Let M be a compact irreducible Hermitian symmetric space and write M=G/K, with G the group of holomorphic isometries of M and K the stability group of the point of 0 in M. We determine the maximal dimension of a complex projective space embedded in M as a totally geodesic submanifold.
We show that an equivariantly embedded Hermitian symmetric space in a projective space, which contains neither a projective space nor a hyperquadric as a component, is characterized by their fundamental forms as a local submanifold of the projective space. Using some invariant-theoretic properties of the fundamental forms and Se-ashi's work on linear differential equations of finite type, we reduce the proof to the vanishing of certain Spencer cohomology groups. The vanishing is checked by Kostant's harmonic theory for Lie algebra cohomology.
Any set of $σ$-Hermitian matrices of size $n \times n$ over a field with involution $σ$ gives rise to a projective line in the sense of ring geometry and a projective space in the sense of matrix geometry. It is shown that the two concepts are based upon the same set of points, up to some notational differences.
We investigate Hermitian metrics on the anti-canonical bundle of a rational surface obtained by blowing up the projective plane at nine points. For that purpose, we pose a modified variant of an argument made by Ueda on the complex analytic structure of a neighborhood of a subvariety by considering the deformation of the complex structure.
Given a smooth complex projective variety X and a smooth divisor D on X, we prove the existence of Hermitian-Einstein connections, with respect to a Poincaré-type metric on X - D, on polystable parabolic principal Higgs bundles with parabolic structure over D, satisfying certain conditions on its restriction to D.
In this paper we study the relationship between three compactifications of the moduli space of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections on a fixed Hermitian vector bundle over a projective algebraic manifold of arbitrary dimension. Via the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem, this space is analytically isomorphic to the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles, and as such it admits an algebraic compactification by Gieseker-Maruyama semistable torsion-free sheaves. A recent construction due to the first and third authors gives another compactification as a moduli space of slope semistable sheaves…
Let X be a smooth complex projective curve and S a finite subset of X. We show that an orthogonal or symplectic parabolic Higgs bundle on X with parabolic structure over S admits a Hermitian-Einstein connection if and only if it is polystable.
These are lecture notes on the rigidity of submanifolds of projective space "resembling" compact Hermitian symmetric spaces in their homogeneous embeddings. Recent results are surveyed, along with their classical predecessors. The notes include an introduction to moving frames in projective geometry, an exposition of the Hwang-Yamaguchi ridgidity theorem and a new variant of the Hwang-Yamaguchi theorem.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over $\mathbb C$. We prove that a twisted Higgs vector bundle $(\calE\, ,θ)$ on $X$ admits an Einstein--Hermitian connection if and only if $(\calE\, ,θ)$ is polystable. A similar result for twisted vector bundles (no Higgs fields) was proved by S. Wang in \cite{Wa}. Our approach is simpler.
The main objective of the present paper is to set up the theoretical basis and the language needed to deal with the problem of direct images of hermitian vector bundles for projective non-necessarily smooth morphisms. To this end, we first define hermitian structures on the objects of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth complex variety. Secondly we extend the theory of Bott-Chern classes to these hermitian structures. Finally we introduce the category $\oSm_{\ast/\CC}$ whose morphisms are projective morphisms with a hermitian structure on the relative tangent complex.
We introduce a model for Hermitian holormorphic Deligne cohomology on a projective algebraic manifold which allows to incorporate singular hermitian structures along a normal crossing divisor. In the case of a projective curve, the cup-product in cohomology is shown to correspond to a generalization of the Deligne pairing to line bundles with "good" hermitian metrics in the sense of Mumford and others. A particular case is that of the tangent bundle of the curve twisted by the negative of the singularity divisor of a hyperbolic metric: its cup square (corrected by the total area) is shown to b…
We introduce a new class of canonical AZD's (called the supercanonical AZD's) on the canonical bundles of smooth projective varieties with pseudoeffective canonical classes. We study the variation of the supercanonical AZD $\hat{h}_{can}$ under projective deformations and give a new proof of the invariance of plurigenera.
The mirror of a projective toric manifold $X_Σ$ is given by a Landau-Ginzburg model $(Y,W)$. We introduce a class of Lagrangian submanifolds in $(Y,W)$ and show that, under the SYZ mirror transformation, they can be transformed to torus-invariant hermitian metrics on holomorphic line bundles over $X_Σ$. Through this geometric correspondence, we also identify the mirrors of Hermitian-Einstein metrics, which are given by distinguished Lagrangian sections whose potentials satisfy certain Laplace-type equations.
We give a minimal list of inequalities characterizing the possible eigenvalues of a set of Hermitian matrices with positive semidefinite sum of bounded rank. This answers a question of A. Barvinok.
Let $M$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective variety equipped with an action of a compact Lie group $G$, and let $({\mathcal L},h)$ be a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$. Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$, we construct a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle $(L\,,H)$ on $X\times M$ (the action of $G$ on $X$ is trivial), such that the corresponding Quillen determinant line bundle $({\mathcal Q}, h_Q)$, which is a $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$, is isomorphic to the given $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian lin…
In this paper, we show that if the tangent bundle of a smooth projective variety is strictly nef, then it is isomorphic to a projective space; if a projective variety $X^n$ $(n>4)$ has strictly nef $Λ^2 TX$, then it is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^n$ or quadric $\mathbb{Q}^n$. We also prove that on elliptic curves, strictly nef vector bundles are ample, whereas there exist Hermitian flat and strictly nef vector bundles on any smooth curve with genus $g\geq 2$.
A $\mathbb{C}^{*}$-action on a projective variety $X$ is said to be of Euler type at a nonsingular fixed point $x$ if the isotropy action of $\mathbb{C}^{*}$ on $T_{x}X$ is by scalar multiplication. In this paper, it's proven that a smooth projective variety of Picard number one $X$ is isomorphic to an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space of tube type if and only if for a general pair of points $x,y$ on $X$, there exists a $\mathbb{C}^{*}$-action on $X$ which is of Euler type at $x$ and its inverse action is of Euler type at $y$.
We study projective homogeneous varieties under an action of a projective unitary group (of outer type). We are especially interested in the case of (unitary) grassmannians of totally isotropic subspaces of a hermitian form over a field, the main result saying that these grassmannians are 2-incompressible if the hermitian form is generic. Applications to orthogonal grassmannians are provided.
In this note, we give an overview of a new technique for studying Brill--Noether curves in projective space via degeneration. In particular, we give a roadmap to the proof of the Maximal Rank Conjecture.
An almost Fano bundle is a vector bundle on a smooth projective variety that its projectivization is an almost Fano variety. In this paper, we prove that almost Fano bundles exist only on almost Fano manifolds and study rank 2 almost Fano bundles over projective spaces.
Let q be a power of a prime integer p, and let X be a Hermitian variety of degree q+1 in the n-dimensional projective space. We count the number of rational normal curves that are tangent to X at distinct q+1 points with intersection multiplicity n. This generalizes a result of B. Segre on the permutable pairs of a Hermitian curve and a smooth conic.
Hartshorne's conjecture about vector bundles on projective space states that any rank 2 vector bundle on n-dimensional projective space splits as soon as n is at least 7. Klyachko has shown that Hartshorne's conjecture is true when the vector bundles are torus equivariant. Moreover, recent work of Ilten and Süss generalizes Klyachko's work to the case of a smaller rank torus action on projective space. In this note we give a new, direct proof that torus rank 2 bundles split that avoids a description of the category of torus equivariant vector bundles.
For a plane curve, a point in the projective plane is said to be Galois when the point projection induces a Galois extension of function fields. We give a new characterization of a Fermat curve whose degree minus one is a power of $p$ in characteristic $p>2$, which is sometimes called Hermitian, by the number of Galois points lying on the curve.
Let X be a smooth complex projective variety with basepoint x. We prove that every rigid integral irreducible representation $π_1(X,x)\to SL (3,{\mathbb C})$ is of geometric origin, i.e., it comes from some family of smooth projective varieties. This partially generalizes an earlier result by K. Corlette and the second author in the rank 2 case and answers one of their questions.
I show that any complex manifold that resembles a rank two compact Hermitian symmetric space (other than a quadric hypersurface) to order two at a general point must be an open subset of such a space.
It has been proved by various authors that a normalized, 1-Buchsbaum rank 2 vector bundle on P3 is a nullcorrelation bundle, while a normalized, 2-Buchsbaum rank 2 vector bundle on P3 is an instanton bundle of charge 2. We find that the same is not true for 3-Buchsbaum rank 2 vector bundles on P3, and propose a conjecture regarding the classification of such objects.
We give a complete classification of semistable rank two sheaves on three-dimensional projective space with maximal third Chern character. This implies an explicit description of their moduli spaces. As an open subset they contain rank two reflexive sheaves with maximal number of singularities. These spaces are irreducible, and apart from a single special case, they are also smooth. This extends a result by Okonek and Spindler to all missing cases and gives a new proof of their result. The key technical ingredient is variation of stability in the derived category.
Let $F\subseteq\mathbb P ^{a+1}$ be a non-degenerate $K3$ surface of degree $2a$, where $a\ge2$. In this paper we deal with Ulrich bundles on $F$ of rank $2$. We deal with their stability and we construct $K3$ surfaces endowed with families of non-special Ulrich bundles of rank $2$ for each $a\ge2$.
In the previous paper, we established an elementary bound for numbers of points of surfaces in the projective $3$-space over ${\Bbb F}_q$. In this paper, we give the complete list of surfaces that attain the elementary bound. Precisely those surfaces are the hyperbolic surface, the nonsingular Hermitian surface, and the surface of minimum degree containing all ${\Bbb F}_q$-points of the $3$-space.
Let S be a smooth, projective surface of Picard rank 1 and very ample generator embedding S into P^n. Let C be a smooth curve in O(m) for m \geq 5. We prove that any base-point free, complete g^r_d on C for r\in\{1,2\} and d small enough is cut out by a hyperplane section restricted to a multisecant (n-r-1)-plane.
The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of large complete subvarieties in moduli spaces of rank two stable sheaves with arbitrary $c_1$ and sufficiently large $c_2$ on algebraic surfaces. Then we study the restriction of these sheaves to curves of high degree embedded in the surface. In the final section we gives a relation with the spin strata defined by Pidstrigach and Tyurin.
Symplectic instanton vector bundles on the projective space $\mathbb{P}^3$ constitute a natural generalization of mathematical instantons of rank 2. We study the moduli space $I_{n,r}$ of rank-$2r$ symplectic instanton vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $r\ge2$ and second Chern class $n\ge r,\ n\equiv r({\rm mod}2)$. We give an explicit construction of an irreducible component $I^*_{n,r}$ of this space for each such value of $n$ and show that $I^*_{n,r}$ has the expected dimension $4n(r+1)-r(2r+1)$.
We present a new family of monads whose cohomology is a stable rank two vector bundle on $\PP$. We also study the irreducibility and smoothness together with a geometrical description of some of these families. Such facts are used to prove that the moduli space of stable rank two vector bundles of zero first Chern class and second Chern class equal to 5 has exactly three irreducible components.
Let $X$ be a normal projective variety of dimension $n$ and $G$ an abelian group of automorphisms such that all elements of $G\setminus \{\mathrm{id}\}$ are of positive entropy. Dinh and Sibony showed that $G$ is actually free abelian of rank $\le n - 1$. The maximal rank case has been well understood by De-Qi Zhang. We aim to characterize the pair $(X, G)$ such that $\mathrm{rank} G = n - 2$.
Let $X$ be a complex projective variety defined over $\mathbb R$. Recently, Bernardi and the first author introduced the notion of admissible rank with respect to $X$. This rank takes into account only decompositions that are stable under complex conjugation. Such a decomposition carries a label, i.e., a pair of integers recording the cardinality of its totally real part. We study basic properties of admissible ranks for varieties, along with special examples of curves; for instance, for rational normal curves admissible and complex ranks coincide. Along the way, we introduce the scheme theore…
Let $X(\mathbb {C})\subset \mathbb {P}^r(\mathbb {C})$ be an integral non-degenerate variety defined over $\mathbb {R}$. For any $q\in \mathbb {P}^r(\mathbb {R})$ we study the existence of $S\subset X(\mathbb {C})$ with small cardinality, invariant for the complex conjugation and with $q$ contained in the real linear space spanned by $S$. We discuss the advantages of these additive decompositions with respect to the $X(\mathbb {R})$-rank, i.e. the rank of $q$ with respect to $X(\mathbb {R})$. We describe the case of hypersurfaces and Veronese varieties.
We study the moduli space of logarithmic connections of rank 2 on the Riemann sphere minus n points with fixed spectral data. There are two natural Lagrangian maps: one towards apparent singularities of the associated fuchsian scalar equation, and another one towards moduli of parabolic bundles. We show that these are transversal and dual to each other. In case n=5, we recover the beautiful geometry of Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4.
Using classical results from Hodge theory and more contemporary ones valid for complex projective varieties with Kawamata log terminal (klt) singularities, we deduce necessary and sufficient conditions for such varieties to be uniformized by each of the four irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces of non compact type. We also deduce necessary and sufficient conditions for uniformization by a polydisk, which generalizes a classical result of Simpson.
We study singular Hermitian metrics on vector bundles. There are two main results in this paper. The first one is on the coherence of the higher rank analogue of multiplier ideals for singular Hermitian metrics defined by global sections. As an application, we show the coherence of the multiplier ideal of some positively curved singular Hermitian metrics whose standard approximations are not Nakano semipositive. The aim of the second main result is to determine all negatively curved singular Hermitian metrics on certain type of vector bundles, for example, certain rank 2 bundles on elliptic cu…
The main goal of this article is to relate asymptotic geometric properties on a tower of coverings of a non-compact Kähler manifold of finite volume with reasonable geometric assumptions to its universal covering. Applicable examples include moduli spaces of hyperbolic punctured Riemann surfaces and Hermitian locally symmetric spaces of finite volume.
We propose a three-step program for the classification of stable rank 2 bundles on the projective space $\mathbb{P}^3$ inspired by an article by Hartshorne and Rao. While this classification program has been successfully completed for stable rank 2 bundles with even determinant and $c_2\le5$, much less is known for bundles with odd determinant. After revising the known facts about these objects, we list all possible spectra and minimal monads for stable rank 2 bundles with odd determinant and $c_2\le8$. We provide a full classification of all bundles with positive minimal monads, provide a neg…
We show that if a homogeneous polynomial $f$ in $n$ variables has Waring rank $n+1$, then the corresponding projective hypersurface $f=0$ has at most isolated singularities, and the type of these singularities is completely determined by the combinatorics of a hyperplane arrangement naturally associated with the Waring decomposition of $f$. We also discuss the relation between the Waring rank and the type of singularities on a plane curve, when this curve is defined by the suspension of a binary form, or when the Waring rank is 5.
Let P^n be the projective space of dimension n on an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and F be the image of the Segre embedding of P^1xP^1xP^1 inside P^7. In the present paper we deal with the moduli spaces of locally free sheaves E on F of rank 2 with h^i(F,E(t))=0 for i=1,2 and each integer t.
We introduce a generalized notion of Schwarzenberger bundle on the projective space. Associated to this more general definition, we give an ad-hoc notion of jumping subspaces of a Steiner bundle on ${\Bbb P^n}$ (which in rank $n$ coincides with the notion of unstable hyperplane introduced by Vallès, Ancona and Ottaviani). For the set of jumping hyperplanes, we find a sharp bound for its dimension. We also classify those Steiner bundles whose set of jumping hyperplanes have maximal dimension and prove that they are generalized Schwarzenberger bundles.
We study the $p$-rank stratification of the moduli space of cyclic degree $\ell$ covers of the projective line in characteristic $p$ for distinct primes $p$ and $\ell$. The main result is about the intersection of the $p$-rank $0$ stratum with the boundary of the moduli space of curves. When $\ell=3$ and $p \equiv 2 \bmod 3$ is an odd prime, we prove that there exists a smooth trielliptic curve in characteristic $p$, with every genus $g$, signature type $(r,s)$ and $p$-rank $f$ satisfying the clear necessary conditions.
In this paper we improve the known bound for the $X$-rank $R_{X}(P)$ of an element $P\in {\mathbb{P}}^N$ in the case in which $X\subset {\mathbb P}^n$ is a projective variety obtained as a linear projection from a general $v$-dimensional subspace $V\subset {\mathbb P}^{n+v}$. Then, if $X\subset {\mathbb P}^n$ is a curve obtained from a projection of a rational normal curve $C\subset {\mathbb P}^{n+1}$ from a point $O\subset {\mathbb P}^{n+1}$, we are able to describe the precise value of the $X$-rank for those points $P\in {\mathbb P}^n$ such that $R_{X}(P)\leq R_{C}(O)-1$ and to improve the g…
Given a projective variety X defined over a finite field, the zeta function of divisors attempts to count all irreducible, codimension one subvarieties of X, each measured by their projective degree. When the dimension of X is greater than one, this is a purely p-adic function, convergent on the open unit disk. Four conjectures are expected to hold, the first of which is p-adic meromorphic continuation to all of C_p. When the divisor class group (divisors modulo linear equivalence) of X has rank one, then all four conjectures are known to be true. In this paper, we discuss the higher rank case…
We study the projective geometry of homogeneous varieties $X= G/P\subset P(V)$, where $G$ is a complex simple Lie group, $P$ is a maximal parabolic subgroup and $V$ is the minimal $G$-module associated to $P$. Our study began with the observation that Freudenthal's magic chart could be derived from Zak's theorem on Severi varieties and standard geometric constructions. Our attempt to understand this observation led us to discover further connections between projective geometry and representation theory. Among other things, we calculate the variety of tangent directions to lines on $X$ through …
