For equations $ x'(t) = -x(t) + ζf(x(t-h)), x \in \R, f'(0)= -1, ζ> 0,$ with $C^3$-nonlinearity $f$ which has negative Schwarzian derivative and satisfies $xf(x) < 0$ for $x\not=0$, we prove convergence of all solutions to zero when both $ζ-1 >0$ and $h(ζ-1)^{1/8}$ are less than some constant (independent on $h,ζ$). This result gives additional insight to the conjecture about the equivalence between local and global asymptotical stabilities in the Mackey-Glass type delay differential equations.
The note describes the role of the Mackey-Glass equation and of a similar equation due to Lasota in the study of nonlinear delay differential equations between 1977 and 2012, as far as rigorous mathematical results are concerned, and from the very personal point of view of the author's involvement.
The Mackey--Glass equation, which was proposed to illustrate nonlinear phenomena in physiological control systems, is a classical example of a simple looking time delay system with very complicated behavior. Here we use a novel approach for chaos control: we prove that with well chosen control parameters, all solutions of the system can be forced into a domain where the feedback is monotone, and by the powerful theory of delay differential equations with monotone feedback we can guarantee that the system is not chaotic any more. We show that this domain decomposition method is applicable with …
Numerical bifurcation analysis, and in particular two-parameter continuation, is used in consort with numerical simulation to reveal complicated dynamics in the Mackey-Glass equation for moderate values of the delay close to the onset of chaos. In particular a cusp bifurcation of periodic orbits and resulting branches of folds of periodic orbits effectively partition the parameter space into regions where different behaviours are seen. The cusp bifurcation leads directly to bistability between periodic orbits, and subsequently to bistability between a periodic orbit and a chaotic attractor. Th…
In this paper we study the problem of inferring the initial conditions of a dynamical system under incomplete information. Studying several model systems, we infer the latent microstates that best reproduce an observed time series when the observations are sparse, noisy and aggregated under a (possibly) nonlinear observation operator. This is done by minimizing the least-squares distance between the observed time series and a model-simulated time series using gradient-based methods. We validate this method for the Lorenz and Mackey-Glass systems by making out-of-sample predictions. Finally, we …
In this paper, we obtain sufficient conditions for the permanence of a family of nonautonomous systems of delay differential equations. This family includes structured models from mathematical biology, with either discrete or distributed delays in both the linear and nonlinear terms, and where typically the nonlinear terms are nonmonotone. Applications to generalized Nicholson or Mackey-Glass systems are given.
The problem considered in the paper is exponential stability of linear equations and global attractivity of nonlinear non-autonomous equations which include a non-delay term and one or more delayed terms. First, we demonstrate that introducing a non-delay term with a non-negative coefficient can destroy stability of the delay equation. Next, sufficient exponential stability conditions for linear equations with concentrated or distributed delays and global attractivity conditions for nonlinear equations are obtained. The nonlinear results are applied tothe Mackey-Glass model of respiratory dyna…
We consider scalar delay differential equations $x'(t) = -δx(t) + f(t,x_t) (*)$ with nonlinear f satisfying a sort of negative feedback condition combined with a boundedness condition. The well known Mackey-Glass type equations, equations satisfying the Yorke condition, equations with maxima are kept within our considerations. Here, we establish a criterion for the global asymptotical stability of a unique steady state to $(*)$. As an example, we study Nicholson's blowflies equation, where our computations support Smith's conjecture about the equivalence of global and local asymptotical stabil…
We obtain new explicit exponential stability conditions for linear scalar equations with positive and negative delayed terms $$ \dot{x}(t)+ \sum_{k=1}^m a_k(t)x(h_k(t))- \sum_{k=1}^l b_k(t)x(g_k(t))=0 $$ and its modifications, and apply them to investigate local stability of Mackey--Glass type models $$\dot{x}(t)=r(t)\left[β\frac{x(g(t))}{1+x^n(g(t))}-γx(h(t))\right]$$ and $$\dot{x}(t)=r(t)\left[β\frac{x(g(t))}{1+x^n(h(t))}-γx(t)\right].$$
In this paper, we investigate a class of non-monotone reaction-diffusion equations with distributed delay and a homogenous boundary Neumann condition, which have a positive steady state. The main concern is the global attractivity of the unique positive steady state. To achieve this, we use an argument of a sub and super-solution combined with fluctuation method. We also give a condition for which the exponential stability of the positive steady state is reached. As an example, we apply our results to diffusive Nicholson blowflies and diffusive Mackey-Glass equation with distributed delay. We …
For a nonlinear equation with several variable delays $$ \dot{x}(t)=\sum_{k=1}^m f_k(t, x(h_1(t)),\dots,x(h_l(t)))-g(t,x(t)), $$ where the functions $f_k$ increase in some variables and decrease in the others, we obtain conditions when a positive solution exists on $[0, \infty)$, as well as explore boundedness and persistence of solutions. Finally, we present sufficient conditions when a solution is unbounded. Examples include the Mackey-Glass equation with non-monotone feedback and two variable delays; its solutions can be neither persistent nor bounded, unlike the well studied case when thes…
We gain further insight into the use of the Schwarzian derivative to obtain new results for a family of functional differential equations including the famous Wright's equation and the Mackey-Glass type delay differential equations. We present some dichotomy results, which allow us to get easily computable bounds of the global attractor. We also discuss related conjectures, and formulate new open problems.
New explicit exponential stability conditions are presented for the non-autonomous scalar linear functional differential equation $$ \dot{x}(t)+ \sum_{k=1}^m a_k(t)x(h_k(t))+\int_{g(t)}^t K(t,s) x(s)ds=0, $$ where $h_k(t)\leq t$, $g(t)\leq t$, $a_k(\cdot)$ and the kernel $K(\cdot,\cdot)$ are oscillatory and, generally, discontinuous functions. The proofs are based on establishing boundedness of solutions and later using the exponential dichotomy for linear equations stating that either the homogeneous equation is exponentially stable or a non-homogeneous equation has an unbounded solution for …
We prove the existence of a continuous family of positive and generally non-monotone travelling fronts in delayed reaction-diffusion equations $u_t(t,x) = Δu(t,x)- u(t,x) + g(u(t-h,x)) (*)$, when $g \in C^2(R_+,R_+)$ has exactly two fixed points: $x_1= 0$ and $x_2= a >0$. Recently, non-monotonic waves were observed in numerical simulations by various authors. Here, for a wide range of parameters, we explain why such waves appear naturally as the delay $h$ grows. For the case of $g$ with negative Schwarzian, our conditions are rather optimal; we observe that the well known Mackey-Glass type equ…
This work concerns the dynamics of a certain class of delay differential equations (DDEs) which we refer to as state dependent delay maps. These maps are generated by delay differential equations where the derivative of the current state depends only on delayed variables, and not on the un-delayed state. However, we allow that the delay is itself a function of the state variable. A delay map with constant delays can be rewritten explicitly as a discrete time dynamical system on an appropriate function space, and a delay map with small state dependent terms can be viewed as a ``non-autonomous''…
We give bounds for the global attractor of the delay differential equation $x'(t) =-μx(t)+f(x(t-τ))$, where $f$ is unimodal and has negative Schwarzian derivative. If $f$ and $μ$ satisfy certain condition, then, regardless of the delay, all solutions enter the domain where f is monotone decreasing and the powerful results for delayed monotone feedback can be applied to describe the asymptotic behaviour of solutions. In this situation we determine the sharpest interval that contains the global attractor for any delay. In the absence of that condition, improving earlier results, we show that if …
A novel way of using neural networks to learn the dynamics of time delay systems from sequential data is proposed. A neural network with trainable delays is used to approximate the right hand side of a delay differential equation. We relate the delay differential equation to an ordinary differential equation by discretizing the time history and train the corresponding neural ordinary differential equation (NODE) to learn the dynamics. An example on learning the dynamics of the Mackey-Glass equation using data from chaotic behavior is given. After learning both the nonlinearity and the time del…
We consider equation $u_t(t,x) = Δu(t,x)- u(t,x) + g(u(t-h,x)) (*) $, when $g:\R_+\to \R_+$ has exactly two fixed points: $x_1= 0$ and $x_2=κ>0$. Assuming that $g$ is unimodal and has negative Schwarzian, we indicate explicitly a closed interval $\mathcal{C} = \mathcal{C}(h,g'(0),g'(κ)) = [c_*,c^*]$ such that $(*)$ has at least one (possibly, nonmonotone) travelling front propagating at velocity $c$ for every $c \in \mathcal{C}$. Here $c_*>0$ is finite and $c^* \in \R_+ \cup \{+\infty\}$. Every time when $\mathcal{C}$ is not empty, the minimal bound $c_*$ is sharp so that there are not wavefro…
Systems whose time evolutions are entirely deterministic can nevertheless be studied probabilistically, i.e. in terms of the evolution of probability distributions rather than individual trajectories. This approach is central to the dynamics of ensembles (statistical mechanics) and systems with uncertainty in the initial conditions. Delay differential equations (DDEs) are a particular class of deterministic systems, distinguished by an explicit dependence of the dynamics on past states. A probabilistic approach to DDEs is lacking. The main problems we consider in developing such an approach ar…
