We consider the problem of recovering l-adic representations from a knowledge of the character values at the Frobenius elements associated to l-adic representations constructed algebraically out of the original representations. These results generalize earlier results in of the author concerning refinements of strong multiplicity one for $l$-adic represntations, and a result of Ramakrishnan recovering modular forms from a knowledge of the squares of the Hecke eigenvalues. For example, we show that if the characters of some tensor or symmetric powers of two absolutely irreducible l-adic representation with the algebraic envelope of the image being connected, agree at the Frobenius elements corresponding to a set of places of positive upper density, then the representations are twists of each other by a finite order character.
In this note, we consider function fields of higher-dimensional algebraic varieties defined over non-local fields, and show how the Galois action on the cohomology such function fields can be used to parameterize their divisorial valuations. By applying a recent theorem of Pop, we observe that, in dimension $\geq 3$, this information is enough to completely determine the function field and the base-field in question.
We give a direct approach to recover some of the results of Wiles and Tayor on modularity of certain 2-dimensional p-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of Q.
We consider the problem of determining the relationship between two representations knowing that some tensor or symmetric power of the original represetations coincide. Combined with refinements of strong multiplicity one, we show that if the characters of some tensor or symmetric powers of two absolutely irreducible $l$-adic representation with the algebraic envelope of the image being connected, agree at the Frobenius elements corresponding to a set of places of positive upper density, then the representations are twists of each other by a finite order character.
Let $p$ be a prime number. There are properties called ``overconvergence'' and ``$F$-analyticity'' for $p$-adic Galois representations of a $p$-adic field $F$. By Berger's work, it is known that $F$-analyticity is stricter than overconvergence. In this article, we show that, in many cases, an overconvergent Galois representation is $F$-analytic up to a twist by a character. This result emphasizes the necessity of the theory of $(φ,Γ)$-modules over the multivariable Robba ring, by which we expect to study all $p$-adic Galois representations.
We give a new formula for the Artin conductor of an $\ell$-adic representation of the Weil group of a local field of residue characteristic $p\neq\ell$.
We prove that the density of ramified primes in semisimple p-adic representations of Galois groups of number fields is 0. Ravi Ramakrishna has produced examples of such representations that are infinitely ramified.
I will survey some results in the theory of modular representations of a reductive $p$-adic group, in positive characteristic $\ell \neq p$ and $\ell=p$.
For a global function field K of positive characteristic p, we show that Artin conjecture for L-functions of geometric p-adic Galois representations of K is true in a non-trivial p-adic disk but is false in the full p-adic plane. In particular, we prove the non-rationality of the geometric unit root L-functions.
Let $K$ be a complete, discretely valued field with finite residue field and $G_K$ its absolute Galois group. The subject of this note is the study of the set of positive integers $d$ for which there exists an absolutely irreducible $\ell$-adic representation of $G_K$ of dimension $d$ with rational traces on inertia. Our main result is that non-Sophie Germain primes are not in this set when the residue characteristic of $K$ is $> 3$. The result stated in the title is a special case.
In this note we produce examples of converging sequences of Galois representations, and study some of their properties. Some of the results here are used in the preprint math.NT/0210296.
Let $J$ be an abelian variety over a number field such that the center of its endomorphism ring is equal to the ring of integers. If the endomorphism ring splits at a prime number $l$, then the $l$-adic representation is defined by the minuscule weights (microweights) of simple classical Lie algebras.
We describe the generic blocks in the category of smooth locally admissible mod $2$ representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_2)$. As an application we obtain new cases of Breuil--Mézard and Fontaine--Mazur conjectures for $2$-dimensional $2$-adic Galois representations.
We prove new automorphy lifting theorems for residually reducible Galois representations of unitary type in which the residual representation is permitted to have an arbitrary number of irreducible constituents.
Let G be a connected simple adjoint p-adic group not isomorphic to a projective linear group PGL(m,D) of a division algebra D, or an adjoint ramified unitary group of a split hermitian form in 3 variables. We prove that G admits an irreducible admissible supercuspidal (i.e. supersingular) representation over any field of characteristic p.
In this paper we show that two dimensional (mod p) Galois representations satisfying mild hypotheses can be lifted to p-adic Galois representations ramified at infinitely many primes such that the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius at a density one set of unramified primes are defined over the rational integers. In particular we show that often one can "density one compatibly" lift mod p and mod q Galois representations.
Let $K$ be a $p$-adic field and $E$ an elliptic curve over $K$ with potential good reduction. For some large Galois extensions $L$ of $K$ containing all $p$-power roots of unity, we show the vanishing of certain Galois cohomology groups of $L$ with values in the $p$-adic representation associated with $E$. This generalizes some results of Coates, Sujatha and Wintenberger.
In this paper, we give a fermionic p-adic integral representions of Benstein polynomials associated with Euler numbers and polynomials. Finally, we give some interesting identities for the Euler numbers by using the properties of our integral represention.
Let $D$ be the non-split quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{Q}_p$. We prove that a class of admissible unitary Banach space representations of $D^{\times}$ of global origin are topologically of finite length.
We prove modularity of some two dimensional, 2-adic Galois representations over totally real fields that are nearly ordinary and that are residually dihedral. We do this by employing the strategy of Skinner and Wiles, using Hida families, together with the 2-adic patching method of Khare and Wintenberger. As an application we deduce modularity of some elliptic curves over totally real fields that have good ordinary or multiplicative reduction at places above 2.
Samit Dasgupta has proved a formula factoring a certain restriction of a 3-variable Rankin-Selberg $p$-adic $L$-function as a product of a 2-variable $p$-adic $L$-function related to the adjoint representation of a Hida family and a Kubota-Leopoldt $p$-adic $L$-function. We prove a result involving Selmer groups that along with Dasgupta's result is consistent with the main conjectures associated to the 4-dimensional representation (to which the 3-variable $p$-adic $L$-function is associated), the $3$-dimensional representation (to which the $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-function is associated) and…
We consider continuous representations of the Galois group G of a number field K taking values in the completion C of an algebraic closure A of the field of l-adic numbers. We give a construction of irreducible representations of G in GL(2,C) which cannot be conjugated into GL(2,A) but for which there exist density-one sets of primes with Frobenius traces in A. We also show that any such representation must be ramified at infinitely many primes of K.
This is a revised version of ANT-0332: "A support problem for the intermediate Jacobians of l-adic representations", by G. Banaszak, W. Gajda & P. Krason, which was placed on these archives on the 29th of January 2002. Following a suggestion of the referee we have subdivided the paper into two separate parts: "Support problem for the intermediate Jacobians of l-adic representations", and "On Galois representations for abelian varieties with complex and real multiplications". Our results on the image of Galois and the Mumford-Tate conjecture for some RM abelian varieties are contained in the se…
We prove a simple explicit formula for the local Katz-Radon transform of an l-adic representation of the Galois group of the fraction field of a strictly henselian discrete valuation ring with positive residual characteristic, which can be defined as the local additive convolution with a fixed tame character. The formula is similar to one proved by D. Arinkin in the D-module setting, and answers a question posed by N. Katz.
Let V be a p-adic representation of the absolute Galois group G of Q_p that becomes crystalline over a finite tame extension, and assume p odd. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for V to be isomorphic to the Tate module V_p(A) of an abelian variety A defined over Q_p. These conditions are stated on the filtered (ϕ,G)-module attached to V.
Darmon's conjecture on a relation between cyclotomic units over real quadratic fields and certain algebraic regulators was recently solved by Mazur and Rubin by using their theory of Kolyvagin systems. In this paper, we formulate a "non-explicit" version of Darmon's conjecture for Euler systems defined for general $p$-adic representations, and prove it. In the process of the proof, we introduce a notion of "algebraic Kolyvagin systems", and develop their properties.
These are notes from a 3-lecture course given by V. Dokchitser at the ICTP in Trieste, Italy, 1st--5th of September 2014, as part of a graduate summer school on "L-functions and modular forms". The course is meant to serve as an introduction to l-adic Galois representations over local fields with "l not equal to p", and has a slightly computational bent. It is worth mentioning that the course is not about varieties and their etale cohomology, but merely about the representation theory.
The aim of this article is to prove Zariski density of crystalline representations in the rigid analytic space associated to the universal deformation ring of a d-dimensional mod p representation of Gal(\bar{K}/K) for any d and for any p-adic field K. This is a generalization of the results of Colmez, Kisin (d=2, K=Q_p), of the author (d=2, any K), of Chenevier (any d, K=Q_p). A key ingredient for the proof is to construct a p-adic family of trianguline representations. In this article, we construct (an approximation of) this family by generalizing Kisin's theory of finite slope subspace X_{fs…
Given an elliptic curve $E$ over a local field $K$ with residue characteristic $3$, we investigate the action of the absolute Galois group of $K$ in the case of potentially good reduction. In particular the only not completely known case is that of the $\ell$-adic Galois representation attached to an elliptic curve such that the image of inertia is non-cyclic, and isomorphic to $C_3 \rtimes C_4$. In this work we describe such a representation explicitly.
We show how our p-adic method to compute Galois representations occurring in the torsion of Jacobians of algebraic curves can be adapted to modular curves. The main ingredient is the use of "moduli-friendly" Eisenstein series introduced by Makdisi, which allow us to evaluate modular forms at p-adic of modular curves points and dispenses us of the need for equations of modular curves and for q-expansion computations. The resulting algorithm compares very favourably to the complex-analytic method.
A result due to R. Greenberg gives a relation between the cardinality of Selmer groups of elliptic curves over number fields and the characteristic power series of Pontryagin duals of Selmer groups over cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extensions at good ordinary primes $p$. We extend Greenberg's result to more general $p$-adic Galois representations, including a large subclass of those attached to $p$-ordinary modular forms of level $Γ_0(N)$ with $p\nmid N$.
We prove new automorphy lifting theorems for essentially conjugate self-dual Galois representations into $GL_n$. Existing theorems require that the residual representation have 'big' image, in a certain technical sense. Our theorems are based on a strengthening of the Taylor-Wiles method which allows one to weaken this hypothesis.
We develop a theory of `non-abelian higher special elements' in the non-commutative exterior powers of the Galois cohomology of $p$-adic representations. We explore their relation to the theory of organising matrices and thus to the Galois module structure of Selmer modules. In concrete applications, we relate our general theory to the formulation of refined conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type and to the Galois structure of Tate-Shafarevich and Selmer groups of abelian varieties.
We study G-valued semi-stable Galois deformation rings where G is a reductive group. We develop a theory of Kisin modules with G-structure and use this to identify the connected components of crystalline deformation rings of minuscule p-adic Hodge type with the connected components of moduli of "finite flat models with G-structure." The main ingredients are a construction in integral p-adic Hodge theory using Liu's theory of $(φ, \widehat{G})$-modules and the local models constructed by Pappas and Zhu.
The main conjecture of Iwasawa theory is a conjecture on the relation between a Selmer group and a conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function. This conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function is expected to satisfy a conjectural functional equation in a certain sense. In view of the main conjecture and this conjectural functional equation, one would expect to have certain algebraic relationship between the Selmer group attached to a Galois representation and the Selmer group attached to the Tate twist of the dual of the Galois representation. It is precisely a component of this algebraic relationship that this p…
We consider the Galois representation associated with a finite slope $p$-adic family of modular forms. We prove that the Lie algebra of its image contains a congruence Lie subalgebra of a non-trivial level. We describe the largest such level in terms of the congruences of the family with $p$-adic CM forms.
We begin a systematic investigation of universal norms for $p$-adic representations in higher rank Iwasawa theory. After establishing the basic properties of the module of higher rank universal norms we construct an Iwasawa-theoretic pairing that is relevant to this setting. This allows us, for example, to refine the classical Iwasawa Main Conjecture for cyclotomic fields, and also to give applications to various well-known conjectures in arithmetic concerning Iwasawa invariants and leading terms of $L$-functions.
Drinfeld-modules and $A$-motives are the function field analogous of elliptic curves and abelian varieties. For the latter one can construct the $l$-adic Galois representation and can ask if its image is open. For Drinfeld-modules this question was answered by Pink and his coauthors. We clarify the rank one case for $A$-motives and show that the image of Galois is open if and only if the virtual dimension is prime to the characteristic of the ground field.
We use modular symbols to construct p-adic L-functions for cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations on GL(2n), which admit a Shalika model. Our construction differs from former ones in that it systematically makes use of the representation theory of p-adic groups.
Using the theory of $(ϕ,Γ)$-modules and the formalism of Selmer complexes we construct the p-adic height for p-adic representations with coefficients in an affinoid algebra over $Q_p$.
We describe two new packages ExactpAdics and ExactpAdicsII for the Magma computer algebra system for working with p-adic numbers exactly, in the sense that numbers are represented lazily to infinite p-adic precision. This has the benefits of increasing user-friendliness and speeding up some computations, as well as forcibly producing provable results. The two packages use different methods for lazy evaluation, which we describe and compare in detail. The intention is that this article will be of benefit to anyone wanting to implement similar functionality in other languages.
As a natural generalization of the notion of `higher rank Euler system', we develop a theory of `higher special elements' in the exterior power biduals of the Galois cohomology of $p$-adic representations. We show, in particular, that such elements encode detailed information about the structure of Galois cohomology groups and are related by families of congruences involving natural height pairings on cohomology. As a first concrete application of the approach, we use it to refine, and extend, a variety of existing results and conjectures concerning the values of derivatives of Dirichlet $L$-s…
The goal of this article is to construct explicitly a p-adic family of representations (which are dihedral representations), to construct their associated (phi,Gamma)-modules by writing down explicit matrices for phi and for the action of Gamma, and finally to determine which of these are trianguline.
In this paper we present a description of the Galois representation attached to an elliptic curve defined over a $2$-adic field $K$, in the case where the image of inertia is non-abelian. There are two possibilities for the image of inertia, namely $Q_8$ and $SL_2(\mathbb{F}_3)$, and in each case we need to distinguish whether the inertia degree of $K$ over $\mathbb{Q}_2$ is even or odd. The result presented here can be implemented in an algorithm to compute explicitly the Galois representation in these four cases.
Let K be a p-adic local field with residue field k such that [k:k^p]=p^e<\infty and V be a p-adic representation of Gal(\bar{K}/K). Then, by using the theory of p-adic differential modules, we show that V is a potentially crystalline (resp. potentially semi-stable) representation of Gal(\bar{K}/K) if and only if V is a potentially crystalline (resp. potentially semi-stable) representation of Gal(\bar{K^{pf}}/K^{pf}) where K^{pf}/K is a certain p-adic local field whose residue field is the smallest perfect field k^{pf} containing k. As an application, we prove the p-adic monodromy theorem of Fo…
We compare the Pontryagin duals of fine Selmer groups of two congruent $p$-adic Galois representations over admissible pro-$p$, $p$-adic Lie extensions $K_\infty$ of number fields $K$. We prove that in several natural settings the $π$-primary submodules of the Pontryagin duals are pseudo-isomorphic over the Iwasawa algebra; if the coranks of the fine Selmer groups are not equal, then we can still prove inequalities between the $μ$-invariants. In the special case of a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty/K$, we also compare the Iwasawa $λ$-invariants of the fine Selmer groups, even in situations …
The l-adic parabolic cohomology groups attached to noncongruence subgroups of SL_2(Z) are finite-dimensional representations of Gal(Qbar/F) for some number field F. We exhibit examples (with F=Q) giving rise to Galois representations whose images are open subgroups of the full group of symplectic similitudes (of arbitrary dimension). The determination of the image of the Galois group relies on Katz's classification theorem for reductive subalgebras of gl(N) containing a principal nilpotent element; the paper also contains a short conceptual proof of this theorem, suggested by I. Gronowski.
Let k be an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic, let K/k be a finitely generated field extension and let X be a separated scheme of finite type over K. For each prime ell, the absolute Galois group of K acts on the ell-adic etale cohomology modules of X. We prove that this family of representations varying over ell is almost independent in the sense of Serre, i.e., that the fixed fields inside an algebraic closure of K of the kernels of the representations for all ell become linearly disjoint over a finite extension of K. In doing this, we also prove a number of interesting f…
Given a Weil-Deligne representation of the Weil group of an $\ell$-adic number field with coefficients in a domain $\mathscr{O}$, we show that its pure specializations have the same conductor. More generally, we prove that the conductors of a collection of pure representations are equal if they lift to Weil-Deligne representations over domains containing $\mathscr{O}$ and the traces of these lifts are parametrized by a pseudorepresentation over $\mathscr{O}$.
We prove a unicity result for the $L$-functions appearing in the non-commutative Iwasawa main conjecture over totally real fields. We then consider continuous representations $ρ$ of the absolute Galois group of a totally real field $F$ on adic rings in the sense of Fukaya and Kato. Using our unicity result, we show that there exists a unique sensible definition of a non-commutative $L$-function for any such $ρ$ that factors through the Galois group of a possibly infinite totally real extension. We also consider the case of CM-extensions and discuss the relation with the equivariant main conjec…
Let $F$ be a locally compact non-archimedean field of residue characteristic $p$, $\textbf{G}$ a connected reductive group over $F$, and $R$ a field of characteristic $p$. When $R$ is algebraically closed, the irreducible admissible $R$-representations of $G=\textbf{G}(F)$ are classified in term of supersingular $R$-representations of the Levi subgroups of $G$ and parabolic induction; there is a similar classification for the simple modules of the pro-$p$ Iwahori Hecke $R$-algebra. In this paper, we show that both classifications hold true when $R$ is not algebraically closed.
We prove that certain Galois-isotypic parts of the completed cohomology group for U(2) can be written as a completed tensor product of a representation coming from the p-adic Langlands correspondence for $GL_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ and a representation arising via the local Langlands correspondence in famillies of Emerton and Helm.
For ψa nontrivial additive character on the finite field F_q, the map t \mapsto \sum_{x \in F_q} ψ(f(x)+tx) is the Fourier transform of the map t \mapsto ψ(f(t))$. As is well-known, this has a cohomological interpretation, producing a continuous ell-adic Galois representation. This paper studies the L-function attached to the k-th symmetric power of this representation using both ell-adic and p-adic methods. Using ell-adic techniques, we give an explicit formula for the degree of this L-function and determine the complex absolute values of its roots. Using p-adic techniques, we study the p-adi…
