The present paper is a detailed version of math/0003031. We introduce and study a new basis in the algebra of symmetric functions. The elements of this basis are called the Frobenius-Schur functions (FS-functions, for short).
Our main motivation for studying the FS-functions is the fact that they enter a formula expressing the combinatorial dimension of a skew Young diagram in terms of the Frobenius coordinates. This formula plays a key role in the asymptotic character theory of the symmetric groups. The FS-functions are inhomogeneous, and their top homogeneous components coincide with the conventional Schur functions. The FS-functions are best described in the super realization of the algebra of symmetric functions. As supersymmetric functions, the FS-functions can be characterized as a solution to an interpolation problem.
Our main result is a simple determinantal formula for the transition coefficients between the FS-functions and the Schur functions. We also establish the FS analogs for a number of basic facts concerning the Schur functions: Jacobi-Trudi formula together with its dual form; combinatorial formula (expression in terms of tableaux); Giambelli formula and the Sergeev-Pragacz formula.
All these results hold for a large family of bases interpolating between the FS-functions and the ordinary Schur functions.
We introduce and study a family of inhomogeneous symmetric functions which we call the Frobenius-Schur functions. These functions are indexed by partitions and differ from the conventional Schur functions in lower terms only. Our interest in these new functions comes from the fact that they provide an explicit expression for the dimension of a skew Young diagram in terms of the Frobenius coordinates. This is important for the asymptotic theory of the characters of the symmetric groups. Our main result is a surprisingly simple determinantal expression of the Frobenius-Schur functions in terms o…
Around about 1917, Issai Schur rediscovered the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, and proved a system of polynomial identities that imply them. Schur wrote that Georg Frobenius (his former advisor) had shown him a simple, direct proof of these polynomial identities. Schur did not see fit to reveal Frobenius's proof, preferring his own rather complicated proof. But it is easy enough to guess what this `simple, direct' proof must have been. As Frobenius died in 1917, we may call this `Frobenius's last proof'.
We use k-Schur functions to get the minimal boundary of the k-bounded partition poset. This permits to describe the central random walks on affine Grassmannian elements of type A and yields a polynomial expression for their drift. We also recover Rietsch's parametriza-tion of totally nonnegative unitriangular Toeplitz matrices without using quantum cohomology of flag varieties. All the homeomorphisms we define can moreover be made explicit by using the combinatorics of k-Schur functions and elementary computations based on Perron-Frobenius theorem.
The aim of this paper is to describe structural properties of spaces of diagonal rectangular harmonic polynomials in several sets (say $k$) of $n$ variables, both as $GL_k$-modules and $S_n$-modules. We construct explicit such modules associated to any hook shape partitions. For the two sets of variables case, we conjecture that the associated graded Frobenius characteristic corresponds to the effect of the operator Nabla on the corresponding hook-indexed Schur function, up to a usual renormalization. We prove identities that give indirect support to this conjecture, and show that its restrict…
We present a Pfaffian identity involving elliptic functions, whose rational limit gives a generalization of Schur's Pfaffian identity for Pf ((x_j - x_i)/(x_j + x_i)). This identity is regarded as a Pfaffian counterpart of Frobenius identity, which is an elliptic generalization of Cauchy's determinant identity for det (1/ (x_i + x_j)).
The Kronecker product of two Schur functions $s_μ$ and $s_ν$, denoted by $s_μ*s_ν$, is the Frobenius characteristic of the tensor product of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group corresponding to the partitions $μ$ and $ν$. The coefficient of $s_λ$ in this product is denoted by $γ^λ_{μν}$, and corresponds to the multiplicity of the irreducible character $χ^λ$ in $χ^μχ^ν.$ We use Sergeev's Formula for a Schur function of a difference of two alphabets and the comultiplication expansion for $s_λ[XY]$ to find closed formulas for the Kronecker coefficients $γ^λ_{μν}$ when $λ$ is an…
In 1995, the first author introduced a multivariate generating function {$G$} that tracks the distribution of ascents and descents in labeled binary trees. In addition to proving that $G$ is symmetric, he conjectured that $G$ is Schur positive. We prove this conjecture by expanding $G$ positively in terms of ribbon Schur functions. We obtain this expansion using a weight-preserving bijection whose inverse is inspired by the Push-Glide algorithm of Préville-Ratelle and Viennot. In fact, this weight-preserving bijection allows us to establish a stronger version of the first author's conjecture s…
In the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, Sym, the basis of Schur functions is distinguished since every Schur function is isomorphic to an irreducible character of a symmetric group under the Frobenius characteristic map. In this note we show that in the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions, Nsym, of which Sym is a quotient, the recently discovered basis of noncommutative Schur functions exhibits that every noncommutative Schur function is isomorphic to a noncommutative irreducible character of a symmetric group when working in noncommutative character theory. We simultaneousl…
By computing Frobenius-Schur indicators of modules of certain weak Hopf algebras, we give a formula for the number of involutions in symmetric groups, which are contained in a given coset with respect to a given Young subgroup.
The representation theory of the symmetric groups is intimately related to geometry, algebraic combinatorics, and Lie theory. The spin representation theory of the symmetric groups was originally developed by Schur. In these lecture notes, we present a coherent account of the spin counterparts of several classical constructions such as the Frobenius characteristic map, Schur duality, the coinvariant algebra, Kostka polynomials, and Young's seminormal form.
We prove Stanley's conjecture that, if delta_n is the staircase shape, then the skew Schur functions s_{delta_n / mu} are non-negative sums of Schur P-functions. We prove that the coefficients in this sum count certain fillings of shifted shapes. In particular, for the skew Schur function s_{delta_n / delta_{n-2}}, we discuss connections with Eulerian numbers and alternating permutations.
The extended Schur functions form a basis of quasisymmetric functions that contains the Schur functions. We provide a representation-theoretic interpretation of this basis by constructing $0$-Hecke modules whose quasisymmetric characteristics are the extended Schur functions. We further prove these modules are indecomposable.
It is known that the Schur expansion of a skew Schur function runs over the interval of partitions, equipped with dominance order, defined by the least and the most dominant Littlewood-Richardson filling of the skew shape. We characterise skew Schur functions (and therefore the product of two Schur functions) which are multiplicity-free and the resulting Schur expansion runs over the whole interval of partitions, i.e. skew Schur functions having Littlewood-Richardson coefficients always equal to $1$ over the full interval.
We give a new characterization of Littlewood-Richardson-Stembridge tableaux for Schur $P$-functions by using the theory of $\mf{q}(n)$-crystals. We also give alternate proofs of the Schur $P$-expansion of a skew Schur function due to Ardila and Serrano, and the Schur expansion of a Schur $P$-function due to Stembridge using the associated crystal structures.
We study the numbers of involutions and their relation to Frobenius-Schur indicators in the groups $\mathrm{SO}^{\pm}(n,q)$ and $Ω^{\pm}(n,q)$. Our point of view for this study comes from two motivations. The first is the conjecture that a finite simple group $G$ is strongly real (all elements are conjugate to their inverses by an involution) if and only if it is totally orthogonal (all Frobenius-Schur indicators are 1), and we are able to show this holds for all finite simple groups $G$ other than the groups $\mathrm{Sp}(2n,q)$ with $q$ even or $Ω^{\pm}(4m,q)$ with $q$ even. We prove computat…
We establish an isomorphism between the center of the twisted Heisenberg category and the subalgebra of the symmetric functions $Γ$ generated by odd power sums. We give a graphical description of the factorial Schur $Q$-functions as closed diagrams in the twisted Heisenberg category and show that the bubble generators of the center correspond to two sets of generators of $Γ$ which encode data related to up/down transition functions on the Schur graph. Finally, we describe an action of the trace of the twisted Heisenberg category, the $W$-algebra $W^-\subset W_{1+\infty}$, on $Γ$.
We introduce a quasisymmetric generalization of Berele and Regev's hook Schur functions and prove that these new quasisymmetric hook Schur functions decompose the hook Schur functions in a natural way. We examine the combinatorics of the quasisymmetric hook Schur functions, providing a relationship to Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions and an analogue of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm. We also prove that the multiplication of quasisymmetric hook Schur functions with hook Schur functions behaves the same as the multiplication of quasisymmetric Schur functions with Schur funct…
In this paper we classify all Schur functions and skew Schur functions that are multiplicity free when expanded in the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions, termed F-multiplicity free. Combinatorially, this is equivalent to classifying all skew shapes whose standard Young tableaux have distinct descent sets. We then generalize our setting, and classify all F-multiplicity free quasisymmetric Schur functions with one or two terms in the expansion, or one or two parts in the indexing composition. This identifies composition shapes such that all standard composition tableaux of that shape…
Motivated by Sato and Mori's work on the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and the modified KdV equation, Mizukawa, Nakajima, and Yamada made a conjecture on 2-reduced Schur functions and Schur's Q-functions. The conjecture claims that certain sums of products of a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient and two 2-reduced Schur functions are equal to Schur's Q-functions up to a scalar multiple. In this paper we give a proof of the conjecture in cases which have not been proved yet. We introduce a new expression of Schur's Q-functions and use it to prove the conjecture. Combinatorics of the inverse Ko…
Recently a new basis for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions $QSym$, called quasisymmetric Schur functions, has been introduced by Haglund, Luoto, Mason, van Willigenburg. In this paper we extend the definition of quasisymmetric Schur functions to introduce skew quasisymmetric Schur functions. These functions include both classical skew Schur functions and quasisymmetric Schur functions as examples, and give rise to a new poset $\mathcal{L}_C$ that is analogous to Young's lattice. We also introduce a new basis for the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions $NSym$. This bas…
Some new relations on skew Schur function differences are established both combinatorially using Schützenberger's jeu de taquin, and algebraically using Jacobi-Trudi determinants. These relations lead to the conclusion that certain differences of skew Schur functions are Schur positive. Applying these results to a basis of symmetric functions involving ribbon Schur functions confirms the validity of a Schur positivity conjecture due to McNamara. A further application reveals that certain differences of products of Schubert classes are Schubert positive.
We obtain general identities for the product of two Schur functions in the case where one of the functions is indexed by a rectangular partition, and give their t-analogs using vertex operators. We study subspaces forming a filtration for the symmetric function space that lends itself to generalizing the theory of Schur functions and also provides a convenient environment for studying the Macdonald polynomials. We use our identities to prove that the vertex operators leave such subspaces invariant. We finish by showing that these operators act simply on the k-Schur functions, thus leading to a…
In 2004 Rosas and Sagan asked whether there was a way to define a basis in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, NCSym, having properties analogous to the classical Schur functions. This was because they had constructed a partial such set that was not a basis. We answer their question by defining Schur functions in noncommuting variables using a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant. Our Schur functions in NCSym map to classical Schur functions under commutation, and a subset of them indexed by set partitions forms a basis for NCSym. Amongst other prop…
We consider the problem of determining when the difference of two ribbon Schur functions is a single Schur function. We fully classify the five infinite families of pairs of ribbon Schur functions whose difference is a single Schur function with corresponding partition having at most two parts at least $2$. We also prove an identity for differences of ribbon Schur functions and we determine some necessary conditions for such a difference to be Schur-positive, depending on the distribution of $1$'s and the end row lengths.
Using cocommutativity of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, certain skew Schur functions are proved to be equal. Some of these skew Schur function identities are new.
The hive model is a combinatorial device that may be used to determine Littlewood-Richardson coefficients and study their properties. It represents an alternative to the use of the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Here properties of hives are used to determine all possible multiplicity-free Schur function products and skew Schur function expansions. This confirms the results of Stembridge, Gutschwager, and Thomas and Yong, and sheds light on the combinatorial origin of the conditions for being multiplicity-free, as well as illustrating some of the key features and power of the hive model.
We introduce dual Hopf algebras which simultaneously combine the concepts of the k-Schur function theory with the quasi-symmetric Schur function theory. We construct dual basis of these Hopf algebras with remarkable properties.
Cylindric skew Schur functions, which are a generalisation of skew Schur functions, arise naturally in the study of P-partitions. Also, recent work of A. Postnikov shows they have a strong connection with a problem of considerable current interest: that of finding a combinatorial proof of the non-negativity of the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants. After explaining these motivations, we study cylindric skew Schur functions from the point of view of Schur-positivity. Using a result of I. Gessel and C. Krattenthaler, we generalise a formula of A. Bertram, I. Ciocan-Fontanine and W. Fulton, thus g…
The Bernstein operators allow to build recursively the Schur functions. We present a recursion formula for k-Schur functions at t=1 based on combinatorial operators that generalize the Bernstein operators. The recursion leads immediately to a combinatorial interpretation for the expansion coefficients of k-Schur functions at t=1 in terms of homogeneous symmetric functions.
We give a Littlewood-Richardson type rule for expanding the product of a row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function and a symmetric Schur function in terms of row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions. This expansion follows from several new properties of an insertion algorithm defined by Mason and Remmel (2010) which inserts a positive integer into a row-strict composition tableau.
We consider a filtration of the symmetric function space given by $Λ^{(k)}_t$, the linear span of Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by partitions whose first part is not larger than $k$. We introduce symmetric functions called the $k$-Schur functions, providing an analog for the Schur functions in the subspaces $Λ^{(k)}_t$. We prove several properties for the $k$-Schur functions including that they form a basis for these subspaces that reduces to the Schur basis when $k$ is large. We also show that the connection coefficients for the $k$-Schur function basis with the Macdonald polynomials be…
Mason and Remmel introduced a basis for quasisymmetric functions known as the row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions. This basis is generated combinatorially by fillings of composition diagrams that are analogous to the row-strict tableaux that generate Schur functions. We introduce a modification known as Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions, which are generated by row-strict Young composition fillings. After discussing basic combinatorial properties of these functions, we define a skew Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function using the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric funct…
We classify the $Q$-multiplicity-free skew Schur $Q$-functions. Towards this result, we also provide new relations between the shifted Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.
In this work, we establish a general relationship between the enumeration of weighted directed paths and skew Schur functions, extending work by Bousquet-Mélou, who expressed generating functions of discrete excursions in terms of rectangular Schur functions.
We classify the $Q$-homogeneous skew Schur $Q$-functions, i.e., those of the form $Q_{λ/μ} = k \cdot Q_ν$. On the way we develop new tools that are useful also in the context of other classification problems for skew Schur $Q$-functions.
Haglund, Luoto, Mason, and van Willigenburg introduced a basis for quasisymmetric functions called the quasisymmetric Schur function basis, generated combinatorially through fillings of composition diagrams in much the same way as Schur functions are generated through reverse column-strict tableaux. We introduce a new basis for quasisymmetric functions called the row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function basis, generated combinatorially through fillings of composition diagrams in much the same way as Schur functions are generated through row-strict tableaux. We describe the relationship between…
If the moments of a probability measure on $\R$ are interpreted as a specialization of complete homogeneous symmetric functions, its free cumulants are, up to sign, the corresponding specializations of a sequence of Schur positive symmetric functions $(f_n)$. We prove that $(f_n)$ is the Frobenius characteristic of the natural permutation representation of $\SG_n$ on the set of prime parking functions. This observation leads us to the construction of a Hopf algebra of parking functions, which we study in some detail.
We prove that multiparameter Schur $Q$-functions, which include as specializations factorial Schur $Q$-functions and classical Schur $Q$-functions, provide solutions of the BKP hierarchy
We give a combinatorial formula for LLT cumulants of unicellular unilevelled shapes in terms of parking functions and Cayley trees. Our formula implies previously conjectured Schur positivity.
Subsequently to the author's preceding paper, we give full proofs of some explicit formulas about factorizations of $K$-$k$-Schur functions associated with any multiple $k$-rectangles.
Some new identities for Schur functions are proved. In particular, we settle in the affirmative a recent conjecture of Ishikawa-Wakayama and solve a problem raised by Bressoud.
We investigate chromatic symmetric functions in the relation to the algebra $Γ$ of symmetric functions generated by Schur $Q$-functions. We construct natural bases of $Γ$ in terms of chromatic symmetric functions. We also consider the $p$-positivity of skew Schur $Q$-functions and find a class of $p$-positive ribbon Schur $Q$-functions, making a conjecture that they are \emph{all}. We include many concrete computational results that support our conjecture.
We show that no tree on twenty vertices with maximum degree ten has Schur positive chromatic symmetric function, thereby providing a counterexample to a conjecture from the paper "Schur and e-positivity of trees and cut vertices".
We describe a combinatorial formula for the coefficients when the dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions are decomposed into Young quasisymmetric Schur functions. We prove this using an analogue of Schensted insertion. Using this result, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a dual immaculate quasisymmetric function to be symmetric. Moreover, we show that the product of a Schur function and a dual immaculate quasisymmetric function expands positively in the Young quasisymmetric Schur basis. We also discuss the decomposition of the Young noncommutative Schur functions into the immac…
