+n})/4$ for Navier-Stokes equations with dissipation $-(-Δ)^α$ in ${\Bbb R}^n$, for all $n\geq 2$. We review the proof of strong global solvability when $α\geq α_{\rm {\tiny \sc l}} (n)$, given smooth initial data. If the corresponding Euler equations for $n>2$ were to allow uncontrolled growth of the enstrophy ${1\over 2} \|\nabla u \|^2_{L^2}$, then no globally controlled coercive quantity is currently known to exist that can regularize solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for $α<α_{\rm {\tiny \sc l}} (n)$. The ener…
We establish the existence of a solution to the Navier-Stokes equations on a moving domain with surface tension in an optimal Sobolev space for the case of two space dimension. No compatibility conditions are required to guarantee the existence of a solution.
We prove that the multidimensional dimensional initial value problem for the Navier-Stokes equations is globally well-posed in the so-called Moment and Grand Lebesgue Spaces (GLS), and give some a priory estimations for solution in this spaces.
For the two-phase incompressible Navier--Stokes equations with surface tension, we derive an appropriate weak formulation incorporating a variational formulation using divergence-free test functions. We prove a consistency result to justify our definition and, under reasonable regularity assumptions, we reconstruct the pressure function from the weak formulation.
The two-phase free boundary problem for the Navier-Stokes system is considered in a situation where the initial interface is close to a halfplane. By means of $L_p$-maximal regularity of the underlying linear problem we show local well-posedness of the problem, and prove that the solution, in particular the interface, becomes instantaneously real analytic.
In this paper, we study the inviscid limit of the free surface incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with or without surface tension. By delicate estimates, we prove the weak boundary layer of the velocity of the free surface Navier-Stokes equations and the existence of strong or weak vorticity layer for different conditions. When the limit of the difference between the initial Navier-Stokes vorticity and the initial Euler vorticity is nonzero, or the tangential projection on the free surface of the Euler strain tensor multiplying by normal vector is nonzero, there exists a strong vorticity l…
This paper shows the unique solvability of elliptic problems associated with two-phase incompressible flows, which are governed by the two-phase Navier-Stokes equations, in unbounded domains such as the whole space separated by a compact interface and the whole space separated by a non-compact interface. As a by-product of the unique solvability of elliptic problems, we obtain the Helmholtz-Weyl decomposition for two-phase incompressible flows.
In this work, we investigate the asymmetric Bingham fluid equations. The asymmetric fluid of Bingham includes symmetric and antisymmetric stresses with such stresses appearing as an elastic response to the micro-rotational deformations of grains in a complex fluid. We show the global-in-time solvability of a weak solution for three dimensional boundary value problem with Navier boundary conditions of the asymmetric Bingham fluid equations.
In this paper, we investigate the uniform regularity of solutions to the 3-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system with free surfaces and study the corresponding asymptotic limits of such solutions to that of the compressible Euler system for vanishing viscosity and surface tension. It is shown that there exists an unique strong solution to the free boundary problem for the compressible Navier-Stokes system in a finite time interval which is independent of the viscosity and the surface tension. The solution is uniform bounded both in $W^{1,\infty}$ and a conormal Sobolev space…
We consider existence of global solutions to equations for three-dimensional rotating fluids in a periodic frame provided by a sufficiently large Coriolis force. The Coriolis force appears in almost all of the models of meteorology and geophysics dealing with large-scale phenomena. In the spatially decaying case, Koh, Lee and Takada (2014) showed existence for the large times of solutions of the rotating Euler equations provided by the large Coriolis force. In this case the resonant equation does not appear anymore. In the periodic case, however, the resonant equation appears, and thus the mai…
The aim of this paper is to show time-decay estimates of solutions to linearized two-phase Navier-Stokes equations with surface tension and gravity. The original two-phase Navier-Stokes equations describe the two-phase incompressible viscous flow with a sharp interface that is close to the hyperplane $x_N=0$ in the $N$-dimensional Euclidean space, $N \geq 2$. It is well-known that the Rayleigh-Taylor instability occurs when the upper fluid is heavier than the lower one, while this paper assumes that the lower fluid is heavier than the upper one and proves time-decay estimates of $L_p-L_q$ type…
Without any smallness assumption, we prove the global unique solvability of the 2-D incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with initial data in the critical Besov space, which is almost the energy space in the sense that they have the same scaling in terms of this 2-D system.
We study the zero-viscosity limit of free boundary Navier-Stokes equations with surface tension in $\mathbb{R}^3$ thus extending the work of Masmoudi and Rousset [1] to take surface tension into account. Due to the presence of boundary layers, we are unable to pass to the zero-viscosity limit in the usual Sobolev spaces. Indeed, as viscosity tends to zero, normal derivatives at the boundary should blow-up. To deal with this problem, we solve the free boundary problem in the so-called Sobolev co-normal spaces (after fixing the boundary via a coordinate transformation). We prove estimates which …
Here we investigate 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes Equations in the incompressible case with use of different approach and we prove the uniqueness of the weak solutions for the data from the space, which is dense in usual space of data. Moreover we study the solvability and uniqueness of the weak solutions of problems associated with investigation of the main problem.
We consider the motion of two superposed immiscible, viscous, incompressible, capillary fluids that are separated by a sharp interface which needs to be determined as part of the problem. Allowing for gravity to act on the fluids, we prove local well-posedness of the problem. In particular, we obtain well-posedness for the case where the heavy fluid lies on top of the light one, that is, for the case where the Rayleigh-Taylor instability is present. Additionally we show that solutions become real analytic instantaneously.
We consider a boundary-value problem describing the steady motion of a two-component mixture of viscous compressible heat-conducting fluids in a bounded domain. We make no simplifying assumptions except for postulating the coincidence of phase temperatures (which is physically justified in certain situations), that is, we retain all summands in equations that are a natural generalization of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier model of the motion of a one-component medium. We prove the existence of weak generalized solutions of the problem.
This article is concerned with the dynamic behaviour of two immiscible and incompressible fluids in a cylindrical domain, which are separated by a sharp interface. In case that the heavy fluid is situated on top of the light fluid, one expects that the fluid on top sags down into the lower phase. This effect is known as the Rayleigh-Taylor-Instability. We present a rather complete analysis of the corresponding free boundary problem which involves a contact angle. Our main result implies the existence of a critical surface tension with the following property. In case that the surface tension of…
By observing a new relation between the magnetic pressure and the hydrodynamic pressure, global existence of classical solution to the full perfect MHD equations with large data is established, in particular including the case when all the viscosity, heat conductivity and diffusivity coefficients are constant. This can be viewed as an analog of the classical work by Kazhikhov-Shelukhin for the Navier-Stokes equations to the MHD equations. In addition, the vanishing shear viscosity limit is proved.
In this paper, we study the initial-boundary value problem of the Navier-Stokes system in the half space. We prove the unique solvability of the weak solution on some short time interval (0, T) with the velocity in $C^{α, \frac12 α} ({\mathbb R}^n_+ \times (0, T)), 0 < α< 1$, when the given initial data is in $C^α({\mathbb R}^n_+)$ and the given boundary data is in $C^{α, \frac12 α} ({\mathbb R}^{n-1} \times (0, T))$. Our result generalizes the result in [30] considering nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary data.
This work establishes the equivalence between Mean Field Game and a class of PDE systems closely related to compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The solvability of the PDE system via the existence of the Nash Equilibrium of the Mean Field Game is provided under a set of conditions.
In this paper, we investigate the global solvability of the chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system on a three-dimensional moving domain of finite depth, bounded below by a rigid flat bottom and bounded above by the free surface. Completing the system with boundary conditions that match the boundary descriptions in the experiments and numerical simulations, we establish the global existence and uniqueness of solutions near a constant state $(0,\hat{c},\mathbf{0})$, where $\hat{c}$ is the saturation value of the oxygen on the free surface. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first analytical work…
We prove existence and uniqueness of strong (pointwise) solutions to a linear nonlocal strongly coupled hyperbolic system of equations posed on all of Euclidean space. The system of equations comes from a linearization of a nonlocal model of elasticity in solid mechanics. It is a nonlocal analogue of the Navier-Lamé system of classical elasticity. We use a well-known semigroup technique that hinges on the strong solvability of the corresponding steady-state elliptic system. The leading operator is an integro-differential operator characterized by a distinctive matrix kernel which is used to co…
In this article the question on uniqueness of weak solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations in the 3-dimensional case is studied. Here the investigation is carried out with use of another approach. The uniqueness of velocity for the considered problem is proved for given functions from spaces that posseses some smoothness. Moreover, these spaces are dense in respective spaces of functions, under which were proved existence of the weak solutions. In addition here the solvability and uniqueness of the weak solutions of auxiliary problems associated with the main problem is investig…
We prove the local solvability of the p-adic analog of the Navier-Stokes equation. This equation describes, within the p-adic model of porous medium, the flow of a fluid in capillaries.
The heat conducting compressible viscous flows are governed by the Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) system. In this paper, we study the NSF system accomplished by the Newton law of cooling for the heat transfer at the boundary. On one part of the boundary, we consider the Navier slip boundary condition, while in the remaining part the inlet and outlet occur. The existence of a weak solution is proved via a new fixed point argument. With this new approach, the weak solvability is possible in Lipschitz domains, by making recourse to \(L^q\)-Neumann problems with \(q>n\).Thus, standard existence resul…
In this article we study the uniqueness of the weak solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes Equation in the 3-dimensional case with use of different approach. Here the uniqueness of the obtained by Leray of the weak solution is proved in the case, when datums from spaces that are densely contained into spaces of datums for which was proved the existence of the weak solution. Moreover we investigate the solvability and uniqueness of the weak solutions of problems associated with investigation of the main problem
In this paper we consider a slab of viscous incompressible fluid bounded above by a free boundary, bounded below by a flat rigid interface, and acted on by gravity. The unique equilibrium is a flat slab of quiescent fluid. It is well-known that equilibria are asymptotically stable but that the rate of decay to equilibrium depends heavily on whether or not surface tension forces are accounted for at the free interface. The aim of the paper is to better understand the decay rate by studying a generalization of the linearized dynamics in which the surface tension operator is replaced by a more ge…
This paper discusses the solvability (global in time) of the initial-boundary value problem of the Navier-stokes equations in the half space when the initial data $ h\in \dot{ B}_{q σ}^{α-\frac{2}{q}}(\R_+)$ and the boundary data $ g\in \dot{ B}_q^{α-\frac{1}{q},\frac{\al}{2}-\frac{1}{2q}}({\mathbb R}^{n-1}\times {\mathbb R}_+) $ with $g_n\in \dot B^{\frac12 α}_q ({\mathbb R}_+; \dot B^{-\frac1q}_q ({\mathbb R}^{n-1}))\cap L^q({\mathbb R}_+;\dot{B}^{α-\frac{1}{q}}(\Rn))$, for any $0<α<2$ and $q =\frac{n+2}{α+1}$. Compatibility condition is required for $h$ and $g$.
In this paper we prove the existence and uniqueness of path-wise strong solution to stochastic viscous flow in unbounded channels with multiple outlets using local monotonicity arguments. We devise a construction for solvability using a stochastic basic vector field.
We consider the motion of a rigid body, governed by the Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain. Navier's condition is prescribed on the boundary of the body. We give the global in a time solvability result of weak solution. The result permits a possibility of collisions of the body with the boundary of the domain.
Consider a free boundary problem of compressible-incompressible two-phase flows with surface tension and phase transition in bounded domains $Ω_{t +}, Ω_{t -} \subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N \ge 2$, where the domains are separated by a sharp compact interface $Γ_t \subset \mathbb{R}^{N - 1}$. We prove a global in time unique existence theorem for such free boundary problem under the assumption that the initial data are sufficiently small and the initial domain of the incompressible fluid is close to a ball. In particular, we obtain the solution in the maximal $L_p - L_q$-regularity class with $2 < p…
In this work, we study the Dirichlet problem associated with a strongly coupled system of nonlocal equations. The system of equations comes from a linearization of a model of peridynamics, a nonlocal model of elasticity. It is a nonlocal analogue of the Navier-Lamé system of classical elasticity. The leading operator is an integro-differential operator characterized by a distinctive matrix kernel which is used to couple differences of components of a vector field. The paper's main contributions are proving well-posedness of the system of equations and demonstrating optimal local Sobolev regula…
We analyze optimal control problems for two-phase Navier-Stokes equations with surface tension. Based on $L_p$-maximal regularity of the underlying linear problem and recent well-posedness results of the problem for sufficiently small data we show the differentiability of the solution with respect to initial and distributed controls for appropriate spaces resulting form the $L_p$-maximal regularity setting. We consider first a formulation where the interface is transformed to a hyperplane. Then we deduce differentiability results for the solution in the physical coordinates. Finally, we state …
We establish the local existence and uniqueness of solutions to the free-boundary ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with surface tension in three spatial dimensions by a suitable modification of the Nash--Moser iteration scheme. The main ingredients in proving the convergence of the scheme are the tame estimates and unique solvability of the linearized problem in the anisotropic Sobolev spaces $H_*^m$ for $m$ large enough. In order to derive the tame estimates, we make full use of the boundary regularity enhanced from the surface tension. The unique solution of the linearized pr…
For a natural number $m \ge 2$, we study $m$ layers of finite depth, horizontally infinite, viscous, and incompressible fluid bounded below by a flat rigid bottom. Adjacent layers meet at free interface regions, and the top layer is bounded above by a free boundary as well. A uniform gravitational field, normal to the rigid bottom, acts on the fluid. We assume that the fluid mass densities are strictly decreasing from bottom to top and consider the cases with and without surface tension acting on the free surfaces. In addition to these gravity-capillary effects, we allow a force to act on the …
The two-phase free boundary value problem for the isothermal Navier-Stokes system is studied for general bounded geometries in absence of phase transitions, external forces and boundary contacts. It is shown that the problem is well-posed in an Lp-setting, and that it generates a local semiflow on the induced phase manifold. If the phases are connected, the set of equilibria of the system forms a (n+1)-dimensional manifold, each equilibrium is stable, and it is shown that global solutions which do not develop singularities converge to an equilibrium as time goes to infinity. The latter is prov…
