In this article we compare the well-known Ramsey property with a dual form of it, the so called dual-Ramsey property (which was suggested first by Carlson and Simpson). Even if the two properties are different, it can be shown that all classical results known for the Ramsey property also hold for the dual-Ramsey property. We will also show that the dual-Ramsey property is closed under a generalized Suslin operation (the similar result for the Ramsey property was proved by Matet). Further we compare two notions of forcing, the Mathias forcing and a dual form of it, and will give some symmetries between them. Finally we give some relationships between the dual-Mathias forcing and the dual-Ramsey property.
Smallish large cardinals $κ$ are often characterized by the existence of a collection of filters on $κ$, each of which is an ultrafilter on the subsets of $κ$ of some transitive $\mathrm{ZFC}^-$-model of size $ κ$. We introduce a Mitchell-like order for Ramsey and Ramsey-like cardinals, ordering such collections of small filters. We show that the Mitchell-like order and the resulting notion of rank have all the desirable properties of the Mitchell order on normal measures on a measurable cardinal. The Mitchell-like order behaves robustly with respect to forcing constructions. We show that exte…
We investigate families of partitions of omega which are related to special coideals, so-called happy families, and give a dual form of Ramsey ultrafilters in terms of partitions. The combinatorial properties of these partition-ultrafilters, which we call Ramseyan ultrafilters, are similar to those of Ramsey ultrafilters. For example it will be shown that dual Mathias forcing restricted to a Ramseyan ultrafilter has the same features as Mathias forcing restricted to a Ramsey ultrafilter. Further we introduce an ordering on the set of partition-filters and consider the dual form of some cardina…
Ramsey algebras is an attempt to investigate Ramsey spaces generated by algebras in a purely combinatorial fashion. Previous studies have focused on the basic properties of Ramsey algebras and the study of a few specific examples. In this article, we study the properties of Ramsey algebras from a structural point of view. For instance, we will see that isomorphic algebras have the same Ramsey algebraic properties, but elementarily equivalent algebras need not be so, as expected. Answer to a long-standing question about the Cartesian products of Ramsey algebras is also given.
In this series of papers, we advance Ramsey theory of colorings over partitions. In this part, a correspondence between anti-Ramsey properties of partitions and chain conditions of the natural forcing notions that homogenize colorings over them is uncovered. At the level of the first uncountable cardinal this gives rise to a duality theorem under Martin's Axiom: a function $p:[ω_1]^2\rightarrowω$ witnesses a weak negative Ramsey relation when $p$ plays the role of a coloring if and only if a positive Ramsey relation holds over $p$ when $p$ plays the role of a partition. The consistency of posi…
A subset $S$ of a cardinal $κ$ is Ramsey if for every function $f:[S]^{<ω}\to κ$ with $f(a)<\min a$ for all $a\in[S]^{<ω}$, there is a set $H\subseteq S$ of cardinality $κ$ which is \emph{homogeneous} for $f$, meaning that $f\upharpoonright[H]^n$ is constant for each $n<ω$. Baumgartner proved \cite{MR0384553} that if $κ$ is a Ramsey cardinal, then the collection of non-Ramsey subsets of $κ$ is a normal ideal on $κ$. Sharpe and Welch \cite{MR2817562}, and independently Bagaria \cite{MR3894041}, extended the notion of $Π^1_n$-indescribability where $n<ω$ to that of $Π^1_ξ$-indescribability where…
In this note we study and obtain factorization theorems for colorings of matrices and Grassmannians over $\mathbb{R}$ and ${\mathbb{C}}$, which can be considered metric versions of the Dual Ramsey Theorem for Boolean matrices and of the Graham-Leeb-Rothschild Theorem for Grassmannians over a finite field.
This paper investigates properties of $σ$-closed forcings which generate ultrafilters satisfying weak partition relations. The Ramsey degree of an ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}$ for $n$-tuples, denoted $t(\mathcal{U},n)$, is the smallest number $t$ such that given any $l\ge 2$ and coloring $c:[ω]^n\rightarrow l$, there is a member $X\in\mathcal{U}$ such that the restriction of $c$ to $[X]^n$ has no more than $t$ colors. Many well-known $σ$-closed forcings are known to generate ultrafilters with finite Ramsey degrees, but finding the precise degrees can sometimes prove elusive or quite involved, at …
We study Ramsey-theoretic properties of several natural classes of finite ultrametric spaces, describe the corresponding Urysohn spaces and compute a dynamical invariant attached to their isometry groups.
We prove general sufficient and necessary conditions for the partition regularity of Diophantine equations, which extend the classic Rado's Theorem by covering large classes of nonlinear equations. Sufficient conditions are obtained by exploiting algebraic properties in the space of ultrafilters betaN, grounding on combinatorial properties of positive density sets and IP sets. Necessary conditions are proved by a new technique in nonstandard analysis, based on the use of the relation of u-equivalence for the hypernatural numbers *N.
We show that every free amalgamation class of finite structures with relations and (symmetric) partial functions is a Ramsey class when enriched by a free linear ordering of vertices. This is a common strengthening of the Nešetřil-Rödl Theorem and the second and third authors' Ramsey theorem for finite models (that is, structures with both relations and functions). We also find subclasses with the ordering property. For languages with relational symbols and unary functions we also show the extension property for partial automorphisms (EPPA) of free amalgamation classes. These general results s…
We study automorphism groups of sparse graphs from the viewpoint of topological dynamics and the Kechris, Pestov, Todorčević correspondence. We investigate amenable and extremely amenable subgroups of these groups using the space of orientations of the graph and results from structural Ramsey theory. Resolving one of the open questions in the area, we show that Hrushovski's example of an $ω$-categorical sparse graph has no $ω$-categorical expansion with extremely amenable automorphism group.
We survey recent developments concerning two properties of classes of finite structures: the Ramsey property and the extension property for partial automorphisms (EPPA).
Ramsey theory looks for regularities in large objects. Model theory studies algebraic structures as models of theories. The structural Ramsey theory combines these two fields and is concerned with Ramsey-type questions about certain model-theoretic structures. In 2005, Nešetřil initiated a systematic study of the so-called Ramsey classes of finite structures. This thesis is a contribution to the programme; we find Ramsey expansions of the primitive 3-constrained classes from Cherlin's catalogue of metrically homogeneous graphs. A key ingradient is an explicit combinatorial algorithm to fill-in…
We develop the theory of Fraïssé limits for classes of finite-dimensional multi-seminormed spaces, which are defined to be vector spaces equipped with a finite sequence of seminorms. We define a notion of a Fraïssé Fréchet space and we use the Fraïssé correspondence in this setting to obtain many examples of such spaces. This allows us to give a Fraïssé-theoretic construction of $(\mathbb{G}^ω, (\|\cdot\|_n)_{n<ω})$, the separable Fréchet space of almost universal disposition for the class of all finite-dimensional Fréchet spaces with an infinite sequence of seminorms. We then identify and pro…
We investigate properties of the ineffability and the Ramsey operator, and a common generalization of those that was introduced by the second author, with respect to higher indescribability, as introduced by the first author. This extends earlier investigations on the ineffability operator by James Baumgartner, and on the Ramsey operator by Qi Feng, by Philip Welch et al. and by the first author.
We state the Ramsey property of classes of ordered structures with closures and given local properties. This generalises many old and new results: the Nešetřil-Rödl Theorem, the author's Ramsey lift of bowtie-free graphs as well as the Ramsey Theorem for Finite Models (i.e. structures with both functions and relations) thus providing the ultimate generalisation of Structural Ramsey Theorem. We give here a more concise reformulation of recent authors paper "All those Ramsey classes (Ramsey classes with closures and forbidden homomorphisms)" and the main purpose of this paper is to show several …
We prove the Ramsey property for classes of ordered structures with closures and given local properties. This generalises earlier results: the Nešetřil-Rödl Theorem, the Ramsey property of partial orders and metric spaces as well as the authors' Ramsey lift of bowtie-free graphs. We use this framework to solve several open problems and give new examples of Ramsey classes. Among others, we find Ramsey lifts of convexly ordered $S$-metric spaces and prove the Ramsey theorem for finite models (i.e. structures with both functions and relations) thus providing the ultimate generalisation of the str…
We investigate interactions between Ramsey theory, topological dynamics, and model theory. We introduce various Ramsey-like properties for first order theories and characterize them in terms of the appropriate dynamical properties of the theories in question (such as [extreme] amenability of a theory or some properties of the associated Ellis semigroups). Then we relate them to profiniteness and triviality of the Ellis groups of first order theories. In particular, we find various criteria for [pro]finiteness and for triviality of the Ellis group of a given theory from which we obtain wide cla…
For positive integers $k < n$ such that $k$ divides $n$, let $(n)^k_{\hom}$ be the set of homogeneous $k$-partitions of $\{1, \dots, n\}$, that is, the set of partitions of $\{1, \dots, n\}$ into $k$ classes of the same cardinality. In the article "Ramsey properties of infinite measure algebras and topological dynamics of the group of measure preserving automorphisms: some results and an open problem" by Kechris, Sokic, and Todorcevic, the following question was asked: Is it true that given positive integers $k < m$ and $N$ such that $k$ divides $m$, there exists a number $n>m$ such that $m$ d…
