It is now well known that the K-theory of a Waldhausen category depends on more than just its (triangulated) homotopy category (see [Schlichting]). The purpose of this note is to show that the K-theory spectrum of a (good) Waldhausen category is completely determined by its Dwyer-Kan simplicial localization, without any additional structure. As the simplicial localization is a refined version of the homotopy category which also determines the triangulated structure, our result is a possible answer to the general question: ``To which extent $K$-theory is not an invariant of triangulated derived categories ?''
In this short note, for a morphism of Waldhausen categories $f\colon \mathbb{A} = (\mathcal{A} ,w_{\mathbb{A}}) \to \mathbb{B} = (\mathcal{B},w_{\mathbb{B}})$, we will define $\operatorname{Cone} f$ to be a Waldhausen category. There exists the canonical morphism of Waldhausen categories $κ_f\colon \mathbb{B}\to \operatorname{Cone} f$. We will show that the sequence $\mathbb{A}\overset{f}{\to}\mathbb{B}\overset{κ_f}{\to}\operatorname{Cone}f$ induces fibration sequence of spaces $K(\mathbb{A})\overset{K(f)}{\to}K(\mathbb{B})\overset{K(κ_f)}{\to} K(\operatorname{Cone} f)$ on connective $K$-theor…
Utilizing simplicial Waldhausen theory, we prove that the geometric realization of the topologized category of bounded chain complexes over complex numbers (resp. real numbers) is an infinite loop space that represents connective complex (resp. real) topological K-theory. The key ingredient in our proof is a generalized Waldhausen comparison theorem.
We give an explicit point-set construction of the Dennis trace map from the $K$-theory of endomorphisms $K\mathrm{End}(\mathcal{C})$ to topological Hochschild homology $\mathrm{THH}(\mathcal{C})$ for any spectral Waldhausen category $\mathcal{C}$. We describe the necessary technical foundations, most notably a well-behaved model for the spectral category of diagrams in $\mathcal{C}$ indexed by an ordinary category via the Moore end. This is applied to define a version of Waldhausen's $S_{\bullet}$-construction for spectral Waldhausen categories, which is central to this account of the Dennis t…
In previous work, we develop a generalized Waldhausen $S_{\bullet}$-construction whose input is an augmented stable double Segal space and whose output is a unital 2-Segal space. Here, we prove that this construction recovers the previously known $S_{\bullet}$-constructions for exact categories and for stable and exact $(\infty,1)$-categories, as well as the relative $S_{\bullet}$-construction for exact functors.
We prove a conjecture of Hesselholt and Ausoni-Rognes, establishing localization cofiber sequences of spectra for THH(ku) and TC(ku). These sequences support Hesselholt's view of the map l to ku as a "tamely ramified" extension of ring spectra, and validate the hypotheses necessary for Ausoni's simplified computation of V(1)_* K(KU). In order to make sense of the relative term THH(ku|KU) in the cofiber sequence and prove these results, we develop a theory of THH and TC of Waldhausen categories and prove the analogues of Waldhausen's theorems for K-theory. We resolve the longstanding confusion …
It is known by results of Dyckerhoff-Kapranov and of Gálvez--Carrillo-Kock-Tonks that the output of the Waldhausen S.-construction has a unital 2-Segal structure. Here, we prove that a certain S.-functor defines an equivalence between the category of augmented stable double categories and the category of unital 2-Segal sets. The inverse equivalence is described explicitly by a path construction. We illustrate the equivalence for the known examples of partial monoids, cobordism categories with genus constraints and graph coalgebras.
In this note we show that Waldhausen's K-theory functor from Waldhausen categories to spaces has a universal property: It is the target of the "universal global Euler characteristic", in other words, the "additivization" of the functor sending a Waldhausen category C to obj(C) . We also show that a large class of functors possesses such an additivization.
In a previous paper, we showed that a discrete version of the $S_\bullet$-construction gives an equivalence of categories between unital 2-Segal sets and augmented stable double categories. Here, we generalize this result to the homotopical setting, by showing that there is a Quillen equivalence between a model category for unital 2-Segal objects and a model category for augmented stable double Segal objects which is given by an $S_\bullet$-construction. We show that this equivalence fits together with the result in the discrete case and briefly discuss how it encompasses other known $S_\bulle…
We study the question of the existence of a Waldhausen category on any (relative) abelian category in which the contractible objects are the (relatively) projective objects. The associated $K$-theory groups are "stable algebraic $G$-theory," which in degree zero form a certain stable representation group. We prove both some existence and nonexistence results about such Waldhausen category structures, including the fact that, while it was known that the category of $R$-modules admits a model category structure if $R$ is quasi-Frobenius, that assumption is required even to get a Waldhausen categ…
We prove that Waldhausen K-theory, when extended to a very general class of quasicategories, can be described as a Goodwillie differential. In particular, K-theory spaces admit canonical (connective) deloopings, and the K-theory functor enjoys a universal property. Using this, we give new, higher categorical proofs of both the additivity and fibration theorems of Waldhausen. As applications of this technology, we study the algebraic K-theory of associative ring spectra and spectral Deligne-Mumford stacks.
We show that a complete hereditary cotorsion pair $(\C,\C^\bot)$ in an exact category $\E$, together with a subcategory $\Z\subseteq\E$ containing $\C^\bot$, determines a Waldhausen category structure on the exact category $\C$, in which $\Z$ is the class of acyclic objects. This allows us to prove a new version of Quillen's Localization Theorem, relating the $K$-theory of exact categories $\A\subseteq\B$ to that of a cofiber. The novel idea in our approach is that, instead of looking for an exact quotient category that serves as the cofiber, we produce a Waldhausen category, constructed throu…
For every $\infty$-category $\mathscr{C}$, there is a homotopy $n$-category $\mathrm{h}_n \mathscr{C}$ and a canonical functor $γ_n \colon \mathscr{C} \to \mathrm{h}_n \mathscr{C}$. We study these higher homotopy categories, especially in connection with the existence and preservation of (co)limits, by introducing a higher categorical notion of weak colimit. Using homotopy $n$-categories, we introduce the notion of an $n$-derivator and study the main examples arising from $\infty$-categories. Following the work of Maltsiniotis and Garkusha, we define $K$-theory for $\infty$-derivators and prov…
We introduce the notion of a bounded weight structure on a stable $\infty$-category and use this to prove the natural generalization of Waldhausen's sphere theorem: We show that the algebraic $K$-theory of a stable $\infty$-category with a bounded non-degenerate weight structure is equivalent to the algebraic $K$-theory of the heart of the weight structure.
Using the formalism of Grothendieck's derivators, we construct `the universal localizing invariant of dg categories'. By this, we mean a morphism U_l from the pointed derivator associated with the Morita homotopy theory of dg categories to a triangulated strong derivator M^loc such that U_l commutes with filtered homotopy colimits, preserves the point, sends each exact sequence of dg categories to a triangle and is universal for these properties. Similary, we construct the `the universal additive invariant of dg categories', i.e. the universal morphism of derivators U_a to a strong triangulate…
We compute the collection of CW-complexes in the model category of small categories constructed by Joyal and Tierney. More generally, if $X$ is a connected topological space, we show that the homotopy category of CW-complexes in Joyal-Tierney's model category of sheaves of sets on $X$ is equivalent to the homotopy category of groupoids. As an application of the ideas, we show that the algebraic $K$-theory groups of the category of pointed small categories are trivial, and more generally, the algebraic $K$-theory groups of any sufficiently "nice" Waldhausen category $\mathcal{A}$ of pointed sma…
Let $X$ be a simplicial set. We construct a novel adjunction between the categories of retractive spaces over $X$ and of $X_{+}$-comodules, then apply recent work on left-induced model category structures (arXiv:1401.3651v2 [math.AT],arXiv:1509.08154 [math.AT]) to establish the existence of a left proper, simplicial model category structure on the category of $X_+$-comodules, with respect to which the adjunction is a Quillen equivalence after localization with respect to some generalized homology theory. We show moreover that this model category structure stabilizes, giving rise to a model cat…
We construct a combinatorially defined involution on the algebraic $K$-theory of the ring spectrum associated to a bimonoidal category with anti-involution. Particular examples of such are braided bimonoidal categories. We investigate examples such as algebraic K-theory of connective complex and real topological K-theory and Waldhausen's K-theory of spaces of the form BBG, for abelian groups G. We show that the involution agrees with the classical one for a bimonoidal category associated to a ring and prove that it is not trivial in the above mentioned examples.

We prove a modified version of Previdi's conjecture stating that the Waldhausen space (K-theory space) of an exact category is delooped by the Waldhausen space (K-theory space) of Beilinson's category of generalized Tate vector spaces. Our modified version states the delooping with non-connective K-theory spectra, almost including Previdi's original statement. As a consequence we obtain that the negative K-groups of an exact category are given by the 0-th K-groups of the idempotent-completed iterated Beilinson categories, extending a theorem of Drinfeld on the first negative K-group.
We show that a $KK$-equivalence between two unital $C^*$-algebras produces a correspondence between their DG categories of finitely generated projective modules which is a $\mathbf{K}_*$-equivalence, where $\mathbf{K}_*$ is Waldhausen's $K$-theory. We discuss some connections with strong deformations of $C^*$-algebras and homological dualities. Motivated by a construction of Cuntz we associate a pro $C^*$-algebra to any simplicial set. We show that this construction is functorial with respect to proper maps of simplicial sets, that we define, and also respects proper homotopy equivalences. We …
Recall that the definition of the $K$-theory of an object C (e.g., a ring or a space) has the following pattern. One first associates to the object C a category A_C that has a suitable structure (exact, Waldhausen, symmetric monoidal, ...). One then applies to the category A_C a "$K$-theory machine", which provides an infinite loop space that is the $K$-theory K(C) of the object C. We study the first step of this process. What are the kinds of objects to be studied via $K$-theory? Given these types of objects, what structured categories should one associate to an object to obtain $K$-theoretic…
We decompose the K-theory space of a Waldhausen category in terms of its Dwyer-Kan simplicial localization. This leads to a criterion for functors to induce equivalences of K-theory spectra that generalizes and explains many of the criteria appearing in the literature. We show that under mild hypotheses, a weakly exact functor that induces an equivalence of homotopy categories induces an equivalence of K-theory spectra.
In this paper we introduce a new approach to determinant functors which allows us to extend Deligne's determinant functors for exact categories to Waldhausen categories, (strongly) triangulated categories, and derivators. We construct universal determinant functors in all cases by original methods which are interesting even for the known cases. Moreover, we show that the target of each universal determinant functor computes the corresponding $K$-theory in dimensions 0 and 1. As applications, we answer open questions by Maltsiniotis and Neeman on the $K$-theory of (strongly) triangulated catego…
The purpose of this short and elementary note is to identify some classes of exact categories introduced in L. Previdi's thesis. Among other things we show: (1) An exact category is partially abelian exact if and only if it is abelian. (2) An exact category satisfies the axioms AIC and AIC° if and only if it is quasi-abelian in the sense of J.-P. Schneiders. (3) An exact category satisfies AIC if and only if it is an additive category of the type considered by G. Laumon in his work on derived categories of filtered ${\cal D}$-modules. In all of the above classes all morphisms have kernels and …
In this paper we study the question of how to transfer homotopic structure from the category sD of simplicial objects in a fixed category D to D. To this end we use a sort of homotopy colimit s : sD --> D, which we call simple functor. For instance, the Bousfield-Kan homotopy colimit in a Quillen simplicial model category is an example of simple functor. As a remarkable example outside the setting of Quillen models we include Deligne simple of mixed Hodge complexes. We prove here that the simple functor induces an equivalence on the corresponding localized categories. We also describe a natura…
Let E be a Frobenius category, let_E_ denote its stable category. The shift functor on_E_ induces a first shift functor on the category of acyclic complexes with entries in_E_ by pointwise application. Shifting a complex by 3 positions yields a second shift functor on this category. Passing to the quotient modulo split acyclic complexes, Heller remarked that these two shift functors become isomorphic, via an isomorphism satisfying still a further compatibility. Moreover, Heller remarked that a choice of such an isomorphism determines a triangulation on_E_, except for the octahedral axiom. We g…
We develop a version of controlled algebra for simplicial rings. This generalizes the methods which lead to successful proofs of the algebraic K- theory isomorphism conjecture (Farrell-Jones Conjecture) for a large class of groups. This is the first step to prove the algebraic K-theory isomorphism conjecture for simplicial rings. We construct a category of controlled simplicial modules, show that it has the structure of a Waldhausen category and discuss its algebraic K-theory. We lay emphasis on detailed proofs. Highlights include the discussion of a simplicial cylinder functor, the gluing lem…
We present a method for computing $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy invariants of singularity categories of rings admitting suitable gradings. Using this we describe any such invariant, e.g. homotopy K-theory, for the stable categories of self-injective algebras admitting a connected grading. A remark is also made concerning the vanishing of all such invariants for cluster categories of type $A_{2n}$ quivers.
