We describe the spectrum of a non-self-adjoint elliptic system on a finite interval. Under certain conditions we find that the eigenvalues form a discrete set and converge asymptotically at infinity to one of several straight lines. The eigenfunctions need not generate a basis of the relevant Hilbert space, and the larger eigenvalues are extremely sensitive to small perturbations of the operator. We show that the leading term in the spectral asymptotics is closely related to a certain convex polygon, and that the spectrum does not determine the operator up to similarity. Two elliptic systems which only differ in their boundary conditions may have entirely different spectral asymptotics. While our study makes no claim to generality, the results obtained will have to be incorporated into any future general theory.
We consider eigenvalue problems for elliptic operators of arbitrary order $2m$ subject to Neumann boundary conditions on bounded domains of the Euclidean $N$-dimensional space. We study the dependence of the eigenvalues upon variations of mass density and in particular we discuss the existence and characterization of upper and lower bounds under both the condition that the total mass is fixed and the condition that the $L^{\frac{N}{2m}}$-norm of the density is fixed. We highlight that the interplay between the order of the operator and the space dimension plays a crucial role in the existence …
We study the rate of convergence for (variational) eigenvalues of several non-linear problems involving oscillating weights and subject to different kinds of boundary conditions in bounded domains.
We consider second order elliptic systems of partial differential equations subject to Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We prove analyticity of the elementary symmetric functions of the eigenvalues, and compute Hadamard-type formulas for such functions. Then we provide a characterization of criticality of the domain under volume constraint, and prove that if the system is rotation invariant, then balls are critical domains for all those functions.
We consider singularly perturbed second order elliptic system in the whole space with fast oscillating coefficients. We construct the complete asymptotic expansions for the eigenvalues converging to the isolated ones of the homogenized system, as well as the complete asymptotic expansions for the associated eigenfunctions.
On a bounded Lipschitz domain we consider two selfadjoint operator realizations of the same second order elliptic differential expression subject to Robin boundary conditions, where the coefficients in the boundary conditions are functions. We prove that inequality between these functions on the boundary implies strict inequality between the eigenvalues of the two operators, provided that the inequality of the functions in the boundary conditions is strict on an arbitrarily small nonempty, open set.
We consider eigenvalue problems for general elliptic operators of arbitrary order subject to homogeneous boundary conditions on open subsets of the euclidean N-dimensional space. We prove stability results for the dependence of the eigenvalues upon variation of the mass density and we prove a maximum principle for extremum problems related to mass density perturbations which preserve the total mass.
This work is devoted to the asymptotic behavior of eigenvalues of an elliptic operator with rapidly oscillating random coefficients on a bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. A sharp convergence rate is obtained for isolated eigenvalues towards eigenvalues of the homogenized problem, as well as a quantitative two-scale expansion result for eigenfunctions. Next, a quantitative central limit theorem is established for eigenvalue fluctuations; more precisely, a pathwise characterization of eigenvalue fluctuations is obtained in terms of the so-called homogenization commutator, in par…
We study the generalized eigenvalue problem on the whole space for a class of integro-differential elliptic operators. The nonlocal operator is over a finite measure, but this has no particular structure. Some of our results even hold for singular kernels. The first part of the paper presents results concerning the existence of a principal eigenfunction. Then we present various necessary and/or sufficient conditions for the maximum principle to hold, and use these to characterize the simplicity of the principal eigenvalue.
The dependence on the domain is studied for the Dirichlet eigenvalues of an elliptic operator considered in bounded domains. Their proximity is measured by a norm of the difference of two orthogonal projectors corresponding to the reference domain and the perturbed one; this allows to compare domains that have non-smooth boundaries and different topology. The main result is an asymptotic formula in which the remainder is evaluated in terms of this quantity. As an application, the stability of eigenvalues is estimated by virtue of integrals of squares of the gradients of eigenfunctions for elli…
In this paper, we compute universal estimates of eigenvalues of a coupled system of elliptic differential equations in divergence form on a bounded domain in Euclidean space. As an application, we show an interesting case of rigidity inequalities of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian, more precisely, we consider a countable family of bounded domains in Gaussian shrinking soliton that makes the behavior of known estimates of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian invariant by a first-order perturbation of the Laplacian. We also address the Gaussian expanding soliton case in two different settings. We f…
Eigenvalue estimates for a class of elliptic differential operators in divergence form on Riemannian manifolds isometrically immersed in Euclidean space
Let $M$ be a compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold, carrying an effective and isometric action of a torus $T$, and $P_0$ an invariant elliptic classical pseudodifferential operator on $M$. In this note, we strengthen asymptotics for the equivariant (or reduced) spectral function of $P_0$ derived previously, which are already sharp in the eigenvalue aspect, to become almost sharp in the isotypic aspect. In particular, this leads to hybrid equivariant $L^p$-bounds for eigenfunctions that are almost sharp in the eigenvalue and isotypic aspect.
In this paper, we study second-order and fourth-order elliptic problems which include not only a Poisson equation in the bulk but also an inhomogeneous Laplace--Beltrami equation on the boundary of the domain. The bulk and the surface PDE are coupled by a boundary condition that is either of Dirichlet or Robin type. We point out that both the Dirichlet and the Robin type boundary condition can be handled simultaneously through our formalism without having to change the framework. Moreover, we investigate the eigenvalue problems associated with these second-order and fourth-order elliptic syste…
This paper considers how the eigenvalues of the Neumann problem for an elliptic operator depend on the domain. The proximity of two domains is measured in terms of the norm of the difference between the two resolvents corresponding to the reference domain and the perturbed domain, and the size of eigenfunctions outside the intersection of the two domains. This construction enables the possibility of comparing both nonsmooth domains and domains with different topology. An abstract framework is presented, where the main result is an asymptotic formula where the remainder is expressed in terms of…
We consider general linear non-degenerate weakly-coupled cooperative elliptic systems and study certain monotonicity properties of the generalized principal eigenvalue in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with respect to the potential. It is shown that monotonicity on the right is equivalent to the recurrence property of the twisted operator which is, in turn, equivalent to the minimal growth property at infinity of the principal eigenfunctions. The strict monotonicity property of the principal eigenvalue is shown to be equivalent with the exponential stability of the twisted operators. An equivalence between th…
In this paper the discrete eigenvalues of elliptic second order differential operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $n \in \mathbb{N}$, with singular $δ$- and $δ'$-interactions are studied. We show the self-adjointness of these operators and derive equivalent formulations for the eigenvalue problems involving boundary integral operators. These formulations are suitable for the numerical computations of the discrete eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions by boundary element methods. We provide convergence results and show numerical examples.
It is known that a matrix polynomial with unitary matrix coefficients has its eigenvalues in the annular region $\frac{1}{2} < |λ| < 2$. We prove in this short note that under certain assumptions, matrix polynomials with either doubly stochastic matrix coefficients or Schur stable matrix coefficients also have eigenvalues in similar annular regions.
We consider general second order uniformly elliptic operators subject to homogeneous boundary conditions on open sets $ϕ(Ω)$ parametrized by Lipschitz homeomorphisms $ϕ$ defined on a fixed reference domain $Ω$. Given two open sets $ϕ(Ω)$, $\tilde ϕ(Ω)$ we estimate the variation of resolvents, eigenvalues and eigenfunctions via the Sobolev norm $\|\tilde ϕ-ϕ\|_{W^{1,p}(Ω)}$ for finite values of $p$, under natural summability conditions on eigenfunctions and their gradients. We prove that such conditions are satisfied for a wide class of operators and open sets, including open sets with Lipschit…
In this work, we investigate the spectral problem $Au = λu$ where $A$ is a fractional elliptic operator involving left- and right-sided Riemann-Liouville derivatives. These operators are nonlocal and nonsymmetric, however, share certain classic elliptic properties. The eigenvalues correspond to the roots of a class of certain special functions. Compared with classic Sturm-Liouville problems, the most challenging part is to set up the framework for analyzing these nonlocal operators, which requires developing new tools. We prove the existence of the real eigenvalues, find the range for all poss…
We use the averaged variational principle introduced in a recent article on graph spectra [7] to obtain upper bounds for sums of eigenvalues of several partial differential operators of interest in geometric analysis, which are analogues of Kr{ö}ger 's bound for Neumann spectra of Laplacians on Euclidean domains [12]. Among the operators we consider are the Laplace-Beltrami operator on compact subdomains of manifolds. These estimates become more explicit and asymptotically sharp when the manifold is conformal to homogeneous spaces (here extending a result of Strichartz [21] with a simplified p…
The paper concerns the isotropic interior transmission eigenvalue (ITE) problem. This problem is not elliptic, but we show that, using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, it can be reduced to an elliptic one. This leads to the discreteness of the spectrum as well as to certain results on possible location of the transmission eigenvalues. If the index of refraction $\sqrt{n(x)}$ is real, we get a result on the existence of infinitely many positive ITEs and the Weyl type lower bound on its counting function. All the results are obtained under the assumption that $n(x)-1$ does not vanish at the boundar…
In this work, we analyse the metastability of non-reversible diffusion processes $$dX_t=\boldsymbol{b}(X_t)dt+\sqrt h\,dB_t$$ on a bounded domain $Ω$ when $\mathbf{b}$ admits the decomposition $\mathbf{b}=-(\nabla f+\mathbf{\ell})$ and $\nabla f \cdot \mathbf{\ell}=0$. In this setting, we first show that, when $h\to 0$, the principal eigenvalue of the generator of $(X_t)_{t\ge 0}$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary $\partialΩ$ of $Ω$ is exponentially close to the inverse of the mean exit time from $Ω$, uniformly in the initial conditions $X_0=x$ within the compacts of $Ω$. The …
The paper concerns the discreteness of the eigenvalues and the solvability of the interior transmission problem for anisotropic media. Conditions for the ellipticity of the problem are written explicitly, and it is shown that they do not guarantee the discreteness of the eigenvalues. Some simple sufficient conditions for the discreteness and solvability are found. They are expressed in terms of the values of the anisotropy matrix and the refraction index at the boundary of the domain. The discreteness of the eigenvalues and the solvability of the interior transmission problem are shown if a sm…
Let $D\subset R^d$ be a bounded domain and let \[ L=\frac12\nabla\cdot a\nabla +b\cdot\nabla \] %\[ %L=\frac12\sum_{i,j=1}^da_{i,j}\frac{\partial^2}{\partial x_i\partial x_j}+\sum_{i=1}^db_i\frac{\partial}{\partial x_i}, %\] be a second order elliptic operator on $D$. Let $ν$ be a probability measure on $D$. Denote by ${\mathcal L}$ the differential operator whose domain is specified by the following non-local boundary condition: $$ {\mathcal D_{\mathcal L}}=\{f\in C^2(\ol{D}): \int_D f dν= f|_{\partial D}\}, $$ and which coincides with $L$ on its domain. It is known that $\mathcal L$ possesse…
We consider uniformly elliptic operators with Dirichlet or Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions on a domain $Ω$ in ${\mathbb{R}}^N$. We consider deformations $ϕ(Ω)$ of $Ω$ obtained by means of a locally Lipschitz homeomorphism $ϕ$ and we estimate the variation of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues upon variation of $ϕ$. We prove general stability estimates without using uniform upper bounds for the gradients of the maps $ϕ$. As an application, we obtain estimates on the rate of convergence for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions when a domain with an outward cusp is approximated by a sequence of…
We study the problem of how the Floquet property manifests for periodic Schrödinger operators which are known to have multiple of asymptotic spectral solutions. The main conclusions are made for elliptic potentials, we demonstrate that for each period of the elliptic function there is a relation about the Floquet exponent and the monodromy of wave function. Among them there are two relations not explained by the classical Floquet theory. These relations produce both old and new asymptotic solutions consistent with results already known.
