We associate, to each continuous, solvable C-representation of G of GO(4)-type, an automorphic form P of GL(4)/F with the same L-function. As a consequence we exhibit an infinite class of primitive, 16-dimensional representations for which the Artin conjecture holds.

We classify the possibilities for the fixed field of the kernel of an irreducible three-dimensional Artin representation of $\Q$ with solvable image ramified at one prime by using the classification of the finite irreducible subgroups of $\PGL_3(\C)$. This allows us to bound the number of such representations with given Artin conductor.
We extend the modularity lifting result of the arXiv:1111.2804 to allow Galois representations with some ramification at p. We also prove modularity mod 2 and 5 of certain Galois representations. We use these results to prove many new cases of the strong Artin conjecture over totally real fields in which 5 is unramified. As an ingredient of the proof, we provide a general result on the automatic analytic continuation of overconvergent p-adic Hilbert modular forms of finite slope which substantially generalizes a similar result in arXiv:1111.2804.

We show that an infinite family of odd complex 2-dimensional Galois representations ramified at 5 having nonsolvable projective image are modular, thereby verifying Artin's conjecture for a new case of examples. Such a family contains the original example studied by Buhler. In the process, we prove that an infinite family of residually modular Galois representations are modular by studying $Λ$-adic Hecke algebras.

We establish some new cases of Artin's conjecture. Our results apply to Galois representations over $\Q$ with image $S_5$ satisfying certain local hypotheses, the most important of which is that complex conjugation is conjugate to $(12)(34)$. In fact, we prove the stronger claim conjectured by Langlands that these representations are automorphic. Let $p>2$ be prime, and let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified. We give a sufficient criterion for a mod $p$ Galois representation to arise from a mod $p$ Hilbert modular form of parallel weight one, by proving a "companion forms" theorem in this case. The techniques used are a mixture of modularity lifting theorems and geometric methods. As an application, we show that Serre's conjecture for $F$ implies Artin's conjecture for totally odd two-dimensional representations over $F$.
