The reductions of the Heun equation to the hypergeometric equation by polynomial transformations of its independent variable are enumerated and classified. Heun-to-hypergeometric reductions are similar to classical hypergeometric identities, but the conditions for the existence of a reduction involve features of the Heun equation that the hypergeometric equation does not possess; namely, its cross-ratio and accessory parameters. The reductions include quadratic and cubic transformations, which may be performed only if the singular points of the Heun equation form a harmonic or an equianharmonic quadruple, respectively; and several higher-degree transformations. This result corrects and extends a theorem in a previous paper, which found only the quadratic transformations. [See K. Kuiken, "Heun's equation and the hypergeometric equation", SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis 10:3 (1979), 655-657.]
In this work we establish new forms of Heun-to-Heun transformations and Heun-to-Hypergeometric transformations. The transformations are realised by changing the independent variable in a non-linear way. Using these we also point out some simple examples of transformations between equations that are not Fuchsian and that generalise the Heun-to-Hypergeometric transformations.
We study Heun's differential equation in the case that one of the singularities is apparent. In particular we conjecture a relationship with generalized hypergeometric differential equation and establish it in some cases. We apply our results to exceptional Jacobi polynomials.
We construct several expansions of the solutions of the confluent Heun equation in terms of the incomplete Beta functions and the Appell generalized hypergeometric functions of two variables of the fist kind. The coefficients of different expansions obey four-, five-, or six-term recurrence relations that are reduced to ones involving less number of terms only in a few exceptional cases. The conditions for deriving finite-sum solutions via termination of the series are discussed.
The hypergeometric and Heun functions are classical special functions. Transformation formulas between them are commonly induced by pull-back transformations of their differential equations, with respect to some coverings P1-to-P1. This gives expressions of Heun functions in terms of better understood hypergeometric functions. This article presents the list of hypergeometric-to-Heun pull-back transformations with a free continuous parameter, and illustrates most of them by a Heun-to-hypergeometric reduction formula. In total, 61 parametric transformations exist, of maximal degree 12.
We present infinitely many solutions of the general Heun equation in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions. Each solution assumes that two restrictions are imposed on the involved parameters: a characteristic exponent of one of the singularities should be a non-zero integer, and the accessory parameter must satisfy a polynomial equation.
We examine the power-series solutions and the series solutions in terms of the Hermite functions for the biconfluent Heun equation. Infinitely many cases for which a solution of the biconfluent equation is presented as an irreducible linear combination of four generalized hypergeometric functions, that in general do not reduce to polynomials, are identified.
Pull-back transformations between Heun and Gauss hypergeometric equations give useful expressions of Heun functions in terms of better understood hypergeometric functions. This article classifies, up to Mobius automorphisms, the coverings P1-to-P1 that yield pull-back transformations from hypergeometric to Heun equations with at least one free parameter (excluding the cases when the involved hypergeometric equation has cyclic or dihedral monodromy). In all, 61 parametric hypergeometric-to-Heun transformations are found, of maximal degree 12. Among them, 28 pull-backs are compositions of smalle…
We show that there exist infinitely many particular choices of parameters for which the three-term recurrence relations governing the expansions of the solutions of the general Heun equation in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions become two-term. In these cases the coefficients are explicitly written in terms of the gamma functions.
We review the series solutions of the general and single-confluent Heun equations in terms of powers, ordinary-hypergeometric and confluent-hypergeometric functions. The conditions under which the expansions reduce to finite sums as well as the cases when the coefficients of power-series expansions obey two-term recurrence relations are discussed. Infinitely many cases for which a solution of a general or single-confluent Heun equation is written through a single generalized hypergeometric function are indicated. It is shown that the parameters of this generalized hypergeometric function are t…
We show that there exist infinitely many nontrivial choices of parameters of the single confluent Heun equation for which the three-term recurrence relations governing the expansions of the solutions in terms of the confluent hypergeometric functions 1F1 and 0F1 are reduced to two-term ones. In such cases the expansion coefficients are explicitly calculated in terms of the Euler gamma functions.
We consider some hypergeometric functions and prove that they are elementary functions. Consequently, the second order moments of Meyer-Konig and Zeller type operators are elementary functions. The higher order moments of these operators are expressed in terms of elementary functions and polylogarithms. Other applications are concerned with the expansion of certain Heun functions in series or finite sums of elementary hypergeometric functions.
We present a conspicuous number of indefinite integrals involving Heun functions and their products obtained by means of the Lagrangian formulation of a general homogeneous linear ordinary differential equation. As a by-product we also derive new indefinite integrals involving the Gauss hypergeometric function and products of hypergeometric functions with elliptic functions of the first kind. All integrals we obtained cannot be computed using Maple and Mathematica.
We examine the series expansions of the solutions of the confluent Heun equation in terms of three different sets of the Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions. The coefficients of the expansions in general obey three-term recurrence relations defining double-sided infinite series; however, four-term and two-term relations are also possible in particular cases. The conditions for left- and/or right-side termination of the derived series are discussed.
Just as with the Gauss hypergeometric function, particular cases of the local Heun function can be Liouvillian (that is, "elementary") functions. One way to obtain these functions is by pull-back transformations of Gauss hypergeometric equations with Liouvillian solutions. This paper presents the Liouvillian solutions of Heun's equations that are pull-backs of the parametric hypergeometric equations with cyclic or dihedral monodromy groups.
Several expansions of the solutions of the double-confluent Heun equation in terms of the Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions are presented. Three different sets of these functions are examined. Discussing the expansions without a pre-factor, it is shown that two of these functions provide expansions the coefficients of which obey three-term recurrence relations, while for the third confluent hypergeometric function the corresponding recurrence relation generally involves five-terms. The latter relation is reduced to a three-term one only in the case when the double-confluent Heun equati…
The Painlevé equations arise from the study of Hankel determinants generated by moment matrices, whose weights are expressed as the product of ``classical" weights multiplied by suitable ``deformation factors", usually dependent on a ``time variable'' $t$. From ladder operators one finds second order linear ordinary differential equations for associated orthogonal polynomials with coefficients being rational functions. The Painlevé and related functions appear as the residues of these rational functions. We will be interested in the situation when $n$, the order of the Hankel matrix and also t…
We examine the expansions of the solutions of the general Heun equation in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions. We present several expansions using functions, the forms of which differ from those applied before. In general, the coefficients of the expansions obey three-term recurrence relations. However, there exist certain choices of the parameters for which the recurrence relations become two-term. The coefficients of the expansions are then explicitly expressed in terms of the gamma functions. Discussing the termination of the presented series, we show that the finite-sum solutions …
Since the advent of quantum mechanics different approaches to find analytical solutions of the Schrödinger equation have been successfully developed. Here we follow and generalize the approach pioneered by Natanzon and others by which the Schrödinger equations can be transformed into another well-known equation for transcendental function (e.g., the hypergeometric equation). This sets a class of potentials for which this transformation is possible. Our generalization consists in finding potentials allowing the transformation of the Schrödinger equation into a triconfluent Heun equation. We fin…
The Heun's equation is the Fuchsian equation of second order with four regular singularities. Heun functions generalize well-known special functions such as Spheroidal Wave, Lamé, Mathieu, hypergeometric-type functions, etc. The recursive relation of coefficients starts to appear by putting a power series into the Heun equation. A local Heun function consists of the three term recurrence relation in its power series, and we prove that the function is not convergent on the boundary of the disc of convergence.
The usefulness of Riemann P-symbols in deriving identities involving the parametrized special function Hl is explored. Hl is the analytic local solution of the Heun equation, the canonical second-order differential equation on the Riemann sphere with four regular singular points. The identities discussed include ones coming from Moebius automorphisms and F-homotopies, and also quadratic and biquadratic transformations. The case when Hl is identical to a generalized hypergeometric function of 3F2 type is examined, and Pfaff and Euler transformations of 3F2(a1,a2,e+1;b1,e;x) are derived. They ex…
A machine-generated list of 192 local solutions of the Heun equation is given. They are analogous to Kummer's 24 solutions of the Gauss hypergeometric equation, since the two equations are canonical Fuchsian differential equations on the Riemann sphere with four and three singular points, respectively. Tabulation is facilitated by the identification of the automorphism group of the equation with n singular points as the Coxeter group D_n. Each of the 192 expressions is labeled by an element of D_4. Of the 192, 24 are equivalent expressions for the local Heun function Hl, and it is shown that t…
We show that in the particular case when a characteristic exponent of the singularity at infinity is zero the solution of the general Heun equation can be expanded in terms of the incomplete Beta functions. By means of termination of the series, closed-form solutions are derived for two infinite sets of the involved parameters. These finite-sum solutions are written in terms of elementary functions that in general are quasi-polynomials. The coefficients of the expansion obey a three-term recurrence relation, which in some particular cases may become two-term. We discuss the case when the recur…
We study monodromy reduction of Fuchsian connections from a sheave theoretic viewpoint, focusing on the case when a singularity of a special connection with four singularities has been resolved. The main tool of study is {based on} a bundle modification technique due to Drinfeld and Oblezin. This approach via invariant spaces and eigenvalue problems allows us not only to explain Erdélyi's classical infinite hypergeometric expansions of solutions to Heun equations, but also to obtain new expansions not found in his papers. As a consequence, a geometric proof of Takemura's eigenvalues inclusion …
Biconfluent Heun equation (BHE) is a confluent case of the general Heun equation which has one more regular singular points than the Gauss hypergeometric equation on the Riemann sphere $\hat{\mathbb{C}}$. Motivated by a Nevanlinna theory (complex oscillation theory) approach, we have established a theory of \textit{periodic} BHE (PBHE) in parallel with the Lamé equation verses the Heun equation, and the Mathieu equation verses the confluent Heun equation. We have established condition that lead to explicit construction of eigen-solutions of PBHE, and their single and double orthogonality, and …
Many rationally parametrized elliptic modular equations are derived. Each comes from a family of elliptic curves attached to a genus-zero congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$, as an algebraic transformation of elliptic curve periods, parametrized by a Hauptmodul (function field generator). The periods satisfy a Picard-Fuchs equation, of hypergeometric, Heun, or more general type; so the new modular equations are algebraic transformations of special functions. When N=4,3,2 they are modular transformations of Ramanujan's elliptic integrals of signatures 2,3,4. This gives a modern interpretation to his t…
In our recent work we proposed a generalization of the beta integral method for derivation of the hypergeometric identities which can by analogy be termed "the G function integral method". In this paper we apply this technique to the cubic and the degenerate Miller-Paris transformations to get several new transformation and summation formulas for the generalized hypergeometric functions at a fixed argument. We further present an alternative approach for reducing the right hand sides resulting from our method to a single hypergeometric function which does not require the use of summation formul…
