Let M be a Riemannian manifold and R its curvature tensor. For a unit vector X tangent to M at a point p, the Jacobi operator is defined by R_X = R(X, .) X$. The manifold M is called pointwise Osserman if, for every point p, the spectrum of the Jacobi operator does not depend of the choice of X, and is called globally Osserman if it depends neither of X, nor of p. R.Osserman conjectured that globally Osserman manifolds are two-point homogeneous. We prove the Osserman Conjecture for dimension n \ne 8, 16, and its pointwise version for n \ne 2,4,8,16. Partial results in the cases n = 8, 16 are also given.
A Riemannian manifold is called Osserman (conformally Osserman, respectively), if the eigenvalues of the Jacobi operator of its curvature tensor (Weyl tensor, respectively) are constant on the unit tangent sphere at every point. Osserman Conjecture asserts that every Osserman manifold is either flat or rank-one symmetric. We prove that both the Osserman Conjecture and its conformal version, the Conformal Osserman Conjecture, are true, modulo a certain assumption on algebraic curvature tensors in $\mathbb{R}^16$. As a consequence, we show that a Riemannian manifold having the same Weyl tensor a…
For a Riemannian manifold $M^n$ with the curvature tensor $R$, the Jacobi operator $R_X$ is defined by $R_XY = R(X,Y)X$. The manifold $M^n$ is called {\it pointwise Osserman} if, for every $p \in M^n$, the eigenvalues of the Jacobi operator $R_X$ do not depend of a unit vector $X \in T_pM^n$, and is called {\it globally Osserman} if they do not depend of the point $p$ either. R. Osserman conjectured that globally Osserman manifolds are flat or rank-one symmetric. This Conjecture is true for manifolds of dimension $n \ne 8, 16$. Here we prove the Osserman Conjecture and its pointwise version fo…
We show that 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds which satisfy the Rakić duality principle are Osserman (i.e. the eigenvalues of the Jacobi operator are constant), thus both conditions are equivalent.
Let H be a 4 dimensional almost Hermitian manifold which satisfies the Kaehler identity. Then H is complex Osserman if and only if H has constant holomorphic sectional curvature. We also classify in arbitrary dimensions all the complex Osserman Kaehler manifolds which do not have 3 eigenvalues.
We exhibit Osserman metrics with non-nilpotent Jacobi operators and with non-trivial Jordan normal form in neutral signature (n,n) for any n which is at least 3. These examples admit a natural almost para-Hermitian structure and are semi para-complex Osserman with non-trivial Jordan normal form as well; they neither satisfy the third Gray identity nor are they integrable.
An algebraic curvature tensor is called Osserman if the eigenvalues of the associated Jacobi operator are constant on the unit sphere. A Riemannian manifold is called conformally Osserman if its Weyl conformal curvature tensor at every point is Osserman. We prove that a conformally Osserman manifold of dimension $n \ne 3, 4, 16$ is locally conformally equivalent either to a Euclidean space or to a rank-one symmetric space.
It is shown that if a compact four-dimensional manifold with metric of neutral signature is Jordan-Osserman, then it is either of constant sectional curvature or Ricci flat.
By considering the projectivized spectrum of the Jacobi operator, we introduce the concept of projective Osserman manifold in both the affine and in the pseudo-Riemannian settings. If M is an affine projective Osserman manifold, then the modified Riemannian extension metric on the cotangent bundle is both spacelike and timelike projective Osserman. Since any rank 1 symmetric space is affine projective Osserman, this provides additional information concerning the cotangent bundle of a rank 1 Riemannian symmetric space with the modified Riemannian extension metric. We construct other examples of…
A curvature model (V,A) is a real vector space V which is equipped with a "curvature operator" A(x,y)z that A has the same symmetries as an affine curvature operator; A(x,y)z=-A(y,x)z and A(x,y)z+A(y,z)x+A(z,x)y=0. Such a model is called projective affine Osserman if the spectrum of the Jacobi operator J(y):x->A(x,y)y, is projectively constant. There are topological conditions imposed on such a model by Adam's Theorem concerning vector fields on spheres. In this paper we construct projective affine Osserman curvature models when the dimension is odd, when the dimension is congruent to 2 mod 4,…
We characterize manifolds which are locally conformally equivalent to either complex projective space or to its negative curvature dual in terms of their Weyl curvature tensor. As a byproduct of this investigation, we classify the conformally complex space forms if the dimension is at least 8. We also study when the Jacobi operator associated to the Weyl conformal curvature tensor of a Riemannian manifold has constant eigenvalues on the bundle of unit tangent vectors and classify such manifolds which are not conformally flat in dimensions congruent to 2 mod 4.
We expound some results about the relationships between the Jacobi operators with respect to null vectors on a Lorentzian $\mathcal{S}$-manifold $M$ and the Jacobi operators with respect to particular spacelike unit vectors on $M$. We study the number of the eigenvalues of such operators in a $ϕ$-null Osserman Lorentzian $\mathcal{S}$-manifold, under suitable assumptions on the dimension of the manifold. Then, we generalize a curvature characterization, previously obtained by the first author for Lorentzian $ϕ$-null Osserman $\mathcal{S}$-manifolds with exactly two characteristic vector fields…
We study the spectral geometry of the conformal Jacobi operator on a 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold (M,g). We show that (M,g) is conformally Osserman if and only if (M,g) is self-dual or anti self-dual. Equivalently, this means that the curvature tensor of (M,g) is given by a quaternionic structure, at least pointwise.
Osserman manifolds are a generalization of locally two-point homogeneous spaces. We introduce $k$-root manifolds in which the reduced Jacobi operator has exactly $k$ eigenvalues. We investigate one-root and two-root manifolds as another generalization of locally two-point homogeneous spaces. We prove that there is no two-root Riemannian manifold of odd dimension. In twice an odd dimension, we describe all two-root Riemannian algebraic curvature tensors and give additional conditions for two-root Riemannian manifolds.
We study when the Jacobi operator associated to the Weyl conformal curvature tensor has constant eigenvalues on the bundle of unit spacelike or timelike tangent vectors. This leads to questions in the conformal geometry of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which generalize the Osserman conjecture to this setting. We also study similar questions related to the skew-symmetric curvature operator defined by the Weyl conformal curvature tensor.
We prove a modified version of Turbiner's conjecture in three dimensions and we give a counter-example to the original conjecture. The Lie algebraic Schrödinger operators corresponding to flat metrics of a certain restricted type are shown to separate partially in either Cartesian, cylindrical or spherical coordinates.
We present a proof of Milnor conjecture in dimension 3 based on Cheeger-Colding theory on limit spaces of manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below. It is different from [Liu] that relies on minimal surface theory.
In this paper, we present the resolution of the Besse conjecture on a three dimensional compact manifold. We also prove the rigidity of the Miao-Tam critical metric on a three dimensional compact manifold with a smooth boundary.
Given a compact, three-dimensional, real-analytic Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$, we prove that the identity component of the conformal group preserves a metric in the conformal class $[g]$, or $(M,g)$ is conformally flat.
The long-standing Alekseevskii conjecture states that a connected homogeneous Einstein space G/K of negative scalar curvature must be diffeomorphic to R^n. This was known to be true only in dimensions up to 5, and in dimension 6 for non-semisimple G. In this work we prove that this is also the case in dimensions up to 10 when G is not semisimple. For arbitrary G, besides 5 possible exceptions, we show that the conjecture holds up to dimension 8.
The Hopf conjecture states that an even-dimensional, positively curved Riemannian manifold has positive Euler characteristic. We prove this conjecture under the additional assumption that a torus acts by isometries and has dimension bounded from below by a logarithmic function of the manifold dimension. The main new tool is the action of the Steenrod algebra on cohomology.
In this paper we provide the complete classification of convex cocompact Kleinian group of Hausdorff dimensions less than $1.$ In particular, we prove that every convex cocompact Kleinian group of Hausdorff dimension $<1$ is a classical Schottky group. This upper bound is sharp. The result implies that the converse of Burside's conjecture \cite{Burside} is true: All non-classical Schottky groups must have Hausdorff dimension $\ge1$. The prove of the theorem relies on the result of Hou \cite{Hou}.
We study the twisted Ruelle zeta function $ζ_X(s)$ for smooth Anosov vector fields $X$ acting on flat vector bundles over smooth compact manifolds. In dimension $3$, we prove Fried conjecture, relating Reidemeister torsion and $ζ_X(0)$. In higher dimensions, we show more generally that $ζ_X(0)$ is locally constant with respect to the vector field $X$ under a spectral condition. As a consequence, we also show Fried conjecture for Anosov flows near the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. This gives the first examples of non-analytic Anosov flows and geodesic flo…
