Foliate systems are those which preserve some (possibly singular) foliation of phase space, such as systems with integrals, systems with continuous symmetries, and skew product systems. We study numerical integrators which also preserve the foliation. The case in which the foliation is given by the orbits of an action of a Lie group has a particularly nice structure, which we study in detail, giving conditions under which all foliate vector fields can be written as the sum of a vector field tangent to the orbits and a vector field invariant under the group action. This allows the application of many techniques of geometric integration, including splitting methods and Lie group integrators.
Since they were introduced in the 1990s, Lie group integrators have become a method of choice in many application areas. These include multibody dynamics, shape analysis, data science, image registration and biophysical simulations. Two important classes of intrinsic Lie group integrators are the Runge--Kutta--Munthe--Kaas methods and the commutator free Lie group integrators. We give a short introduction to these classes of methods. The Hamiltonian framework is attractive for many mechanical problems, and in particular we shall consider Lie group integrators for problems on cotangent bundles …
Since their introduction, Lie group integrators have become a method of choice in many application areas. Various formulations of these integrators exist, and in this work we focus on Runge--Kutta--Munthe--Kaas methods. First, we briefly introduce this class of integrators, considering some of the practical aspects of their implementation, such as adaptive time stepping. We then present some mathematical background that allows us to apply them to some families of Lagrangian mechanical systems. We conclude with an application to a nontrivial mechanical system: the N-fold 3D pendulum.
We study stochastic Poisson integrators for a class of stochastic Poisson systems driven by Stratonovich noise. Such geometric integrators preserve Casimir functions and the Poisson map property. For this purpose, we propose explicit stochastic Poisson integrators based on a splitting strategy, and analyse their qualitative and quantitative properties: preservation of Casimir functions, existence of almost sure or moment bounds, asymptotic preserving property, and strong and weak rates of convergence. The construction of the schemes and the theoretical results are illustrated through extensive…
This work outlines a fast, high-precision time-domain solver for scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations on hyperboloidal foliations of Kerr space-times. Time-domain Teukolsky equation solvers have typically used explicit methods, which numerically violate Noether symmetries and are Courant-limited. These restrictions can limit the performance of explicit schemes when simulating long-time extreme mass ratio inspirals, expected to appear in LISA band for 2-5 years. We thus explore symmetric (exponential, Padé or Hermite) integrators, which are unconditionally stable and known to…

In this paper, high-order numerical integrators on homogeneous spaces will be presented as an application of nonholonomic partitioned Runge-Kutta Munthe-Kaas (RKMK) methods on Lie groups. A homogeneous space $M$ is a manifold where a group $G$ acts transitively. Such a space can be understood as a quotient $M \cong G/H$, where $H$ a closed Lie subgroup, is the isotropy group of each point of $M$. The Lie algebra of $G$ may be decomposed into $\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{m} \oplus \mathfrak{h}$, where $\mathfrak{h}$ is the subalgebra that generates $H$ and $\mathfrak{m}$ is a subspace. Thus, varia…

A variational integrator of arbitrarily high-order on the special orthogonal group $SO(n)$ is constructed using the polar decomposition and the constrained Galerkin method. It has the advantage of avoiding the second-order derivative of the exponential map that arises in traditional Lie group variational methods. In addition, a reduced Lie--Poisson integrator is constructed and the resulting algorithms can naturally be implemented by fixed-point iteration. The proposed methods are validated by numerical simulations on $SO(3)$ which demonstrate that they are comparable to variational Runge--Kut…
This work gives a Lie operator derivation of various Boris solvers via a detailed study of trajectory errors in a constant magnetic field. These errors in the gyrocenter location and the gyroradius are the foundational basis for why Boris solvers existed, independent of any finite-difference schemes. This work shows that there are two distinct ways of eliminating these errors so that the trajectory of a charged particle in a constant magnetic field is exactly on the cyclotron orbit. One way reproduces the known second-order symmetric Boris solver. The other yields a previously unknown, but als…

We introduce a general framework of low regularity integrators which allows us to approximate the time dynamics of a large class of equations, including parabolic and hyperbolic problems, as well as dispersive equations, up to arbitrary high order on general domains. The structure of the local error of the new schemes is driven by nested commutators which in general require (much) lower regularity assumptions than classical methods do. Our main idea lies in embedding the central oscillations of the nonlinear PDE into the numerical discretisation. The latter is achieved by a novel decorated tre…
