Ramanujan (and others) proved that the partition function satisfies a number of striking congruences modulo powers of 5, 7 and 11. A number of further congruences were shown by the works of Atkin, O'Brien, and Newman. In this paper we prove that there are infinitely many such congruences for every prime modulus exceeding 3. In addition, we provide a simple criterion guaranteeing the truth of Newman's conjecture for any prime modulus exceeding 3 (recall that Newman's conjecture asserts that the partition function hits every residue class modulo a given integer M infinitely often).
The notion of cubic partitions is introduced by Hei-Chi Chan and named by Byungchan Kim in connection with Ramanujan's cubic continued fractions. Chan proved that cubic partition function has Ramanujan Type congruences modulo powers of $3$. In a recent paper, William Y.C. Chen and Bernard L.S. Lin studied the congruent property of the cubic partition function modulo $5$. In this note, we give Ramanujan type congruences for cubic partition function modulo powers of $5$.
We introduce two new integer partition functions, both of which are the number of partition quadruples of $n$ with certain size restrictions. We prove both functions satisfy Ramanujan-type congruences modulo $3$, $5$, $7$, and $13$ by use of generalized Lambert series identities and $q$-series techniques.
We find and prove a class of congruences modulo 4 for Andrews' partition with certain ternary quadratic form. We also discuss distribution of $\overline{\mathcal{EO}}(n)$ and further prove that $\overline{\mathcal{EO}}(n)\equiv0\pmod4$ for almost all $n$. This study was inspired by similar congruences modulo 4 in the work by the second author and Garvan.
A partition of $n$ is $l$-regular if none of its parts is divisible by $l$. Let $b_l(n)$ denote the number of $l$-regular partitions of $n$. In this paper, using theta function identities due to Ramanujan, we establish some new infinite families of congruences for $b_l(n)$ modulo $l$, where $l=13,17,23$.
Recently, Lin introduced two new partition functions PD$_t(n)$ and PDO$_t(n)$, which count the total number of tagged parts over all partitions of $n$ with designated summands and the total number of tagged parts over all partitions of $n$ with designated summands in which all parts are odd. Lin also proved some congruences modulo 3 and 9 for PD$_t(n)$ and PDO$_t(n)$, and conjectured some congruences modulo 8. Very recently, Adansie, Chern, and Xia found two new infinite families of congruences modulo 9 for PD$_t(n)$. In this paper, we prove the congruences modulo 8 conjectured by Lin and also…
For any non-negative integer $n$ and non-zero integer $r$, let $p_r(n)$ denote Ramanujan's general partition function. By employing $q$-identities, we prove some new Ramanujan-type congruences modulo 5 for $p_r(n)$ for $r=-(5λ+1), -(5λ+3), -(5λ+4), -(25λ+1)$, $-(25λ+2)$, and any integer $λ$.
For any positive integers $n$ and $r$, let $p_r(n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ where each part has $r$ distinct colours. Many authors studied the partition function $p_r(n)$ for particular values of $r$. In this paper, we prove some general congruences modulo $5$ and $7$ for the colour partition function $p_r(n)$ by considering some general values of $r$. To prove the congruences we employ some $q$-series identities which is also in the spirit of Ramanujan.
Recently, Chan and Wang (Fractional powers of the generating function for the partition function. Acta Arith. 187(1), 59--80 (2019)) studied the fractional powers of the generating function for the partition function and found several congruences satisfied by the corresponding coefficients. In this paper, we find some new families of congruences modulo powers of primes. We also find analogous results for the coefficients of the fractional powers of the generating function for the 2-color partition function.
Let $b_k(n)$ denote the $k-$regular partitons of a natural number $n$. In this paper, we study the behavior of $b_k(n)$ modulo composite integers $M$ which are coprime to $6$. Specially, we prove that for arbitrary $k-$regular partiton function $b_k(n)$ and integer $M$ coprime to $6$, there are infinitely many Ramanujan-type congruences of $b_k(n)$ modulo $M$.
Let $b_{\ell, k}(n), b_{\ell, k, r}(n)$ count the number of $(\ell, k)$, $(\ell, k, r)$-regular partitions respectively. In this paper we shall derive infinite families of congruences for $b_{\ell, k}(n)$ modulo $2$ when $ (\ell, k) = (3,8), (4, 7)$, for $b_{\ell, k}(n)$ modulo $8$, modulo $9$ and modulo $12$ when $(\ell, k) = (4, 9)$ and $b_{\ell, k, r}(n)$ modulo $2$ when $(\ell, k, r) = (3, 5, 8)$.
Based on work of Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer on partition rank difference functions, and more recent work of Lovejoy and Osburn, Mao has proved several inequalities between partition ranks modulo $10$, and additional results modulo $6$ and $10$ for the $M_2$ rank of partitions without repeated odd parts. Mao conjectured some additional inequalities. We prove some of Mao's rank inequality conjectures for both the rank and the $M_2$ rank modulo $10$ using elementary methods.
The 2-color partitions may be considered as an extension of regular partitions of a natural number $n$, with $p_{k}(n)$ defined as the number of 2-colored partitions of $n$ where one of the 2 colors appears only in parts that are multiples of $k$. In this paper, we record the complete characterization of the modulo 5 congruence relation $p_{k}(25n + 24 - k) \equiv 0 \pmod{5}$ for $k \in \{1, 2, \ldots, 24\}$, in connection with the 2-color partition function $p_k(n)$, providing references to existing results for $k \in \{1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 17\}$, simple proofs for $k \in \{5, 10, 15, 20\}$ for …
An integral power series is called lacunary modulo $M$ if almost all of its coefficients are divisible by $M$. Motivated by the parity problem for the partition function, $p(n)$, Gordon and Ono studied the generating functions for $t$-regular partitions, and determined conditions for when these functions are lacunary modulo powers of primes. We generalize their results in a number of ways by studying infinite products called Dedekind eta-quotients and generalized Dedekind eta-quotients. We then apply our results to the generating functions for the partition functions considered by Nekrasov, Ok…
Motivated by a question of Lovejoy \cite{lovejoy}, we show that three-colored Frobenius partition function $\c3$ and related arithmetic fuction $\cc3$ vanish modulo some powers of 5 in certain arithmetic progressions.
Let $ped(n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ wherein even parts are distinct (and odd parts are unrestricted). We show infinite families of congruences for $ped(n)$ modulo $8$. We also examine the behavior of $ped_{-2}(n)$ modulo $8$ in detail where $ped_{-2}(n)$ denotes the number of bipartitions of $n$ with even parts distinct. As a result, we find infinite families of congruences for $ped_{2}(n)$ modulo $8$.
Denote by $p(n)$ the number of partitions of $n$ and by $N(a,M;n)$ the number of partitions of $n$ with rank congruent to $a$ modulo $M$. By considering the deviation \begin{equation*} D(a,M) := \sum_{n= 0}^{\infty}\left(N(a,M;n) - \frac{p(n)}{M}\right) q^n, \end{equation*} we give new proofs of recent results of Andrews, Berndt, Chan, Kim and Malik on mock theta functions and ranks of partitions. By considering deviations of cranks, we give new proofs of Lewis and Santa-Gadea's rank-crank identities. We revisit ranks and cranks modulus $M=5$ and $7$, with our results on cranks appearing to be…
Let $NT(m, k, n)$ denote the total number of parts in the partitions of n with rank congruent to m modulo k. Andrews proved Beck's conjecture on congruences for $NT(m, k, n)$ modulo 5 and 7. Generalizing Andrews'results, Chern obtain congruences for $NT(m, k, n)$ modulo 11 and 13. More recently, the second author use the theory of Hecke operators to establish congruences for such partition statistics modulo powers of primes $\ell \ge 7$. In this paper, we obtain Andrews-Beck type congruences modulo powers of 5.
Recently the author introduced two new integer partition quadruple functions, which satisfy Ramanujan-type congruences modulo $3$, $5$, $7$, and $13$. Here we reprove the congruences modulo $3$, $5$, and $7$ by defining a rank-type statistic that gives a combinatorial refinement of the congruences.
Recently, Andrews, Hirschhorn and Sellers have proven congruences modulo 3 for four types of partitions using elementary series manipulations. In this paper, we generalize their congruences using arithmetic properties of certain quadratic forms.
New congruences are found for Andrews' smallest parts partition function spt(n). The generating function for spt(n) is related to the holomorphic part alpha(24z) of a certain weak Maass form M(z) of weight 3/2. We show that a normalized form of the generating function for spt(n) is an eigenform modulo 72 for the Hecke operators T(p^2) for primes p > 3, and an eigenform modulo t for t = 5, 7 or 13 provided that (t, 6p) = 1. The result for the modulus 3 was observed earlier by the author and considered by Ono and Folsom. Similar congruences for higher powers of t (namely 5^6, 7^4 and 13^2) occur…
The partition function $ p_{[1^c11^d]}(n)$ can be defined using the generating function, \[\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}p_{[1^c{11}^d]}(n)q^n=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\dfrac{1}{(1-q^n)^c(1-q^{11 n})^d}.\] In this paper, we prove infinite families of congruences for the partition function $ p_{[1^c11^d]}(n)$ modulo powers of $11$ for any integers $c$ and $d$, which generalizes Atkin and Gordon's congruences for powers of the partition function. The proofs use an explicit basis for the vector space of modular functions of the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(11)$.
Let $s(n)$ be the number of 1-shell totally symmetric plane partitions (TSPPs) of $n$. In this paper, an infinite family of congruences modulo powers of $5$ for $s(n)$ will be deduced through an elementary approach. Namely, $$s\left(2\cdot 5^{2α-1}n+5^{2α-1}\right)\equiv 0 \pmod{5^α}.$$
Congruences are found modulo powers of 5, 7 and 13 for Andrews' smallest parts partition function spt(n). These congruences are reminiscent of Ramanujan's partition congruences modulo powers of 5, 7 and 11. Recently, Ono proved explicit Ramanujan-type congruences for spt(n) modulo p for all primes p>3 which were conjectured earlier by the author. We extend Ono's method to handle the powers of 5, 7 and 13 congruences. We need the theory of weak Maass forms as well as certain classical modular equations for the Dedekind eta-function.
We prove several Ramanujan-type congruences modulo powers of $5$ for partition $k$-tuples with $5$-cores, for $k=2, 3, 4$. We also prove some new infinite families of congruences modulo powers of primes for $k$-tuples with $p$-cores, where $p$ is a prime.
Let $b(n)$ denote the number of cubic partition pairs of $n$. In this paper, we aim to provide a strategy to obtain arithmetic properties of $b(n)$. This gives affirmative answers to two of Lin's conjectures.
We compute the congruence class modulo 16 of the number of unique path partitions of $n$ (as defined by Olsson), thus generalising previous results by Bessenrodt, Olsson and Sellers [Ann. Combin. 13 (2013), 591-602].
Let $b_\ell(n)$ be the number of $\ell$-regular partitions of $n$. Recently, Hou et al established several infinite families of congruences for $b_\ell(n)$ modulo $m$, where $(\ell,m)=(3,3),(6,3),(5,5),(10,5)$ and $(7,7)$. In this paper, by the vanishing property given by Hou et al, we show an infinite family of congruence for $b_{11}(n)$ modulo $11$. Moreover, for $\ell= 3, 13$ and $25$, we obtain three infinite families of congruences for $b_{\ell}(n)$ modulo $3, 5$ and $13$ by the theory of Hecke eigenforms.
In this paper we study $b_5(n)$, the $5$-regular partitions of $n$. Using the theory of modular forms, we prove several theorems on the divisibility and distribution properties of $b_5(n)$ modulo prime $m\geq5$. In particular, we prove that there are infinitely many Ramanujan-type congruences modulo prime $m\geq5$.
For a positive integer $t$, let $b_{t}(n)$ denote the number of $t$-regular partitions of a nonnegative integer $n$. In a recent paper, Keith and Zanello established infinite families of congruences and self-similarity results modulo $2$ for $b_{t}(n)$ for certain values of $t$. Further, they proposed some conjectures on self-similarities of $b_t(n)$ modulo $2$ for certain values of $t$. In this paper, we prove their conjectures on $b_3(n)$ and $b_{25}(n)$. We also prove a self-similarity result for $b_{21}(n)$ modulo $2$.
Folsom, Kent, and Ono used the theory of modular forms modulo $\ell$ to establish remarkable ``self-similarity'' properties of the partition function and give an overarching explanation of many partition congruences. We generalize their work to analyze powers $p_r$ of the partition function as well as Andrews's spt-function. By showing that certain generating functions reside in a small space made up of reductions of modular forms, we set up a general framework for congruences for $p_r$ and spt on arithmetic progressions of the form $\ell^mn+δ$ modulo powers of $\ell$. Our work gives a concept…
It is widely believed that the parity of the partition function $p(n)$ is ``random.'' Contrary to this expectation, in this note we prove the existence of infinitely many congruence relations modulo 4 among its values. For each square-free integer $1<D\equiv 23\pmod{24},$ we construct a weight 2 meromorphic modular form that is congruent modulo 4 to a certain twisted generating function for the numbers $p\big(\frac{Dm^2+1}{24}\big)\pmod 4$. We prove the existence of infinitely many linear dependence congruences modulo 4 among suitable sets of holomorphic normalizations of these series. These r…
The notion of broken $k$-diamond partitions was introduced by Andrews and Paule. Let $Δ_k(n)$ denote the number of broken k-diamond partitions of $n$. They also posed three conjectures on the congruences of $Δ_2(n)$ modulo 2, 5 and 25. Hirschhorn and sellers proved the conjectures for modulo 2, and Chan proved cases of modulo 5. For the case of modulo 3, Radu and Sellers obtained an infinite family of congruences for $Δ_2(n)$. In this paper, we obtain two infinite families of congruences for $Δ_2(n)$ modulo 3 based on a formula of Radu and Sellers, the 3-dissection formula of the generating fu…
Let $cϕ_{k}(n)$ be the number of $k$-colored generalized Frobenius partitions of $n$. We establish some infinite families of congruences for $cϕ_{3}(n)$ and $cϕ_{9}(n)$ modulo arbitrary powers of 3, which refine the results of Kolitsch. For example, for $k\ge 3$ and $n\ge 0$, we prove that \[cϕ_{3}\Big(3^{2k}n+\frac{7\cdot 3^{2k}+1}{8}\Big) \equiv 0 \pmod{3^{4k+5}}.\] We give two different proofs to the congruences satisfied by $cϕ_{9}(n)$. One of the proofs uses an relation between $cϕ_{9}(n)$ and $cϕ_{3}(n)$ due to Kolitsch, for which we provide a new proof in this paper.
We prove that the coefficients of certain mock theta functions possess no linear congruences modulo 3. We prove similar results for the moduli 2 and 3 for a wide class of weakly holomorphic modular forms and discuss applications. This extends work of Radu on the behavior of the ordinary partition function modulo 2 and 3.
For a positive integer $\ell$, let $b_{\ell}(n)$ denote the number of $\ell$-regular partitions of a nonnegative integer $n$. Motivated by some recent conjectures of Keith and Zanello, we establish infinite families of congruences modulo $2$ for $b_3(n)$ and $b_{21}(n)$. We prove a specific case of a conjecture of Keith and Zanello on self-similarities of $b_3(n)$ modulo $2$. We next prove that the series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}b_9(2n+1)q^n$ is lacunary modulo arbitrary powers of $2$. We also prove that the series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}b_9(4n)q^n$ is lacunary modulo $2$.
Let $f(n)$ denote the number of 1-shell totally symmetric plane partitions of weight $n$. Recently, Hirschhorn and Sellers, Yao, and Xia established a number of congruences modulo 2 and 5, 4 and 8, and 25 for $f(n)$, respectively. In this note, we shall prove several new congruences modulo 125 and 11 by using some results of modular forms. For example, for all $n\ge 0$, we have \begin{align*} f(1250n+125)&\equiv 0 \pmod{125},\\ f(1250n+1125)&\equiv 0 \pmod{125},\\ f(2750n+825)&\equiv 0 \pmod{11},\\ f(2750n+1925)&\equiv 0 \pmod{11}. \end{align*}
