We consider ensembles of random polynomials of the form $p(z)=\sum_{j = 1}^N a_j P_j$ where $\{a_j\}$ are independent complex normal random variables and where $\{P_j\}$ are the orthonormal polynomials on the boundary of a bounded simply connected analytic plane domain $Ω\subset C$ relative to an analytic weight $ρ(z) |dz|$. In the simplest case where $Ω$ is the unit disk and $ρ=1$, so that $P_j(z) = z^j$, it is known that the average distribution of zeros is the uniform measure on $S^1$. We show that for any analytic $(Ω, ρ)$, the zeros of random polynomials almost surely become equidistributed relative to the equilibrium measure on $\partialΩ$ as $N\to\infty$. We further show that on the length scale of 1/N, the correlations have a universal scaling limit independent of $(Ω, ρ)$.
Various convergence results for the Bergman kernel of the Hilbert space of all polynomials in \C^{n} of total degree at most k, equipped with a weighted norm, are obtained. The weight function is assumed to be C^{1,1}, i.e. it is differentiable and all of its first partial derivatives are locally Lipshitz continuous. The convergence is studied in the large k limit and is expressed in terms of the global equilibrium potential associated to the weight function, as well as in terms of the Monge-Ampere measure of the weight function itself on a certain set. A setting of polynomials associated to a…
Zeros of many ensembles of polynomials with random coefficients are asymptotically equidistributed near the unit circumference. We give quantitative estimates for such equidistribution in terms of the expected discrepancy and expected number of roots in various sets. This is done for polynomials with coefficients that may be dependent, and need not have identical distributions. We also study random polynomials spanned by various deterministic bases.
Li and Wei (2009) studied the density of zeros of Gaussian harmonic polynomials with independent Gaussian coefficients. They derived a formula for the expected number of zeros of random harmonic polynomials as well as asymptotics for the case that the polynomials are drawn from the Kostlan ensemble. In this paper we extend their work to cover the case that the polynomials are drawn from the Weyl ensemble by deriving asymptotics for this class of harmonic polynomials.
We study the supremum of some random Dirichlet polynomials and obtain sharp upper and lower bounds for supremum expectation that extend the optimal estimate of Halász-Queffélec and enable to cunstruct random polynomials with unusually small maxima. Our approach in proving these results is entirely based on methods of stochastic processes, in particular the metric entropy method.
The purpose of this note is to study asymptotic zero distribution of multivariate random polynomials as their degrees grow. For a smooth weight function with super logarithmic growth at infinity, we consider random linear combinations of associated orthogonal polynomials with subgaussian coefficients. This class of probability distributions contains a wide range of random variables including standard Gaussian and all bounded random variables. We prove that for almost every sequence of random polynomials their normalized zero currents become equidistributed with respect to a deterministic extre…
We give abstract versions of the large deviation theorem for the distribution of zeros of polynomials and apply them to the characteristic polynomials of Hermitian random matrices. We obtain new estimates related to the local semi-circular law for the empirical spectral distribution of these matrices when the 4th moments of their entries are controlled.
The existence of the limit distribution of the zeros of Hermite-Padé polynomials of type II for a pair of functions forming a Nikishin system is proved using the scalar equilibrium problem posed on the two-sheeted Riemann surface. The relation of the results obtained here to some results of H. Stahl (1988) is discussed. Results of numerical experiments are presented. The results of the present paper and those obtained in the earlier paper of the second author [28], [32], [33] are shown to be in good accordance with both H. Stahl's results and with results of numerical experiments.
A complex harmonic polynomial is the sum of a complex polynomial and a conjugated complex polynomial, of degrees $n$ and $m$ respectively. Li and Wei (2009) presented a formula for the expected number of zeros of a random harmonic polynomial in $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper we prove that if $m$ is a fixed number, this expectation is asymptotically $n$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$, and if $m=n$ we find a lower and upper bound of order $n\log n$ for this expectation for sufficiently large $n$.
In this work, we study asymptotic zero distribution of random multi-variable polynomials which are random linear combinations $\sum_{j}a_jP_j(z)$ with i.i.d coefficients relative to a basis of orthonormal polynomials $\{P_j\}_j$ induced by a multi-circular weight function $Q$ satisfying suitable smoothness and growth conditions. In complex dimension $m\geq3$, we prove that $\Bbb{E}[(\log(1+|a_j|))^m]<\infty$ is a necessary and sufficient condition for normalized zero currents of random polynomials to be almost surely asymptotic to the (deterministic) extremal current $dd^cV_{Q}.$ In addition, …
In this paper we deduce a universal result about the asymptotic distribution of roots of random polynomials, which can be seen as a complement to an old and famous result of Erdos and Turan. More precisely, given a sequence of random polynomials, we show that, under some very general conditions, the roots tend to cluster near the unit circle, and their angles are uniformly distributed. The method we use is deterministic: in particular, we do not assume independence or equidistribution of the coefficients of the polynomial.
We show that if a real trigonometric polynomial has few real roots, then the trigonometric polynomial obtained by writing the coefficients in reverse order must have many real roots. This is used to show that a class of random trigonometric polynomials has, on average, many real roots. In the case that the coefficients of a real trigonometric polynomial are independently and identically distributed, but with no other assumptions on the distribution, the expected fraction of real zeros is at least one-half. This result is best possible.
We study the asymptotic distribution of zeros for the random polynomials $P_n(z) = \sum_{k=0}^n A_k B_k(z)$, where $\{A_k\}_{k=0}^{\infty}$ are non-trivial i.i.d. complex random variables. Polynomials $\{B_k\}_{k=0}^{\infty}$ are deterministic, and are selected from a standard basis such as Szegő, Bergman, or Faber polynomials associated with a Jordan domain $G$ bounded by an analytic curve. We show that the zero counting measures of $P_n$ converge almost surely to the equilibrium measure on the boundary of $G$ if and only if $\mathbb{E}[\log^+|A_0|]<\infty$.
In this note, we prove a central limit theorem for smooth linear statistics of zeros of random polynomials which are linear combinations of orthogonal polynomials with iid standard complex Gaussian coefficients. Along the way, we obtain Bergman kernel asymptotics for weighted $L^2$-space of polynomials endowed with varying measures of the form $e^{-2nφ_n(z)}dz$ under suitable assumptions on the weight functions $φ_n$.
We show that with high probability the number of real zeroes of a random polynomial is bounded by the number of vertices on its Newton-Hadamard polygon times the cube of the logarithm of the polynomial degree. A similar estimate holds for zeroes lying on any curve in the complex plane, which is the graph of a Lipschitz function in polar coordinates. The proof is based on the classical Turán lemma.
We seek random versions of some classical theorems on complex approximation by polynomials and rational functions, as well as investigate properties of random compact sets in connection to complex approximation.
We study the expected number of real zeros for random linear combinations of orthogonal polynomials. It is well known that Kac polynomials, spanned by monomials with i.i.d. Gaussian coefficients, have only $(2/π+ o(1))\log{n}$ expected real zeros in terms of the degree $n$. On the other hand, if the basis is given by orthonormal polynomials associated to a finite Borel measure with compact support on the real line, then random linear combinations have $n/\sqrt{3} + o(n)$ expected real zeros under mild conditions. We prove that the latter asymptotic relation holds for all random orthogonal poly…
We study asymptotic zero distribution of random Laurent polynomials whose support are contained in dilates of a fixed integral polytope $P$ as their degree grow. We consider a large class of probability distributions including the ones induced from i.i.d. random coefficients whose distribution law has bounded density with logarithmically decaying tails as well as moderate measures defined over the projectivized space of Laurent polynomials. We obtain a quantitative localized version of Bernstein-Kouchnirenko Theorem.
We investigate random compact sets with random functions defined thereon, such as polynomials, rational functions, the pluricomplex Green function and the Siciak extremal function. One surprising consequence of our study is that randomness can be used to `improve' convergence for sequences of functions.
This work concerns superharmonic perturbations of a Gaussian measure given by a special class of positive weights in the complex plane of the form $w(z) = \exp(-|z|^2 + U^μ(z))$, where $U^μ(z)$ is the logarithmic potential of a compactly supported positive measure $μ$. The equilibrium measure of the corresponding weighted energy problem is shown to be supported on subharmonic generalized quadrature domains for a large class of perturbing potentials $U^μ(z)$. It is also shown that the $2\times 2$ matrix d-bar problem for orthogonal polynomials with respect to such weights is well-defined and ha…

In this paper equilibrium measures in the presence of external fields created by fixed charges are analyzed. These external fields are a particular case of the so-called rational external fields (in the sense that their derivatives are rational functions). Along with some general results, a thorough analysis of the particular case of two fixed negative charges (``attractors') is presented. As for the main tools used, this paper is a natural continuation of \cite{MOR2015}, where polynomial external fields were thoroughly studied, and \cite{OrSL2015}, where rational external fields with a polyno…
We study asymptotic clustering of zeros of random polynomials, and show that the expected discrepancy of roots of a polynomial of degree $n$, with not necessarily independent coefficients, decays like $\sqrt{\log n/n}$. Our proofs rely on discrepancy results for deterministic polynomials, and order statistics of a random variable. We also consider the expected number of zeros lying in certain subsets of the plane, such as circles centered on the unit circumference, and polygons inscribed in the unit circumference.
In analogy to the equidistribution of preimages of a prescribed point by the iterates of a polynomial map in the complex plane towards the equilibrium measure, we show here the equidistribution of points for which the derivative of the n-th iterate of the polynomial takes a suitable prescribed value towards the equilibrium measure. We then give a similar statement in the space of degree d polynomials for the equidistribution of parameters for which the n-derivative at a given critical value has a prescribed derivative towards the activity current of the corresponding critical point.
We show that for Gaussian random SU(2)polynomials of a large degree $N$ the probability that there are no zeros in the disk of radius $r$ is less than $e^{-c_{1,r} N^2}$, and is also greater than $e^{-c_{2,r} N^2}$. Enroute to this result, we also derive a more general result: probability estimates for the event that the number of complex zeros of a random polynomial of high degree deviates significantly from its mean.
The Baran metric $δ_E$ is a Finsler metric on the interior of $E\subset \R^n$ arising from Pluripotential Theory. We consider the few instances, namely $E$ being the ball, the simplex, or the sphere, where $δ_E$ is known to be Riemaniann and we prove that the eigenfunctions of the associated Laplace Beltrami operator (with no boundary conditions) are the orthogonal polynomials with respect to the pluripotential equilibrium measure $μ_E$ of $E.$ We conjecture that this may hold in a wider generality. The considered differential operators have been already introduced in the framework of orthogon…
We utilize Cauchy's argument principle in combination with the Jacobian of a holomorphic function in several complex variables and the first moment of a ratio of two correlated complex normal random variables to prove explicit formulas for the density and the mean distribution of complex zeros of random polynomials spanned by orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and on the unit disk. We then inquire into the consequences of their asymptotical evaluations.
We study the density of complex critical points of a real random SO(m+1) polynomial in m variables. In a previous paper [Mac09], the author used the Poincare- Lelong formula to show that the density of complex zeros of a system of these real random polynomials rapidly approaches the density of complex zeros of a system of the corresponding complex random polynomials, the SU(m+1) polynomials. In this paper, we use the Kac- Rice formula to prove an analogous result: the density of complex critical points of one of these real random polynomials rapidly approaches the density of complex critical p…
We study the asymptotic zero distribution of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with two Macdonald functions (modified Bessel functions of the second kind). Based on the four-term recurrence relation, it is shown that, after proper scaling, the sequence of normalized zero counting measures converges weakly to the first component of a vector of two measures which satisfies a vector equilibrium problem with two external fields. We also give the explicit formula for the equilibrium vector in terms of solutions of an algebraic equation.
