We give a simple direct proof (for the case of Hamiltonian circle actions with isolated fixed points) that Tolman and Weitsman's description of the kernel of the Kirwan map (in other words the sum of those equivariant cohomology classes vanishing on one side of a collection of hyperplanes) is equivalent to the characterization of this kernel given by the residue theorem of Jeffrey and Kirwan.

Kirwan surjectivity in K-theory for Hamiltonian loop group quotients

Let G be a compact Lie group and LG its associated loop group. The main result of this manuscript is a surjectivity theorem from the equivariant K-theory of a Hamiltonian LG-space onto the integral K-theory of its Hamiltonian LG-quotient. Our result is a K-theoretic analogue of previous work in rational Borel-equivariant cohomology of Bott, Tolman, and Weitsman. The Kernel of the Equivariant Kirwan Map and the Residue Formula

Using the notion of equivariant Kirwan map, as defined by Goldin, we prove that -- in the case of Hamiltonian torus actions with isolated fixed points -- Tolman and Weitsman's description of the kernel of the Kirwan map can be deduced directly from the residue theorem of Jeffrey and Kirwan. A characterization of the kernel of the Kirwan map in terms of residues of one variable (i.e. associated to Hamiltonian circle actions) is obtained.

Consider a Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group K on a compact symplectic manifold. We find descriptions of the kernel of the Kirwan map corresponding to a regular value of the moment map $κ_K$. The cohomology ring of weight varieties and polygon spaces

We use a theorem of Tolman and Weitsman to find explicit formulæfor the rational cohomology rings of the symplectic reduction of flag varieties in C^n, or generic coadjoint orbits of SU(n), by (maximal) torus actions. We also calculate the cohomology ring of the moduli space of $n$ points in CP^k, which is isomorphic to the Grassmannian of k-planes in C^n, by realizing it as a degenerate coadjoint orbit.

The equivariant cohomology of hypertoric varieties and their real loci

Let M be a Hamiltonian T space with a proper moment map, bounded below in some component. In this setting, we give a combinatorial description of the T-equivariant cohomology of M, extending results of Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson and techniques of Tolman and Weitsman. Moreover, when M is equipped with an antisymplectic involution σanticommuting with the action of T, we also extend to this noncompact setting the ``mod 2'' versions of these results to the real locus Q:= M^σof M. We give applications of these results to the theory of hypertoric varieties.

Equivariant cohomology for Hamiltonian torus actions on symplectic orbifolds

In this paper, we study Hamiltonian R-actions on symplectic orbifolds [M/S], where R and S are tori. We prove an injectivity theorem and generalize Tolman-Weitsman's proof of the GKM theorem in this setting. The main example is the symplectic reduction X//S of a Hamiltonian T-manifold X by a subtorus S of T. This includes the class of symplectic toric orbifolds. We define the equivariant Chen-Ruan cohomology ring and use the above results to establish a combinatorial method of computing this equivariant Chen-Ruan cohomology in terms of orbifold fixed point data.

An effective algorithm for the cohomology ring of symplectic reductions

Let G be a compact torus acting on a compact symplectic manifold M in a Hamiltonian fashion, and T a subtorus of G. We prove that the kernel of $κ:H_G^*(M)\to H^*(M//G)$ is generated by a small number of classes $α\in H_G^*(M)$ satisfying very explicit restriction properties.
