We study Vassiliev invariants of links in a 3-manifold $M$ by using chord diagrams labeled by elements of the fundamental group of $M$. We construct universal Vassiliev invariants of links in $M$, where $M=P^2\times [0,1]$ is a cylinder over the real projective plane $P^2$, $M=Σ\times [0,1]$ is a cylinder over a surface $Σ$ with boundary, and $M=S^1\times S^2$. A finite covering $p:N\longrightarrow M$ induces a map $π_1(p)^*$ between labeled chord diagrams that corresponds to taking the preimage $p^{-1}(L)\subset N$ of a link $L\subset M$. The maps $p^{-1}$ and $π_1(p)^*$ intertwine the constructed universal Vassiliev invariants.
We give a generalization of the Reshetikhin-Turaev functor for tangles to get a combinatorial formula for the universal Vassiliev-Kontsevich invariant of framed oriented links which is coincident with the Kontsevich integral. The universal Vassiliev-Kontsevich invariant is constructed using the Drinfeld associator. We prove the uniqueness of the Drinfeld associator. As a corollary one gets the rationality of the Kontsevich integral. Many properties of the universal Vassiliev-Kontsevich invariant are established. Connections to quantum group invariants and to multiple zeta values are discussed.
The most general R-matrix type state sum model for link invariants is constructed. It contains in itself all R-matrix invariants and is a generating function for "universal" Vassiliev link invariants. This expression is more simple than Kontsevich's expression for the same quantity, because it is defined combinatorially and does not contain any integrals, except for an expression for "the universal Drinfeld's associator".
The notion of Vassiliev algebra in case of hanlebodies is developed. The analogues of the results of John Baez for links in handlebodies are proved. That means that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the special class of finite type invariants of links in hanlebodies and the homogeneous Markov traces on Vassiliev algebras. This approach uses the singular braid monoid and braid group in a handlebody and the generalizations of the theorem of J. Alexander and the theorem of A. A. Markov for singular links and braids and the relative version of Markov's theorem.
Khovanov homology extends to singular links via a categorified analogue of Vassiliev skein relation. In view of Vassiliev theory, the extended Khovanov homology can be seen as Vassiliev derivatives of Khovanov homology. In this paper, we develop a new method to compute the first derivative. Namely, we introduce a complex, called a crux complex, and prove that the Khovanov homologies of singular links with unique double points are homotopic to cofibers of endomorphisms on crux complexes. Since crux complexes are actually small for some links, the result enables a direct computation of the first…
We show the existence of a universal Vassiliev invariant for links in closed surface cylinders by explicit construction using configuration space integrals.
Using properties of ordered exponentials and the definition of the Drinfeld associator as a monodromy operator for the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations, we prove that the analytic and the combinatorial definitions of the universal Vassiliev invariants of links are equivalent.
The general structure of the perturbative expansion of the vacuum expectation value of a product of Wilson-loop operators is analyzed in the context of Chern-Simons gauge theory. Wilson loops are opened into Wilson lines in order to unravel the algebraic structure encoded in the group factors of the perturbative series expansion. In the process a factorization theorem is proved for Wilson lines. Wilson lines are then closed back into Wilson loops and new link invariants of finite type are defined. Integral expressions for these invariants are presented for the first three primitive ones of low…
Pulling back the weight systems associated with the exceptional Lie algebras and their standard representations by a modification of the universal Vassiliev-Kontsevich invariant yields link invariants; extending them to coloured 3-nets, we derive for each of them a skein relation.
In this note we reconsider a familiar result in Vassiliev knot theory - that the coefficients of the Alexander-Conway polynomial determine the top row of the Kontsevich integral - from the point of view of Kazuo Habiro's clasper theory. We observe that in this setting the calculation reflects the topology of the universal cyclic covering space of a claspered knot's complement.
In view of the result of Kontsevich, now often called ``the fundamental theorem of Vassiliev theory'', identifying the graded dual of the associated graded vector space to the space of Vassiliev invariants filtered by degree with the linear span of chord diagrams modulo the ``4T-relation'' (and in the unframed case, the ``1T-'' or ``isolated chord relation''), it is a problem of some interest to provide a basis for the space of chord diagrams modulo the 4T-relation. We construct the basis for the vector space spanned by chord diagrams with n chords and m distinguishable link components, modulo…
In this paper we introduce two theories of finite type invariants for framed links with fixed linking matrix. We show that these thepries are related to the theory of Vassiliev invariants of framed links. We also study the corresponding spaces of ``chord diagrams''.
We consider vector spaces H(n,l) and F(n,l) spanned by the degree-n coefficients in power series forms of the Homfly and Kauffman polynomials of links with l components. Generalizing previously known formulas, we determine the dimensions of the spaces H(n,l), F(n,l) and H(n,l)+F(n,l) for all values of n and l. Furthermore, we show that for knots the algebra generated by H(n,1)+F(n,1) (n > 0) is a polynomial algebra with dim(H(n,1)+F(n,1))-1=n+[n/2]-4 generators in degree n>3 and one generator in degrees 2 and 3.
Pulling back the weight system associated with the exceptional Lie algebra G_2 by a modification of the universal Vassiliev-Kontsevich invariant yields a link invariant; extending it to 3-nets, we derive a recursive algorithm for its evaluation.
Using elementary equalities between various cables of the unknot and the Hopf link, we prove the Wheels and Wheeling conjectures of [Bar-Natan, Garoufalidis, Rozansky and Thurston, arXiv:q-alg/9703025] and [Deligne, letter to Bar-Natan, January 1996, http://www.ma.huji.ac.il/~drorbn/Deligne/], which give, respectively, the exact Kontsevich integral of the unknot and a map intertwining two natural products on a space of diagrams. It turns out that the Wheeling map is given by the Kontsevich integral of a cut Hopf link (a bead on a wire), and its intertwining property is analogous to the computa…
We introduce the concept of `claspers,' which are surfaces in 3-manifolds with some additional structure on which surgery operations can be performed. Using claspers we define for each positive integer k an equivalence relation on links called `C_k-equivalence,' which is generated by surgery operations of a certain kind called `C_k-moves'. We prove that two knots in the 3-sphere are C_{k+1}-equivalent if and only if they have equal values of Vassiliev-Goussarov invariants of type k with values in any abelian groups. This result gives a characterization in terms of surgery operations of the inf…
This paper is an exposition of heuristics related to Witten's functional integral, relating it to Vassiliev invariants and to the Kontsevich integrals that can be used to produce Vassiliev invariants of knots and links. In particular, we give a simplified version of the appearance of the Kontsevich integrals in the perturbation expansion of the functional integral.
The universal Vassiliev-Kontsevich invariant is a functor from the category of tangles to a certain graded category of chord diagrams, compatible with the Vassiliev filtration and whose associated graded is an isomorphism. The Vassiliev filtration has a natural extension to tangles in any thickened surface $M\times I$ but the corresponding category of diagrams lacks some finiteness properties which are essential to the above construction. We suggest to overcome this obstruction by studying families of Vassiliev invariants which, roughly, are associated to finite coverings of $M$. In the case $…
We show that a variation of Milnor's $\barμ$-invariants, the so-called Campbell-Hausdorff invariants introduced recently by Stefan Papadima, are of finite type with respect to {\it marked singular links}. These link invariants are stronger than quantum invariants in the sense that they detect easily the non-invertibility of links with more than one components. It is still open whether some effectively computable knot invariants, e.g. finite type knot invariants (Vassiliev invariants), could detect the non-invertibility of knots.
In this paper we define an algebra structure on the vector space $L(Σ)$ generated by links in the manifold $Σ\times [0,1]$ where $Σ$ is an oriented surface. This algebra has a filtration and the associated graded algebra $L_{Gr}(Σ)$ is naturally a Poisson algebra. There is a Poisson algebra homomorphism from the algebra of chord diagrams $ch(Σ)$ on $Σ$ to $L_{Gr}(Σ)$. We show that multiplication in $L(Σ)$ provides a geometric way to define a deformation quantization of the algebra of chord diagrams, provided there is a universal Vassiliev invariant for links in $Σ\times [0,1]$. The quantizatio…
The usual construction of link invariants from quantum groups applied to the superalgebra D_{2 1,alpha} is shown to be trivial. One can modify this construction to get a two variable invariant. Unusually, this invariant is additive with respect to connected sum or disjoint union. This invariant contains an infinity of Vassiliev invariants that are not seen by the quantum invariants coming from Lie algebras (so neither by the colored HOMFLY-PT nor by the colored Kauffman polynomials).
We introduce an algebraic structure we call semiquandles whose axioms are derived from flat Reidemeister moves. Finite semiquandles have associated counting invariants and enhanced invariants defined for flat virtual knots and links. We also introduce singular semiquandles and virtual singular semiquandles which define invariants of flat singular virtual knots and links. As an application, we use semiquandle invariants to compare two Vassiliev invariants.
The Vassiliev-Gusarov link invariants of finite type are known to be closely related to perturbation theory for Chern-Simons theory. In order to clarify the perturbative nature of such link invariants, we introduce an algebra V_infinity containing elements g_i satisfying the usual braid group relations and elements a_i satisfying g_i - g_i^{-1} = epsilon a_i, where epsilon is a formal variable that may be regarded as measuring the failure of g_i^2 to equal 1. Topologically, the elements a_i signify crossings. We show that a large class of link invariants of finite type are in one-to-one corres…

We construct an invariant of 3-manifolds using a modification of the Kontsevich integral and Kirby's calculus. This invariant, as expected in perturbative Chern-Simon theory, takes values in the algebra of oriented 3-valent graphs. This algebra is a Hopf algebra, graded by half the number of vertices in 3-valent graphs. The degree 1 term of the invariant coincides with Casson-Walker-Lescop invariant. The degree $n$ term is constructed out of the universal Vassiliev invariant of links of degree less than or equal to $(l+1)n$ where $l$ is the number of link components.
We derive an analog of Melvin-Morton bound on the power series expansion of Jones polynomial of algebraically split links and boundary links. This allows us to produce a simple formula for the trivial connection contribution to Witten's invariant of rational homology spheres. We show that the n-th term in the 1/K expansion of the logarithm of this contribution is a finite type invariant of Ohtsuki order 3n and of at most Garoufalidis order n. This result is a manifold counterpart of the statement that n-th derivative of the Jones polynomial is Vassiliev's invariant of order n.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a weight system on multiloop chord diagrams to be obtainable from a metrized Lie algebra representation, in terms of a bound on the ranks of associated connection matrices. Here a multiloop chord diagram is a graph with directed and undirected edges so that at each vertex precisely one directed edge is entering and precisely one directed edge is leaving, and each vertex is incident with precisely one undirected edge. Weight systems on multiloop chord diagrams yield the Vassiliev invariants for knots and links. The $k$-th connection matrix of a fu…
There is a known connection between the osp(1|2n) polynomial knot invariant $J_K^n$ and the so(2n+1) knot invariant ${}_{so} J_K^n$ studied by Clark in arXiv:1509.03533 and Blumen in arXiv:0901.3232. In the rank one case, the uncolored $U_{q}(osp(1|2))$ link invariant is equal to the $U_{t^{-1}q}(sl_2)$ link invariant where $t^2=-1$. We define a skein relation similar to the Kauffman bracket, and use that to recover an oriented link invariant which coincides with Clark's uncolored osp(1|2)-link invariant. This definition also comes from the representation theory of $U_{q,π}(sl_2)$, but using d…
