It was proved by H. Whitney in 1933 that it is possible to mark a point in all curves in a continuous way. The main result of this paper extends the Whitney theorem to dimensions 2 and 3. Namely, we prove that it is possible to choose a point continuously in all two-dimensional surfaces sufficiently close to a given surface, and in all 3-manifolds sufficiently close to a given 3-manifold.
It was proved by H. Whitney in 1933 that a Serre fibration of compact metric spaces admits a global section provided every fiber is homeomorphic to the unit interval [0,1]. Results of this paper extend Whitney theorem to the case when all fibers are homeomorphic to a given compact two-dimensional manifold.
It was proved by H. Whitney in 1933 that a Serre fibration of compact metric spaces admits a global section provided every fiber is homeomorphic to the unit interval [0,1]. An extension of the Whitney's theorem to the case when all fibers are homeomorphic to some fixed compact two-dimensional manifold was proved by the authors \cite{BCS}. The main result of this paper proves the existence of local sections in a Serre fibration with all fibers homeomorphic to some fixed compact three-dimensional manifold.
Given some type of fibration on a 4-manifold $X$ with a torus regular fiber $T$, we may produce a new 4-manifold $X_T$ by performing torus surgery on $T$. There is a natural way to extend the fibration to $X_T$, but a multiple fiber (non-generic) singularity is introduced. We construct explicit generic fibrations (with only indefinite fold singularities) in a neighborhood of this multiple fiber. As an application this gives explicit constructions of broken Lefschetz fibrations on all elliptic surfaces (e.g. the family $E(n)_{p,q}$). As part of the construction we produce generic fibrations aro…
We consider complex surfaces, viewed as smooth $4$-dimensional manifolds, that admit hyperelliptic Lefschetz fibrations over the $2$-sphere. In this paper, we show that the minimal number of singular fibers of such fibrations is equal to $2g+4$ for even $g\geq4$. For odd $g\geq7$, we show that the number is greater than or equal to $2g+6$. Moreover, we discuss the minimal number of singular fibers in all hyperelliptic Lefschetz fibrations over the $2$-sphere as well.
We show that there exists an admissible nonorientable genus $g$ Lefschetz fibration with only one singular fiber over a closed orientable surface of genus $h$ if and only if $g \geq 4$ and $h \geq 1$.
In this paper, we give some relations in the mapping class groups of oriented closed surfaces in the form that a product of a small number of right hand Dehn twists is equal to a single commutator. Consequently, we find upper bounds for the minimal number of singular fibers in a Lefschetz fibration over the torus.
In his Ph.D. thesis, Burak Ozbagci described an algorithm computing signatures of Lefschetz fibrations where the input is a factorization of the monodromy into a product of Dehn twists. In this note, we give a reformulation of Ozbagci's algorithm which becomes much easier to implement. Our main tool is Wall's non-additivity formula applied to what we call partial fiber sum decomposition of a Lefschetz fibration over 2-disk. We show that our algorithm works for bordered Lefschetz fibrations over disk and it yields a formula for the signature of branched covers where the branched loci are regula…
We show that the minimal number of singular fibers $N(g,1)$ in a genus-$g$ Lefschetz fibration over the torus is at least $3$. As an application, we show that $N(g, 1) \in \{ 3, 4\}$ for $g\ge 5$, $N(g, 1) \in \{3, 4,5 \}$ for $g= 3, 4$ and $N(2,1) = 7$.
We prove that a Lefschetz fibration over the disc that, after compactification, has the same singular fibers as an extremal rational elliptic surface can be obtained by deleting a singular fiber and a section from the rational extremal elliptic surface, i.e. such a Lefschetz fibration is determined up to topological equivalence by its set of singular fibers. We get a complete clasification of Lefschetz fibrations with 2 $I_1$ fibers as a byproduct of our results. The proof is inspired by homological mirror symmetry and Karpov--Nogin's theorem on constructivity of helices on del Pezzo surfaces.…
Using theorems of Eliashberg and McDuff, Etnyre [Et] proved that the intersection form of a symplectic filling of a contact 3-manifold supported by planar open book is negative definite. In this paper, we prove a signature formula for allowable Lefschetz fibrations over $D^2$ with planar fiber by computing Maslov index appearing in Wall's non-additivity formula. The signature formula leads to an alternative proof of Etnyre's theorem via works of Niederkrüger and Wendl [NWe] and Wendl [We]. Conversely, Etnyre's theorem, together with the existence theorem of Stein structures on Lefschetz fibrat…
Using the recent results of Siebert and Tian about the holomorphicity of genus 2 Lefschetz fibrations with irreducible singular fibers, we show that any genus 2 Lefschetz fibration becomes holomorphic after fiber sum with a holomorphic fibration.
It is well known that, among closed spherical Seifert three-manifolds, only lens spaces and prism manifolds admit several Seifert fibrations which are not equivalent up to diffeomorphism. Moreover the former admit infinitely many fibrations, and the latter exactly two. In this work, we analyse the non-uniqueness phenomenon for orbifold Seifert fibrations. For any closed spherical Seifert three-orbifold, we determine the number of its inequivalent fibrations. When these are in a finite number (in fact, at most three) we provide a complete list. In case of infinitely many fibrations, we describe…
In this note we introduce certain invariants of real Lefschetz fibrations. We call these invariants {\em real Lefschetz chains}. We prove that if the fiber genus is greater than 1, then the real Lefschetz chains are complete invariants of real Lefschetz fibrations with only real critical values. If however the fiber genus is 1, real Lefschetz chains are not sufficient to distinguish real Lefschetz fibrations. We show that by adding a certain binary decoration to real Lefschetz chains, we get a complete invariant.
We give a short proof of a conjecture of Stipsicz on the minimality of fiber sums of Lefschetz fibrations, which was proved earlier by Usher. We then construct the first examples of genus g > 1 Lefschetz fibrations on minimal symplectic 4-manifolds which, up to diffeomorphisms of the summands, admit unique decompositions as fiber sums.
We consider certain type of fiber bundles with odd dimensional compact contact base, exact symplectic fibers, and the structure group contained in the group of exact symplectomorphisms of the fiber. We call such fibrations "contact symplectic fibrations". By a result of Hajduk-Walczak, some of these admit contact structures which are "compatible" (in a certain sense) with the corresponding fibration structures. We show that this result can be extended to get a compatible contact structure on any contact symplectic fibration, and also that isotopic contact structures on the base produce isotopi…
In this article, we generalize the classification of genus one Lefschetz fibrations to genus one simplified broken Lefschetz fibrations, which have fibers of genera one and zero. We classify genus one Lefschetz fibrations over the 2-disk with certain non-trivial global monodromies using chart descriptions, and identify the 4-manifolds admitting genus one simplified broken Lefschetz fibrations.
In this survey, we remind some fibrations structure theorems (also called Milnor's fibrations) recently proved in the real and complex case, in the local and global settings. We give several Poincaré-Hopf type formulae which relates the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of these fibers (also called Milnor's fibers) and indices (topological degree) of appropriated vector fields defined on spheres of radii small or big enough.
In this article we construct a family of knot surgery $4$-manifolds admitting arbitrarily many nonisomorphic Lefschetz fibration structures with the same genus fiber. We obtain such families by performing knot surgery on an elliptic surface $E(2)$ using connected sums of fibered knots obtained by Stallings twist from a slice knot $3_1 \sharp 3^*_1$. By comparing their monodromy groups induced from the corresponding monodromy factorizations, we show that they admit mutually nonisomorphic Lefschetz fibration structures.
Much work has been done on the existence and uniqueness of broken Lefschetz fibrations such as those by Auroux et al., Gay and Kirby, Lekili, Akbulut and Karakurt, Baykur, and Williams, but there has been a lack of explicit examples. A theorem of Gay and Kirby suggests the existence of a broken Lefschetz fibration of S^4 over S^2 with a 2-knot fiber. In the case of a spun or twist-spun torus knot, we present a procedure to construct such fibrations explicitly. The fibrations constructed have no cusps nor Lefschetz singularities.
We show that if $K$ is a fibered ribbon knot in $S^3=\partial B^4$ bounding a ribbon disk $D$, then given an extra transversality condition the fibration on $S^3\setminusν(K)$ extends to a fibration of $B^4\setminusν(D)$. This partially answers a question of Casson and Gordon. In particular, we show the fibration always extends when $D$ has exactly two local minima. More generally, we construct movies of singular fibrations on $4$-manifolds and describe a sufficient property of a movie to imply the underlying $4$-manifold is fibered over $S^1$.
This article provides sufficient conditions for a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with non zero first Betti number to fiber over the circle, and to find a fiber in $M$. Those conditions are formulated in terms of the behavior the circular characteristic in finite regular covers of $M$. We define the circular characteristic as an invariant associated to a non trivial cohomology class $α$ of $M$, using a Heegaard characteristic.
We study the fibration of augmented link complements. Given the diagram of an augmented link we associate a spanning surface and a graph. We then show that this surface is a fiber for the link complement if and only if the associated graph is a tree. We further show that fibration is preserved under Dehn filling on certain components of these links. This last result is then used to prove that within a very large class of links, called locally alternating augmented links, every link is fibered.
There exists a (relatively minimal) genus g Lefschetz fibration with only one singular fiber over a closed (Riemann) surface of genus h iff g>2 and h>1. The singular fiber can be chosen to be reducible or irreducible. Other results are that every Dehn twist on a closed surface of genus at least three is a product of two commutators and no Dehn twist on any closed surface is equal to a single commutator.
For each g > 2 and h > 1, we explicitly construct (1) fiber sum indecomposable relatively minimal genus g Lefschetz fibrations over genus h surfaces whose monodromies lie in the Torelli group, (2) fiber sum indecomposable genus g surface bundles over genus h surfaces whose monodromies are in the Torelli group (provided g > 3), and (3) infinitely many genus g Lefschetz fibrations over genus h surfaces that are not fiber sums of holomorphic ones.
By applying the lantern relation substitutions to the positive relation of the genus two Lefschetz fibration over $\mathbb{S}^{2}$. We show that $K3\#2 \overline{\mathbb{CP}}{}^{2}$ can be rationally blown down along seven disjoint copies of the configuration $C_2$. We compute the Seiberg-Witten invariant of the resulting symplectic 4-manifolds, and show that they are symplectically minimal. We also investigate how these exotic smooth 4-manifolds constructed via lantern relation substitution method are fiber sum decomposable. Furthermore by considering all the possible decompositions for each …
Kodaira's classification of singular fibers in elliptic fibrations and its translation into the language of monodromies and Lefschetz fibrations has been a boon to the study of 4-manifolds. In this article, we begin the work of translating between singular fibers of genus 2 families of algebraic curves and the positive Dehn twist factorizations of Lefschetz fibrations for a certain subset of the singularities described by Namikawa and Ueno in the 70s. We look at four families of hypersurface singularities in $\mathbb{C}^3$. Each hypersurface comes equipped with a fibration by genus 2 algebraic…
We show that some of centeral fibers of degenerations of hyperelliptic curves are realized as those trigonal curves. In particular, any hyperelliptic curve can be the central fiber of a degeneration of trigonal curves.
We investigate the maximal solid tubes around short simple geodesics in hyperbolic three-manifolds and how complex length of curves relate to closed, incompressible, least area minimal surfaces. As applications, we prove, there are some closed hyperbolic three-manifolds fibering over the circle which are not foliated by closed incompressible minimal surfaces diffeomorphic to the fiber. We also show, the existence of quasi-Fuchsian manifolds containing arbitrarily many embedded closed incompressible minimal surfaces. Our strategy is to prove main theorems under natural geometric conditions on t…
We introduce the $2$-nodal spherical deformation of certain singular fibers of genus $2$ fibrations, and use such deformations to construct various examples of simply connected minimal symplectic $4$-manifolds with small topology. More specifically, we construct new exotic minimal symplectic $4$-manifolds homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to ${\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#6({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$, ${\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#7({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$, and $3{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#k({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$ for $k=16, 17, 18, 19$ using combinations of such deformations, symplectic blowups, and (…
We discuss fibered commensurability of fibrations on a hyperbolic 3-manifold, a notion introduced by Calegari, Sun and Wang. We construct manifolds with non-symmetric but commensurable fibrations on the same fibered face. We also prove that if a given manifold M does not have any hidden symmetries, then M does not admit non-symmetric but commensu- rable fibrations. Finally, Theorem 3.1 of Calegari, Sun and Wang shows that every hyperbolic fibered commensurability class contains a unique minimal element. In this paper we provide a detailed discussion on the proof of the theorem in the cusped ca…
We investigate the bounded cohomology of Lefschetz fibrations. If a Lefschetz fibration has regular fiber of genus at least 2 and it has at least two distinct vanishing cycles, we show that its Euler class is not bounded. As a consequence, we exclude the existence of negatively curved metrics on Lefschetz fibrations with more than one singular fiber.
We study the magic manifold $N$ which is a hyperbolic and fibered $3$-manifold. We give an explicit construction of a fiber $F_a$ and its monodromy $:F_a \rightarrow F_a$ of the fibration associated to each fibered class $a$ of $N$. Let $δ_g$ (resp. $δ_g^+$) be the minimal dilatation of pseudo-Anosovs (resp. pseudo-Anosovs with orientable invariant foliations) defined on an orientable closed surface of genus $g$. As a consequence of our result, we obtain the first explicit construction of the following pseudo-Anosovs; a minimizer of $δ_7^+$ and conjectural minimizers of $δ_g$ for large $g$.
We construct examples of Lefschetz fibrations with prescribed singular fibers. By taking differences of pairs of such fibrations with the same singular fibers, we obtain new examples of surface bundles over surfaces with non-zero signature. From these we derive new upper bounds for the minimal genus of a surface representing a given element in the second homology of a mapping class group.
We construct characteristic classes of smooth (Hamiltonian) fibrations as as fiber integrals of products of Pontriagin (or Chern) classes of vertical vector bundles over the total space of the universal fibration. We give explicit formulae of these fiber integrals for toric manifolds and get estimates of the dimension of the cohomology groups of classifying spaces.
We give a slope equality for fibered surfaces whose general fiber is a smooth plane curve. As a corollary, we prove a "strong" Durfee-type inequality for isolated hypersurface surface singularities, which implies Durfee's strong conjecture for such singularities with non-negative topological Euler number of the exceptional set of the minimal resolution.
We study the classification of Lefschetz fibrations up to stabilization by fiber sum operations. We show that for each genus there is a `universal' fibration f^0_g with the property that, if two Lefschetz fibrations over S^2 have the same Euler-Poincare characteristic and signature, the same numbers of reducible singular fibers of each type, and admit sections with the same self-intersection, then after repeatedly fiber summing with f^0_g they become isomorphic. As a consequence, any two compact integral symplectic 4-manifolds with the same values of (c_1^2, c_2, c_1.[w], [w]^2) become symplec…
Here we prove that up to diffeomorphism every compact Stein manifold W of dimension 2n+2>4 admits a Lefschetz fibration over the two-disk with Stein regular fibers, such that the monodromy of the fibration is a symplectomorphism induced by compositions of right-handed Dehn twists along embedded Lagrangian n-spheres on the generic fiber. This generalizes the Stein surface case of n=1, previously proven by Loi-Piergallini and Akbulut-Ozbagci. More precisely, we show that up to Liouville isomorphism any Weinstein domain W admits a compatible compact convex Lefschetz fibration with Weinstein regul…
The topology of broken Lefschetz fibrations is studied by means of handle decompositions. We consider a slight generalization of round handles, and describe the handle diagrams for all that appear in dimension four. We establish simplified handlebody and monodromy representations for a certain subclass of broken Lefschetz fibrations/pencils, while showing that all near-symplectic closed 4-manifolds can be supported by these a la Auroux, Donaldson, Katzarkov. Various constructions of broken Lefschetz fibrations and a generalization of the symplectic fiber sum operation to the near-symplectic se…
We establish constraints on the topology of smooth Lefschetz fibrations with $4$-dimensional fibers, by studying the family Bauer-Furuta invariant. To compute this invariant, we analyze the framed bordism class of 1-dimensional Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces using the local index theorem by Bismut-Freed. Using this, we deduce new obstructions to the smooth isotopy to the identity for compositions of Dehn twists on $(-2)$-spheres in closed $4$-manifolds. We obtain several applications: (1) We exhibit the first examples of closed simply-connected symplectic $4$-manifolds admitting Torelli symplect…
A question of Griffiths-Schmid asks when the monodromy group of an algebraic family of complex varieties is arithmetic. We resolve this in the affirmative for the class of algebraic surfaces known as Atiyah-Kodaira manifolds, which have base and fibers equal to complete algebraic curves. Our methods are topological in nature and involve an analysis of the "geometric" monodromy, valued in the mapping class group of the fiber.
