Let $G$ be a simply connected semi-simple complex algebraic group. Fix a maximal torus $T$ and a Borel subgroup $B$ such that $T\subset B\subset G$. Let $W$ the Weyl group of $G$ relative to $T$. For any $w$ in $W$, let $X_w=\bar {BwB/B}$ denote the Schubert variety corresponding to $w$. This talk is concerned with the following problem : Is there a flat family over Spec${\bf C}[t]$, such that the general fiber is $X_w$ and the special fiber is a toric variety? Our approach of the problem is based on the canonical/global base of Lusztig/Kashiwara and the so-called string parametrization of this base studied by P. Littelmann and made precise by A. Berenstein and A. Zelevinsky. Fix $w$ in $W$ and let $P^+$ be the semigroup of dominant weights. For all $λ$ in $P^+$, let ${\cal L}_λ$ be the line bundle on $G/B$ corresponding to $λ$. Then, the direct sum of global sections $R_w:=\bigoplus_{λ\in P^+}H^0(X_w,{\cal L}_λ)$ carries a natural structure of $P^+$-graded ${\bf C}$-algebra. Moreover, there exists a natural action of $T$ on $R_w$. Our principal result can be stated as follows : There exists a filtration $({\cal F}_m^w)_{m\in{\bf N}}$ of $R_w$ such that (i) for all $m$ in ${\bf N}$, ${\cal F}_m^w$ is compatible with the $P^+$-grading of $R_w$, (ii) for all $m$ in ${\bf N}$, ${\cal F}_m^w$ is compatible with the action of $T$, (iii) the associated graded algebra is the ${\bf C}$-algebra of the semigroup of integral points in a rational convex polyhedral cone. Equations for this cone were obtained by A. Berenstein and A. Zelevinski from $\tilde w_0$-trails in fundamental Weyl modules of the Langlands dual of $G$. By standard arguments, the previous theorem gives a positive answer to the Degeneration Problem.
We describe the effect of Feigin's flat degeneration of the type $\textrm{A}$ flag variety on its Schubert varieties. In particular, we study when they stay irreducible and in several cases we are able to encode reducibility of the degenerations in terms of symmetric group combinatorics. As a side result, we obtain an identification of some Schubert varieties with Richardson varieties in higher rank partial flag varieties.
In recent years PBW degenerations of Demazure modules and Schubert varieties were defined and studied in several papers. Various interesting properties (such as these PBW degenerations embedding naturally into the corresponding degenerate representations and flag varieties) were obtained in type $\mathrm A$ but only with restrictions on the Weyl group element or the highest weight. We show that these properties cannot hold in full generality due to the following issue with the definition. The degenerate variety depends on the highest weight used to define it and not only on its Weyl group stab…
We study the algebra of Weyl modules in types $A$ and $C$ using the methods of arcs over toric degenerations and functional realization of dual space. We compute the generators and relations of this algebra and construct its basis.
In this thesis we study toric degenerations of projective varieties. We compare different constructions to understand how and why they are related as s first step towards developing a global framework. In focus are toric degenerations obtained from representation theory, tropical geometry and cluster algebras. Often those rely on valuations and the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies. Toric degenerations can be seen as a combinatorial shadow of the original objects. The goal is therefore to understand why the different theories are so closely related, by understanding the toric degenerations they…
We compute toric degenerations arising from the tropicalization of the full flag varieties $\mathcal{F}\ell_4$ and $\mathcal{F}\ell_5$ embedded in a product of Grassmannians. For $\mathcal{F}\ell_4$ and $\mathcal{F}\ell_5$ we compare toric degenerations arising from string polytopes and the FFLV polytope with those obtained from the tropicalization of the flag varieties. We also present a general procedure to find toric degenerations in the cases where the initial ideal arising from a cone of the tropicalization of a variety is not prime.
We present a review on the recently discovered link between the Lie theory, the theory of quiver Grassmannians, and various degenerations of flag varieties. Our starting point is the induced Poincaré--Birkhoff--Witt filtration on the highest weight representations and the corresponding PBW degenerate flag varieties.
For a given permutation $π\in S_N$, Fulton proves that the matrix Schubert variety $\overline{X_π} \cong Y_π \times \mathbb{C}^q$ can be defined via certain rank conditions encoded in the Rothe diagram of $π$. In the case where $Y_π:=\text{TV}(σ_π)$ is toric (with respect to a $(\mathbb{C}^*)^{2N-1}$ action), we show that it can be described as an edge ideal of a bipartite graph $G^π$. We characterize the lower dimensional faces of the associated so-called edge cone $σ_π$ explicitly in terms of subgraphs of $G^π$ and present a combinatorial study for the first order deformations of $Y_π$. We p…
We study the combinatorics of pseudoline arrangements and their relation to the geometry of flag and Schubert varieties. We associate to each pseudoline arrangement two polyhedral cones, defined in a dual manner. We prove that one of them is the weighted string cone by Littelmann and Berenstein-Zelevinsky. For the other we show how it arises in the framework of cluster varieties and mirror symmetry by Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich: for the flag variety the cone is the tropicalization of their superpotential while for Schubert varieties a restriction of the superpotential is necessary. We prove…
We study toric degenerations of semi-infinite Grassmannians (a.k.a. quantum Grassmannians). While the toric degenerations of the classical Grassmannians are well studied, the only known example in the semi-infinite case is due to Sottile-Sturmfels. We start by providing a new interpretation of the Sottile-Sturmfels construction by finding a poset such that their degeneration is the toric variety of the order polytope of the poset. We then use our poset to construct and study a new toric degeneration in the semi-infinite case. Our construction is based on the notion of poset polytopes introduce…
Let $X$ be a smooth irreducible complex algebraic variety of dimension $n$ and $L$ a very ample line bundle on $X$. Given a toric degeneration of $(X,L)$ satisfying some natural technical hypotheses, we construct a deformation $\{J_s\}$ of the complex structure on $X$ and bases $\mathcal{B}_s$ of $H^0(X,L, J_s)$ so that $J_0$ is the standard complex structure and, in the limit as $s \to \infty$, the basis elements approach dirac-delta distributions centered at Bohr-Sommerfeld fibers of a moment map associated to $X$ and its toric degeneration. The theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies and its assoc…
We propose a refined but natural notion of toric degenerations that respect a given embedding and show that within this framework a Gorenstein Fano variety can only be degenerated to a Gorenstein Fano toric variety if it is embedded via its anticanonical embedding. This also gives a precise criterion for reflexive polytopes to appear, which might be required for applications in mirror symmetry. For the proof of this statement we will study polytopes whose polar dual is a lattice polytope. As a byproduct we generalize a connection between the number of lattice points in a rational convex polyto…
We introduce rectangular elements in the symmetric group. In the framework of PBW degenerations, we show that in type A the degenerate Schubert variety associated to a rectangular element is indeed a Schubert variety in a partial flag variety of the same type with larger rank. Moreover, the degenerate Demazure module associated to a rectangular element is isomorphic to the Demazure module for this particular Schubert variety of larger rank. This generalizes previous results by Cerulli Irelli, Lanini and Littelmann for the PBW degenerate flag variety.
Our main goal is to show that the Gelfand--Tsetlin toric degeneration of the type A flag variety can be obtained within a degenerate representation-theoretic framework similar to the theory of PBW degenerations. In fact, we provide such frameworks for all Gröbner degenerations intermediate between the flag variety and the GT toric variety. These degenerations are shown to induce filtrations on the irreducible representations and the associated graded spaces are acted upon by a certain associative algebra. To achieve our goal, we construct embeddings of our Gröbner degenerations into the projec…

We study algebraic, combinatorial and geometric aspects of weighted PBW-type degenerations of (partial) flag varieties in type $A$. These degenerations are labeled by degree functions lying in an explicitly defined polyhedral cone, which can be identified with a maximal cone in the tropical flag variety. Varying the degree function in the cone, we recover, for example, the classical flag variety, its abelian PBW degeneration, some of its linear degenerations and a particular toric degeneration.
Let $V$ be the weighted projective variety defined by a weighted homogeneous ideal $J$ and $C$ a maximal cone in the Gröbner fan of $J$ with $m$ rays. We construct a flat family over $\mathbb A^m$ that assembles the Gröbner degenerations of $V$ associated with all faces of $C$. This is a multi-parameter generalization of the classical one-parameter Gröbner degeneration associated to a weight. We explain how our family can be constructed from Kaveh-Manon's recent work on the classification of toric flat families over toric varieties: it is the pull-back of a toric family defined by a Rees algeb…
