The purpose of this paper is to give an application of the gluing theorem for special Lagrangian submanifolds of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We proved a gluing theorem before to smooth a codimension-two singularity of a particular special Lagrangian submanifold. In this paper we will show that this theorem can be applied to more general cases where different special Lagrangians are intersecting and gives a way of constructing new special Lagrangian submanifolds. As an example we will show that a smooth special Lagrangian submanifold can be obtained from five copies of RP^3 intersecting pairwise in a quintic.
The purpose of this paper is to prove a gluing theorem for a given special Lagrangian submanifold of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. The proof will be an adaption of the gluing techniques in J-holomorphic curve theory. It is a well known procedure in geometric analysis to construct new solutions to a given nonlinear partial differential equation by gluing known solutions. First an approximate solution is constructed and then using analytic methods it is perturbed to a real solution. In this paper the gluing theorem will be used for smoothing a singularity of a special Lagrangian submanifold. In particula…
Butscher, D. Lee, Y. Lee, and Joyce constructed a special Lagrangian submanifold by gluing a Lawlor neck into a transverse intersection point of two special Lagrangian submanifolds. We prove a uniqueness theorem for the gluing of flat special Lagrangian tori of real dimension 3 in a flat complex torus of complex dimension 3.
`Gluing' is a technique of constructing solutions to non-linear (elliptic) partial differential equations such as Yang--Mills equations, minimal surface equations and Einstein equations. Calibrated submanifolds are a certain class of minimal surfaces, and there are various examples of them constructed by the gluing technique. We have existence theorems in that sense, but there seems to have been no uniqueness theory for higher-dimensional ones such as special Lagrangian submanifolds, which we discuss in the present paper.
A contact stationary Legendrian submanifold of $S^{2n+1}$ is a Legendrian submanifold whose volume is stationary under contact deformations. The simplest contact stationary Legendrian submanifold (actually minimal and Legendrian) is the real, equatorial $n$-sphere $S_0$. This paper develops a method for constructing contact stationary (but not minimal) Legendrian submanifolds of $S^{2n+1}$ by gluing together configurations of sufficiently many $U(n+1)$-rotated copies of $S_0$ at isolated points of suitably transverse intersection. The resulting submanifolds are very symmetric; are geometricall…
We study gluings of asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifolds in asymptotically cylindrical Calabi--Yau manifolds. We prove both that there is a well-defined gluing map, and, after reviewing the deformation theory for special Lagrangians, prove that this gluing map defines a local diffeomorphism from matching pairs of deformations of asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangians to deformations of special Lagrangians. We also give some examples of asymptotically cylindrical special Lagrangian submanifolds to which these results apply.
We first show that the connected sum along submanifolds introduced by the second author for compact initial data sets of the vacuum Einstein system can be adapted to the asymptotically Euclidean and to the asymptotically hyperbolic context. Then, we prove that in any case, and generically, the gluing procedure can be localized, in order to obtain new solutions which coincide with the original ones outside of a neighborhood of the gluing locus.
We study partial collapsing degeneration of Hamiltonian-perturbed Floer trajectories for an adiabatic $\varepsilon$-family and its reversal adiabatic gluing, as the prototype of the partial collapsing degeneration of $2$-dimensional (perturbed) $J$-holomorphic maps to $1$-dimensional gradient segments. We consider the case when the Floer equations are $S^1$-invariant on parts of their domains whose adiabatic limits have positive lengths as $\varepsilon \to 0$, which we call thimble-flow-thimble configurations. The main gluing theorem we prove also applies to the case with Lagrangian boundaries…
By making use of the symplectic reduction and the cohomogeneity method, we give a general method for constructing Hamiltonian minimal submanifolds in Kaehler manifolds with symmetries. As applications, we construct infinitely many nontrivial complete Hamiltonian minimal submanifolds in CP^n and C^n.
We describe a new approach to the problem of constructing gluing parameterizations for open neighborhoods of boundary points of moduli spaces of anti-self-dual connections over closed four-dimensional manifolds. Our approach employs general results from differential topology for $C^1$ maps of smooth Banach manifolds with corners, providing a method that should apply to other problems in geometric analysis involving the gluing construction of solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations.
Lagrangian submanifolds of a Kaehler manifold are called Hamiltonian-stationary (or $H$-stationary for short) if it is a critical point of the area functional restricted to compactly supported Hamiltonian variations. In [B. Y. Chen, F. Dillen, L. Verstraelen and L. Vrancken, Lagrangian isometric immersions of a real-space-form $M^{n}(c)$ into a complex-space-form $\tilde{M}^{n}(4c)$, Math. Proc. Cambridge Philo. Soc. 124 (1998), 107-125], an effective method to constructing Lagrangian submanifolds of constant curvature $\varepsilon$ in complex space form $M^n(4\varepsilon)$ was introduced. In …
Suppose $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ are two special Lagrangian submanifolds of $\Rtn$ with boundary that intersect transversally at one point $p$. The set $M_{1} \cup M_{2}$ is a singular special Lagrangian variety with an isolated singularity at the point of intersection. Suppose further that the tangent planes at the intersection satisfy an angle condition (which always holds in dimension $n=3$). Then, $M_{1} \cup M_{2}$ is regularizable; in other words, there exists a family of smooth, minimal Lagrangian submanifolds $M_α$ with boundary that converges to $M_{1} \cup M_{2}$ in a suitable topology. T…
This is the second in a series of papers constructing explicit examples of special Lagrangian submanifolds in C^m. The first paper was math.DG/0008021, which studied special Lagrangian m-folds with large symmetry groups. The third is math.DG/0010036, which uses ideas from this paper to construct families of special Lagrangian 3-folds in C^3. This paper describes a construction of special Lagrangian m-folds in C^m which are fibred by (m-1)-submanifolds which are quadrics in Lagrangian planes R^m in C^m. Generically they have only discrete symmetry groups. Some of our examples have been previous…
This paper is a follow-up to an earlier paper math.DG/0410260 on desingularizations of Calabi-Yau 3-folds with a conical singularity. In math.DG/0410260 we study Calabi-Yau 3-folds M_0 with a conical singularity at x modelled on some Calabi-Yau cone V, and construct a desingularization of M_0 by gluing in an Asymptotically Conical (AC) Calabi-Yau 3-fold Y to M_0 at x. In this paper, we shall investigate a similar desingularization problem on special Lagrangian (SL) 3-folds in the corresponding Calabi-Yau 3-folds. More precisely, suppose M_0 is now a Calabi-Yau 3-fold with finitely many conical…
This is the last in a series of five papers math.DG/0211294, math.DG/0211295, math.DG/0302355, math.DG/0302356 studying compact special Lagrangian submanifolds (SL m-folds) X in (almost) Calabi-Yau m-folds M with singularities x_1,...,x_n locally modelled on special Lagrangian cones C_1,...,C_n in C^m with isolated singularities at 0. Readers are advised to begin with this paper. We survey the major results of the previous four papers, giving brief explanations of the proofs. We apply the results to describe the boundary of a moduli space of compact, nonsingular SL m-folds N in M. We prove the…
I point out some very elementary examples of special Lagrangian tori in certain Calabi-Yau manifolds that occur as hypersurfaces in complex projective space. All of these are constructed as real slices of smooth hypersurfaces defined over the reals. This method of constructing special Lagrangian submanifolds is well known. What does not appear to be in the current literature is an explicit description of such examples in which the special Lagrangian submanifold is a 3-torus.
We introduce special Lagrangian submanifolds in C^m and in (almost) Calabi-Yau manifolds, and survey recent results on singularities of special Lagrangian submanifolds, and their application to the SYZ Conjecture. The paper is aimed at graduate students in Geometry, String Theorists, and others wishing to learn the subject. Special Lagrangian m-folds in C^m are defined, and ways of constructing them described. 'Almost Calabi-Yau manifolds' (a generalization of Calabi-Yau manifolds useful in special Lagrangian geometry) are introduced, and the deformation theory, obstruction theory, and moduli …
Using a hyperKähler rotation on complex structures of a Calabi-Yau 2-fold and rolling of an isotropic 2-submanifold in a symplectic 6-manifold, we construct, by gluing, a natural family of immersed Lagrangian deformations of a branched covering of a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold and study how they deviate from being deformable to a family of special Lagrangian deformations by examining in detail Joyce's criteria on this family. The result suggests a potential image-support rigidity of A-branes that wrap around a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold, which res…
This is the third in a series of papers constructing explicit examples of special Lagrangian submanifolds in C^m. The previous paper in the series, math.DG/0008155, defined the idea of evolution data, which includes an (m-1)-submanifold P in R^n, and constructed a family of special Lagrangian m-folds N in C^m, which are swept out by the image of P under a 1-parameter family of linear or affine maps phi_t : R^n -> C^m, satisfying a first-order o.d.e. in t. In this paper we use the same idea to construct special Lagrangian 3-folds in C^3. We find a 1-1 correspondence between sets of evolution da…
This is the fourth in a series of papers math.DG/0008021, math.DG/0008155, math.DG/0010036 constructing explicit examples of special Lagrangian submanifolds (SL m-folds) in C^m. A submanifold of C^m is ruled if it is fibred by a family of real straight lines in C^m. This paper studies ruled special Lagrangian 3-folds in C^3, giving both general theory and families of examples. Our results are related to previous work of Harvey and Lawson, Borisenko and Bryant. An important class of ruled SL 3-folds is the special Lagrangian cones in C^3. Each ruled SL 3-fold is asymptotic to a unique SL cone. …
