A coaction d of a locally compact group G on a C*-algebra A is maximal if a certain natural map from A times_d G times_{d hat} G onto A otimes K(L^2(G)) is an isomorphism. All dual coactions on full crossed products by group actions are maximal; a discrete coaction is maximal if and only if A is the full cross-sectional algebra of the corresponding Fell bundle. For every nondegenerate coaction of G on A, there is a maximal coaction of G on an extension of A such that the quotient map induces an isomorphism of the crossed products.
In this paper we give a simple proof of the maximality of dual coactions on full cross-sectional C*-algebras of Fell bundles over locally compact groups. As applications we extend certain exotic crossed-product functors in the sense of Baum, Guentner and Willett to the category of Fell bundles and the category of partial actions and we obtain results about the K-theory of (exotic) cross-sectional algebras of Fell-bundles over K-amenable groups. As a bonus, we give a characterisation of maximal coactions of discrete groups in terms of maximal tensor products.
We present a new construction of crossed-product duality for maximal coactions that uses Fischer's work on maximalizations. Given a group $G$ and a coaction $(A,δ)$ we define a generalized fixed-point algebra as a certain subalgebra of $M(A\rtimes_δ G \rtimes_{\widehatδ} G)$, and recover the coaction via this double crossed product. Our goal is to formulate this duality in a category-theoretic context, and one advantage of our construction is that it breaks down into parts that are easy to handle in this regard. We first explain this for the category of nondegenerate *-homomorphisms, and then …
Unifying two notions of an action and coaction of a locally compact group on a $C^*$-cor\-re\-spond\-ence we introduce a coaction $(σ,δ)$ of a Hopf $C^*$-algebra $S$ on a $C^*$-cor\-re\-spond\-ence $(X,A)$. We show that this coaction naturally induces a coaction $ζ$ of $S$ on the associated Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $\mathcal{O}_X$ under the weak $δ$-invariancy for the ideal $J_X$. When the Hopf $C^*$-algebra $S$ is defined by a well-behaved multiplicative unitary, we construct a $C^*$-cor\-re\-spond\-ence $(X\rtimes_σ\widehat{S},A\rtimes_δ\widehat{S})$ from $(σ,δ)$ and show that it has a represen…
Let B be a C*-algebra with a maximal coaction of a locally compact group G, and let N and H be closed normal subgroups of G with N contained in H. We show that the process Ind_(G/H)^G which uses Mansfield's bimodule to induce representations of the crossed product of B by G from those of the restricted crossed product of B by (G/H) is equivalent to the two-stage induction process: Ind_(G/N)^G composed with Ind_(G/H)^(G/N). The proof involves a calculus of symmetric imprimitivity bimodules which relates the bimodule tensor product to the fibred product of the underlying spaces.
We survey the results required to pass between full and reduced coactions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras, which say, roughly speaking, that one can always do so without changing the crossed-product C*-algebra. Wherever possible we use definitions and constructions that are well-documented and accessible to non-experts, and otherwise we provide full details. We then give a series of applications to illustrate the use of these techniques. We obtain in particular a new version of Mansfield's imprimitivity theorem for full coactions, and prove that it gives a natural isomorphism between …
We give the beginnings of the development of a theory of what we call "R-coactions" of a locally compact group on a $C^*$-algebra. These are the coactions taking values in the maximal tensor product, as originally proposed by Raeburn. We show that the theory has some gaps as compared to the more familiar theory of standard coactions. However, we indicate how we needed to develop some of the basic properties of R-coactions as a tool in our program involving the use of coaction functors in the study of the Baum-Connes conjecture.
For any maximal coaction (A, G, delta) and any closed normal subgroup N of G, there exists an imprimitivity bimodule Y between the full crossed product A x G x N and A x G/N, together with a compatible coaction delta_Y of G. The assignment (A, delta) -> (Y, delta_Y) implements a natural equivalence between the crossed-product functors "x G x N" and "x G/N", in the category whose objects are maximal coactions of G and whose morphisms are isomorphism classes of right-Hilbert bimodule coactions of G.
The graph C*-algebra of a directed graph E is the universal C*-algebra generated by a family of partial isometries satisfying relations which reflect the path structure of E. In the first part of this paper we consider coverings of directed graphs: morphisms p:F->E which are local isomorphisms. We show that the graph algebra C*(F) can be recovered from C*(E) as a crossed product by a coaction of a homogeneous space associated to the fundamental group π_1 (E). These crossed products provide a good model for a general theory of crossed products by homogeneous spaces. The second part of the paper…
We prove gauge-invariant uniqueness theorems with respect to maximal and normal coactions for $C^*$-algebras associated to product systems of $C^*$-correspondences. Our techniques of proof are developed in the abstract context of Fell bundles. We employ inner coactions to prove an essential-inner uniqueness theorem for Fell bundles. As application, we characterise injectivity of homomorphisms on Nica's Toeplitz algebra $\Tt(G, P)$ of a quasi-lattice ordered group $(G, P)$ in the presence of a finite non-trivial set of lower bounds for all non-trivial elements in $P$.
Using the theory of weakly proper actions of locally compact groups recently developed by the authors, we give a unified proof of both reduced and maximal versions of Mansfield's Imprimitivity Theorem and obtain a general version of Landstad's Duality Theorem for twisted group coactions. As one application, we obtain the stabilization trick for arbitrary twisted coactions, showing that every twisted coaction is Morita equivalent to an inflated coaction.
Using the strong relation between coactions of a discrete group G on C*-algebras and Fell bundles over G, we prove a new version of Mansfield's imprimitivity theorem for coactions of discrete groups. Our imprimitivity theorem works for the universally defined full crossed products and arbitrary subgroups of G, as opposed to the usual theory which uses the spatially defined reduced crossed products and normal subgroups of G. Moreover, our theorem factors through the usual one by passing to appropriate quotients. As applications we show that a Fell bundle over a discrete group is amenable in the…
A cosystem consists of a possibly nonselfadoint operator algebra equipped with a coaction by a discrete group. We introduce the concept of C*-envelope for a cosystem; roughly speaking, this is the smallest C*-algebraic cosystem that contains an equivariant completely isometric copy of the original one. We show that the C*-envelope for a cosystem always exists and we explain how it relates to the usual C*-envelope. We then show that for compactly aligned product systems over group-embeddable right LCM semigroups, the C*-envelope is co-universal, in the sense of Carlsen, Larsen, Sims and Vittade…
This is a follow-up to a paper with the same title and by the same authors. In that paper, all groups were assumed to be abelian, and we are now aiming to generalize the results to nonabelian groups. The motivating point is Pedersen's theorem, which does hold for an arbitrary locally compact group $G$, saying that two actions $(A,α)$ and $(B,β)$ of $G$ are outer conjugate if and only if the dual coactions $(A\rtimes_αG,\widehatα)$ and $(B\rtimes_βG,\widehatβ)$ of $G$ are conjugate via an isomorphism that maps the image of $A$ onto the image of $B$ (inside the multiplier algebras of the respect…
Full C*-crossed products by actions of locally compact groups are characterized via the existence of suitable maximal coactions, in analogy with Landstad's characterization of reduced crossed products.
The residual finite-dimensionality of a $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra is known to be encoded in a topological property of its space of representations, stating that finite-dimensional representations should be dense therein. We extend this paradigm to general (possibly non-self-adjoint) operator algebras. While numerous subtleties emerge in this greater generality, we exhibit novel tools for constructing finite-dimensional approximations. One such tool is a notion of a residually finite-dimensional coaction of a semigroup on an operator algebra, which allows us to construct finite-dimensional approxi…
We show that the category A(G) of actions of a locally compact group G on C*-algebras (with equivariant nondegenerate *-homomorphisms into multiplier algebras) is equivalent, via a full-crossed-product functor, to a comma category of maximal coactions of G under the comultiplication (C*(G),delta_G); and also that A(G) is equivalent, via a reduced-crossed-product functor, to a comma category of normal coactions under the comultiplication. This extends classical Landstad duality to a category equivalence, and allows us to identify those C*-algebras which are isomorphic to crossed products by G a…
We examine when two maximal abelian algebras in the truncated Toeplitz operators are spatially isomorphic. This builds upon recent work of N. Sedlock, who obtained a complete description of the maximal algebras of truncated Toeplitz operators.
Given a directed graph, there exists a universal operator algebra and universal C*-algebra associated to the directed graph. In this paper we give intrinsic constructions of these objects. We provide an explicit construction for the maximal C*-algebra of an operator algebra. We also discuss uniqueness of the universal algebras for finite graphs, showing that for finite graphs the graph is an isomorphism invariant for the universal operator algebra of a directed graph. We show that the underlying undirected graph is a Banach algebra isomorphism invariant for the universal C*-algebra of a direct…
Let $X$ be a discrete metric space with bounded geometry. We show that if $X$ admits an "A-by-CE coarse fibration", then the canonical quotient map $λ: C^*_{\max}(X)\to C^*(X)$ from the maximal Roe algebra to the Roe algebra of $X$, and the canonical quotient map $λ: C^*_{u, \max}(X)\to C^*_u(X)$ from the maximal uniform Roe algebra to the uniform Roe algebra of $X$, induce isomorphisms on $K$-theory. A typical example of such a space arises from a sequence of group extensions $\{1\to N_n\to G_n\to Q_n\to 1\}$ such that the sequence $\{N_n\}$ has Yu's property A, and the sequence $\{Q_n\}$ adm…
For $α$ a positive irrational, let $\mathcal{A}_α$ be the subalgebra of continuous functions on the two-torus whose Fourier transform vanishes at $(m, n)$ if $m + αn < 0.$ These algebras were studied by Wermer and others, who proved properties such as maximality and characterized the Gelfand space. One of the major themes of current work in operator algebras is classification, but none of the properties which were investigated earlier distinguished between $\mathcal{A}_α$ and $\mathcal{A}_β,$ if $β$ is another positive irrational. We address this question. We also determine the automorphism gr…
We consider the translation dynamics on the $C^*$-algebra $\IM =\otimes_{n \in \IZ}\!M^{(n)}(\IC)$ of two sided infinite tensor product of $d$ dimensional matrices $\!M^{(n)}(\IC)=\!M_d(\IC)$ over the field of complex numbers $\IC$ and its restriction to the maximal abelian $C^*$ sub-algebra $\ID^e = \otimes_{n \in \IZ}\!D_e^{(n)}(\IC)$ of $\IM$, where each $\!D_e^{(n)}(\IC)=\!D_d(\IC)$ is the algebra of $d$ dimensional diagonal matrices with respect to an orthonormal basis $e=(e_i)$ of $\IC^d$. We prove that any two translation invariant Kolmogorov pure states of $\IM$ give unitarily equivale…
We study in this paper the maximal version of the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map for families of expanding graphs arising from residually finite groups. Unlike for the usual Roe algebra, we show that this assembly map is closely related to the (maximal) Baum-Connes assembly map for the group and is an isomorphism for a class of expanders. We also introduce a quantitative Baum-Connes assembly map and discuss its connections to K-theory of (maximal) Roe algebras.
Gong, Wang and Yu introduced a maximal, or universal, version of the Roe C*-algebra associated to a metric space. We study the relationship between this maximal Roe algebra and the usual version, in both the uniform and non-uniform cases. The main result is that if a (uniformly discrete, bounded geometry) metric space X coarsely embeds in a Hilbert space, then the canonical map between the maximal and usual (uniform) Roe algebras induces an isomorphism on K-theory. We also give a simple proof that if X has property A, then the maximal and usual (uniform) Roe algebras are the same. These two re…
Let G be a locally compact group, let $Ω:G\times G\to \mathbb{C}$ be a 2-cocycle, and let ($Φ$,$Ψ$) be a complementary pair of strictly increasing continuous Young functions. It is shown in \cite{OS2} that $(L^Φ(G),\circledast)$ becomes an Arens regular dual Banach algebra if \begin{align}\label{Eq:2-cocycle bdd sum-abstract} |Ω(s,t)|\leq u(s)+v(t) \ \ \ (s,t\in G) \end{align} for some $u,v\in \mathcal{S}^Ψ(G)$. We prove if $L^Φ(G)\subseteq L^2(G)$ and $u,v$ can be chosen to belong to $L^2(G)$, then $(L^Φ(G),\circledast)$ with the maximal operator space structure is completely isomorphic to an…
