We show that a real rational (over $\C$) surfaces are quasi-simple, i.e., that such a surface is determined up to deformation in the class of real surfaces by the topological type of its real structure.
We study extremality properties of covering families of rational curves on projective varieties. Among others, we show that on a normal and Q-factorial projective variety of dimension at most 4, every covering and quasi-unsplit family of rational curves generates a geometric extremal ray of the Mori cone.
Let X be a complex, rationally connected, projective manifold. We show that X admits a modification X' that contains a quasi-line, ie a smooth rational curve whose normal bundle is a direct sum of copies of O_{P^1}(1). For manifolds containing quasi-lines, a sufficient condition of rationality is exploited: There is a unique quasi-line from a given family passing through two general points. We define a numerical birational invariant, e(X), and prove that X is rational if and only if e(X)=1. If X is rational, there is a modification X' which is strongly-rational We prove that strongly-rational …
We prove analogues of several well-known results concerning rational morphisms between quadrics for the class of so-called quasilinear $p$-hypersurfaces. These hypersurfaces are nowhere smooth over the base field, so many of the geometric methods which have been successfully applied to the study of projective homogeneous varieties over fields cannot be used. We are therefore forced to take an alternative approach, which is partly facilitated by the appearance of several non-traditional features in the study of these objects from an algebraic perspective. Our main results were previously known …
We study the groups of automorphisms of rational algebraic surfaces that admit a relatively minimal pencil of curves of arithmetic genus one over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. In particular, we classify such surfaces that admit non-trivial automorphisms that act trivially on the Picard group. As an application, we classify classical Enriques surfaces in characteristic $2$ that admit non-trivial numerically trivial automorphisms.
If a smooth, geometrically rational surface over a finite field is not rational over that field, then over some finite extension of that field the Brauer group of the surface is nonzero. In particular such a surface is not stably rational. This is a special case of a general statement about geometrically rational surfaces which split over a cyclic extension of their field of definition.
We start by constructing a new root system for rational triple singularities and determine the number of roots for each rational triple singularity. Then we show that, for each root, we obtain a linear free divisor. So we obtain a new family of linear free divisors. This gives the converse part of an existing theorem which says, by using the quiver representation, that linear free divisors come from a tree. We prove that our construction is independent of the orientation on the rational triple trees. Furthermore, we deduce that linear free divisors defined by rational triple quivers satisfy th…
The main result is that a quasi-projective surface has negative log Kodaira dimension (i.e. no log pluricanonical sections) iff it is dominated by images of the affine line. This follows from our main intermediate result, that the smooth locus of a log Fano surface is rationally connected. We also give a classification of all but a bounded family of rank one log del Pezzo surfaces.
In this paper the notion of rational simple connectedness for the quintic Fano threefold $V_5\subset \mathbb{P}^6$ is studied and unirationality of the moduli spaces $\overline{M}_{0,0}^{\text{bir}}(V_5,d)$, with $d \ge 1$, is proved. Many further unirationality results for special moduli spaces of rational curves on quadric hypersurfaces and del Pezzo surfaces are obtained via explicit birational methods.
The Nash problem on arcs for normal surface singularities states that there are as many arc families on a germ (S,O) of a singular surface as there are essential divisors over (S,O). It is known that this problem can be reduced to the study of quasi-rational singularities. In this paper we give a positive answer to the Nash problem for a family of non-rational quasi-rational hypersurfaces. The same method is applied to answer positively to this problem in the case of E_6 and E_7 type singularities, and to provide new proof in the case of D_n, n> =4, type singularities.
By the famous ADE classification rational double points are simple. Rational triple points are also simple. We conjecture that the simple normal surface singularities are exactly those rational singularities, whose resolution graph can be obtained from the graph of a rational double point or rational triple point by making (some) vertex weights more negative. For rational singularities we show one direction in general, and the other direction (simpleness) within the special classes of rational quadruple points and of sandwiched singularities.
We classify two-variable polynomials which are rational of simple type. These are precisely the two-variable polynomials with trivial homological monodromy.
Let X be a projective manifold containing a quasi-line l. An important difference between quasi-lines and lines in the projective space is that in general there is more than one quasi-line passing through two given general points. In this paper we use this feature to construct an algebraic foliation associated to a family of quasi-lines. We prove that if the singular locus of this foliation is not too large, it induces a rational fibration on X that maps the general leaf of the foliation onto a quasi-line in a rational variety.
In this paper, using a generalization of the notion of Prym variety for covers of quasi-projective varieties, we prove a structure theorem for the Mordell-Weil group of the abelian varieties over function fields that are twists of Abelian varieties by Galois covers of irreducible quasi-projective varieties. In particular, the resutls we obtain contribute in the construction of Jacobians (of covers of the projective line) of high rank.
We determine the Newton trees of the rational polynomials of simple type, thus filling a gap in the proof of the classification of these polynomials given by Neumann and Norbury.
In this paper we show that if two central simple $k$-algebras generate the same cyclic subgroup in $\mathrm{Br}(k)$, then there are rational maps between varieties associated to these algebras, such as Brauer--Severi varieties, norm hypersurfaces and symmetric powers. In some cases we even have rational embeddings. We also relate the obtained results to the Amitsur conjecture.
We investigate configurations of rational double points with the total Milnor number 21 on supersingular $K3$ surfaces. The complete list of possible configurations is given. As an application, we also give the complete list of extremal (quasi-)elliptic fibrations on supersingular $K3$ surfaces.
Let $X$ be any rational surface. We construct a tilting bundle $T$ on $X$. Moreover, we can choose $T$ in such way that its endomorphism algebra is quasi-hereditary. In particular, the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on $X$ is equivalent to the bounded derived category of finitely generated modules over a finite dimensional quasi-hereditary algebra $A$. The construction starts with a full exceptional sequence of line bundles on $X$ and uses universal extensions. If $X$ is any smooth projective variety with a full exceptional sequence of coherent sheaves (or vector bundles, or even…
A class of rational functions characterized by some wonderful properties is studied. The properties that identify this class include simple algebra (their inverses can be expressed in radicals), simple topology (the total space of the minimal Galois covering dominating them has genus 0 or 1) and simple local topol- ogy (branching data). Explicit formulae for these functions are obtained as well as their classification up to different equivalence relations.
We give an algebro-geometric classification of smooth real affine algebraic surfaces endowed with an effective action of the real algebraic circle group $\mathbb{S}^1$ up to equivariant isomorphisms. As an application, we show that every compact differentiable surface endowed with an action of the circle $S^1$ admits a unique smooth rational real quasi-projective model up to $\mathbb{S}^1$-equivariant birational diffeomorphism.
We investigate global properties of the mappings entering the description of symmetries of integrable spin and vertex models, by exploiting their nature of birational transformations of projective spaces. We give an algorithmic analysis of the structure of invariants of such mappings. We discuss some characteristic conditions for their (quasi)--integrability, and in particular its links with their singularities (in the 2--plane). Finally, we describe some of their properties {\it qua\/} dynamical systems, making contact with Arnol'd's notion of complexity, and exemplify remarkable behaviours.
Given a morphism between smooth projective varieties $f: W \to X$, we study whether $f$-relatively free rational curves imply the existence of $f$-relatively very free rational curves. The answer is shown to be positive when the fibers of the map $f$ have Picard number 1 and a further smoothness assumption is imposed. The main application is when $X \subset \PP^n$ is a smooth complete intersection of type $(d_1, ..., d_c)$ and $\sum d_i^2 \leq n$. In this case, we take $W$ to be the space of pointed lines contained in $X$ and the positive answer to the question implies that $X$ contains very t…
We call complex quasifold of dimension k a space that is locally isomorphic to the quotient of an open subset of the space C^k by the holomorphic action of a discrete group; the analogue of a complex torus in this setting is called a complex quasitorus. We associate to each simple polytope, rational or not, a family of complex quasifolds having same dimension as the polytope, each containing a dense open orbit for the action of a suitable complex quasitorus. We show that each of these spaces M is diffeomorphic to one of the symplectic quasifolds defined in http://arXiv.org/abs/math:SG/9904179,…
The Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polytope $P$ is a fundamental invariant counting lattice points in integer dilates of $P$. The quasi-period of this quasi-polynomial divides the denominator of $P$ but is not always equal to it: this situation is called quasi-period collapse. Polytopes experiencing quasi-period collapse appear widely across algebra and geometry, and yet the phenomenon remains largely mysterious. Using techniques from algebraic geometry - specifically the $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein deformation theory of orbifold del Pezzo surfaces - we explain quasi-period collapse for ra…
We prove Manin's conjecture concerning the distribution of rational points of bounded height, and its refinement by Peyre, for wonderful compactifications of semi-simple algebraic groups over number fields. The proof proceeds via the study of the associated height zeta function and its spectral expansion.
A complex projective manifold is rationally connected, resp. rationally simply connected, if finite subsets are connected by a rational curve, resp. the spaces parameterizing these connecting rational curves are themselves rationally connected. We prove that a projective scheme over a global function field with vanishing "elementary obstruction" has a rational point if it deforms to a rationally simply connected variety in characteristic 0. This gives new, uniform proofs over these fields of the Period-Index Theorem, the quasi-split case of Serre's "Conjecture II", and Lang's $C_2$ property.
We study the problem of counting real simple rational functions $φ$ with prescribed ramification data (i.e. a particular class of oriented real Hurwitz numbers of genus $0$). We introduce a signed count of such functions that is invariant under change of the branch locus, thus providing a lower bound for the actual count (which does depend on such change). We prove (non-)vanishing theorems for these signed counts and study their asymptotic growth when adding further simple branch points. The approach is based on the works of Itenberg and Zvonkine (arXiv:1609.05219) which treat the polynomial c…
Given a klt singularity $x\in (X, D)$, we show that a quasi-monomial valuation $v$ with a finitely generated associated graded ring is the minimizer of the normalized volume function $\widehat{\rm vol}_{(X,D),x}$, if and only if $v$ induces a degeneration to a K-semistable log Fano cone singularity. Moreover, such a minimizer is unique among all quasi-monomial valuations up to rescaling. As a consequence, we prove that for a klt singularity $x\in X$ on the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of Kähler-Einstein Fano manifolds, the intermediate K-semistable cone associated to its metric tangent cone is uniqu…
