Let $c\geq 0$, $d\geq 2$ be integers and $\mathcal{N}_c^{(d)}$ be the variety of groups in which every $d$-generator subgroup is nilpotent of class at most $c$. N.D. Gupta posed this question that for what values of $c$ and $d$ it is true that $\mathcal{N}_c^{(d)}$ is locally nilpotent? We prove that if $c\leq 2^d+2^{d-1}-3$ then the variety $\mathcal{N}_c^{(d)}$ is locally nilpotent and we reduce the question of Gupta about the periodic groups in $\mathcal{N}_c^{(d)}$ to the prime power finite exponent groups in this variety.
We investigate the concept of dominion (in the sense of Isbell) in several varieties of nilpotent groups. We obtain a full description of dominions in the variety of nilpotent groups of class at most two. Then we look at the behavior of dominions of subgroups of groups in ${\cal N}_2$ when taken in the context of ${\cal N}_c$ with $c>2$. Finally we establish the existence of nontrivial dominions in the category of all nilpotent groups.
Let $H$ be a linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We prove that any "exponential map" for $H$ induces a bijection between the variety of $r$-tuples of commuting $[p]$-nilpotent elements in $Lie(H)$ and the variety of height $r$ infinitesimal one-parameter subgroups of $H$. In particular, we show that for a connected reductive group $G$ in pretty good characteristic, there is a canonical exponential map for $G$ and hence a canonical bijection between the aforementioned varieties, answering in this case questions raised both implicitly and explicitly…
We survey aspects of locally nilpotent linear groups. Then we obtain a new classification; namely, we classify the irreducible maximal locally nilpotent subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(q, \mathbb F)$ for prime $q$ and any field $\mathbb F$.
We present a survey of our recent research on varieties, generated by wreath products of groups. In particular, the full classification of all cases, when the (cartesian or direct) wreath product of any abelian groups $A$ and $B$ generates the product variety $\var{A} \var{B}$, is given. The analog of this is given for sets of abelian groups. We also present new, unpublished research on cases when the similar question is considered for non-abelian, finite groups.
The authors have shown previously that every locally pro-p contraction group decomposes into the direct product of a p-adic analytic factor and a torsion factor. It has long been known that p-adic analytic contraction groups are nilpotent. We show here that the torsion factor is nilpotent too, and hence that every locally pro-p contraction group is nilpotent.
For any odd prime $p$, we give an example of a locally finite $p$-group $G$ containing a left 3-Engel element $x$ where $\langle x \rangle^G$ is not nilpotent.
Following J.S. Rose, a subgroup H of a group G is said contranormal in G if G = H^G . In a certain sense, contranormal subgroups are antipodes to subnormal subgroups. It is well known that a finite group is nilpotent if and only if it has no proper contranormal subgroups. We prove that a nilpotent-by-finite group with no proper contranormal subgroup is nilpotent. There are locally nilpotent groups with a proper contranormal subgroup. We study the structure of hypercentral groups with a finite proper contranormal subgroup.
We investigate some situation in which automorphisms of a group G are uniquely determined by their restrictions to a proper subgroup H. Much of the paper is devoted to studying under which additional hypotheses this property forces G to be nilpotent if H is. As an application we prove that certain countably infinite locally nilpotent groups have uncountably many (outer) automorphisms.
In this paper, we show that a locally graded group with a finite number m of non-(nilpotent of class at most n) subgroups is (soluble of class at most [log2(n)] + m + 3)-by-(finite of order $\le$ m!). Also we show that the derived length of a soluble group with a finite number m of non-(nilpotent of class at most n) subgroups, is at most [log2(n)] + m + 1.
We give a detailed description of infinite locally nilpotent groups G such that the index |C_G (x) : <x>| is finite, for every non-normal cyclic subgroup <x> of G. We are also able to extend our analysis to all non-periodic groups satisfying a variation of our condition, where the requirement of finiteness is replaced with a bound.
We classify certain cases when the wreath products of distinct pairs of groups generate the same variety. This allows us to investigate the subvarieties of some nilpotent-by-abelian product varieties ${\mathfrak U}{\mathfrak V}$ with the help of wreath products of groups. In particular, using wreath products we find such subvarieties in nilpotent-by-abelian ${\mathfrak U}{\mathfrak V}$, which have the same nilpotency class, the same length of solubility, and the same exponent, but which still are distinct subvarieties. Obtained classification strengthens our recent work on varieties generated …
In this paper we consider the problem of classification of the nilpotent class 2 finitely generated torsion free groups up to the geometric equivalence. By a very easy technique it is proved that this problem is equivalent to the problem of classification of the complete (in the Maltsev sense) nilpotent torsion free finite rank groups up to the isomorphism. This result, allows us to once more comprehend the complication of the problem of the classification of the quasi-varieties of nilpotent class 2 groups. It is well known that the variety of a nilpotent class s (for every s) groups is Noethe…
We present a complete list of groups $G$ and fields $F$ for which: (i) the group of normalized units V(FG) of the group algebra FG is locally nilpotent; (ii) the group algebra FG has a finite number of nilpotent elements and V(FG) is an Engel group.
In this paper we derive an explicit expression for the normal zeta function of class two nilpotent groups whose associated Pfaffian hypersurface is smooth. In particular, we show how the local zeta function depends on counting mod p rational points on related varieties, and we describe the varieties that can appear in such a decomposition. As a corollary, we also establish explicit results on the degree of polynomial subgroup growth in these groups, and we study the behaviour of poles of this zeta function. Under certain geometric conditions, we also confirm that these functions satisfy a func…
In this paper we mainly consider the class LN of all locally nilpotent groups. We first show that there is no universal group in LN_lambda if lambda is a cardinal such that lambda = lambda^{aleph_0}; here we call a group G universal (in LN_lambda) if any group H in LN_lambda can be embedded into G where LN_lambda denotes the class of all locally nilpotent groups of cardinality at most lambda. However, our main interest is the construction of torsion-free epi-universal groups in LN_lambda, where G in LN_lambda is said to be epi-universal if any group H in LN_lambda is an epimorphic image of G. …
Kamke \cite{Kamke1921} solved an analog of Waring's problem with $n$th powers replaced by integer-valued polynomials. Larsen and Nguyen \cite{LN2019} explored the view of algebraic groups as a natural setting for Waring's problem. This paper applies the theory of polynomial maps and polynomial sequences in locally nilpotent groups developed in previous work \cite{Hu2020} to solve an analog of Waring's problem for the general discrete Heisenberg groups $H_{2n+1}(\mathbb{Z})$ for any integer $n\ge1$.
Schubert varieties have been exhaustively studied with a plethora of techniques: Coxeter groups, explicit desingularization, Frobenius splitting, etc. Many authors have applied these techniques to various other varieties, usually defined by determinantal equations. It has turned out that most of these apparently different varieties are actually Schubert varieties in disguise, so that one may use a single unified theory to understand many large families of spaces. The most powerful result in this direction was given by Lusztig as a footnote to his work on canonical bases. He showed that the var…
We show that the tangent cone at the identity is not a complete quasiconformal invariant for sub-Riemannian nilpotent groups. Namely, we show that there exists a nilpotent Lie group equipped with left invariant sub-Riemannian metric that is not locally quasiconformally equivalent to its tangent cone at the identity. In particular, such spaces are not locally bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic. The result is based on the study of Carnot groups that are rigid in the sense that their only quasiconformal maps are the translations and the dilations.
