We establish tools to facilitate the computation and application of the Chekanov-Eliashberg differential graded algebra (DGA), a Legendrian-isotopy invariant of Legendrian knots in standard contact three-space. More specifically, we reformulate the DGA in terms of front projection, and introduce the characteristic algebra, a new invariant derived from the DGA. We use our techniques to distinguish between several previously indistinguishable Legendrian knots and links.
We present two different constructions of invariants for Legendrian knots in the standard contact space $\R^3$. These invariants are defined combinatorially, in terms of certain planar projections, and are useful in distinguishing Legendrian knots that have the same classical invariants but are not Legendrian isotopic.
We give new functions of Legendrian knots derived from Legendrian fronts. These are integer-valued linear functions that are alike the Arnold basic invariant of plane curves. Various generalizations of the Arnold basic invariant have been known. In this paper, we give another extension of Arnold's idea.
We introduce a theory of virtual Legendrian knots. A virtual Legendrian knot is a cooriented wavefront on an oriented surface up to Legendrian isotopy of its lift to the unit cotangent bundle and stabilization and destablization of the surface away from the wavefront. We show that the groups of Vassiliev invariants of virtual Legendrian knots and of virtual framed knots are isomorphic. In particular, Vassiliev invariants cannot be used to distinguish virtual Legendrian knots that are isotopic as virtual framed knots and have equal virtual Maslov numbers.
We prove the equivalence of the invariants EH(L) and LOSS-(L) for oriented Legendrian knots L in the 3-sphere equipped with the standard contact structure, partially extending a previous result by Stipsicz and Vertesi. In the course of the proof we relate the sutured Floer homology groups associated with a knot complement and knot Floer homology, and define intermediate Legendrian invariants.
In this article, we consider the maximal value of the Thurston--Bennequin invariant of Legendrian knots which topologically represent a fixed knot type in the standard contact 3-space and we prove a formula of the value under the connected sum operation of knots.
We prove that the LOSS and GRID invariants of Legendrian links in knot Floer homology behave in certain functorial ways with respect to decomposable Lagrangian cobordisms in the symplectization of the standard contact structure on $\mathbb{R}^3$. Our results give new, computable, and effective obstructions to the existence of such cobordisms.

It is proved in this note that the analogues of the Bennequin inequality which provide an upper bound for the Bennequin invariant of a Legendrian knot in the standard contact three dimensional space in terms of the lower degree in the framing variable of the HOMFLY and the Kauffman polynomials are not sharp. Furthermore, the relationships between these restrictions on the range of the Bennequin invariant are investigated, which leads to a new simple proof of the inequality involving the Kauffman polynomial.
Theory is developed for linear-quadratic at infinity generating families for Legendrian knots in R^3. It is shown that the unknot with maximal Thurston--Bennequin invariant of -1 has a unique linear-quadratic at infinity generating family, up to fiber-preserving diffeomorphism and stabilization. From this, invariant generating family polynomials are constructed for 2-component Legendrian links where each component is a maximal unknot. Techniques are developed to compute these polynomials, and computations are done for two families of Legendrian links: rational links and twist links. The polyno…
All knots in $R^3$ possess Seifert surfaces, and so the classical Thurston-Bennequin and rotation (or Maslov) invariants for Legendrian knots in a contact structure on $R^3$ can be defined. The definitions extend easily to null-homologous knots in any $3$-manifold $M$ endowed with a contact structure $ξ$. We generalize the definition of Seifert surfaces and use them to define these invariants for all Legendrian knots, including those that are not null-homologous, in a contact structure on the $3$-torus $T^3$. We show how to compute the Thurston-Bennequin and rotation invariants in a tight orie…
We extend Turaev's definition of torsion invariants of 3-dimensional manifolds equipped with non-singular vector fields, by allowing (suitable) tangency circles to the boundary, and manifolds with non-zero Euler characteristic. We show that these invariants apply in particular to (the exterior of) Legendrian links in contact 3-manifolds. Our approach uses a combinatorial encoding of vector fields, based on standard spines. In this paper we extend this encoding from closed manifolds to manifolds with boundary.
We study the Ozsváth-Szabó-Thurston transverse invariant in combinatorial link Floer homology for certain transverse cables $\mathscr{L}_{p,q}$ of transverse link $L$ in $S^3$. Transverse cables $\mathscr{L}_{p,q}$ are constructed from the grid diagram of $L$. The main result is $\hatθ(\mathscr{L}_{p,q})=0$ if and only if $\hatθ(L)=0$ for $\frac{q}{p}$ sufficiently large. We also prove a similar result for invariants of Legendrian knots. Our proof uses an inclusion map $i$ of certain grid complexes associated to $L$ and $L_{p,q}$. We use these results to generate many infinite families of exam…
We prove two results on the classification of trivial Legendrian embeddings $g: G \rightarrow (S^3,ξ_{std})$ of planar graphs. First, the oriented Legendrian ribbon $R_g$ and rotation invariant $\text{rot}_g$ are a complete set of invariants. Second, if $G$ is 3-connected or contains $K_4$ as a minor, then the unique trivial embedding of $G$ is Legendrian simple.
In \cite{GZ}, Gilmer and Zhong established the existence of an invariant for links in $S^1\times S^2$ which is a rational function in variables $a$ and $s$ and satisfies the HOMFLY-PT skein relations. We give formulas for evaluating this invariant in terms of a standard, geometrically simple basis for the HOMFLY-PT skein module of the solid torus. This allows computation of the invariant for arbitrary links in $S^1\times S^2$ and shows that the invariant is in fact a Laurent polynomial in $a$ and $z= s -s^{-1}$. Our proof uses connections between HOMFLY-PT skein modules and invariants of Legen…
For a knot $K$ the cube number is a knot invariant defined to be the smallest $n$ for which there is a cube diagram of size $n$ for $K$. There is also a Legendrian version of this invariant called the \emph{Legendrian cube number}. We will show that the Legendrian cube number distinguishes the Legendrian left hand torus knots with maximal Thurston-Bennequin number and maximal rotation number from the Legendrian left hand torus knots with maximal Thurston-Bennequin number and minimal rotation number.
We introduce a generalization of the Lisca-Ozsváth-Stipsicz-Szabó Legendrian invariant $\mathfrak L$ to links in every rational homology sphere, using the collapsed version of link Floer homology. We represent a Legendrian link $L$ in a contact 3-manifold $(M,ξ)$ with a diagram $D$, given by an open book decomposition of $(M,ξ)$ adapted to $L$, and we construct a chain complex $cCFL^-(D)$ with a special cycle in it denoted by $\mathfrak L(D)$. Then, given two diagrams $D_1$ and $D_2$ which represent Legendrian isotopic links, we prove that there is a map between the corresponding chain complex…
We define a new algebraic structure called Legendrian racks or racks with Legendrian structure, motivated by the front-projection Reidemeister moves for Legendrian knots. We provide examples of Legendrian racks and use these algebraic structures to define invariants of Legendrian knots with explicit computational examples. We classify Legendrian structures on racks with 3 and 4 elements. We use Legendrian racks to distinguish certain Legendrian knots which are equivalent as smooth knots.
The study of the Vassiliev invariants of Legendrian knots was started by D. Fuchs and S. Tabachnikov who showed that the groups of complex-valued Vassiliev invariants of Legendrian and of framed knots in the standard contact $R^3$ are canonically isomorphic. Recently we constructed the first examples where Vassiliev invariants of Legendrian and of framed knots are different, and Vassiliev invariants of Legendrian knots distinguish Legendrian knots that are isotopic as framed knots and homotopic as Legendrian immersions. This raised the question what information about Legendrian knots can be ca…
Suppose that L is a null--homologous Legendrian knot in a contact 3--manifold. We determine the connection between the sutured invariant of the complement of L and the Legendrian invariant defined by Lisca, Ozsvath, Stipsicz and Szabo. In particular, we derive a vanishing theorem for the Legendrian invariant in the presence of Giroux torsion in the complement of the knot, and reprove several known properties of the Legendrian invariant from this perspective.
We show that there exists a Legendrian knot with maximal Thurston-Bennequin invariant whose contact homology is trivial. We also provide another Legendrian knot which has the same knot type and classical invariants but nonvanishing contact homology.
In this paper, the support genus of all Legendrian right handed trefoil knots and some other Legendrian knots is computed. We give examples of Legendrian knots in the three-sphere with the standard contact structure which have positive support genus with arbitrarily negative Thurston-Benniquin invariant. This answers a question in Onaran.
We prove that loose Legendrian knots in a rational homology contact 3-sphere, satisfying some additional hypothesis, are Legendrian isotopic if and only if they have the same classical invariants. The proof requires a result of Dymara on loose Legendrian knots and Eliashberg's classification of overtwisted contact structures on 3-manifolds.
We study the Thurston-Bennequin number of complete and complete bipartite Legendrian graphs. We define a new invariant called the total Thurston-Bennequin number of the graph. We show that this invariant is determined by the Thurston-Bennequin numbers of 3-cycles for complete graphs and by the Thurston-Bennequin number of 4-cycles for complete bipartite graphs. We discuss the consequences of these results for K_4, K_5 and K_{3,3}.
In this note, we observe that the hat version of the Heegaard Floer invariant of Legendrian knots in contact three-manifolds defined by Lisca-Ozsvath-Stipsicz-Szabo can be combinatorially computed. We rely on Plamenevskaya's combinatorial description of the Heegaard Floer contact invariant.
Let E be a circle bundle over a Riemann surface that supports a contact structure transverse to the fibers. This paper presents a combinatorial definition of a differential graded algebra (DGA) that is an invariant of Legendrian knots in E. The invariant generalizes Chekanov's combinatorial DGA invariant of Legendrian knots in the standard contact 3-space using ideas from Eliashberg, Givental, and Hofer's contact homology. The main difficulty lies in dealing with what are ostensibly 1-parameter families of generators for the DGA; these are solved using ``Morse-Bott'' techniques. As an applicat…
We use the contact invariant defined in [2] to construct a new invariant of Legendrian knots in Kronheimer and Mrowka's monopole knot homology theory (KHM), following a prescription of Stipsicz and Vértesi. Our Legendrian invariant improves upon an earlier Legendrian invariant in KHM defined by the second author in several important respects. Most notably, ours is preserved by negative stabilization. This fact enables us to define a transverse knot invariant in KHM via Legendrian approximation. It also makes our invariant a more likely candidate for the monopole Floer analogue of the "LOSS" in…
We show that for a large class of contact 3-manifolds the groups of Vassiliev invariants of Legendrian and of framed knots are canonically isomorphic. As a corollary, we obtain that the group of finite order Arnold's $J^+$-type invariants of wave fronts on a surface $F$ is isomorphic to the group of Vassiliev invariants of framed knots in the spherical cotangent bundle $ST^*F$ of $F$. On the other hand we construct the first examples of contact manifolds for which Vassiliev invariants of Legendrian knots can distinguish Legendrian knots that realize isotopic framed knots and are homotopic as L…
We generalize Turaev's definition of torsion invariants of pairs (M,x), where M is a 3-dimensional manifold and x is an Euler structure on M (a non-singular vector field up to homotopy relative to bM and local modifications in int(M). Namely, we allow M to have arbitrary boundary and x to have simple (convex and/or concave) tangency circles to the boundary. We prove that Turaev's H_1(M)-equivariance formula holds also in our generalized context. Our torsions apply in particular to (the exterior of) pseudo-Legendrian knots (i.e. knots transversal to a given vector field), and hence to Legendria…
For a knot K the cube number is a knot invariant defined to be the smallest n for which there is a cube diagram of size n for K. We will show that the cube number detects chirality in all cases computed thus far, and distinguishes certain legendrian knots.
We define invariants of null--homologous Legendrian and transverse knots in contact 3--manifolds. The invariants are determined by elements of the knot Floer homology of the underlying smooth knot. We compute these invariants, and show that they do not vanish for certain non--loose knots in overtwisted 3--spheres. Moreover, we apply the invariants to find transversely non--simple knot types in many overtwisted contact 3--manifolds.
It is shown that Legendrian (resp. transverse) cable links in the 3-sphere with its standard tight contact structure, i.e. links consisting of an unknot and a cable of that unknot, are classified by their oriented link type and the classical invariants (Thurston-Bennequin invariant and rotation number in the Legendrian case, self-linking number in the transverse case). The analogous result is proved for torus knots in the 1-jet space of the circle with its standard tight contact structure.
We introduce a new Legendrian isotopy invariant for any closed orientable Legendrian surface $L$ embedded in a closed contact $5$-manifold $(M, ξ)$ which admits an "admissable" open book $(B, f)$ (supporting $ξ$) for $L$. We show that to any such $L$ and a fixed page $X$, one can assign an integer $M\mathcal{P}_{X}(L)$, called "Relative Maximal Page Crossing Number of $L$ with respect to $X$", which is invariant under Legendrian isotopies of $L$. We also show that one can extend this to a page-free invariant, i.e., one can assign an integer $M\mathcal{P}_{(B,f)}(L)$, called "Absolute Maximal P…
In this article, we introduce rack invariants of oriented Legendrian knots in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space endowed with the standard contact structure, which we call Legendrian racks. These invariants form a generalization of the quandle invariants of knots. These rack invariants do not result in a complete invariant, but detect some of the geometric properties such as cusps in a Legendrian knot. In the case of topologically trivial Legendrian knots, we test this family of invariants for its strengths and limitations. We further prove that these invariants form a natural generalization of…
The problem of classification of Legendrian knots (links) up to isotopy in the class of Legendrian embeddings (Legendrian isotopy) naturally leads to the following two subproblems. The first of them is: which combinations of the three classical invariants can be realized by a Legendrian knot? (It is well-known that each invariant by itself can be realized by a Legendrian knot). The first step in this direction was done by Bennequin who proved that the Bennequin number of a Legendrian knot is less than twice its genus. The second subproblem is whether there exist a pair of Legendrian knots whic…
We show that the ungraded ruling invariants of a Legendrian link can be realized as certain coefficients of the Kauffman polynomial which are non-vanishing if and only if the upper bound for the Bennequin number given by the Kauffman polynomial is sharp. This resolves positively a conjecture of Fuchs. Using similar methods a result involving the upper bound given by the HOMFLY polynomial and 2-graded rulings is proved.
Using the combinatorial approach to knot Floer homology, we define an invariant for Legendrian knots in the three-sphere, which takes values in link Floer homology. This invariant can be used to also construct an invariant of transverse knots.
Contact homology for Legendrian submanifolds in standard contact $(2n+1)$-space is rigorously defined using moduli spaces of holomorphic disks with Lagrangian boundary conditions in complex $n$-space. It provides new invariants of Legendrian isotopy. Using these invariants the theory of Legendrian isotopy is shown to be very rich. For example, infinite families of pairwise non-isotopic Legendrian $n$-spheres and $n$-tori, which are indistinguishable by means of previously known invariants, are constructed. In a sense, the definition of contact homology presented in this paper is a high dimensi…
We define ruling invariants for even-valence Legendrian graphs in standard contact three-space. We prove that rulings exist if and only if the DGA of the graph, introduced by the first two authors, has an augmentation. We set up the usual ruling polynomials for various notions of gradedness and prove that if the graph is four-valent, then the ungraded ruling polynomial appears in Kauffman-Vogel's graph version of the Kauffman polynomial. Our ruling invariants are compatible with certain vertex-identifying operations as well as vertical cuts and gluings of front diagrams. We also show that Leve…
Using contact-geometric techniques and sutured Floer homology, we present an alternate formulation of the minus and plus version of knot Floer homology. We further show how natural constructions in the realm of contact geometry give rise to much of the formal structure relating the various versions of Heegaard Floer homology. In addition, to a Legendrian or transverse knot K in a contact manifold (Y,ξ), we associate distinguished classes EHL(K) in the minus-version of knot floer homology and EHIL(K) in the plus version, which are each invariant under Legendrian or transverse isotopies of K. Th…
We provide a translation between Chekanov's combinatorial theory for invariants of Legendrian knots in the standard contact R^3 and a relative version of Eliashberg and Hofer's Contact Homology. We use this translation to transport the idea of ``coherent orientations'' from the Contact Homology world to Chekanov's combinatorial setting. As a result, we obtain a lifting of Chekanov's differential graded algebra invariant to an algebra over Z[t,t^{-1}] with a full Z grading.
We define an algebraic/combinatorial object on the front projection $Σ$ of a Legendrian knot called a Morse complex sequence, abbreviated MCS. This object is motivated by the theory of generating families and provides new connections between generating families, normal rulings, and augmentations of the Chekanov-Eliashberg DGA. In particular, we place an equivalence relation on the set of MCSs on $Σ$ and construct a surjective map from the equivalence classes to the set of chain homotopy classes of augmentations of $L_Σ$, where $L_Σ$ is the Ng resolution of $Σ$. In the case of Legendrian knot c…
We prove that two Legendrian knots in a contact structure which is trivializable as a plane bundle are Legendrian isotopic provided that (1) they are isotopic as framed knots, (2) they have the same rotation number with respect to some parallelization of the contact structure, and (3) there is an overtwisted disk disjoint with both knots. (For zero-homologous knots the condition (1) reads as: (1a) they are isotopic as topological knots, and (1b) they have the same Thurston-Bennequin invariant.) Then we discuss the situation when condition (3) is not fulfilled, in particular that of non-loose L…
Using the grid diagram formulation of knot Floer homology, Ozsvath, Szabo and Thurston defined an invariant of transverse knots in the tight contact 3-sphere. Shortly afterwards, Lisca, Ozsvath, Stipsicz and Szabo defined an invariant of transverse knots in arbitrary contact 3-manifolds using open book decompositions. It has been conjectured that these invariants agree where they are both defined. We prove this fact by defining yet another invariant of transverse knots, showing that this third invariant agrees with the two mentioned above.
We use monopole Floer homology for sutured manifolds to construct invariants of Legendrian knots in a contact 3-manifold. These invariants assign to a knot K in Y elements of the monopole knot homology KHM(-Y,K), and they strongly resemble the knot Floer homology invariants of Lisca, Ozsváth, Stipsicz, and Szabó. We prove several vanishing results, investigate their behavior under contact surgeries, and use this to construct many examples of non-loose knots in overtwisted 3-manifolds. We also show that these invariants are functorial with respect to Lagrangian concordance.
In this note, we define a new invariant of a Legendrian knot in a contact manifold using an open book decomposition supporting the contact structure. We define the support genus sg(L) of a Legendrian knot L in a contact 3-manifold (M, ξ) as the minimal genus of a page of an open book of M supporting the contact structure ξsuch that L sits on a page and the framing given by the contact structure and by the page agree. We show any null-homologous loose knot in an overtwisted contact structure has support genus zero. To prove this, we observe any topological knot or link in any 3-manifold M sits …
For Legendrian links in the 1-jet space of $S^1$ we show that the 1-graded ruling polynomial may be recovered from the Kauffman skein module. For such links a generalization of the notion of normal ruling is introduced. We show that the existence of such a generalized normal ruling is equivalent to sharpness of the Kauffman polynomial estimate for the Thurston-Bennequin number as well as to the existence of an ungraded augmentation of the Chekanov-Eliashberg DGA. Parallel results involving the HOMFLY-PT polynomial and 2-graded generalized normal rulings are established.
The Chekanov-Eliashberg differential graded algebra of a Legendrian knot L is a rich source of Legendrian knot invariants, as is the theory of generating families. The set P(L) of homology groups of augmentations of the Chekanov-Eliashberg algebra is an invariant, as is a count of objects from the theory of generating families called graded normal rulings. This article gives two results demonstrating the usefulness of computing the homology group of an augmentation using a combinatorial interpretation of a generating family called a Morse complex sequence. First, we show that if the projection…
We construct a combinatorial invariant of Legendrian knots in standard contact three-space. This invariant, which encodes rational relative Symplectic Field Theory and extends contact homology, counts holomorphic disks with an arbitrary number of positive punctures. The construction uses ideas from string topology.
We strengthen the link between holomorphic and generating-function invariants of Legendrian knots by establishing a formula relating the number of augmentations of a knot's contact homology to the complete ruling invariant of Chekanov and Pushkar.
We show that for a big class of contact manifolds the groups of order $\leq n$ invariants (with values in an arbitrary Abelian group) of Legendrian, of transverse and of framed knots are canonically isomorphic. On the other hand for an arbitrary cooriented contact structure on $S^1\times S^2$ with the nonzero Euler class of the contact bundle we construct examples of Legendrian homotopic Legendrian knots $K_1$ and $K_2$ such that they realize isotopic framed knots but can be distinguished by finite order invariants of Legendrian knots in $S^1\times S^2$. We construct similar examples for a big…
This paper is an overview of the idea of using contact geometry to construct invariants of immersions and embeddings. In particular, it discusses how to associate a contact manifold to any manifold and a Legendrian submanifold to an embedding or immersion. We then discuss recent work that creates invariants of immersions and embeddings using the Legendrian contact homology of the associated Legendrian submanifold.
