In this paper we finish the topological classification of real algebraic surfaces of Kodaira dimension zero and we make a step towards the Enriques classification of real algebraic surfaces, by describing in detail the structure of the moduli space of real hyperelliptic surfaces.
Moreover, we point out the relevance in real geometry of the notion of the orbifold fundamental group of a real variety, and we discuss related questions on real varieties $(X, σ)$ whose underlying complex manifold $X$ is a $K (π, 1)$.
Our first result is that if $(S, σ)$ is a real hyperelliptic surface, then the differentiable type of the pair $(S, σ)$ is completely determined by the orbifold fundamental group exact sequence. This result allows us to determine all the possible topological types of $(S, σ)$, and to prove that they are exactly 78.
It follows also as a corollary that there are exactly eleven cases for the topological type of the real part of S.
Finally, we show that once we fix the topological type of $(S, σ)$ corresponding to a real hyperelliptic surface, the corresponding moduli space is irreducible (and connected).
We also give, through a series of tables, explicit analytic representations of the 78 components of the moduli space.
We study the inertia stack of [M_{0,n}/S_n], the quotient stack of the moduli space of smooth genus 0 curves with n marked points via the action of the symmetric group S_n. Then we see how from this analysis we can obtain a description of the inertia stack of H_g, the moduli stack of hyperelliptic curves of genus g. From this, we can compute additively the Chen-Ruan (or orbifold) cohomology of H_g.
In this paper we give a geometrical interpretation of an extension of mixed Hodge structures (MHS) obtained from the canonical MHS on the group ring of the fundamental group of a hyperelliptic curve modulo the fourth power of its augmentation ideal. We show that the class of this extension coincides with the regulator image of a canonical higher cycle in a hyperelliptic jacobian. This higher cycle was introduced and studied by Collino.
We study the Abramovich--Vistoli moduli space of genus zero orbifold stable maps to [Sym^2 P^2], the stack symmetric square of P^2. This compactifies the moduli space of stable maps from hyperelliptic curves to P^2, and we show that all genus zero Gromov--Witten invariants are determined from trivial enumerative geometry of hyperelliptic curves. We also show how the genus zero Gromov--Witten invariants can be used to determine the number of hyperelliptic curves of degree d and genus g interpolating 3d + 1 generic points in P^2. Comparing our method to that of Graber for calculating the same nu…
For an Abelian surface $A$ with a symplectic action by a finite group $G$, one can define the partition function for $G$-invariant Hilbert schemes \[Z_{A, G}(q) = \sum_{d=0}^{\infty} e(\text{Hilb}^{d}(A)^{G})q^{d}.\] We prove the reciprocal $Z_{A,G}^{-1}$ is a modular form of weight $\frac{1}{2}e(A/G)$ for the congruence subgroup $Γ_{0}(|G|)$, and give explicit expressions in terms of eta products. Refined formulas for the $χ_{y}$-genera of $\text{Hilb}(A)^{G}$ are also given. For the group generated by the standard involution $τ: A \to A$, our formulas arise from the enumerative geometry of t…
There is a well known bijective correspondence between isomorphism classes of polystable vector bundles $E$ with $c_i(E)=0$ for $i\geq 1$ on a smooth complex projective variety and equivalence classes of unitary representations of the fundamental group of the variety. We show that this bijective correspondence extends to smooth orbifolds.
In \cite{KP}, the last two authors introduced formal orbifold curves defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristics. They studied both étale and Nori fundamental group schemes associated to such objects. Our aim here is to study the higher dimensional analog of these objects objects and their fundamental groups.
We prove that k-th singular cohomology group of the complement of the theta divisor in a hyperelliptic Jacobian is isomorphic to the k-th fundamental representation of the symplectic group Sp(2g,C). This is one of the conjectures in our previous paper.
The computation of the field of moduli of a closed Riemann surface seems to be a very difficult problem and even more difficult is to determine if the field of moduli is a field of definition. In this paper we consider the family of closed Riemann surfaces of genus five admitting a group of conformal automorphisms isomorphic to ${\mathbb Z}_{2}^{4}$. These surfaces are non-hyperelliptic ones and turn out to be the highest branched abelian covers of the orbifolds of genus zero and five cone points of order two. We compute the field of moduli of these surfaces and we prove that they are fields o…
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
We associate a generalized root system in the sense of Kyoji Saito to an orbifold projective line via the derived category of finite dimensional representations of a certain bound quiver algebra. We generalize results by Saito--Takebayshi and Yamada for elliptic Weyl groups and elliptic Artin groups to the Weyl groups and the fundamental groups of the regular orbit spaces associated to the generalized root systems. Moreover we study the relation between this fundamental group and a certain subgroup of the autoequivalence group of a triangulated subcategory of the derived category of $2$-Calabi…
A closed formula is obtained for the integral $\int_{\mathcal{\bar{H}}_g^1}κ_{1}ψ^{2g-2}$ of tautological classes over the locus of hyperelliptic Weierstraß points in the moduli space of curves. As a corollary, a relation between Hodge integrals is obtained. The calculation utilizes the homeomorphism between the moduli space of curves $\mathcal{M}_{g,1}$ and the combinatorial moduli space $\mathcal{M}^{comb}_{g,1}$, a PL-orbifold whose cells are enumerated by fatgraphs. This cell decomposition can be used to naturally construct combinatorial PL-cycles $W_a\subset\mathcal{M}^{comb}_{g,1}$ whose…
This article is devoted to examples of (orbifold) Kähler groups from the perspective of the so-called Shafarevich conjecture on holomorphic convexity. It aims at pointing out that every quasi-projective complex manifold with an 'interesting' fundamental group gives rise to interesting instances of this long-standing open question. Complements of line arrangements are one of the better known classes of quasi-projective complex surfaces with an interesting fundamental group. We solve the corresponding instance of the Shafarevich conjecture partially giving a proof that the universal covering sur…
We show that the orbifold fundamental group of an effective compact K{ä}hler orbifold with nef anticanonical bundle has polynomial growth, which generalizes M.P ăun's results for manifolds [P ău97, Theorem 1,Theorem 2]
We define formal orbifolds over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic as curves together with some branch data. Their étale coverings and their fundamental groups are also defined. These fundamental group approximates the fundamental group of an appropriate affine curve. We also define vector bundles on these objects and the category of orbifold bundles on any smooth projective curve. Analogues of various statement about vector bundles which are true in characteristic zero are proved. Some of these are positive characteristic avatar of notions which appear in the second aut…
Formal orbifolds are defined in higher dimension. Their étale fundamental groups are also defined. It is shown that the fundamental groups of formal orbifolds have certain finiteness property and it is also shown that they can be used to approximate the étale fundamental groups of normal varieties. Etale site on formal orbifolds are also defined. This framework allows one to study wild ramification in an organised way. Brylinski-Kato filtration, Lefschetz theorem for fundamental groups and $l$-adic sheaves in these contexts are also studied.
We give an overview of the category of subgroups of the modular group, incorporating both the tame part, i.e. finite index subgroups, and the non-tame part, i.e. the rest. We also discuss arithmetic related questions which exist in both the tame part (via Belyi's theorem) and the non-tame part.
We prove that the hyperelliptic Torelli group is generated by Dehn twists about separating curves that are preserved by the hyperelliptic involution. This verifies a conjecture of Hain. The hyperelliptic Torelli group can be identified with the kernel of the Burau representation evaluated at t=-1 and also the fundamental group of the branch locus of the period mapping, and so we obtain analogous generating sets for those. One application is that each component in Torelli space of the locus of hyperelliptic curves becomes simply connected when curves of compact type are added.
We prove that the irreducible components of the characteristic varieties of quasi-projective manifolds are either pull-backs of such components for orbifolds, or torsion points. This gives an interpretation for the so-called \emph{translated} components of the characteristic varieties, and shows that the zero-dimensional components are indeed torsion. The main result is used to derive further obstructions for a group to be the fundamental group of a quasi-projective manifold.
A closed Riemann surface $S$ is called a generalized Fermat curve of type $(p,n)$, where $n,p \geq 2$ are integers such that $(p-1)(n-1)>2$, if it admits a group $H \cong {\mathbb Z}_{p}^{n}$ of conformal automorphisms with quotient orbifold $S/H$ of genus zero with exactly $n+1$ cone points, each one of order $p$; in this case $H$ is called a generalized Fermat group of type $(p,n)$. In this case, it is known that $S$ is non-hyperelliptic and that $H$ is its unique generalized Fermat group of type $(p,n)$. Also, explicit equations for them, as a fiber product of classical Fermat curves of deg…
Moduli spaces for Galois covers of p-adic Mumford curves by Mumford curves are constructed using Herrlich's Teichmuller spaces, Andre's orbifold fundamental groups, and Kato's graphs of groups encoding ramification data of charts for Mumford orbifolds.
We define the notion of fundamental group of an algebraic stack, prove a comparison theorem between the fundamental group of a stack over the complex numbers and that of the associated analytic orbifold, show that this notion coincides with that defined with simplicial schemes by Oda and finally prove some short exact sequences involving these groups.
To each connected component in the space of semisimple representations from the orbifold fundamental group of the base orbifold of a Seifert fibered homology 3-sphere into the Lie group U(2,1), we associate a real number called the "orbifold Toledo invariant." For each such orbifold, there exists an elliptic surface over it, called a Dolgachev surface. Using the theory of Higgs bundles on these Dolgachev surfaces, we explicitly compute all values taken on by the orbifold Toledo invariant.
The Noether-Horikawa surfaces are the minimal surfaces S with K^2=2p_g-4. For 8 | K^2 they belong to two families of respective type C and N (connected, resp. non connected branch locus for the canonical map). For 16 | K^2 the two types are homeomorphic. Ulf Persson constructed surfaces of type N with a maximally singular canonical model X, whose topology encodes information on the differentiable structure of S. A similar analysis was done by the first author for type C. In this paper we study the genus 2 fibration on X and, in particular, our main result is (X^# being the nonsingular locus of…
We discuss properties of complex algebraic orbifold groups, their characteristic varieties, and their abelian covers. In particular, we deal with the question of (quasi)-projectivity of orbifold groups. We also prove a structure theorem for the variety of characters of normal-crossing quasi-projective orbifold groups. Finally, we extend Sakuma's formula for the first Betti number of abelian covers of orbifold fundamental groups. Several examples are presented, including a compact orbifold group which is not projective and a Zariski pair of plane projective curves that can be told by considerin…
Let S be a minimal complex surface of general type with $q(S)=0$. We prove the following statements concerning the algebraic fundamental group: I) Assume that K^2_S\leq 3χ(S). Then S has an irregular etale cover if and only if S has a free pencil of hyperelliptic curves of genus 3 with at least 4 double fibres. II) If K^2_S=3 and χ(S)=1, then S has no irregular etale cover. III) If K^2_S<3χ(S) and S does not have any irregular etale cover, then the order of the algebraic fundamental group is lesser or equal to 9, and if equality occurs then K^2_S=2, χ(S)=1.

The present paper describes a relation between the quotient of the fundamental group of a smooth quasi-projective variety by its second commutator and the existence of maps to orbifold curves. It extends previously studied cases when the target was a smooth curve. In the case when the quasi-projective variety is a complement to a plane algebraic curve this provides new relations between the fundamental group, the equation of the curve, and the existence of polynomial solutions to certain equations generalizing Pell's equation. These relations are formulated in terms of the depth which is an in…
This is a sequel to [Ca01]=math.AG/0110051. We define the bimeromorphic {\it category} of geometric orbifolds. These interpolate between (compact K\" ahler) manifolds and such manifolds with logarithmic structure. These geometric orbifolds are considered from the point of view of their geometry, and thus equipped with the usual invariants of varieties: morphisms and bimeromorphic maps, differential forms, fundamental groups and universal covers, fields of definition and rational points. The most elementary properties, directly adapted from the case of varieties without orbifold structure, are …
We prove a conjecture of Kollár stating that the local fundamental group of a klt singularity $x$ is finite. In fact, we prove a stronger statement, namely that the fundamental group of the smooth locus of a neighbourhood of $x$ is finite. We call this the regional fundamental group. As the proof goes via a local-to-global induction, we simultaneously confirm finiteness of the orbifold fundamental group of the smooth locus of a weakly Fano pair.
Let ${\cal M}_{g,n}$ and ${\cal H}_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be, respectively, the moduli stack of $n$-pointed, genus $g$ smooth curves and its closed substack consisting of hyperelliptic curves. Their topological fundamental groups can be identified, respectively, with $Γ_{g,n}$ and $H_{g,n}$, the so called Teichm{ü}ller modular group and hyperelliptic modular group. A choice of base point on ${\cal H}_{g,n}$ defines a monomorphism $H_{g,n}\hookrightarrowΓ_{g,n}$. Let $S_{g,n}$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ with $n$ points removed. The Teichmüller group $Γ_{g,n}$ is the group of iso…
We construct certain orbifold compactifications of the moduli stack of pointed stable curves over $\mathbb C$ and study their fundamental groups by means of their quantum representations. This enables to construct interesting Kähler groups and to settle most of the candidates for a counter-example to the Shafarevich conjecture on holomorphic convexity proposed in 1998 by Bogomolov and Katzarkov, using TQFT representations of the mapping class groups.
We present two results about the relationship between fundamental groups of quasiprojective manifolds and linear systems on a projectivization. We prove the existence of a plane curve with non-abelian fundamental group of the complement which does not admit a mapping onto an orbifold with non-abelian fundamental group. We also find an affine manifold whose irreducible components of its characteristic varieties do not come from the pull-back of the characteristic varieties of an orbifold.

We study fundamental groups of toroidal compactifications of non compact ball quotients and show that the Shafarevich conjecture on holomorphic convexity for these complex projective manifolds is satisfied in dimension 2 provided the corresponding lattice is arithmetic and small enough. The method is to show that the Albanese mapping on an {é}tale covering space generates jets on the interior, if the lattice is small enough. We also explore some specific examples of Picard-Eisenstein type.
In this paper we construct extensions of mixed Hodge structures coming from the mixed Hodge structure on the graded quotients of the group ring of the fundamental group of a smooth, projective, pointed curve. These extensions correspond to the regulators of certain motivic cycles in the Jacobian of the curve which were constructed by Beilinson and Bloch. This leads to a new iterated integral expression for the regulator. This is a generalisation of a theorem of Colombo where she constructed the extension corresponding to Collino's cycles in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve.

In this paper we construct extensions of the Mixed Hodge structure on the fundamental group of a pointed algebraic curve. These extensions correspond to the regulator of certain explicit motivic cohomology cycles in the self product of the curve which were first constructed by Bloch and Beilinson. This leads to a new iterated integral expression for the regulator. Our result is a generalization of a result of Colombo's where she constructs the extension corresponding to a motivic cycle class in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve constructed by Collino. This is to appear in the Mathematical …
For an elliptic surface $q:Y \to Σ$, with prescribed singular fibres, Stefan Bauer proved directly via algebraic geometry that the stable bundles over $Y$, whose chern classes are pull backs from $Σ$, correspond to the stable (V-)bundles over $Σ$. We show, via a short proof in differential geometry, a generalisation to stable parabolic bundles. This uses extensions of Donaldson's deep result, giving the existence of Hermitian-Yang-Mills (or anti-self-dual) connections on stable parabolic bundles. In our cases these connections are flat and hence, correspond to representations of certain fundam…
This paper exposes the fundamental role that the Drinfel'd double $\dkg$ of the group ring of a finite group $G$ and its twists $\dbkg$, $β\in Z^3(G,\uk)$ as defined by Dijkgraaf--Pasquier--Roche play in stringy orbifold theories and their twistings. The results pertain to three different aspects of the theory. First, we show that $G$--Frobenius algebras arising in global orbifold cohomology or K-theory are most naturally defined as elements in the braided category of $\dkg$--modules. Secondly, we obtain a geometric realization of the Drinfel'd double as the global orbifold $K$--theory of glob…
We shall show how to decompose, by functorial and canonical fibrations, arbitrary $n$-dimensional complex projective {Although the geometric results apply to compact K\" ahler manifolds without change, we consider here for simplicity this special case only.} varieties $X$ into varieties (or rather ` geometric orbifolds\rq $)$ of one of the three \pure geometries determined by the `sign' (negative, zero, or positive) of the canonical bundle. These decompositions being birationally invariant, birational versions of these \pure geometries, based on the \canonical (or ` Kodaira\rq $)$ dimension wi…
We prove that any one-relator group $G$ is the fundamental group of a compact Sasakian manifold if and only if $G$ is either finite cyclic or isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface of genus g > 0 with at most one orbifold point of order $n \geq 1$. We also classify all groups of deficiency at least two that are also the fundamental group of some compact Sasakian manifold.
