We say that a discrete set $X =\{x_n\}_{n\in\dN_0}$ on the half-line $$0=x_0 < x_1 <x_2 <x_3<... <x_n<... <+\infty$$ is sparse if the distances $Δx_n = x_{n+1} -x_n$ between neighbouring points satisfy the condition $\frac{Δx_{n}}{Δx_{n-1}} \rightarrow +\infty$. In this paper half-line Schrödinger operators with point $δ$- and $δ^\prime$-interactions on a sparse set are considered. Assuming that strengths of point interactions tend to $\infty$ we give simple sufficient conditions for such Schrödinger operators to have non-empty singular continuous spectrum and to have purely singular continuou…
We establish quantitative upper and lower bounds for Schrödinger operators with complex potentials that satisfy some weak form of sparsity. Our first result is a quantitative version of an example, due to S.\ Boegli (Comm. Math. Phys., 2017, 352, 629-639), of a Schrödinger operator with eigenvalues accumulating to every point of the essential spectrum. The second result shows that the eigenvalue bounds of Frank (Bull. Lond. Math. Soc., 2011, 43, 745-750 and Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 2018, 370, 219-240) can be improved for sparse potentials. The third result generalizes a theorem of Klaus (Ann. …
In this paper we constructively determine a family of the spectral invariants of the multidimensional Schrodinger operator with a periodic potential by the given band functions.
In this paper we provide new asymptotic estimates of the Floquet exponents of Schrödinger operators on the circle. By the same techniques, known asymptotic estimates of various others spectral quantities are improved.
In this paper, we study the scattering theory of a class of continuum Schrödinger operators with random sparse potentials. The existence and completeness of wave operators are proven by establishing the uniform boundedness of modified free resolvents and modified perturbed resolvents, and by invoking a previous result on the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum below zero.
We demonstrate criteria, purely based on finite subwords of the potential, to guarantee spectral inclusion as well as Hausdorff approximation of pseudospectra or even spectra of generalized Schrödinger operators on the discrete line or half-line. In fact, our results are neither limited to Schrödinger or self-adjoint operators, nor to Hilbert space or 1D.
In this paper the localization properties of the spectral expansions of distributions related to the self adjoint extension of the Schrodinger operator are investigated. Spectral decompositions of the distributions and some classes of distributions are defined. Estimations for Riesz means of the spectral decompositions of the distributions in the norm of the Sobolev classes with negative order are obtained.
We investigate the equivalence between dynamical localization and localization properties of eigenfunctions of Schrödinger Hamiltonians. We introduce three classes of equivalent properties and study the relationships between them. These relationships are shown to be optimal thanks to counter examples.
It is shown that there exits a lower bound $α>0$ to the Hausdorff dimension of the spectral measures of the one-dimensional period doubling substitution Schrödinger operator, and, generically in the hull of such sequence, $α$ is also a lower bound to the upper packing dimension of spectral measures.
In this article we study the semiclassical spectral measures associated with Schrödinger operators on $R^n$. In particular we compute the first few coefficients of the asymptotic expansions of these measures and, as an application, give an alternative proof of Colin de Verdiere's result on recovering one dimensional potential wells from semiclassical spectral data. We also study the relation of semiclassical spectra measures to Birkhoff normal forms and describe a generalization of the asymptotic expansion above to the Schrödinger operator in the presence of a magnetic field.
We consider Schrödinger operators on sparse graphs. The geometric definition of sparseness turn out to be equivalent to a functional inequality for the Laplacian. In consequence, sparseness has in turn strong spectral and functional analytic consequences. Specifically, one consequence is that it allows to completely describe the form domain. Moreover, as another consequence it leads to a characterization for discreteness of the spectrum. In this case we determine the first order of the corresponding eigenvalue asymptotics.
We prove that one-dimensional reflectionless Schrödinger operators with spectrum a homogeneous set in the sense of Carleson, belonging to the class introduced by Sodin and Yuditskii, have purely absolutely continuous spectra. This class includes all earlier examples of reflectionless almost periodic Schrödinger operators. In addition, we construct examples of reflectionless Schrödinger operators with more general types of spectra, given by the complement of a Denjoy-Widom-type domain, which exhibit a singular component.
In this paper we continue the study of the spectral gap of Schrödinger operators on large intervals and subject to Neumann boundary conditions. The main goal is to derive a lower bound on the spectral gap which is polynomial in the interval length. This bound is derived for a class of bounded potentials of compact support which are weak enough in a suitable sense.
We prove that Jacobi, CMV, and Schrödinger operators, which are reflectionless on a homogeneous set E (in the sense of Carleson), under the assumption of a Blaschke-type condition on their discrete spectra accumulating at E, have purely absolutely continuous spectrum on E.
We study location of eigenvalues of one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators with complex $\ell^{p}$-potentials for $1\leq p\leq \infty$. In the case of $\ell^{1}$-potentials, the derived bound is shown to be optimal. For $p>1$, two different spectral bounds are obtained. The method relies on the Birman-Schwinger principle and various techniques for estimations of the norm of the Birman-Schwinger operator.
We consider a semi-classical Schrödinger operator, -h^2Δ+ V(x). Assuming that the potential admits a unique global minimum and that the eigenvalues of the Hessian are linearly independent over the rationals, we show that the low-lying eigenvalues of the operator determine the Taylor series of the potential at the minimum.
We find the high energy asymptotics for the singular Weyl--Titchmarsh m-functions and the associated spectral measures of perturbed spherical Schrödinger operators (also known as Bessel operators). We apply this result to establish an improved local Borg-Marchenko theorem for Bessel operators as well as uniqueness theorems for the radial quantum scattering problem with nontrivial angular momentum.
The scattering matrix of the Schrodinger operator with smooth short-range electric and magnetic potentials is considered. The asymptotic density of the eigenvalues of this scattering matrix in the high energy regime is determined. An explicit formula for this density is given. This formula involves only the magnetic vector-potential.
The construction of "sparse potentials", suggested in \cite{RS09} for the lattice $\Z^d,\ d>2$, is extended to a wide class of combinatorial and metric graphs whose global dimension is a number $D>2$. For the Schrödinger operator $-\D-\a V$ on such graphs, with a sparse potential $V$, we study the behavior (as $\a\to\infty$) of the number $N_-(-\D-\a V)$ of negative eigenvalues of $-\D-\a V$. We show that by means of sparse potentials one can realize any prescribed asymptotic behavior of $N_-(-\D-\a V)$ under very mild regularity assumptions. A similar construction works also for the lattice $…
The principal purpose of this note is to provide a reconstruction procedure for distributional matrix-valued potential coefficients of Schrödinger-type operators on a half-line from the underlying Weyl-Titchmarsh function.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the spectral gap of Schrödinger operators in two and higher dimensions and in a limit where the volume of the domain tends to infinity. Depending on properties of the underlying potential, we will find different asymptotic behaviours of the gap. In some cases the gap behaves as the gap of the free Dirichlet Laplacian and in some cases it does not.
We explore the sparsity of Weyl-Titchmarsh $m$-functions of discrete Schrödinger operators. Due to this, the set of their $m$-functions cannot be dense on the set of those for Jacobi operators. All this reveals why an inverse spectral theory for discrete Schrödinger operators via their spectral measures should be difficult. To obtain the result, de Branges theory of canonical systems is applied to work on them, instead of Weyl-Titchmarsh $m$-functions.
In this paper we give a complete description of the spectral analysis of the Schrodinger operator L(V) with the optical potentil. First we consider the Bolch eigenvalues and spectrum of L(V). Then using it we investigate spectral singularities and essential spectral singularities (ESS). We prove that the operator L(V) has no ESS and has ESS respectively if and only if V is not a critical point and V is a critical point. Using it we classify the spectral expansion in term of the critical points. Finally we discuss the critical points, formulate some conjectures and describe the changes of the s…
We study spectral properties of convolution operators $\mathcal L$ and their perturbations $H=\mathcal L+v(x)$ by compactly supported potentials. Results are applied to determine the front propagation of a population density governed by operator $H$ with a compactly supported initial density provided that $H$ has positive eigenvalues. If there is no positive spectrum, then the stabilization of the population density is proved.
We announce three results in the theory of Jacobi matrices and Schrödinger operators. First, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a measure to be the spectral measure of a Schrödinger operator $-\f{d^2}{dx^2} +V(x)$ on $L^2 (0,\infty)$ with $V\in L^2 (0,\infty)$ and $u(0)=0$ boundary condition. Second, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the Jacobi parameters for the associated orthogonal polynomials to have Szegő asymptotics. Finally, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions on a measure to be the spectral measure of a Jacobi matrix with exponential decay at a give…
We examine two kinds of spectral theoretic situations: First, we recall the case of self-adjoint half-line Schrödinger operators on $[a,\infty)$, $a\in\mathbb{R}$, with a regular finite end point $a$ and the case of Schrödinger operators on the real line with locally integrable potentials, which naturally lead to Herglotz functions and $2\times 2$ matrix-valued Herglotz functions representing the associated Weyl-Titchmarsh coefficients. Second, we contrast this with the case of self-adjoint half-line Schrödinger operators on $(a,\infty)$ with a potential strongly singular at the end point $a$.…
Exact Hausdorff dimensions are computed for singular continuous components of the spectral measures of a class of Schrödinger operators in bounded intervals.
In this paper we obtain sharp Lieb-Thirring inequalities for a Schrödinger operator on semi-axis with a matrix potential and show how they can be used to other related problems. Among them are spectral inequalities on star graphs and spectral inequalities for Schrödinger operators on half-spaces with Robin boundary conditions.
We consider Schrödinger operators $H^h = (ih d+{\bf A})^* (ih d+{\bf A})$ with the periodic magnetic field ${\bf B}=d{\bf A}$ on covering spaces of compact manifolds. Under some assumptions on $\bf B$, we prove that there are arbitrarily large number of gaps in the spectrum of these operators in the semiclassical limit of strong magnetic field $h\to 0$.
Starting from the spectrum of Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{R}^n$, we propose a method to detect critical points of the potential. We argue semi-classically on the basis of a mathematically rigorous version of Gutzwiller's trace formula which expresses spectral statistics in term of classical orbits. A critical point of the potential with zero momentum is an equilibrium of the flow and generates certain singularities in the spectrum. Via sharp spectral estimates, this fluctuation indicates the presence of a critical point and allows to reconstruct partially the local shape of the potential…
We characterize the space of the so-called planar mixed automorphic forms of type $(ν,μ)$ with respect to an equivariant pair $(ρ,τ)$ as the image of the usual automorphic forms by an appropriate transform and we investigate some concrete basic spectral properties of a magnetic Schrodinger operator acting on them. The associated polynomials constitute classes of generalized complex polynomials of Hermite type.
In this note we provide an explicit lower bound on the spectral gap of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with non-negative bounded potentials and subject to Neumann boundary conditions.
The main objective of this paper is to systematically develop a spectral and scattering theory for selfadjoint Schrödinger operators with $δ$-interactions supported on closed curves in $\mathbb R^3$. We provide bounds for the number of negative eigenvalues depending on the geometry of the curve, prove an isoperimetric inequality for the principal eigenvalue, derive Schatten--von Neumann properties for the resolvent difference with the free Laplacian, and establish an explicit representation for the scattering matrix.
We study half-line Schrödinger operators with locally $H^{-1}$ potentials. In the first part, we focus on a general spectral theoretic framework for such operators, including a Last--Simon-type description of the absolutely continuous spectrum and sufficient conditions for different spectral types. In the second part, we focus on potentials which are decaying in a local $H^{-1}$ sense; we establish a spectral transition between short-range and long-range potentials and an $\ell^2$ spectral transition for sparse singular potentials. The regularization procedure used to handle distributional pot…
A periodic Schrödinger operator on a noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$ such that $H^1(M, \mathbb R)=0$ endowed with a properly discontinuous cocompact isometric action of a discrete group is considered. Under some additional conditions on the magnetic field existence of an arbitrary large number of gaps in the spectrum of such an operator in the semiclassical limit is established. The proofs are based on the study of the tunneling effect in the corresponding quantum system.
We study the influence of certain geometric perturbations on the spectra of self-adjoint Schrödinger operators on compact metric graphs. Results are obtained for permutation invariant vertex conditions, which, amongst others, include $δ$ and $δ'$-type conditions. We show that adding edges to the graph or joining vertices changes the eigenvalues monotonically. However, the monotonicity properties may differ from what is known for the previously studied cases of Kirchhoff (or standard) and $δ$-conditions and may depend on the signs of the coefficients in the vertex conditions.
In this paper we investigate the spectral and the scattering theory of Schrödinger operators acting on perturbed periodic discrete graphs. The perturbations considered are of two types: either a multiplication operator by a short-range or a long-range function, or a short-range type modification of the measure defined on the vertices and on the edges of the graph. Mourre theory is used for describing the nature of the spectrum of the underlying operators. For short-range perturbations, existence and completeness of local wave operators are also proved.
We consider a class of translationally invariant magnetic fields such that the corresponding potential has a constant direction. Our goal is to study basic spectral properties of the Schrödinger operator ${\bf H}$ with such a potential. In particular, we show that the spectrum of ${\bf H}$ is absolutely continuous and we find its location. Then we study the long-time behaviour of solutions $\exp(-i {\bf H} t)f$ of the time dependent Schrödinger equation. It turnes out that a quantum particle remains localized in the plane orthogonal to the direction of the potential. Its propagation in this di…
The aim of this paper is to establish uniform estimates of the spectrum's bottom of the Neumann realization of $(i\nabla+q\A)^2$ on a bounded open set $\Om$ with smooth boundary when $|\nabla\times\A|=1$ and $q\to+\infty$. This problem was motivated by a question occuring in the theory of liquid crystals and appears also in superconductivity questions in large domains.
In the first part of the paper we consider the Schrödinger operator $ -Δ-V(x),\quad V>0. $ We discuss the relation between the behavior of $V$ at the infinity and the properties of the negative spectrum of $H$. After that, we consider the case when $V$ changes its sign: $ V=V_+-V_-$, $2V_\pm=|V|\pm V. $ In this case, we treat $V$ and $-V$ symmetrically and study the relation between the behavior of $V$ at the infinity and the negative spectra of the operators $H_+=-Δ+V$ and $H_-=-Δ-V$.
We consider discrete Schrödinger operators with pattern Sturmian potentials. This class of potentials strictly contains the class of Sturmian potentials, for which the spectral properties of the associated Schrödinger operators are well understood. In particular, it is known that for every Sturmian potential, the associated Schrödinger operator has zero-measure spectrum and purely singular continuous spectral measures. We conjecture that the same statements hold in the more general class of pattern Sturmian potentials. We prove partial results in support of this conjecture. In particular, we c…
We establish new necessary and sufficient conditions for the discreteness of spectrum and strict positivity of magnetic Schrödinger operators with a positive scalar potential. They extend earlier results by Maz'ya and Shubin (2005), which were obtained in case when there is no magnetic field. We also derive two-sided estimates for the bottoms of spectrum and essential spectrum, extending results by Maz'ya and Otelbaev (1977). The main idea is to optimize the gauge of the magnetic field, thus reducing the quadratic form to one without magnetic field (but with an appropriately adjusted scalar po…
We investigate the spectral properties of Schrödinger operators in l^2(Z) with limit-periodic potentials. The perspective we take was recently proposed by Avila and is based on regarding such potentials as generated by continuous sampling along the orbits of a minimal translation of a Cantor group. This point of view allows one to separate the base dynamics and the sampling function. We show that for any such base dynamics, the spectrum is a Cantor set of positive Lebesgue measure and purely absolutely continuous for a dense set of sampling functions, and it is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue me…
We study continuum Schrödinger operators on the real line whose potentials are comprised of two compactly supported square-integrable functions concatenated according to an element of the Fibonacci substitution subshift over two letters. We show that the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum tends to one in the small-coupling and high-energy regimes, regardless of the shape of the potential pieces.
We discuss the spectral properties of singular Schrödinger operators in three dimensions with the interaction supported by an equilateral star, finite or infinite. In the finite case the discrete spectrum is nonempty if the star arms are long enough. Our main result concerns spectral optimization: we show that the principal eigenvalue is uniquely maxi\-mized when the arms are arranged in one of the known five sharp configurations known as solutions of the closely related Thomson problem.
This paper summarizes the contents of a plenary talk at the Pan African Congress of Mathematics held in Rabat in July 2017. We provide a survey of recent results on spectral properties of Schrödinger operators with singular interactions supported by manifolds of codimension one and of Robin billiards with the focus on the geometrically induced discrete spectrum and its asymptotic expansions in term of the model parameters.
We study the manner in which spectral shift functions associated with self-adjoint one-dimensional Schrödinger operators on the finite interval $(0,R)$ converge in the infinite volume limit $R\to\infty$ to the half-line spectral shift function. Relying on a Fredholm determinant approach combined with certain measure theoretic facts, we show that prior vague convergence results in the literature in the special case of Dirichlet boundary conditions extend to the notion of weak convergence and arbitrary separated self-adjoint boundary conditions at $x=0$ and $x=R$.
We prove that the spectrum of an n-dimensional semiclassical radial Schrödinger operator determines the potential within a large class of potentials for which we assume no symmetry or analyticity. Our proof is based on the first two semiclassical trace invariants and on the isoperimetric inequality.
We prove and apply two theorems: First, a quantitative, scale-free unique continuation estimate for functions in a spectral subspace of a Schrödinger operator on a bounded or unbounded domain, second, a perturbation and lifting estimate for edges of the essential spectrum of a self-adjoint operator under a semi-definite perturbation. These two results are combined to obtain lower and upper Lipschitz bounds on the function parametrizing locally a chosen edge of the essential spectrum of a Schrödinger operator in dependence of a coupling constant. Analogous estimates for eigenvalues, possibly in…
We study fluctuations of polynomial linear statistics for discrete Schrödinger operators with a random decaying potential. We describe a decomposition of the space of polynomials into a direct sum of three subspaces determining the growth rate of the variance of the corresponding linear statistic. In particular, each one of these subspaces defines a unique critical value for the decay-rate exponent, above which the random variable has a limit that is sensitive to the underlying distribution and below which the random variable has asymptotically Gaussian fluctuations.
We consider perturbations of quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators on the integer lattice with analytic sampling functions by decaying potentials and seek decay conditions under which various spectral properties are preserved. In the (almost) reducibility regime we prove that for perturbations with finite first moment, the essential spectrum remains purely absolutely continuous and the newly created discrete spectrum must be finite in each gap of the unperturbed spectrum. We also prove that for fixed phase, Anderson localization occurring for almost all frequencies in the regime of positive Lya…
In this paper we investigate the spectrum and spectrality of the one-dimensional Schrodinger operator with a periodic PT-symmetric complex-valued potential.
