In this paper, we present an algorithm for reparametrizing birational surface parametrizations into birational polynomial surface parametrizations without base points, if they exist. For this purpose, we impose a transversality condition to the base points of the input parametrization.
In this paper we show that not all affine rational complex surfaces can be parametrized birationally and surjectively. For this purpose, we prove that, if S is an affine complex surface whose projective closure is smooth, a necessary condition for S to admit a birational surjective parametrization from an open subset of the affine complex plane is that the infinity curve of S must contain at least one rational component. As a consequence of this result we provide examples of affine rational surfaces that do not admit birational surjective parametrizations.
Given a unirational parameterization of a surface, we present a general algorithm to determine a birational parameterization without using parameterization algorithms. Additionally, if the surface is assumed to have a birational parametrization with empty base locus, and the input parametrization is transversal, the degree of the solution is determined in advance and the dimension of the space of solutions is reduced. As a consequence, for these cases, we present a second faster algorithm.
Smooth real cubic surfaces are birationally trivial (over $\R$) if and only if their real locus is connected or, equivalently, if and only if they have two skew real lines or two skew complex conjugate lines. In such a case a parametrization over the reals can be given by cubic polynomials. In this short note we provide a simple geometric method to obtain such parametrization based in an algorithm by I. Polo-Blanco and J. Top \cite{Po-Top}.
Let $k$ be an arbitrary field, and C be a curve in A^n defined parametrically by x_1=f_1(t),...,x_n=f_n(t), where f_1,...,f_n\in k[t]. A necessary and sufficient condition for the two function fields k(t) and k(f_1,...,f_n) to be same is developed in terms of zero-dimensionality of a derived ideal in the bivariate polynomial ring k[s,t]. Since zero-dimensionality of such an ideal can be readily determined by a Groebner basis computation, this gives an algorithm that determines if the parametrization ψ=(f_1,...,f_n): A --> C is a birational equivalence. We also develop an algorithm that determi…
In this paper we present three related results on the subject of fields of parametrization. Let C be a rational curve over a field of characteristic zero. Let K be a field finitely generated over Q, such that it is a field of definition of C but not a field of parametrization. It is known that there are quadratic extensions of K that parametrize C. First, we prove that there are infinitely many quadratic extensions of K that are fields of parametrization of C. As a consequence, we prove that the witness variety, that appear in the context of the parametric Weil's descente method, is always a s…
We study birational transformations P^n--->S \subseteq P^N defined by linear systems of quadrics whose base locus is smooth and irreducible of dimension \leq3 and whose image S is sufficiently regular.
We study transformations as in the title with emphasis on those having smooth connected base locus, called "special". In particular, we classify all special quadratic birational maps into a quadric hypersurface whose inverse is given by quadratic forms by showing that there are only four examples having general hyperplane sections of Severi varieties as base loci.
We develop the quadratic technique of proving birational rigidity of Fano-Mori fibre spaces over a higher-dimensional base. As an application, we prove birational rigidity of generic fibrations into Fano double spaces of dimension $M\geqslant 4$ and index one over a rationally connected base of dimension at most $\frac12 (M-2)(M-1)$. An estimate for the codimension of the subset of hypersurfaces of a given degree in the projective space with a positive-dimensional singular set is obtained, which is close to the optimal one.
We extend our classification of special Cremona transformations whose base locus has dimension at most three to the case when the target space is replaced by a (locally) factorial complete intersection.
Let ϕ: \mathbb{P}^{r}\dashrightarrow Z be a birational transformation with a smooth connected base locus scheme, where Z\subseteq\mathbb{P}^{r+c} is a nondegenerate prime Fano manifold. We call ϕa quadro-quadric special briational transformation if ϕand ϕ^{-1} are defined by linear subsystems of |\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{r}}(2)| and |\mathcal{O}_{Z}(2)| respectively. In this paper we classify quadro-quadric special birational transformations in the cases where either (i) Z is a complete intersection and the base locus scheme of ϕ^{-1} is smooth, or (ii) Z is a hypersurface.
We prove that a finite group acting by birational automorphisms of a non-trivial Severi-Brauer surface over a field of characteristic zero contains a normal abelian subgroup of index at most 3. Also, we find an explicit bound for orders of such finite groups in the case when the base field contains all roots of 1.
It is proved that the group of birational automorphisms of a three-dimensional double quadric with a singular point arising from a double point on the branch divisor is a semidirect product of the free group generated by birational involutions of a special form and the group of regular automorphisms. The proof is based on the method of `untwisting' maximal singularities of linear systems.
We consider two varieties associated to a web of quadrics W in the projective space of dimension 7. One is the base locus and the second one is the double cover of the three dimensional projective space branched along the determinant surface of W. We show that small resolutions of these varieties are Calabi-Yau manifolds. We compute their Betti numbers and show that they are not birational in the generic case. The main result states that if the base locus of W contains a plane then in the generic case the two varieties are birational.
We prove the birational rigidity of Fano complete intersections of index 1 with a singular point of high multiplicity, which can be close to the degree of the variety. In particular, the groups of birational and biregular automorphisms of these varieties are equal, and they are non-rational. The proof is based on the techniques of the method of maximal singularities, the generalized $4n^2$-inequality for complete intersection singularities and the technique of hypertangent divisors.
A birational map from a projective space onto a not too much singular projective variety with a single irreducible non-singular base locus scheme (special birational transformation) is a rare enough phenomenon to allow meaningful and concise classification results. We shall concentrate on transformations defined by quadratic equations onto some varieties (especially projective hypersurfaces of small degree), where quite surprisingly the base loci are interesting projective manifolds appearing in other contexts; for example, exceptions for adjunction theory, small degree or small codimensional …
We study the birational geometry of Hilbert schemes of points on non-minimal surfaces. In particular, we study the weak Lefschetz Principle in the context of birational geometry. We focus on the interaction of the stable base locus decomposition (SBLD) of the cones of effective divisors of $X^{[n]}$ and $Y^{[n]}$, when there is a birational morphism $f:X\rightarrow Y$ between surfaces. In this setting, $N^1(Y^{[n]})$ embeds in $N^1(X^{[n]})$, and we ask if the restriction of the stable base locus decomposition of $N^1(X^{[n]})$ yields the respective decomposition in $N^1(Y^{[n]})$ $i.e.$, if t…
This paper shows that the multiplicity of the base points locus of a projective rational surface parametrization can be expressed as the degree of the content of a univariate resultant. As a consequence, we get a new proof of the degree formula relating the degree of the surface, the degree of the parametrization, the base points multiplicity, and the degree of the rational map induced by the parametrization. In addition, we extend both formulas to the case of dominant rational maps of the projective plane and describe how the base point loci of a parametrization and its reparametrizations are…
Let X be a projective 3-fold with at most Q-factorial terminal singularities on which K_X is nef and big. Suppose the canonical index r(X)>1. For any positive integer m, it is interesting to consider the base point freeness and birationality of the divisor mK_X. For example, we know the following results: (1) the system |5rK_X| is base point free (Ein-Lazarsfeld-Lee); (2) |mK_X| gives a birational map for all m>4r+2 (M. Hanamura). This article aims to present a better result in direction (2). As far as our method can tell here, |mK_X| gives a birational map for all m>2r+5. (Q-divisor method + …
We show, using [14], that a smooth projective fibration f : X $\rightarrow$ Y between connected complex quasi-projective manifolds satisfies the equality $κ$(X) = $κ$(X y) + $κ$(Y) of Logarithmic Kodaira dimensions if its fibres X y admit a good minimal model. Without the last assumption, this was conjectured in [11]. Several cases are established in [13], which inspired the present text. Although the present results overlap with those of [13] in the projective case, the approach here is different, based on the r{ô}le played by birationally isotrivial fibrations, special manifolds and the core…
It is proved that on a smooth algebraic variety, fibered into cubic surfaces over the projective line and sufficiently ``twisted'' over the base, there is only one pencil of rational surfaces -- that is, this very pencil of cubics. In particular, this variety is non-rational; moreover, it can not be fibered into rational curves. The proof is obtained by means of the method of maximal singularities.
We present a new approach to construct $T$-equivariant flat toric degenerations of flag varieties and spherical varieties, combining ideas coming from the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies with ideas originally stemming from PBW-filtrations. For each pair $(S,>)$ consisting of a birational sequence and a monomial order, we attach to the affine variety $G/\hskip -3.5pt/U$ a monoid $Γ=Γ(S,>)$. As a side effect we get a vector space basis $\mathbb B_Γ$ of $\mathbb C[G/\hskip -3.5pt/U]$, the elements being indexed by $Γ$. The basis $\mathbb B_Γ$ has multiplicative properties very similar to those o…
We study the birational geometry of deformations of Hilbert schemes of points on the projective plane P2. We complete the picture in the paper of Daniele Arcara, Aaron Bertram, Izzet Coskun and Jack Huizenga by giving an explicit correspondence between the stable base locus walls on the Neron-Severi space and the actual walls on the Bridgeland stability space. We show that the birational geometry of a deformed Hilb P2 is different from that of Hilb P2.
A tri-linear rational map in dimension three is a rational map $ϕ: (\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{C}^1)^3 \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_\mathbb{C}^3$ defined by four tri-linear polynomials without a common factor. If $ϕ$ admits an inverse rational map $ϕ^{-1}$, it is a tri-linear birational map. In this paper, we address computational and geometric aspects about these transformations. We give a characterization of birationality based on the first syzygies of the entries. More generally, we describe all the possible minimal graded free resolutions of the ideal generated by these entries. With respect to geom…
In this paper we study birational immersions from a very general smooth plane curve to a non-rational surface with $p_g=q=0$ to treat dominant rational maps from a very general surface $X$ of degree$\geq 5$ in ${\mathbb P}^3$ to smooth projective surfaces $Y$. Based on the classification theory of algebraic surfaces, Hodge theory, and deformation theory, we prove that there is no dominant rational map from $X$ to $Y$ unless $Y$ is rational or $Y$ is birational to $X$.
We develop in this article an algorithm that, given a projective curve $C$, computes a \textit{gonal map}, that is, a finite morphism from $C$ to the projective line of minimal degree. Our method is based on the computation of scrollar syzygies of canonical curves. We develop an improved version of our algorithm for curves with a unique gonal map and we discuss a characterization of such curves in terms of Betti numbers. Finally, we derive an efficient algorithm for radical parametrization of curves of gonality $\le 4$.
In this paper we address the problem of computing $\text{deg}(f^n)$, the degrees of iterates of a birational map $f:\mathbb{P}^N\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^N$. For this goal, we develop a method based on two main ingredients: the factorization of a polynomial under pull-back of $f$, based on local indices of a polynomial associated to blow-ups used to resolve the contraction of hypersurfaces by $f$, and the propagation of these indices along orbits of $f$. For maps admitting algebraically stable modifications $f_X:X\rightarrow X$, where $X$ is a variety obtained from $\mathbb P^N$ by a finite number…
We study birational maps with empty base locus defined by almost complete intersection ideals. Birationality is shown to be expressed by the equality of two Chern numbers. We provide a relatively effective method of their calculation in terms of certain Hilbert coefficients. In dimension two the structure of the irreducible ideals leads naturally to the calculation of Sylvester determinants via a computer-assisted method. For degree at most 5 we produce the full set of defining equations of the base ideal. The results answer affirmatively some questions raised by D. Cox.
In this paper we show that a surface in P^3 parametrized over a 2-dimensional toric variety T can be represented by a matrix of linear syzygies if the base points are finite in number and form locally a complete intersection. This constitutes a direct generalization of the corresponding result over P^2 established in [BJ03] and [BC05]. Exploiting the sparse structure of the parametrization, we obtain significantly smaller matrices than in the homogeneous case and the method becomes applicable to parametrizations for which it previously failed. We also treat the important case T = P^1 x P^1 in …
We establish the relation of the potential function constructed by Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich's and Berenstein-Kazhdan's decoration function on the open double Bruhat cell in the base affine space $G/\mathcal{N}$ of a simple, simply connected, simply laced algebraic group $G$. As a byproduct we derive explicit identifications of polyhedral parametrization of canonical bases of the ring of regular functions on $G/\mathcal{N}$ arising from the tropicalizations of the potential and decoration function with the classical string and Lusztig parametrizations.
In this paper we present an algorithm for computing a matrix representation for a surface in P^3 parametrized over a 2-dimensional toric variety T. This algorithm follows the ideas of [Botbol-Dickenstein-Dohm-09] and it was implemented in Macaulay2. We showed in [BDD09] that such a surface can be represented by a matrix of linear syzygies if the base points are finite in number and form locally a complete intersection, and in [Botbol-09] we generalized this to the case where the base locus is not necessarily a local complete intersection. The key point consists in exploiting the sparse structu…
We show that the implicit equation of a surface in 3-dimensional projective space parametrized by bi-homogeneous polynomials of bi-degree (d,d), for a given positive integer d, can be represented and computed from the linear syzygies of its parametrization if the base points are isolated and form locally a complete intersection.
In the present paper and the companion paper [8] a probabilistic (statistical mechanical) approach to the study of canonical metrics and measures on a complex algebraic variety X is introduced. On any such variety with positive Kodaira dimension a canonical (birationally invariant) random point processes is defined and shown to converge in probability towards a canonical deterministic measure on X, coinciding with the canonical measure of Song-Tian and Tsuji. The proof is based on new large deviation principle for Gibbs measures with singular Hamiltonians which relies on an asymptotic submean …
