In Part I of our study on 2D Euler equation, we established the spectral theorem for a linearized 2D Euler equation. We also computed the point spectrum through continued fractions, and identified the eigenvalues with nonzero real parts. In this Part II of our study, first we discuss the Lax pairs for both 2D and 3D Euler equations. The existence of Lax pairs suggests that the hyperbolic foliations of 2D and 3D Euler equations may be degenerate, i.e., there exist homoclinic structures. Then we investigate the question on the degeneracy v.s. nondegeneracy of the hyperbolic foliations for Galerk…
In this article, we will report the recent developments on Lax pairs and Darboux transformations for Euler equations of inviscid fluids.
Recently, the author and collaborators have developed a systematic program for proving the existence of homoclinic orbits in partial differential equations. Two typical forms of homoclinic orbits thus obtained are: (1). transversal homoclinic orbits, (2). Silnikov homoclinic orbits. Around the transversal homoclinic orbits in infinite dimensional autonomous systems, the author was able to prove the existence of chaos through a shadowing lemma. Around the Silnikov homoclinic orbits, the author was able to prove the existence of chaos through a horseshoe construction. Very recently, there has be…

Multi-scale self-similar finite-time blowups of the Constantin-Lax-Majda model for the 3D Euler equations

The gauge-invariant description of zero-curvature representations of evolution equations is applied to the problem of how to distinguish the fake Lax pairs from the true Lax pairs. The main difference between the true Lax pairs and the fake ones is found in the structure of their cyclic bases.
In this article, I will report a Lax pair structure, a Backlund-Darboux transformation, and the investigation of homoclinic structures for 2D Euler equations of incompressible inviscid fluids.
We propose a two-dimensional generalization of Constantin-Lax-Majda model [2]. Some results about singular solutions are given. This model might be the first step toward the singular solutions of the Euler equations. Along the same line (vorticity formulation), we present some further model equations. They possibly models various aspects of difficulties related with the singular solutions of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. We also make some discussions on the possible connection between turbulence and the singular solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.
The integrability of a coupled KdV-mKdV system is tested by means of singularity analysis. The true Lax pair associated with this system is obtained by the use of prolongation technique.
We consider the half-wave maps equation $$ \partial_t \vec{S} = \vec{S} \wedge |\nabla| \vec{S}, $$ where $\vec{S}= \vec{S}(t,x)$ takes values on the two-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ and $x \in \mathbb{R}$ (real line case) or $x \in \mathbb{T}$ (periodic case). This an energy-critical Hamiltonian evolution equation recently introduced in \cite{LS,Zh}, which formally arises as an effective evolution equation in the classical and continuum limit of Haldane-Shastry quantum spin chains. We prove that the half-wave maps equation admits a Lax pair and we discuss some analytic consequences …
Under investigation in this work is the coupled Sasa-Satsuma equation, which can describe the propagations of two optical pulse envelopes in birefringent fibers. The Riemann-Hilbert problem for the equation is formulated on the basis of the corresponding $5\times5$ matrix spectral problem, which allows us to present a suitable representation for the solution of the equation. Then the Deift-Zhou steepest descent method is used to analyze the long time behavior of the coupled Sasa-Satsuma equation.

We present a first example of an integrable (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless system with nonisospectral Lax pair involving algebraic, rather than rational, dependence on the spectral parameter, thus showing that the class of integrable (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless systems with nonisospectral Lax pairs is significantly more diverse than it appeared before. The Lax pair in question is of the type recently introduced in [A. Sergyeyev, Lett. Math. Phys. 108 (2018), no. 2, 359-376, arXiv:1401.2122 ].
We prove that the recently introduced spin Benjamin--Ono equation admits a Lax pair, and we deduce a family of conservation laws which allow to prove global wellposedness in all Sobolev spaces $H^k$ for every integer $k\geq 2$. We also infer an additional family of matrix valued conservation laws, of which the previous family are just the traces.
We investigate the initial-boundary value problem for the integrable spin-1 Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations with a 4x4 Lax pair on the half-line. The solution of this system can be obtained in terms of the solution of a 4x4 matrix Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problem formulated in the complex k-plane. The relevant jump matrices of the RH problem can be explicitly found using the two spectral functions s(k) and S(k), which can be defined by the initial data, the Dirichlet-Neumann boundary data at x=0. The global relation is established between the two dependent spectral functions. The general mappings …
We derive a Riemann--Hilbert representation for the solution of an integrable nonlinear evolution equation with a $3 \times 3$ Lax pair. We use the derived representation to obtain formulas for the long-time asymptotics.
The search for new integrable (3+1)-dimensional partial differential systems is among the most important challenges in the modern integrability theory. It turns out that such a system can be associated to any pair of rational functions of one variable in general position, as established below using contact Lax pairs introduced in arXiv:1401.2122.
We develop an elementary method to give a Lipschitz estimate for the minimizers in the problem of Herglotz' variational principle proposed in \cite{CCWY2018} in the time-dependent case. We deduce Erdmann's condition and the Euler-Lagrange equation separately under different sets of assumptions, by using a generalized du Bois-Reymond lemma. As an application, we obtain a representation formula for the viscosity solution of the Cauchy problem for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation \begin{align*} D_tu(t,x)+H(t,x,D_xu(t,x),u(t,x))=0 \end{align*} and study the related Lax-Oleinik evolution.
We present an approach for analyzing initial-boundary value problems for integrable equations whose Lax pairs involve $3 \times 3$ matrices. Whereas initial value problems for integrable equations can be analyzed by means of the classical Inverse Scattering Transform (IST), the presence of a boundary presents new challenges. Over the last fifteen years, an extension of the IST formalism developed by Fokas and his collaborators has been successful in analyzing boundary value problems for several of the most important integrable equations with $2 \times 2$ Lax pairs, such as the Korteweg-de Vrie…
We define compressive and rarefactive waves and give the differential equations describing smooth wave steepening for the compressible Euler equations with a varying entropy profile and general pressure laws. Using these differential equations, we directly generalize P. Lax's singularity (shock) formation results for hyperbolic systems with two variables to the compressible Euler equations for a polytropic ideal gas. Our results are valid globally without restriction on the size of the variation of initial data.
We prove the existence of a Lax pair for the Calogero Korteweg-de Vries (CKdV) equation. Moreover, we modify the T operator in the the Lax pair of the CKdV equation, in the search of a (2+1)-dimensional case and thereby propose a new equation in (2+1) dimensions. We named this the (2+1)-dimensional CKdV equation. We show that the CKdV equation as well as the (2+1)-dimensional CKdV equation are integrable in the sense that they possess the Painlevé property. Some exact solutions are also constructed.
This paper develops two approaches to Lax-integrbale systems with spatiotemporally varying coefficients. A technique based on extended Lax Pairs is first considered to derive variable-coefficient generalizations of various Lax-integrable NLPDE hierarchies recently introduced in the literature. As illustrative examples, we consider generalizations of the NLS and DNLS equations, as well as a PT-symmetric version of the NLS equation. It is demonstrated that the techniques yield Lax- or S-integrable NLPDEs with both time- AND space-dependent coefficients which are thus more general than almost all…
In this paper we study the finite time blow-up problem for the axisymmetric 3D incompressible Euler equations with swirl. The evolution equations for the deformation tensor and the vorticity are reduced considerably in this case. Under the assumption of local minima for the pressure on the axis of symmetry with respect to the radial variations we show that the solution blows-up in finite time. If we further assume that the second radial derivative vanishes on the axis, then system reduces to the form of Constantin-Lax-Majda equations, and can be integrated explicitly.
