We describe a new method of constructing Kobayashi-hyperbolic surfaces in complex projective 3-space based on deforming surfaces with a "hyperbolic non-percolation" property. We use this method to show that general small deformations of certain singular abelian surfaces of degree 8 are hyperbolic. We also show that a union of 15 planes in general position in projective 3-space admits hyperbolic deformations.
We present two methods of constructing low degree Kobayashi hyperbolic hypersurfaces in the projective space: the projection method and the deformation method. The talk is based on joint works of the speaker with B. Shiffman and C. Ciliberto.
In this article we prove that every entire curve in the complement of a generic hypersurface of degree $d\geq 586$ in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^{3}$ is algebraically degenerate i.e there exists a proper subvariety which contains the entire curve.
The main goal of this work is to prove that every entire curve in a generic hypersurface of degree greater than or equal to 593 in the complex projective space of dimension 4 is algebraically degenerated i.e contained in a proper subvariety.
In this note we show that there are algebraic families of hyperbolic, Fermat-Waring type hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4(n-1)^2, for all dimensions n>1. Moreover, there are hyperbolic Fermat-Waring hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4n^2-2n+1 possessing complete hyperbolic, hyperbolically embedded complements.
In this paper, we prove that in any projective manifold, the complements of general hypersurfaces of sufficiently large degree are Kobayashi hyperbolic. We also provide an effective lower bound on the degree. This confirms a conjecture by S. Kobayashi in 1970. Our proof, based on the theory of jet differentials, is obtained by reducing the problem to the construction of a particular example with strong hyperbolicity properties. This approach relies the construction of higher order logarithmic connections allowing us to construct logarithmic Wronskians. These logarithmic Wronskians are the buil…
We show that a general small deformation of the union of two general cones in P3 of degree >= 4 is Kobayashi hyperbolic. Hence we obtain new examples of hyperbolic surfaces in P3 of any given degree d>= 8.
We construct two classes of singular Kobayashi hyperbolic surfaces in $P^3$. The first consists of generic projections of the cartesian square $V = C \times C$ of a generic genus $g \ge 2$ curve $C$ smoothly embedded in $P^5$. These surfaces have C-hyperbolic normalizations; we give some lower bounds for their degrees and provide an example of degree 32. The second class of examples of hyperbolic surfaces in $P^3$ is provided by generic projections of the symmetric square $V' = C_2$ of a generic genus $g \ge 3$ curve $C$. The minimal degree of these surfaces is 16, but this time the normalizat…
We modify the deformation method explored previously in a joint work of B. Shiffman and the author, in order to construct further examples of Kobayashi hyperbolic surfaces in the projective 3-space of any even degree starting with degree 8.
The main goal of this work is to prove that a very generic surface of degree at least 21 in complex projective 3-dimensional space is hyperbolic in the sense of Kobayashi. This means that every entire holomorphic map $f:{\Bbb C} \to X$ to the surface is constant. In 1970, Kobayashi conjectured more generally that a (very) generic hypersurface of sufficiently high degree in projective space is hyperbolic (here, the terminology "very generic" refers to complements of countable unions of proper algebraic subsets). Our technique follows the stream of ideas initiated by Green and Griffiths in 1979,…
We describe a new method for constructing a spectrahedral representation of the hyperbolicity region of a hyperbolic curve in the real projective plane. As a consequence, we show that if the curve is smooth and defined over the rational numbers, then there is a spectrahedral representation with rational matrices. This generalizes a classical construction for determinantal representations of plane curves due to Dixon and relies on the special properties of real hyperbolic curves that interlace the given curve.
Using degeneration to scrolls, we give an easy proof of non-existence of curves of low genera on general surfaces in P3 of degree d >=5. We show, along the same lines, boundedness of families of curves of small enough genera on general surfaces in P3. We also show that there exist Kobayashi hyperbolic surfaces in P3 of degree d = 7 (a result so far unknown), and give a new construction of such surfaces of degree d = 6. Finally we provide some new lower bounds for geometric genera of surfaces lying on general hypersurfaces of degree 3d > 15 in P4.
We prove that a curve of degree $dk$ on a very general surface of degree $d \geq 5$ in $\mathbb{P}^3$ has geometric genus at least $\frac{dk(d-5)+k}{2} + 1$. This improves bounds given by G. Xu. As a corollary, we conclude that the very general quintic surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ is algebraically hyperbolic.
In this note we study the distribution of real inflection points among the ovals of a real non-singular hyperbolic curve of even degree. Using Hilbert's method we show that for any integers $d$ and $r$ such that $4\leq r \leq 2d^2-2d$, there is a non-singular hyperbolic curve of degree $2d$ in $\mathbb R^2$ with exactly $r$ line segments in the boundary of its convex hull. We also give a complete classification of possible distributions of inflection points among the ovals of a maximally inflected non-singular hyperbolic curve of degree $6$.
The paper is a contribution to the conjecture of Kobayashi that the complement of a generic curve in the projective plane is hyperbolic, provided the degree is at least five. Previously the authors treated the cases of two quadrics and a line and three quadrics. The main results are Let C be the union of three curves in P_2 whose degrees are at least two, one of which is at least three. Then for generic such configurations the complement of C is hyperbolic and hyperbolically embedded. The same statement holds for complements of curves in generic hypersurfaces X of degree at least five and curv…
The specialized Vámos polynomial is a hyperbolic polynomial of degree four in four variables with the property that none of its powers admits a definite determinantal representation. We will use a heuristical method to prove that its hyperbolicity cone is a spectrahedron.
The paper is a contribution of the conjecture of Kobayashi that the complement of a generic plain curve of degree at least five is hyperbolic. The main result is that the complement of a generic configuration of three quadrics is hyperbolic and hyperbolically embedded as well as the complement of two quadrics and a line.
Using authors's methods of 1980, 1981, some explicit finite sets of number fields containing ground fields of arithmetic hyperbolic reflection groups are defined, and good bounds of their degrees (over Q) are obtained. For example, degree of the ground field of any arithmetic hyperbolic reflection group in dimension at least 6 is bounded by 56. These results could be important for further classification. We also formulate a mirror symmetric conjecture to finiteness of the number of arithmetic hyperbolic reflection groups which was established in full generality recently.
We show how the real lines on a real del Pezzo surface of degree 1 can be split into two species, elliptic and hyperbolic, via a certain distinguished, intrinsically defined, Pin-structure on the real locus of the surface. We prove that this splitting is invariant under real automorphisms and real deformations of the surface, and that the difference between the total numbers of hyperbolic and elliptic lines is always equal to 16.
