We construct the crystalline fundamental group of a semi-stable variety over a field of positive characteristic using the log De Rham-Witt complex and Navarro-Aznar's derived Thom-Whitney functor. This approach gives a relatively direct comparison theorem with the De Rham fundamental group in the liftable case. Also, we get a natural weight filtration which makes the coordinate ring of the crystalline fundamental group into a mixed isocrystal when the variety is defined over a finite field. Finally, the monodromy operator on the crystalline fundamental group is used to prove a crystalline analogue of Oda's good reduction criterion for curves.
For a polynomial ring over a commutative ring of positive characteristic, we define on the associated de Rham-Witt complex a set of functions, and show that they are pseudovaluations in the sense of Davis, Langer and Zink. To achieve it, we explicitly compute products of basic elements on the complex. We also prove that the overconvergent de Rham-Witt complex can be recovered using these pseudovaluations.
In this article, we prove the comparison theorem between the relative log de Rham-Witt cohomology and the relative log crystalline cohomology for a log smooth saturated morphism of fs log schemes satisfying certain condition. Our result covers the case where the base fs log scheme is etale locally log smooth over a scheme with trivial log structure or the case where the base fs log scheme is hollow, and so it generalizes the previously known results of Matsuue. In Appendix, we prove that our relative log de Rham-Witt complex and our comparison map are compatible with those of Hyodo-Kato.
In order to study $p$-adic étale cohomology of an open subvariety $U$ of a smooth proper variety $X$ over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$, we introduce new $p$-primary torsion sheaves. It is a modification of the logarithmic de Rham-Witt sheaves of $X$ depending on effective divisors $D$ supported in $X-U$. Then we establish a perfect duality between cohomology groups of the logarithmic de Rham-Witt cohomology of $U$ and an inverse limit of those of the mentioned modified sheaves. Over a finite field, the duality can be used to study wild ramification class field theory for the open su…
For a smooth projective scheme $X$ over a ring $R$ on which $p$ is nilpotent that meets some general assumptions we prove that the crystalline cohomology is equipped with the structure of a higher display which is a relative version of Fontaine's strongly divisible lattices. Frobenius-divisibilty is induced by the Nygaard filtration on the relative de Rham-Witt complex. For a nilpotent PD-thickening $S/R$ we also consider the associated relative display and can describe it explicitly by a relative version of the Nygaard filtration on the de Rham-Witt complex associated to a lifting of $X$ over…
We define an overconvergent version of the Hyodo-Kato complex for semistable varieties $Y$ over perfect fields of positive characteristic, and prove that its hypercohomology tensored with $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers the log-rigid cohomology when $Y$ is quasi-projective. We then describe the monodromy operator using the overconvergent Hyodo-Kato complex. Finally, we show that overconvergent Hyodo-Kato cohomology agrees with log-crystalline cohomology in the projective semistable case.
We study duality theorems for the relative logarithmic de Rham-Witt sheaves on semi-stable schemes $X$ over a local ring $\mathbb{F}_q[[t]]$, where $\mathbb{F}_q$ is a finite field. As an application, we obtain a new filtration on the maximal abelian quotient $π^{\text{ab}}_1(U)$ of the étale fundamental groups $π_1(U)$ of an open subscheme $U \subseteq X$, which gives a measure of ramification along a divisor $D$ with normal crossing and $\text{Supp}(D) \subseteq X-U$. This filtration coincides with the Brylinski-Kato-Matsuda filtration in the relative dimension zero case.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective $R$-scheme, where $R$ is a smooth $\Z$-algebra. As constructed by Hesselholt, we have the absolute big de Rham-Witt complex $\WΩ^*_X$ of $X$ at our disposal. There is also a relative version $\WΩ^*_{X/R}$ with $\W(R)$-linear differential. In this paper we study the hypercohomology of the relative (big) de Rham-Witt complex after truncation with finite truncation sets $S$. We show that it is a projective $\W_S(R)$-module, provided that the de Rham cohomology is a flat $R$-module. In addition, we establish a Poincaré duality theorem.
In their paper which introduced Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology, Monsky and Washnitzer described conditions under which the definition can be adapted to give integral cohomology groups. It seems to be well-known among experts that their construction always gives well-defined integral cohomology groups, but this fact also does not appear to be explicitly written down anywhere. In this paper, we prove that the integral Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology groups are well-defined, for any nonsingular affine variety over a perfect field of characteristic p. We then compare these cohomology groups with overco…
This paper gives a new and direct construction of the multi-prime big de Rham-Witt complex which is defined for every commutative and unital ring; the original construction by the author and Madsen relied on the adjoint functor theorem and accordingly was very indirect. (The construction given here also corrects the 2-torsion which was not quite correct in the original version.) The new construction is based on the theory of modules and derivations over a lambda-ring which is developed first. The main result in this first part of the paper is that the universal derivation of a lambda-ring is g…
We provide a new formalism of de Rham--Witt complexes in the logarithmic setting. This construction generalizes a result of Bhatt--Lurie--Mathew, and agrees with those of Hyodo--Kato and Matsuue for log-smooth schemes of log-Cartier type. We then apply our formalism to obtain a more direct proof of the log crystalline comparison of A_inf-cohomology in the case of semistable reduction, which is established by Cesnavicius--Koshiwara.
Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p > 0$, $W_n = W_n(k)$. For separated $k$-schemes of finite type, we explain how rigid cohomology with compact supports can be computed as the cohomology of certain de Rham-Witt complexes with coefficients. This result generalizes the classical comparison theorem of Bloch-Illusie for proper and smooth schemes. In the proof, the key step is an extension of the Bloch-Illusie theorem to the case of cohomologies relative to $W_n$ with coefficients in a crystal that is only supposed to be flat over $W_n$.
We show that the additive higher Chow groups of regular schemes over a field induce a Zariski sheaf of pro-differential graded algebras, whose Milnor range is isomorphic to the Zariski sheaf of big de Rham-Witt complexes. This provides an explicit cycle-theoretic description of the big de Rham-Witt sheaves. Several applications are derived.
The goal of this small note is to extend a result by Christopher Davis and David Zureick-Brown on the comparison between integral Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology and overconvergent de~Rham-Witt cohomology for a smooth variety over a perfect field of positive characteristic $p$ to all cohomological degrees independent of the dimension of the base or the prime number $p$. Le but de ce travail est de prolonger un résultat de Christopher Davis et David Zureick-Brown concernant la comparaison entre la cohomologie de Monsky-Washnitzer entière et la cohomologie de de~Rham-Witt surconvergente d'une varié…
The goal of this paper is to offer a new construction of the de Rham-Witt complex of smooth varieties over perfect fields of characteristic $p>0$. We introduce a category of cochain complexes equipped with an endomorphism $F$ of underlying graded abelian groups satisfying $dF = pFd$, whose homological algebra we study in detail. To any such object satisfying an abstract analog of the Cartier isomorphism, an elementary homological process associates a generalization of the de Rham-Witt construction. Abstractly, the homological algebra can be viewed as a calculation of the fixed points of the Be…
Bloch and Esnault defined additive higher Chow groups with modulus (m+1) on the level of zero cycles over a field k, denoted by TH^n(k,n;m), n,m >0. They prove that TH^n(k,n;1) is isomorphic to the group of absolute Kaehler differentials of degree n-1 over k. In this paper we generalize their result and show that TH^n(k,n;m) is isomorphic to W_mΩ^{n-1}_k, the group of degree n-1 elements in the generalized de Rham-Witt of length m over k. This complex was defined by Hesselholt and Madsen and generalizes the p-typical de Rham-Witt complex of Bloch-Deligne-Illusie. Before we can prove this theor…
In this paper we develop a novel approach to Witt vector rings and to the (relative) de Rham Witt complex. We do this in the generality of arbitrary commutative algebras and arbitrary truncation sets. In our construction of Witt vector rings the ring structure is obvious and there is no need for universal polynomials. Moreover a natural generalization of the construction easily leads to the relative de Rham Witt complex. Our approach is based on the use of free or at least torsion free presentations of a given commutative ring $R$ and it is an important fact that the resulting objects are inde…
This PhD manuscript focuses on the study of a variation of the graded loop space construction for mixed graded derived schemes endowed with a Frobenius lift. We developed a theory of derived Frobenius lifts on a derived stack which are homotopy theoretic analogues of delta-structures for commutative rings. This graded loop space construction is the first step towards a definition of the de Rham-Witt complex for derived schemes. In this context, a loop is given by an action of the "crystalline circle", which is a formal analogue of the topological circle, endowed with its natural endomorphism g…
We prove a comparison isomorphism between the De Rham rational homotopy type of a smooth proper log variety defined over a p-adic field and the crystalline rational homotopy type of a semi-stable reduction mod p.
Recent important and powerful frameworks for the study of differential forms by Huber-Joerder and Huber-Kebekus-Kelly based on Voevodsky's h-topology have greatly simplified and unified many approaches. This article builds towards the goal of putting Illusie's de Rham-Witt complex in the same framework by exploring the h-sheafification of the rational de Rham-Witt differentials. Assuming resolution of singularities in positive characteristic one recovers a complete cohomological h-descent for all terms of the complex. We also provide unconditional h-descent for the global sections and draw the…

We answer negatively an open problem of Illusie on the DR-decomposability of the log de Rham complex of the special fiber of a semi-stable reduction over the Witt ring. We also show that $E_1$ degeneration of the Hodge to log de Rham spectral sequence does not imply DR-decomposability of semi-stable varieties.
Given a smooth formal scheme over the ring of integers of a mixed-characteristic perfectoid field, we study its $p$-adic vanishing cycles via de Rham--Witt and $q$-de Rham complexes.
Let $X$ be an algebraic curve with an action of a finite group $G$ over a field $k$. We show that if the Hodge-de Rham short exact sequence of $X$ splits $G$-equivariantly then the action of $G$ on $X$ is weakly ramified. In particular, this generalizes the result of Köck and Tait for hyperelliptic curves. We discuss also converse statements and tie this problem to lifting coverings of curves to the ring of Witt vectors of length $2$.
We study the cohomology theory and the canonical Milnor-Witt cycle module associated to a motivic spectrum. We prove that the heart of Morel-Voevodsky stable homotopy category over a perfect field (equipped with its homotopy t-structure) is equivalent to the category of Milnor-Witt cycle modules, thus generalising Déglise's thesis. As a corollary, we recover a theorem of Ananyevskiy and Neshitov and we prove that the Milnor-Witt K-theory groups are birational invariants.
This short note is extracted from Section 3 and Appendix of the paper entitled with Intersection de Rham complexes in positive characteristic by the same named authors, where an explicit infinite homotopy from a Higgs complex to the Frobenius pushforward of the corresponding de Rham complex in positive characteristic has been provided. The verification details, which are omitted therein, are provided here.
The category of finite Milnor-Witt correspondences, introduced by Calmès and Fasel, provides a new type of correspondences closer to the motivic homotopy theoretic framework than Suslin-Voevodsky's correspondences. A fundamental result of the theory of ordinary correspondences concerns homotopy invariance of sheaves with transfers, and in the present paper we address this question in the setting of Milnor-Witt correspondences. Employing techniques due to Druzhinin, Fasel-Østvær and Garkusha-Panin, we show that homotopy invariance of presheaves with Milnor-Witt transfers is preserved under Nisn…
For a Nash submersion $ϕ\colon X\to Y$, we study the complex $\mathcal{SDR}(ϕ)$ of Schwartz sections of the relative de Rham complex of $ϕ$. We define the notion of Schwartz sections of constructible sheaves on Nash manifolds and prove that $\mathcal{SDR}(ϕ)$ is homotopy equivalent to the Schwartz sections of the proper push-forward $ϕ_!\mathbb{R}_X$ of the constant sheaf $\mathbb{R}_X$. Using this equivalence, we show that $\mathcal{SDR}(ϕ)$ depends (up to homotopy equivalence) only on the homology type of the map $ϕ$. We also deduce that $\mathcal{SDR}(ϕ)$ has Hausdorff homology spaces.
In the paper we use the theory of framed correpondences to construct Milnor-Witt transfers on homotopy modules. As a consequence we identify the zeroth stable $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy sheaves of smooth varieties with the zeroth homology of corresponding MW-motivic complexes and prove that the hearts of homotopy $t$-structures on the stable $\mathbb{A}^1$-derived category and the category of Milnor-Witt motives are equivalent.
We compute the perverse delta-homotopy heart of the motivic stable homotopy category over a base scheme with a dimension function delta, rationally or after inverting the exponential characteristic in the equicharacteristic case. In order to do that, we define the notion of homological Milnor-Witt cycle modules and construct a homotopy-invariant Rost-Schmid cycle complex. Moreover, we define the category of cohomological Milnor-Witt cycle modules and show a duality result in the smooth case.
Let A be a finitely generated algebra over a field K of characteristic p >0. We introduce a subring of the ring of Witt vectors W(A). We call it the ring of overconvergent Witt vectors. We prove that on a scheme X of finite type over K the overconvergent Witt vectors are an étale sheaf. In a forthcoming paper (Annales ENS) we define an overconvergent de Rham-Witt complex on a smooth scheme X over a perfect field K whose hypercohomology is the rigid cohomology of X in the sense of Berthelot.
The strictly homotopy invariance of the associated Nisnevish sheave $\widetilde{\mathcal F}_{Nis}$ of a homotopy invariant presheave $\mathcal F$ with GW-transfers (or Witt-transfers) on the category of smooth varieties over a prefect field $k$, $char\,k \neq 2$, is proved, i.e. the isomorphism $$H^i_{Nis}(\mathbb A^1\times X,\widetilde{\mathcal F}_{Nis})\simeq H^i_{Nis}(X,\widetilde{\mathcal F}_{Nis})$$ for any $X\in Sm_k$ is obtained. This theorem is necessary for the construction of the triangulated category of GW-motives $\mathbf{DM}^{GW}(k)$ and Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^W(k)$ by the Voev…
For a smooth and proper scheme over an artinian local ring with ordinary reduction over the perfect residue field we prove - under some general assumptions - that the relative de Rham-Witt spectral sequence degenerates and the relative crystalline cohomology, equipped with its display structure arising from the Nygaard complexes, has a Hodge-Witt decomposition into a direct sum of (suitably Tate-Twisted) multiplicative displays. As examples our main results include the cases of abelian schemes, complete intersections, varieties of K3 type and some Calabi-Yau $n$-folds.
We construct a new cohomology theory for proper smooth (formal) schemes over the ring of integers of C_p. It takes values in a mixed-characteristic analogue of Dieudonne modules, which was previously defined by Fargues as a version of Breuil-Kisin modules. Notably, this cohomology theory specializes to all other known p-adic cohomology theories, such as crystalline, de Rham and etale cohomology, which allows us to prove strong integral comparison theorems. The construction of the cohomology theory relies on Faltings's almost purity theorem, along with a certain functor $Lη$ on the derived cate…
We show that the bounded derived category of regular holonomic D-modules on a smooth variety is equivalent to the homotopy catgory of compact (or constructible) modules over the motivic ring spectrum $H_{dR}$ representing algebraic de Rham cohomology. This equivalence is compatible with the six functors on both sides. This way, the classical functors in the world of D-modules, $f_! := D_Y f_* D_X, f^* := D_X f^! D_Y$ ($f: X \to Y$), are conceptually explained and embedded into a larger and more flexible framework. We also apply this equivalence to obtain a motivic t-structure on $H_{dR}$-modul…
We study the structure of the rational motivic stable homotopy category over general base schemes. Our first class of results concerns the six operations: we prove absolute purity, stability of constructible objects, and Grothendieck-Verdier duality for SH_Q. Next, we prove that SH_Q is canonically SL-oriented; we compare SH_Q with the category of rational Milnor-Witt motives; and we relate the rational bivariant A^1-theory to Chow-Witt groups. These results are derived from analogous statements for the minus part of SH[1/2].
On any Calabi-Yau manifold X one can define a certain sheaf of chiral N=2 superconformal field theories, known as the chiral de Rham complex of X. It depends only on the complex structure of X, and its local structure is described by a simple free field theory. We show that the cohomology of this sheaf can be identified with the infinite-volume limit of the half-twisted sigma-model defined by E. Witten more than a decade ago. We also show that the correlators of the half-twisted model are independent of the Kahler moduli to all orders in worldsheet perturbation theory, and that the relation to…
In arxiv:1602.04254, we have defined polynomial Witt vectors functor from vector spaces over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$ to abelian groups. In this paper, we use polynomial Witt vectors to construct a functorial Hochschild-Witt complex $WCH_*(A)$ for any associative unital $k$-algebra $A$, with homology groups $WHH_*(A)$. We prove that the group $WHH_0(A)$ coincides with the group of non-commutative Witt vectors defined by Hesselholt, while if $A$ is commutative, finitely generated, and smooth, the groups $WHH_i(A)$ are naturally identified with the terms $WΩ^i_A$ of the…
