We give new arguments that improve the known upper bounds on the maximal number N_q(g) of rational points of a curve of genus g over a finite field F_q for a number of pairs (q,g). Given a pair (q,g) and an integer N, we determine the possible zeta functions of genus-g curves over F_q with N points, and then deduce properties of the curves from their zeta functions. In many cases we can show that a genus-g curve over F_q with N points must have a low-degree map to another curve over F_q, and often this is enough to give us a contradiction. In particular, we able to provide eight previously unknown values of N_q(g), namely: N_4(5) = 17, N_4(10) = 27, N_8(9) = 45, N_{16}(4) = 45, N_{128}(4) = 215, N_3(6) = 14, N_9(10) = 54, and N_{27}(4) = 64. Our arguments also allow us to give a non-computer-intensive proof of the recent result of Savitt that there are no genus-4 curves over F_8 having exactly 27 rational points. Furthermore, we show that there is an infinite sequence of q's such that for every g with 0 < g < log_2 q, the difference between the Weil-Serre bound on N_q(g) and the actual value of N_q(g) is at least g/2.
We push further the classical proof of Weil upper bound for the number of rational points of an absolutely irreducible smooth projective curve $X$ over a finite field in term of euclidean relationships between the Neron Severi classes in $X\times X$ of the graphs of iterations of the Frobenius morphism. This allows us to recover Ihara's bound, which can be seen as a {\em second order} Weil upper bound, to establish a new {\em third order} Weil upper bound, and using {\tt magma} to produce numerical tables for {\em higher order} Weil upper bounds. We also give some interpretation for the defect…
Currently, the best upper bounds on the number of rational points on an absolutely irreducible, smooth, projective algebraic curve of genus g defined over a finite field F_q come either from Serre's refinement of the Weil bound if the genus is small compared to q, or from Oesterle's optimization of the explicit formulae method if the genus is large. This paper presents three methods for improving these bounds. The arguments used are the indecomposability of the theta divisor of a curve, Galois descent, and Honda-Tate theory. Examples of improvements on the bounds include lowering them for a wi…
Ellenberg and Gijswijt gave the best known asymptotic upper bound for the cardinality of subsets of $\mathbb F_q^n$ without 3-term arithmetic progressions. We improve this bound by a factor $\sqrt{n}$. In the case $q=3$, we also obtain more explicit upper bounds for the Cap Set Problem.
We establish new upper bounds for the height of the S-integral points of an elliptic curve. This bound is explicitly given in terms of the set S of places of the number field K involved, but also in terms of the degree of K, as well as the rank, the regulator and the height of a basis of the Mordell-Weil group of the curve. The proof uses the elliptic analogue of Baker's method, based on lower bounds for linear forms in elliptic logarithms.
In this paper I prove that for any prime $p$ there is a constant $C_p>0$ such that for any $n>0$ and for any $p$-power $q$ there is a smooth, projective, absolutely irreducible curve over $\mathbb{F}_q$ of genus $g\leq C_p q^n$ without points of degree smaller than $n$.
We show that for all finite fields F_q, there exists a curve C over F_q of genus 3 such that the number of rational points on C is within 3 of the Serre-Weil upper or lower bound. For some q, we also obtain improvements on the upper bound for the number of rational points on a genus 3 curve over F_q.
We present algorithms for computing the squared Weil and Tate pairings on elliptic curves and the squared Tate pairing for hyperelliptic curves. The squared pairings introduced in this paper have the advantage that our algorithms for evaluating them are deterministic and do not depend on a random choice of points. Our pairings save about 20-30% over the usual pairings.
One-point codes on the Hermitian curve produce long codes with excellent parameters. Feng and Rao introduced a modified construction that improves the parameters while still using one-point divisors. A separate improvement of the parameters was introduced by Matthews considering the classical construction but with two-point divisors. Those two approaches are combined to describe an elementary construction of two-point improved codes. Upon analysis of their minimum distance and redundancy, it is observed that they improve on the previous constructions for a large range of designed distances.
This paper improves the bound on $|S(T)|$. The main result is to show that $|S(T)|\leq 0.111\log T + 0.275\log\log T + 2.450$, which is valid for all $T\geq e$.
We present a probabilistic Las Vegas algorithm for computing the local zeta function of a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$. It is based on the approaches by Schoof and Pila combined with a modeling of the $\ell$-torsion by structured polynomial systems. Our main result improves on previously known complexity bounds by showing that there exists a constant $c>0$ such that, for any fixed $g$, this algorithm has expected time and space complexity $O((\log q)^{cg})$ as $q$ grows and the characteristic is large enough.
We present an algorithm which speeds scalar multiplication on a general elliptic curve by an estimated 3.8 % to 8.5 % over the best known general methods when using affine coordinates. This is achieved by eliminating a field multiplication when we compute 2P+Q from given points P, Q on the curve. We give applications to simultaneous multiple scalar multiplication and to the Elliptic Curve Method of factorization. We show how this improvement together with another idea can speed the computation of the Weil and Tate pairings by up to 7.8 %.
The Thue-Siegel method is used to obtain an upper bound for the number of primitive integral solutions to a family of quartic Thue's inequalities. This will provide an upper bound for the number of integer points on a family of elliptic curves with j-invariant equal to 1728.
In this paper, under GRH for elliptic $L$-functions, we give an upper bound for the probability for an elliptic curve with analytic rank $\leq a$ for $a \geq 11$, and also give an upper bound of $n$-th moments of analytic ranks of elliptic curves. These are applications of counting elliptic curves with local conditions, for example, having good reduction at $p$.
Given an elliptic curve $E$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ we study the finite extensions $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ of $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that the number of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-rational points on $E$ attains the Hasse upper bound. We obtain an upper bound on the degree $n$ for $E$ ordinary using an estimate for linear forms in logarithms, which allows us to compute the pairs of isogeny classes of such curves and degree $n$ for small $q$. Using a consequence of Schmidt's Subspace Theorem, we improve the upper bound to $n\leq 11$ for sufficiently large $q$. We also show that there are infinitely ma…
Let C be a curve of genus at least 2 imbedded in a product of elliptic curves. We give an explicit upper bound for the points in the intersection of C with the union of all algebraic subgroups of a certain codimension. As a corollary we obtain an explicit upper bound for the height of the rational points for some families of curves and an explicit version of the Manin-Dem'janenko method in products of elliptic curves
We say that a set is a multiplicative 3-Sidon set if the equation $s_1s_2s_3=t_1t_2t_3$ does not have a solution consisting of distinct elements taken from this set. In this paper we show that the size of a multiplicative 3-Sidon subset of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ is at most $π(n)+π(n/2)+n^{2/3}(\log n )^{2^{1/3}-1/3+o(1)}$, which improves the previously known best bound $π(n)+π(n/2)+cn^{2/3}\log n/\log\log n$.
We study the low-lying zeros of various interesting families of elliptic curve L-functions. One application is an upper bound on the average analytic rank of the family of all elliptic curves. The upper bound obtained is less than two, which implies that a positive proportion of elliptic curves over the rationals have algebraic rank equal to analytic rank and finite Tate-Shafarevich group. These results are conditional on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis.
We give a completely explicit upper bound for integral points on (standard) affine models of hyperelliptic curves, provided we know at least one rational point and a Mordell-Weil basis of the Jacobian. We also explain a powerful refinement of the Mordell--Weil sieve which, combined with the upper bound, is capable of determining all the integral points. Our method is illustrated by determining the integral points on a two genus 2 hyperelliptic curves with Mordell--Weil Jacobian ranks of 3 and 6.
A low storage algorithm for constructing isogenies between ordinary elliptic curves was proposed by Galbraith, Hess and Smart (GHS). We give an improvement of this algorithm by modifying the pseudorandom walk so that lower-degree isogenies are used more frequently. This is motivated by the fact that high degree isogenies are slower to compute than low degree ones. We analyse the running time of the parallel collision search algorithm when the partitioning is uneven. We also give experimental results. We conclude that our algorithm is around 14 times faster than the GHS algorithm when construct…
