This survey paper reports on work of Birkar, who confirmed a long-standing conjecture of Alexeev and Borisov-Borisov: Fano varieties with mild singularities form a bounded family once their dimension is fixed. Following Prokhorov-Shramov, we explain how this boundedness result implies that birational automorphism groups of projective spaces satisfy the Jordan property, answering a question of Serre in the positive.

We study the action of the Klein simple group G consisting of 168 elements on two rational threefolds: the three-dimensional projective space and a smooth Fano threefold X of anticanonical degree 22 and index 1. We show that the Cremona group of rank three has at least three non-conjugate subgroups isomorphic to G. As a by-product, we prove that X admits a Kahler-Einstein metric, and we construct a smooth polarized K3 surface of degree 22 with an action of the group G.

We study two rational Fano threefolds with an action of the icosahedral group $\mathfrak{A}_5$. The first one is the famous Burkhardt quartic threefold, and the second one is the double cover of the projective space branched in the Barth sextic surface. We prove that both of them are $\mathfrak{A}_5$-Fano varieties that are $\mathfrak{A}_5$-birationally superrigid. This gives two new embeddings of the group $\mathfrak{A}_5$ into the space Cremona group.

This note is devoted to a special Fano fourfold defined by a four-dimensional space of skew-symmetric forms in five variables. This fourfold appears to be closely related with the classical Segre cubic and its Cremona-Richmond configuration of planes. Among other exceptional properties, it is infinitesimally rigid and has Picard number six. We show how to construct it by blow-up and contraction, starting from a configuration of five planes in a four-dimensional quadric, compatibly with the symmetry group $S_5$. From this construction we are able to describe the Chow ring explicitly.
