In this note we investigate the problem of determining elements of the Selberg class from their Dirichlet series coefficients at the primes. We show that this is possible when the degree is one, but in general need an additional weak hypothesis on the Dirichlet series coefficients at squares of primes.
We study the problem of determining elements of the Selberg class by information on the coefficents of the Dirichlet series at the squares of primes, or information about the zeroes of the functions.
In his Classical approximation to the Twin prime problem, Selberg proved that for $x$ sufficiently large, there is an $n \in (x,2x)$ such that $2^{Ω(n)}+2^{Ω(n+2)} \leq λ$ with $λ=14$, where $Ω(n)$ is the number of prime factors of $n$ counted with multiplicity. This enabled him to show that for infinitely many $n$, $n(n+2)$ has atmost $5$ prime factors, with one having atmost $2$ and the other having atmost $3$ prime factors. By adopting Selberg's approach and using a refinement suggested by Selberg, we improve this value of $λ$ to about $λ=12.59$.
Let $π=\otimesπ_{v}$ and $π^{\prime}=\otimesπ_{v}^{\prime}$ be two irreducible, automorphic, cuspidal representations of $GL_{m}(\mathbb{A}_{K}) >.$ Using the logarithmic zero-free region of Rankin-Selberg $L$-function, Moreno established the analytic strong multiplicity one theorem if at least one of them is self-contragredient, i.e. $π$ and $π^{\prime}$ will be equal if they have finitely many same local components $π_{v},π_{v}^{\prime},$ for which the norm of places are bounded polynomially by the analytic conductor of these cuspidal representations. Without the assumption of the self-contr…
A fundamental question, first raised by Langlands, is to know whether the Rankin-Selberg product of two (not necessarily holomorphic) cusp forms f and g is modular, i.e., if there exists an automorphic form f box g on GL(4)/Q whose standard L-function equals L^*(s, f x g) after removing the ramified and archimedean factors. The first main result of this paper is to answer it in the affirmative, in fact with the base field Q replaced by any number field F. Our proof uses a mixture of converse theorems, base change and descent, and it also appeals to the local regularity properties of Eisenstein…
Given a pair of distinct unitary cuspidal automorphic representations for GL(n) over a number field, let S denote the set of finite places at which the automorphic representations are unramified and their associated Hecke eigenvalues differ. In this note, we demonstrate how conjectures on the automorphy and possible cuspidality of adjoint lifts and Rankin-Selberg products imply lower bounds on the size of S. We also obtain further results for GL(3).
In 1874, Mertens proved the approximate formula for partial Euler product for Riemann zeta function at $s=1$, which is called Mertens' theorem. In this paper, we generalize Mertens' theorem for Selberg class and show the prime number theorem for Selberg class.
We establish zero-free regions tapering as an inverse power of the analytic conductor for Rankin-Selberg L-functions on GL(n) x GL(n'). Such zero-free regions are equivalent to commensurate lower bounds on the edge of the critical strip, and in the case of $L(s,f x f~), on the residue at s=1. As an application we show that a cuspidal automorphic representation on GL(n) is determined by a finite number of its Dirichlet series coefficients, and that this number grows at most polynomially in the analytic conductor.
Let $F(s)$ be a function belonging to Selberg class. Chandrasekharan and Narasiman proved the approximate functional equation for $F(s)$. In this paper, we shall generalize this formula for the derivatives of $F(s)$.
We extend Venkatesh's proof of the converse theorem for classical holomorphic modular forms to arbitrary level and character. The method of proof, via the Petersson trace formula, allows us to treat arbitrary degree 2 gamma factors of Selberg class type.
Recently, Garunkštis, Laurinčikas, Matsumoto, J. & R. Steuding showed an effective universality-type theorem for the Riemann zeta-function by using an effective multi-dimensional denseness result of Voronin. We will generalize Voronin's effective result and their theorem to the elements of the Selberg class satisfying some conditions.
We formulate a generalization of Riesz-type criteria in the setting of $L$-functions belonging to the Selberg class. We obtain a criterion which is sufficient for the Grand Riemann Hypothesis (GRH) for $L$-functions satisfying axioms of the Selberg class without imposing the Ramanujan hypothesis on their coefficients. We also construct a subclass of the Selberg class and prove a necessary criterion for GRH for $L$-functions in this subclass. Identities of Ramanujan-Hardy-Littlewood type are also established in this setting, specific cases of which yield new transformation formulas involving sp…
In this paper, new asymptotic formulas for sums over zeros of functions from the Selberg class are obtained. These results continue the investigations of Murty $\&$ Perelli \cite{12}, of Murty $\&$ Zaharescu \cite{13}, of Kamiya $\&$ Suzuki \cite{8}, of Steuding \cite{19} and other authors.
This is an expanded version of the author's lecture at the XX Congresso U.M.I., held in Siena in September 2015. After a brief review of L-functions, we turn to the classical converse theorems of H.Hamburger, E.Hecke and A.Weil, and to some later developments. Finally we present several results on converse theorems in the framework of the Selberg class of L-functions.
In this paper we prove explicit upper and lower bounds for the error term in the Riemann-von Mangoldt type formula for the number of zeros inside the critical strip. Furthermore, we also give examples of the bounds.
We prove explicit formulae for $α$-points of $L$-functions from the Selberg class. Next we extend a theorem of Littlewood on the vertical distribution of zeros of the Riemann zeta-function $ζ(s)$ to the case of $α$-points of the aforementioned $L$-functions. This result implies the uniform distribution of subsequences of $α$-points and from this a discrete universality theorem in the spirit of Voronin is derived.
By the unfolding method, Rankin-Selberg L-functions for ${\rm GL}(n)\times{\rm GL}(m)$ can be expressed in terms of period integrals. These period integrals actually define invariant forms on tensor products of the relevant automorphic representations. By the multiplicity-one theorems due to Sun-Zhu and Chen-Sun such invariant forms are unique up to scalar multiples and can therefore be related to invariant forms on equivalent principal series representations. We construct meromorphic families of such invariant forms for spherical principal series representations of ${\rm GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ an…
We prove a general result relating the shape of the Euler product of an $L$-function to the analytic properties of certain linear twists of the $L$-function itself. Then, by a sharp form of the transformation formula for linear twists, we check the required analytic properties in the case of $L$-functions of degree 2 and conductor 1 in the Selberg class. Finally we prove a converse theorem, showing that $ζ(s)^2$ is the only member of the Selberg class satisfying the above conditions and, moreover, having a pole at $s=1$.
We show that a class of Dirichlet series ${\mathfrak{A}}^{\#}$ that is much larger than the extended Selberg class ${\mathscr{S}}^{\#}$, and also contains the standard as well as the tensor product, exterior square and symmetric square $L$-functions of automorphic $L$-functions of $GL_n$ over number fields, does not have any elements of degrees between $1$ and $2$. The proof of our more general theorem is very different from the proof of Kaczorowski and Perelli for the class ${\mathscr{S}}^{\#}$, and is much shorter and simpler even in that case.
In the paper we introduce the new approach how to use an orthonormality relation of coefficients of Dirichlet series defining given L-functions from the Selberg class to prove joint universality.
Let $F$ be a function in the Selberg class ${\mathcal S}$ and $a$ be a real number not equal to 1/2. Consider the sum $$λ_{F}(n,a)=\sum_ρ\left[1-\left(\frac{ρ-a}{ρ+a-1}\right)^{n}\right],$$ where $ρ$ runs over the non-trivial zeros of $F$. In this paper, we prove that the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to the positivity of the "modified Li coefficient" $λ_{F}(n,a)$, for $n=1,2,..$ and $a<1/2$. Furthermore, we give an explicit arithmetic and asymptotic formula of these coefficients.
In 1956, Tong established an asymptotic formula for the mean square of the error term in the summatory function of the Piltz divisor function $d_3(n).$ The aim of this paper is to generalize Tong's method to a class of Dirichlet series that satisfy a functional equation. As an application, we can establish the asymptotic formulas for the mean square of the error terms for a class of functions in the well-known Selberg class. The Tong-type identity and formula established in this paper can be viewed as an analogue of the well-known Voronoï's formula.
In the present paper we prove lower bounds for L-functions from the Selberg class, by this means improving earlier results obtained by the second author together with Jörn Steuding. We formulate two theorems which use slightly different technical assumptions, and give two totally different proofs. The first proof uses the "resonance method", which was introduced by Soundararajan, while the second proof uses methods from Diophantine approximation which resemble those used by Montgomery. Interestingly, both methods lead to roughly the same lower bounds, which fall short of those known for the Ri…
Given a degree 1 function $F\in\mathcal{S}^{\sharp}$ and a real number $α$, we consider the linear twist $F(s,α)$, proving that it satisfies a functional equation reflecting $s$ into $1-s$, which can be seen as a Hurwitz-Lerch type of functional equation. We also derive some results on the distribution of the zeros of the linear twist.
The author reviews results and conjectures of Selberg on a class of Dirichlet series functions which share properties with the Riemann zeta function, and he relates this work to the theory of Artin L-functions.
Levinson and Montgomery proved that the Riemann zeta-function $ζ(s)$ and its derivative have approximately the same number of non-real zeros left of the critical line. R. Spira showed that $ζ'(1/2+it)=0$ implies $ζ(1/2+it)=0$. Here we obtain that in small areas located to the left of the critical line and near it the functions $ζ(s)$ and $ζ'(s)$ have the same number of zeros. We prove our result for more general zeta-functions from the extended Selberg class $S$. We also consider zero trajectories of a certain family of zeta-functions from $S$.
An overview of the classical Rankin-Selberg problem involving the asymptotic formula for sums of coefficients of holomorphic cusp forms is given. We also study the function $Δ(x;ξ) (0\leξ\le1)$, the error term in the Rankin-Selberg problem weighted by $ξ$-th power of the logarithm. Mean square estimates for $Δ(x;ξ)$ are proved.
We prove a converse theorem for a family of L functions of degree 2 with gamma factor coming from a holomorphic cuspform. We show these L functions coincide with either those coming from a newform or a product of L functions arising from Dirichlet characters. We require some analytic data on the Euler factors, but don't require anything on the shape. We also suppose that the twisted L functions satisfy expected functional equations. We allow the non-trivial twists to have arbitrary poles.
At scattered places of his notebooks, Ramanujan recorded over 30 values of singular moduli $α_n$. All those results were proved by Berndt et. al by employing Weber-Ramanujan's class invariants. In this paper, we initiate to derive the explicit evaluations formula for $α_{9n}$ and $α_{n/9}$ by involving class invariant. For this purpose, we establish several new $P-Q$ mixed modular equations involving theta-functions. Further application of these modular equations, we derive a new formula to explicit evaluation of Ramanujan- Selberg continued fraction.
We establish the equivalence of conjectures concerning the pair correlation of zeros of $L$-functions in the Selberg class and the variances of sums of a related class of arithmetic functions over primes in short intervals. This extends the results of Goldston & Montgomery [7] and Montgomery & Soundararajan [11] for the Riemann zeta-function to other $L$-functions in the Selberg class. Our approach is based on the statistics of the zeros because the analogue of the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture for the auto-correlation of the arithmetic functions we consider is not available in general. One of o…
Using holomorphic projection, we work out a parametrization for all relations of products (resp. Rankin-Cohen brackets) of weight $\tfrac 32$ mock modular forms with holomorphic shadow and weight $\tfrac 12$ modular forms in the spirit of the Kronecker-Hurwitz class number relations. In particular we obtain new proofs for several class number relations among which some are classical, others are relatively new. We also obtain similar results for the mock theta functions.
In this paper we prove that the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH) for functions in the class $\mathcal{S}^{\sharp\flat}$ containing the Selberg class is equivalent to a certain integral expression of the real part of the generalized Li coefficient $λ_F(n)$ associated to $F\in\mathcal{S}^{\sharp\flat}$, for positive integers $n$. Moreover, we deduce that the GRH is equivalent to a certain expression of $Re(λ_F(n))$ in terms of the sum of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. Then, we partially evaluate the integral expression and deduce further relations equivalent to the GRH involvin…
We give a construction of a wide class of modular symbols attached to reductive groups. As an application we construct a p-adic distribution interpolating the special values of the twisted Rankin-Selberg L-function attached to cuspidal automorphic representations of GL(n) and GL(n-1) over number fields. If the representations are ordinary at p, our distribution is bounded and yields analyticity of the associated p-adic L-function.
In the present paper, we show that, for every $δ>0$, the function $(\log {\mathcal{L}}(s))^{(m)}$, where $m\in {\mathbb{N}} \cup \{ 0\}$ and ${\mathcal{L}} (s) := \sum_{n=1}^\infty a(n) n^{-s}$ is an element of the Selberg class ${\mathcal{S}}$, takes any value infinitely often in any strip $1<\Re(s) <1+δ$, provided $\sum_{p\leq x} |a (p)|^2 \sim κπ(x)$ for some $κ>0$. In particular, ${\mathcal{L}} (s)$ takes any non-zero value infinitely often in the strip $1<\Re(s)<1+δ$, and the first derivative of ${\mathcal{L}} (s)$ vanishes infinitely often.
If $$ Δ(x) := \sum_{n\le x}c_n - Cx $$ denotes the error term in the classical Rankin-Selberg problem, then it is proved that $$ \int_0^X Δ^4(x)\d x \ll_εX^{3+ε},\quad \int_0^X Δ_1^4(x)\d x \ll_εX^{11/2+ε}, $$ where $Δ_1(x) = \int_0^xΔ(u) du$. The latter bound is, up to `$ε$', best possible.
If $$ Δ(x) \;:=\; \sum_{n\leqslant x}c_n - Cx\qquad(C>0) $$ denotes the error term in the classical Rankin-Selberg problem, then we obtain a non-trivial upper bound for the mean square of $Δ(x+U) - Δ(x)$ for a certain range of $U = U(X)$. In particular, under the Lindelöf hypothesis for $ζ(s)$, it is shown that $$ \int_X^{2X} \Bigl(Δ(x+U)-Δ(x)\Bigr)^2\,{\roman d} x \;\ll_ε\; X^{9/7+ε}U^{8/7}, $$ while under the Lindelöf hypothesis for the Rankin-Selberg zeta-function the integral is bounded by $X^{1+ε}U^{4/3}$. An analogous result for the discrete second moment of $Δ(x+U)-Δ(x)$ also holds.
We will introduce two new classes of Dirichlet series which are monoids under multiplication. The first class $\mathfrak{A}^{\#}$ contains both the extended Selberg class $\mathscr{S}^{\#}$ of Kaczorowski and Perelli as well as many $L$-functions attached to automorphic representations of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb A}_K)$, where ${\mathbb A}_K$ denotes the adèles over the number field $K$ (these representations need not be unitary or generic). This is in contrast to the class $\mathscr{S}^{\#}$ which is smaller and is known to contain, very few of these $L$-functions. The larger class is obtained by…
Following the prequel work \cite{VO3}, we prove a generalization of "Mazur's conjecture" for $L$-functions of elliptic curves in abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields, including the assertion that the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve in the ${\bf{Z}}_p^2$-extension is finitely generated modulo Heegner points. The novelty of the approach here is to use the existence of a suitable $p$-adic $L$-function to reduce the problem to a minimal nonvanishing criterion, which should be applicable to a broader class of problems than considered here.
In Sarnak's paper, it was proved that the Selberg zeta function for SL(2,Z) is expressed in terms of the fundamental units and the class numbers of the primitive indefinite binary quadratic forms. The aim of this paper is to obtain similar arithmetic expressions of the logarithmic derivatives of the Selberg zeta functions for congruence subgroups of SL(2,Z). As applications, we study the Brun-Titchmarsh type prime geodesic theorem, the asymptotic behavior of the sum of the class number.
The main objects of study in this article are two classes of Rankin-Selberg L-unctions, namely L(s, f \times g) and L(s, sym^2(g) \times sym^2(g)), where f, g are newforms, holomorphic or of Maass type, on the upper half plane, and sym^2(g) denotes the symmetric square lift of g to GL(3). We prove that in general, i.e., when these L-functions are not divisible by L-functions of quadratic characters (such divisibility happening rarely), they do not admit any Landau-Siegel zeros. These zeros, which are real and close to s=1, are highly mysterious and are not expected to occur. There are corollar…
