We provide a model for an open invariant neighborhood of any orbit in a symplectic manifold endowed with a canonical proper symmetry. Our results generalize the constructions of Marle and Guillemin and Sternberg for canonical symmetries that have an associated momentum map. In these papers the momentum map played a crucial role in the construction of the tubular model. The present work shows that in the construction of the tubular model it can be used the so called Chu map instead, which exists for any canonical action, unlike the momentum map. Hamilton's equations for any invariant Hamiltonian function take on a particularly simple form in these tubular variables. As an application we will find situations, that we will call tubewise Hamiltonian, in which the existence of a standard momentum map in invariant neighborhoods is guaranteed.
Given a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ endowed with a proper Hamiltonian action of a Lie group $G$, we consider the action induced by a Lie subgroup $H$ of $G$. We propose a construction for two compatible Witt-Artin decompositions of the tangent space of $M$, one relative to the $G$-action and one relative to the $H$-action. In particular, we provide an explicit relation between the respective symplectic slices.
Our paper develops a theory of Poisson slices and a uniform approach to their partial compactifications. The theory in question is loosely comparable to that of symplectic cross-sections in real symplectic geometry.
A general slice theorem for the action of a Fréchet Lie group on a Fréchet manifolds is established. The Nash-Moser theorem provides the fundamental tool to generalize the result of Palais to this infinite-dimensional setting. The presented slice theorem is illustrated by its application to gauge theories: the action of the gauge transformation group admits smooth slices at every point and thus the gauge orbit space is stratified by Fréchet manifolds. Furthermore, a covariant and symplectic formulation of classical field theory is proposed and extensively discussed. At the root of this novel f…
The Darboux-Weinstein decomposition is a central result in the theory of Poisson (degenerate symplectic) varieties, which gives a local decomposition at a point as a product of the formal neighborhood of the symplectic leaf through the point and a formal slice. Recently, conical symplectic resolutions, and more generally, Poisson cones, have been very actively studied in representation theory and algebraic geometry. This motivates asking for a C*-equivariant version of the Darboux-Weinstein decomposition. In this paper, we develop such a theory, prove basic results on their existence and uniqu…
This article concerns cotangent-lifted Lie group actions; our goal is to find local and ``semi-global'' normal forms for these and associated structures. Our main result is a constructive cotangent bundle slice theorem that extends the Hamiltonian slice theorem of Marle, Guillemin and Sternberg. The result applies to all proper cotangent-lifted actions, around points with fully-isotropic momentum values. We also present a ``tangent-level'' commuting reduction result and use it to characterise the symplectic normal space of any cotangent-lifted action. In two special cases, we arrive at splitti…
Using the symplectic geometry of certain manifolds which appear naturally in Lie theory, we define an invariant which assigns a graded abelian group to an oriented link. The relevant manifolds are transverse slices to certain nilpotent orbits inside sl_{2m}, and intersections of those with regular semisimple orbits. The invariant is conjectured to be equal to Khovanov's combinatorially defined homology theory (with the bigrading of that theory collapsed in a certain way).
Our main result gives an adjunction inequality for embedded surfaces in certain $4$-manifolds with contact boundary under a non-vanishing assumption on the Bauer--Furuta type invariants. Using this, we give infinitely many knots in $S^3$ that are not smoothly H-slice (that is, bounding a null-homologous disk) in many $4$-manifolds but they are topologically H-slice. In particular, we give such knots in the boundaries of the punctured elliptic surfaces $E(2n)$. In addition, we give obstructions to codimension-0 orientation-reversing embedding of weak symplectic fillings with $b_3=0$ into closed…
We prove the Poisson geometric version of the Local Reeb Stability (from foliation theory) and of the Slice Theorem (from equivariant geometry). The result is also a generalization of Conn's linearization theorem from one-point leaves to arbitrary symplectic leaves (however, we do not make use of Conn's theorem).
A locally conformally symplectic (LCS) form is an almost symplectic form $ω$ such that a closed one-form $θ$ exists with $dω= θ\wedge ω$. We present a version of the well-known result of Darboux and Weinstein in the LCS setting and give an application concerning Lagrangian submanifolds.
We define a class of transversal slices in spaces which are quasi-Poisson for the action of a complex semisimple group G. This is a multiplicative analogue of Whittaker reduction. One example is the multiplicative universal centralizer of G, which is equipped with the usual symplectic structure in this way. We construct a smooth relative compactification by taking the closure of each centralizer fiber in the wonderful compactification of G. By realizing this partial compactification as a transversal in a larger quasi-Poisson variety, we show that it is smooth and log-symplectic.
In this article, we initiate a geometric measure theoretic approach to symplectic Hodge theory. In particular, we apply one of the central results in geometric measure theory, the Federer-Fleming deformation theorem, together with the cohomology theory of normal cur- rents on a differential manifold, to establish a fundamental property on symplectic Harmonic forms. We show that on a closed symplectic manifold, every real primitive cohomology class of positive degrees admits a symplectic Harmonic representative not supported on the entire mani- fold. As an application, we use it to investigate …
The imploded cross-section of a symplectic manifold is a stratified space allowing for an abelianization of its symplectic reduction. After recalling symplectic and Poisson reduction and reviewing the basics of symplectic implosion, we prove a cross-section theorem for Poisson manifolds, generalizing the Guillemin-Sternberg theorem for symplectic manifolds, which constitutes a first step towards Poisson implosion. On our way, we find and fix a mistake in the proof of Guillemin-Sternberg's theorem, and we identify Poisson transversals as the right analogue to symplectic submanifolds in this con…
Given a projective sequence of Banach bundles, each one provided with a of weak symplectic form, we look for conditions under which, the corresponding sequence of weak symplectic forms gives rise to weak symplectic form on the projective limit bundle. Then we apply this results to the tangent bundle of a projective limit of Banach manifolds. This naturally leads to ask about conditions under which the Darboux Theorem is also true on the projective limit of Banach manifolds. We will give some necessary and some sufficient conditions so that such a result is true. Then we discuss why, in general…
We study the symplectic structure of the holomorphic coadjoint orbits, generalizing a theorem of McDuff on the symplectic structure of Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact type.
We exhibit two three-parameter families of locally conformal symplectic forms on the solvmanifold $M_{n,k}$ considered in [1], and show, using the Hodge-de Rham theory for the Lichnerowicz cohomology that that they are not $d_ω$ exact, i.e. their Lichnerowicz classes are non-trivial (Theorem 1). This has several important geometric consequences (corollary 2, 3). This also implies that the group of automorphisms of the corresponding locally conformal symplectic structures behaves much like the group of symplectic diffeomorphisms of compact symplectic manifolds. We initiate the classification of…
Given an ascending sequence of weak symplectic Banach manifolds on which the Darboux theorem is true, we can ask about conditions under which the Darboux Theorem is also true on the direct limit. We will show in general, without very strong conditions, the answer is negative. In particular we give an example of an ascending weak symplectic Banach manifolds on which the Darboux Theorem is true but not on the direct limit. In a second part, we illustrate this discussion in the context of an ascending sequences of Sobolev manifolds of loops in symplectic finite dimensional manifolds. This context…
We extend the ``Extension after Restriction Principle'' for symplectic embeddings of bounded starlike domains to a large class of symplectic embeddings of unbounded starlike domains.
We introduce a de Rham model for stratified spaces arising from symplectic reduction. It turns out that the reduced symplectic form and its powers give rise to well-defined cohomology classes, even on a singular symplectic quotient.
This paper deals with the ${\mathcal C}^0$-rigidity of the reduction of coiostropic submanifolds under the action of symplectic homeomorphism. More precisely, we exhibit several situations where a symplectic homeomorphism that takes a coisotropic submanifold to a smooth submanifold (which are then known to be coisotropic by a result of Humilière-Leclercq-Seyfaddini) abides to the non-squeezing property in the reduction.
Let G be a complex semisimple Lie group and τa complex antilinear involution that commutes with the Cartan involution. If H denotes the connected subgroup of τ-fixed points in G, and K is maximally compact, each H-orbit in G/K can be equipped with a Poisson structure as described by Evens and Lu. We consider symplectic leaves of certain such H-orbits with a natural hamiltonian torus action. A symplectic convexity theorem of Hilgert-Neeb-Plank then leads to van den Ban's convexity theorem for (complex) semisimple symmetric spaces.
In this paper we present a symplectic analogue of the Fueter theorem. This allows the construction of special (polynomial) solutions for the symplectic Dirac operator $D_s$, which is defined as the first-order $\mathfrak{sp}(2n)$-invariant differential operator acting on functions on ${\mathbb R}^{2n}$ taking values in the metaplectic spinor representation.
We prove Gray--Moser stability theorems for complementary pairs of forms of constant class defining symplectic pairs, contact-symplectic pairs and contact pairs. We also consider the case of contact-symplectic and contact-contact structures, in which the constant class condition on a one-form is replaced by the condition that its kernel hyperplane distribution have constant class in the sense of E. Cartan.
We present a direct proof of Malus' theorem in geometrical Optics founded on the symplectic structure of the set of all oriented straight lines in an Euclidean affine space. Nous présentens une preuve directe du théorème de Malus de l'optique géométrique basée sur la structure symplectique de l'ensemble des droites orientées d'un espace affine euclidien.
Delzant's theorem for symplectic toric manifolds says that there is a one-to-one correspondence between certain convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and symplectic toric $2n$-manifolds, realized by the image of the moment map. I review proofs of this theorem and the convexity theorem of Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg on which it relies. Then, I describe Honda's results on the local structure of near-symplectic 4-manifolds, and inspired by recent work of Gay-Symington, I describe a generalization of Delzant's theorem to near-symplectic toric 4-manifolds. One interesting feature of the generalization …
We prove that if an (n-1)-dimensional torus acts symplectically on a 2n-dimensional manifold, then the action has a fixed point if and only if the action is Hamiltonian. One may regard it as a symplectic version of Frankel theorem. The case of n=2 is the well known theorem of McDuff. From the well known example of McDuff (a six dimensional symplectic non-Hamiltonian circle action with fixed tori) and its products with copies of a two dimensional sphere with the usual rotation, the condition on the dimension of the acting torus is optimal to obtain the result.
We study coisotropic submanifolds of $b$-symplectic manifolds. We prove that $b$-coisotropic submanifolds (those transverse to the degeneracy locus) determine the $b$-symplectic structure in a neighborhood, and provide a normal form theorem. This extends Gotay's theorem in symplectic geometry. Further, we introduce strong $b$-coisotropic submanifolds and show that their coisotropic quotient, which locally is always smooth, inherits a reduced $b$-symplectic structure.
We prove that the non-squeezing theorem of Gromov holds for symplectomorphisms on an infinite-dimensional symplectic Hilbert space, under the assumption that the image of the ball is convex. The proof is based on the construction by duality methods of a symplectic capacity for bounded convex neighbourhoods of the origin. We also discuss some examples of symplectomorphisms on infinite-dimensional spaces exhibiting behaviours which would be impossible in finite dimensions.
We provide a contact analogue of the symplectic camel theorem that holds in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}\times S^1$, and indeed generalize the symplectic camel. Our proof is based on the generating function techniques introduced by Viterbo, extended to the contact case by Bhupal and Sandon, and builds on Viterbo's proof of the symplectic camel.
We prove a gluing theorem for a symplectic vortex on a compact complex curve and a collection of holomorphic sphere bubbles. Using the theorem we show that the moduli space of regular stable symplectic vortices on a fixed curve with varying markings has the structure of a stratified-smooth topological orbifold. In addition, we show that the moduli space has a non-canonical $C^1$-orbifold structure.
We prove that when $d>2$, a $d$-dimensional symplectic quotient at the zero level of a unitary circle representation $V$ such that $V^{\Sp^1}=\{0\}$ cannot be $\Z$-graded regularly symplectomorphic to the quotient of a unitary representations of a finite group.
We investigate the failure of Bézout's Theorem for two symplectic surfaces in $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^2$ (and more generally on an algebraic surface), by proving that every plane algebraic curve $C$ can be perturbed in the $\mathscr{C}^1$-topology to an arbitrarily close smooth symplectic surface $C_ε$ with the property that the cardinality $\#C_ε\cap Z_d$ of the transversal intersection of $C_ε$ with an algebraic plane curve $Z_d$ of degree $d$, as a function of $d$ can grow arbitrarily fast. As a consequence we obtain that, although Bézout's Theorem is true for pseudoholomorphic curves with re…
A celebrated theorem in two-dimensional dynamics due to John Franks asserts that every area preserving homeomorphism of the sphere has either two or infinitely many periodic points. In this work we reprove Franks' theorem under the additional assumption that the map is smooth. Our proof uses only tools from symplectic topology and thus differs significantly from all previous proofs. A crucial role is played by the results of Ginzburg and Kerman concerning resonance relations for Hamiltonian diffeomorpisms.
The purpose of this mostly expository paper is to discuss a connection between Nielsen fixed point theory and symplectic Floer homology theory for symplectomorphisms of surface and a calculation of Seidel's symplectic Floer homology for different mapping classes. We also describe symplectic zeta functions and asympltotic symplectic invariant. A generalisation of the Poincare- Birkhoff fixed point theorem and Arnold conjecture is proposed.
In this paper we exploit the geometric approach to the virtual fundamental class, due to Fukaya-Ono and Li-Tian, to compare the virtual fundamental classes of stable maps to a symplectic manifold and a symplectic submanifold whenever all constrained stable maps to the former are contained in the latter to first order. This extends versions of a statement well-known in the algebraic category to the symplectic category, where it appears to be less familiar. The latter's inherent flexibility then leads to a confirmation of Pandharipande's Gopakumar-Vafa prediction for GW-invariants of Fano classe…
Our main interest in this paper is chiefly concerned with the conditions characterizing \textit{orthogonal and symplectic abstract differential geometries}. A detailed account about the sheaf-theoretic version of the \textit{symplectic Gram-Schmidt theorem} and of the \textit{Witt's theorem} is also given.
In this paper we show that given any 3-manifold N and any non-fibered class in H^1(N;Z) there exists a representation such that the corresponding twisted Alexander polynomial is zero. This is obtained by extending earlier work of the authors, together with results of Agol and Wise on separability of 3-manifold groups. This result allows us to completely classify symplectic 4-manifolds with a free circle action, and to determine their symplectic cones.
The classical spectral theorem completely describes self-adjoint operators on finite dimensional inner product vector spaces as linear combinations of orthogonal projections onto pairwise orthogonal subspaces. We prove a similar theorem for self-adjoint operators on finite dimensional symplectic vector spaces over perfect fields. We show that these operators decompose according to a polarization, i.e. as the product of an operator on a lagrangian subspace and its dual on a complementary lagrangian. Moreover, if all the eigenvalues of the operator are in the base field, then there exist a Darbo…
We generalize symplectic convexity theorems for Hamiltonian actions with proper momentum maps to symplectic actions on orbifolds with mod-$Γ$ proper momentum maps.
Let F be a fibration on a simply-connected base with symplectic fibre (M, ω). Assume that the fibre is nilpotent and T^{2k}-separable for some integer k or a nilmanifold. Then our main theorem, Theorem 1.8, gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the cohomology class [ω] to extend to a cohomology class of the total space of F. This allows us to describe Thurston's criterion for a symplectic fibration to admit a compatible symplectic form in terms of the classifying map for the underlying fibration. The obstruction due to Lalond and McDuff for a symplectic bundle to be Hamiltonian is als…
If $(G,V)$ is a polar representation with Cartan subspace $\mathfrak c$ and Weyl group $W$, it is shown that there is a natural morphism of Poisson schemes $\mathfrak c \oplus {\mathfrak c}^*/W \to V\oplus V^*/\!\!/\!\!/ G$. This morphism is conjectured to be an isomorphism of the underlying reduced varieties if $(G,V)$ is visible. The conjecture is proved for visible stable locally free polar representations and certain further examples.
