We show that the method of moving quadrics for implicitizing surfaces in P^3 applies in certain cases where base points are present. However, if the ideal defined by the parametrization is saturated, then this method rarely applies. Instead, we show that when the base points are a local complete intersection, the implicit equation can be computed as the resultant of the first syzygies.
We derive the implicit equations for certain parametric surfaces in three-dimensional projective space termed tensor product surfaces. Our method computes the implicit equation for such a surface based on the knowledge of the syzygies of the base point locus of the parametrization by means of constructing an explicit virtual projective resolution.
We show that the implicit equation of a surface in 3-dimensional projective space parametrized by bi-homogeneous polynomials of bi-degree (d,d), for a given positive integer d, can be represented and computed from the linear syzygies of its parametrization if the base points are isolated and form locally a complete intersection.
Chen, Sederberg, and Zheng introduced the notion of a $μ$-basis for a rational ruled surface in Chen et al. (2001) and showed that its resultant is the implicit equation of the surface, if the parametrization is generically injective. We generalize this result to the case of an arbitrary parametrization. We also give a new proof for the corresponding theorem in the curve case and treat the reparametrization problem for curves and ruled surfaces.
A parameterized surface can be represented as a projection from a certain toric surface. This generalizes the classical homogeneous and bihomogeneous parameterizations. We extend to the toric case two methods for computing the implicit equation of such a rational parameterized surface. The first approach uses resultant matrices and gives an exact determinantal formula for the implicit equation if the parameterization has no base points. In the case the base points are isolated local complete intersections, we show that the implicit equation can still be recovered by computing any non-zero maxi…
In this paper we further develop the theory of geometric tropicalization due to Hacking, Keel and Tevelev and we describe tropical methods for implicitization of surfaces. More precisely, we enrich this theory with a combinatorial formula for tropical multiplicities of regular points in arbitrary dimension and we prove a conjecture of Sturmfels and Tevelev regarding sufficient combinatorial conditions to compute tropical varieties via geometric tropicalization. Using these two results, we extend previous work of Sturmfels, Tevelev and Yu for tropical implicitization of generic surfaces, and we…
Given a $4$-dimensional vector subspace $U=\{ f_{0},\ldots,f_{3}\}$ of $H^{0}(\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1,\mathcal{O}(a,b))$, a tensor product surface, denoted by $X_{U}$, is the closure of the image of the rational map $λ_{U}:\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1 -\!\to \mathbb{P}^{3}$ determined by $U$. These surfaces arise in geometric modeling and in this context it is useful to know the implicit equation of $X_{U}$ in $\mathbb{P}^{3}$. In this paper we show that if $U\subseteq H^{0}(\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1,\mathcal{O}(a,1))$ has a finite set of $r$ basepoints in generic position,…
Recently, a method to compute the implicit equation of a parametrized hypersurface has been developed by the authors. We address here some questions related to this method. First, we prove that the degree estimate for the stabilization of the MacRae's invariant of a graded part of the symmetric algebra is optimal. Then we show that the extraneous factor that may appear in the process splits into a product a linear forms in the algebraic closure of the base field, each linear form being associated to a non complete intersection base point. Finally, we make a link between this method and a resul…
Based on the computation of a superset of the implicit support, implicitization of a parametrically given hyper-surface is reduced to computing the nullspace of a numeric matrix. Our approach exploits the sparseness of the given parametric equations and of the implicit polynomial. In this work, we study how this interpolation matrix can be used to reduce some key geometric predicates on the hyper-surface to simple numerical operations on the matrix, namely membership and sidedness for given query points. We illustrate our results with examples based on our Maple implementation.
In this paper, we investigate some topics around the closed image $S$ of a rational map $λ$ given by some homogeneous elements $f_1,...,f_n$ of the same degree in a graded algebra $A$. We first compute the degree of this closed image in case $λ$ is generically finite and $f_1,...,f_n$ define isolated base points in $\Proj(A)$. We then relate the definition ideal of $S$ to the symmetric and the Rees algebras of the ideal $I=(f_1,...,f_n) \subset A$, and prove some new acyclicity criteria for the associated approximation complexes. Finally, we use these results to obtain the implicit equation of…
We introduce the notion of monomial group action and study some of its consequences for Groebner basis theory. As an application we prove a conjecture of V. Batyrev and O. Popov describing the Cox rings of Del Pezzo surfaces (of degree at least 3) as quotients of a polynomial ring by an ideal generated by quadrics.
In this paper, we present an algorithm for reparametrizing birational surface parametrizations into birational polynomial surface parametrizations without base points, if they exist. For this purpose, we impose a transversality condition to the base points of the input parametrization.
P. Stiller computed the Picard numbers of several families of elliptic surfaces, the rank of the Néron-Severi groups of these surfaces. However he did not give the generators of these groups. In this paper we give $\mathbb Q$-bases of these groups explicitly. If these surfaces are rational, then we also show that they are $\mathbb Z$-bases.
This paper shows that the multiplicity of the base points locus of a projective rational surface parametrization can be expressed as the degree of the content of a univariate resultant. As a consequence, we get a new proof of the degree formula relating the degree of the surface, the degree of the parametrization, the base points multiplicity, and the degree of the rational map induced by the parametrization. In addition, we extend both formulas to the case of dominant rational maps of the projective plane and describe how the base point loci of a parametrization and its reparametrizations are…
We give the new effective criterion for the global generation of the adjoint bundle on normal surfaces with a boundary. We could make the invariant δsmall a bit more on log-terminal singular point, and then we could prove the theorem described in my previous paper "alg-geom/9612018" as a corollary.
We give an algorithm that, for a given value of the geometric genus $p_g,$ computes all regular product-quotient surfaces with abelian group that have at most canonical singularities and have canonical system with at most isolated base points. We use it to show that there are exactly two families of such surfaces with canonical map of degree $32$. We also construct a surface with $q=1$ and canonical map of degree $24$. These are regular surfaces with $p_g=3$ and base point free canonical system. We discuss the case of regular surfaces with $p_g=4$ and base point free canonical system.
This note studies the structure of the divisorial fixed part of the dualizing sheaf of a 1-connected curve D on a smooth surface S. It is shown that if the divisorial fixed part F of the dualizing sheaf is non empty then it has arithmetic genus<1 and each component of F is a smooth rational curve.
We give explicit constructions of all the numerical Campedelli surfaces, i.e the minimal surfaces of general type with K^2=2 and p_g=0, whose fundamental group has order 9. There are three families, one with fundamental group equal to Z_9 and two with fundamental group equal to Z_3^2. We also determine the base locus of the bicanonical system of these surfaces. It turns out that for the surfaces with fundamental group equal to Z_9 and for one of the families of surfaces with fundamental group equal to Z_3^2 the base locus consists of two points. To our knowlegde, these are the only known examp…
In this paper we study a local structure of extrmal contractions $f\colon X\to S$ from threffolds $X$ with only terminal singularities onto a surface $S$. If the surface $S$ is non-singular and $X$ has a unique non-Gorenstein point on a fiber we prove that either the linear system $|-K_X|$, $|-2K_X|$ or $|-3K_X|$ contains a "good" divisor.
This treats the base-point-freeness of the adjoint bundles on normal surfaces with a boundary. This is an extension of the non-relative version of the theorem of Ein-Lazarsfeld-Masek and the theorem of Kawachi-Masek.
To each connected component in the space of semisimple representations from the orbifold fundamental group of the base orbifold of a Seifert fibered homology 3-sphere into the Lie group U(2,1), we associate a real number called the "orbifold Toledo invariant." For each such orbifold, there exists an elliptic surface over it, called a Dolgachev surface. Using the theory of Higgs bundles on these Dolgachev surfaces, we explicitly compute all values taken on by the orbifold Toledo invariant.
We study rationality properties of quadric surface bundles over the projective plane. We exhibit families of smooth projective complex fourfolds of this type over connected bases, containing both rational and non-rational fibers.
The paper consists of three parts. In the first of them different kinds stability are discussed. In particular, the stability concept with respect to nef divisor is introduced. A structure of rigid and superrigid vector bundles on smooth projective surfaces with nef anticanonical class is studied in the second part. We prove that any superrigid bundle has a unique exceptional filtration. In the last part we give constructive description of exceptional bundles on these surfaces.
For Châtelet surfaces defined over number fields, we study two arithmetic properties, the Hasse principle and weak approximation, when passing to an extension of the base field. Generalizing a construction of Y. Liang, we show that for an arbitrary extension of number fields $L/K,$ there is a Châtelet surface over $K$ which does not satisfy weak approximation over any intermediate field of $L/K,$ and a Châtelet surface over $K$ which satisfies the Hasse principle over an intermediate field $L'$ if and only if $[L' : K]$ is even.
