Let us call a function $f$ from a space $X$ into a space $Y$ preserving if the image of every compact subspace of $X$ is compact in $Y$ and the image of every connected subspace of $X$ is connected in $Y$. By elementary theorems a continuous function is always preserving. Evelyn R. McMillan proved in 1970 that if $X$ is Hausdorff, locally connected and Frechet, $Y$ is Hausdorff, then the converse is also true: any preserving function $f:X\to Y$ is continuous. The main result of this paper is that if $X$ is any product of connected linearly ordered spaces (e.g. if $X = R^κ$) and $f:X \to Y$ is a preserving function into a regular space $Y$, then $f$ is continuous.
We call a function $f: X\to Y$ $P$-preserving if, for every subspace $A \subset X$ with property $P$, its image $f(A)$ also has property $P$. Of course, all continuous maps are both compactness- and connectedness-preserving and the natural question about when the converse of this holds, i.e. under what conditions is such a map continuous, has a long history. Our main result is that any non-trivial product function, i.e. one having at least two non-constant factors, that has connected domain, $T_1$ range, and is connectedness-preserving must actually be continuous. The analogous statement badly…
This article introduces strongly proximal continuous (s.p.c.) functions, strong proximal equivalence (s.p.e.) and strong connectedness. A main result is that if topological spaces $X,Y$ are endowed with compatible strong proximities and $f:X\longrightarrow Y$ is a bijective s.p.e., then its extension on the hyperspaces $\CL(X)$ and $\CL(Y)$, endowed with the related strongly hit and miss hypertopologies, is a homeomorphism. For a topological space endowed with a strongly near proximity, strongly proximal connectedness implies connectedness but not conversely. Conditions required for strongly p…
In this work, we will introduce the notion of generalized topological groups using generalized topological structure and generalized continuity defined by ?A. Cs?asz?ar [2]. We will discuss some basic properties of this kind of structures and connectedness properties of this structures are given. Keywords: Generalized topology; generalized continuity; generalized topological groups; generalized connectedness.
We establish a compactness result in approach theory which we apply to obtain a generalization of Prokhorov's Theorem for the continuity approach structure.
On taking a non-trivial and semi-transitive bi-relation constituted by two (hard and soft) binary relations, we report a (i) p-continuity assumption that guarantees the completeness and transitivity of its soft part, and a (ii) characterization of a connected topological space in terms of its attendant properties on the space. Our work generalizes antecedent results in applied mathematics, all following Eilenberg (1941), and now framed in the context of a parametrized-topological space. This re-framing is directly inspired by the continuity assumption in Wold (1943-44) and the mixture-space st…
Let $X$ be a first countable Hausdorff topological group. The limit of a sequence in $X$ defines a function denoted by $lim$ from the set of all convergence sequences to $X$. This definition was modified by Connor and Grosse-Erdmann for real functions by replacing $lim$ with an arbitrary linear functional $G$ defined on a linear subspace of the vector space of all real sequences. Çakallı extended the concept to topological group setting and introduced the concept of $G$-sequential compactness and investigated $G$-sequential continuity and $G$-sequential compactness in topological groups. In th…
We announce and examine the conjecture that each infinite connected normal Hausdorff space has a quotient homeomorphic to the unit interval, shown to be true with the additional assumption of compactness or local connectedness. Some connected subsets of the plane are considered to show the difficulties involved in developing a general argument.
We investigate two approximation relations on a T0 topological space, the n-approximation, and the d-approximation, which are generalizations of the way-below relation on a dcpo. Different kinds of continuous spaces are defined by the two approximations and are all shown to be directed spaces. We show that the continuity of a directed space is very similar to the continuity of a dcpo in many aspects, which indicates that the notion of directed spaces is a suitable topological extension of dcpos. The main results are: (1) A topological space is continuous iff it is a retract of an algebraic spac…
We study a topology on a space of functions, called sticking topology, with the property to be the weakest among the topologies preserving continuity. In suitable frameworks, this topology preserves borelianity, local integrability, right continuity and other properties. It is coarser than the locally uniform convergence and it allows the presence of gliding humps as we show on examples. We prove relative compactness criteria for this topology and we consider some extensions.
Several mathematicians, including myself, have studied some unifications in general topological spaces as well as in fuzzy topological spaces. For instance in our earlier works, using operations on topological spaces, we have tried to unify some concepts similar to continuity, openness, closedness of functions, compactness, filter convergence, closedness of graphs, countable compactness and Lindelof property. In this article, to obtain further unifications, we will study $ϕ_{1,2}$-compactness and relations between $ϕ_{1,2}$-compactness, filters and $ϕ_{1,2}$% -closure operator.
We consider classes T of topological spaces (referred to as T-spaces) that are stable under continuous images and frequently under arbitrary products. A local T-space has for each point a neighborhood base consisting of subsets that are T-spaces in the induced topology. A general necessary and sufficient criterion for a product of topological spaces to be a local T-space in terms of conditions on the factors enables one to establish a broad variety of theorems saying that a product of spaces has a certain local property (like local compactness, local sequential compactness, local σ-compactness…
For a $T_0$ space $X$, let $\mk (X)$ be the poset of all compact saturated sets of $X$ with the reverse inclusion order. The space $X$ is said to have property Q if for any $K_1, K_2\in \mk (X)$, $K_2\ll K_1$ in $\mk (X)$ if{}f $K_2\subseteq \ii~\!K_1$. In this paper, we give several connections among the well-filteredness of $X$, the sobriety of $X$, the local compactness of $X$, the core compactness of $X$, the property Q of $X$, the coincidence of the upper Vietoris topology and Scott topology on $\mk (X)$, and the continuity of $x\mapsto\ua x : X \longrightarrow Σ~\!\! \mk (X)$ (where $Σ~\…
In a metric space, such as the real numbers with their standard metric, a set A is open if and only if no sequence with terms outside of A has a limit inside A. Moreover, a metric space is compact if and only if every sequence has a converging subsequence. However, in a general topological space these equivalences may fail. Unfortunately this fact is sometimes overlooked in introductory courses on general topology, leaving many students with misconceptions, e.g. that compactness would always be equal to sequence compactness. The aim of this article is to show how sequences might fail to charac…
The underlying theme of this article is a class of sequences in metric structures satisfying a much weaker kind of Cauchy condition, namely quasi-Cauchy sequences (introduced in \cite{bc}) that has been used to define several new concepts in recent articles \cite{PDSPNA2, PDSPNA1}. We first consider a weaker notion of precompactness based on the idea of quasi-Cauchy sequences and establish several results including a new characterization of compactness in metric spaces. Next we consider associated idea of continuity, namely, ward continuous functions \cite{caka}, as this class of functions str…
This note generalizes Berge's maximum theorem to noncompact image sets. It is also clarifies the results from E.A. Feinberg, P.O. Kasyanov, N.V. Zadoianchuk, "Berge's theorem for noncompact image sets," J. Math. Anal. Appl. 397(1)(2013), pp. 255-259 on the extension to noncompact image sets of another Berge's theorem, that states semi-continuity of value functions. Here we explain that the notion of a $\K$-inf-compact function introduced there is applicable to metrizable topological spaces and to more general compactly generated topological spaces. For Hausdorff topological spaces we introduce…
