This paper determines values of intersection exponents between packs of planar Brownian motions in the half-plane and in the plane that were not derived in our first two papers. For instance, it is proven that the exponent $ξ(3,3)$ describing the asymptotic decay of the probability of non-intersection between two packs of three independent planar Brownian motions each is $(73-2 \sqrt {73}) / 12$. More generally, the values of $ξ(w_1, >..., w_k)$ and $\tx (w_1', ..., w_k')$ are determined for all $ k \ge 2$, $w_1, w_2\ge 1$, $w_3, ...,w_k\in[0,\infty)$ and all $w_1',...,w_k'\in[0,\infty)$. The proof relies on the results derived in our first two papers and applies the same general methods. We first find the two-sided exponents for the stochastic Loewner evolution processes in a half-plane, from which the Brownian intersection exponents are determined via a universality argument.
We consider the system of one-sided reflected Brownian motions which is in variational duality with Brownian last passage percolation. We show that it has integrable transition probabilities, expressed in terms of Hermite polynomials and hitting times of exponential random walks, and that it converges in the 1:2:3 scaling limit to the KPZ fixed point, the scaling invariant Markov process defined in [MQR17] and believed to govern the long time large scale fluctuations for all models in the KPZ universality class. Brownian last passage percolation was shown recently in [DOV18] to converge to the…

We consider an infinite system of Brownian motions which interact through a given Brownian motion being reflected from its left neighbor. Earlier we studied this system for deterministic periodic initial configurations. In this contribution we consider initial configurations distributed according to a Poisson point process with constant intensity, which makes the process space-time stationary. We prove convergence to the Airy process for stationary the case. As a byproduct we obtain a novel representation of the finite-dimensional distributions of this process. Our method differs from the one …
We consider Brownian motions with one-sided collisions, meaning that each particle is reflected at its right neighbour. For a finite number of particles a Schütz-type formula is derived for the transition probability. We investigate an infinite system with periodic initial configuration, that is, particles are located at the integer lattice at time zero. The joint distribution of the positions of a finite subset of particles is expressed as a Fredholm determinant with a kernel defining a signed determinantal point process. In the appropriate large time scaling limit, the fluctuations in the pa…
We consider the one-sided exit problem for fractional Brownian motion (FBM), which is equivalent to the question of the distribution of the lower tail of the maximum of FBM on the unit interval. We improve the bounds given by Molchan (1999) and shed some light on the relation to the quantity $I$ studied there.
Two-sided infinite systems of Brownian particles with rank-dependent dynamics, indexed by all integers, exhibit different properties from their one-sided infinite counterparts, indexed by positive integers, and from finite systems. Consider the gap process, which is formed by spacings between adjacent particles. In stark contrast with finite and one-sided infinite systems, two-sided infinite systems can have one- or two-parameter family of stationary gap distributions, or the gap process weakly converging to zero as time goes to infinity.
Results of penalization of a one-dimensional Brownian motion $(X_t) $, by its one-sided maximum $\dis (S_t=\sup_{0 \leq u \leq t}X_u)$, which were recently obtained by the authors are improved with the consideration-in the present paper- of the asymptotic behaviour of the likewise penalized Brownian bridges of length $t$, as $t\to \infty$, or penalizations by functions of $(S_t,X_t)$, and also the study of the speed of convergence, as $t\to \infty$, of the penalized distributions at time $t$.
Sticky Brownian motion on the real line can be obtained as a weak solution of a system of stochastic differential equations. We find the conditional distribution of the process given the driving Brownian motion, both at an independent exponential time and at a fixed time t>0. As a classical problem, we find the distribution of the occupation times of a half-line, and at 0, which is the sticky point for the process.
This paper gives an accessible (but still technical) self-contained proof to the fact that the intersection probabilities for planar Brownian motion are given in terms of the intersection exponents, up to a bounded multiplicative error, and some closely related results. While most of the results are already known, the proofs are somewhat new, and the paper can serve as a source for the estimates used in our paper on the analyticity of the Brownian intersection exponents (math.PR/0005295).
Let $S^{1},S^{2}$ be independent simple random walks in $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ ($d=2,3$) started at the origin. We construct two-sided random walk paths conditioned that $S^{1}[0,\infty) \cap S^{2}[1, \infty) = \emptyset$.
In this work we present expansions of intersection local times of fractional Brownian motions in $\R^d$, for any dimension $d\geq 1$, with arbitrary Hurst coefficients in $(0,1)^d$. The expansions are in terms of Wick powers of white noises (corresponding to multiple Wiener integrals), being well-defined in the sense of generalized white noise functionals. As an application of our approach, a sufficient condition on $d$ for the existence of intersection local times in $L^2$ is derived, extending the results of D. Nualart and S. Ortiz-Latorre in "Intersection Local Time for Two Independent Frac…
A subordinate Brownian motion is a Lévy process which can be obtained by replacing the time of the Brownian motion by an independent subordinator. The infinitesimal generator of a subordinate Brownian motion is $-ϕ(-Δ)$, where $ϕ$ is the Laplace exponent of the subordinator. In this paper, we consider a large class of subordinate Brownian motions without diffusion component and with $ϕ$ comparable to a regularly varying function at infinity. This class of processes includes symmetric stable processes, relativistic stable processes, sums of independent symmetric stable processes, sums of indepe…
We extend to Markov-modulated Brownian motion (MMBM) the renewal approach which has been successfully applied to the analysis of Markov-modulated fluid models. It has recently been shown that MMBM may be expressed as the limit of a parameterized family of Markov-modulated fluid models. We prove that the weak convergence also holds for systems with two reflecting boundaries, one at zero and one at $b >0$, and that the stationary distributions of the approximating fluid models converge to the stationary distribution of the two-sided reflected MMBM. Thus, we obtain a new representation for the st…
Let H(t,x) be the Hopf-Cole solution at time t of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation starting with narrow wedge initial condition, i.e. the logarithm of the solution of the multiplicative stochastic heat equation starting from a Dirac delta. Also let H^{eq}(t,x) be the solution at time t of the KPZ equation with the same noise, but with initial condition given by a standard two-sided Brownian motion, so that H^{eq}(t,x)-H^{eq}(0,x) is itself distributed as a standard two-sided Brownian motion. We provide a simple proof of the following fact: for fixed t, H(t,x)-(H(t,x)-H^{eq}(t,0)) is loca…
We consider a Markov-modulated Brownian motion $\{Y(t), ρ(t)\}$ with two boundaries at $0$ and $b > 0$, and allow for the controlling Markov chain $\{ρ(t)\}$ to instantaneously undergo a change of phase upon hitting either of the two boundaries at semi-regenerative epochs defined to be the first time the process reaches a boundary since it last hits the other boundary. We call this process a flexible Markov-modulated Brownian motion. Using the recently-established links between stochastic fluid models and Markov-modulated Brownian motions, we determine important characteristics of first exit t…
In this paper we study a reflected Markov-modulated Brownian motion with a two sided reflection in which the drift, diffusion coefficient and the two boundaries are (jointly) modulated by a finite state space irreducible continuous time Markov chain. The goal is to compute the stationary distribution of this Markov process, which in addition to the complication of having a stochastic boundary can also include jumps at state change epochs of the underlying Markov chain because of the boundary changes. We give the general theory and then specialize to the case where the underlying Markov chain h…
On the exponential integrability of the derivative of intersection and self-intersection local time for fractional Brownian motion and a limit theorem related to the self-intersection local time for fractional Brownian motion
We derive a simple integral representation for the distribution of the maximum of Brownian motion minus a parabola, which can be used for computing the density and moments of the distribution, both for one-sided and two-sided Brownian motion.
We revisit a result of Uchiyama (1980): given that a certain integral test is satisfied, the rate of the probability that Brownian motion remains below the moving boundary $f$ is asymptotically the same as for the constant boundary. The integral test for $f$ is also necessary in some sense. After Uchiyama's result, a number of different proofs appeared simplifying the original arguments, which strongly rely on some known identities for Brownian motion. In particular, Novikov (1996) gives an elementary proof in the case of an increasing boundary. Here, we provide an elementary, half-page proof …
In this paper, we derive explicit sharp two-sided estimates for the Dirichlet heat kernels, in C^{1,1} open sets D in R^d, of a large class of subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components. When D is bounded, our sharp two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates hold for all t>0. Integrating the heat kernel estimates with respect to the time variable t, we obtain sharp two-sided estimates for the Green functions, in bounded C^{1,1} open sets, of such subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components.
We study the persistence probability for some two-sided discrete-time Gaussian sequences that are discrete-time analogs of fractional Brownian motion and integrated fractional Brownian motion, respectively. Our results extend the corresponding ones in continuous-time in [Molchan, Commun. Math. Phys., 1999] and [Molchen, J. Stat. Phys., 2017] to a wide class of discrete-time processes.
We prove the existence of the intersection local time for two independent, d -dimensional fractional Brownian motions with the same Hurst parameter H. Assume d greater or equal to 2, then the intersection local time exists if and only if Hd<2.
Let $N$ be a positive integer, $c$ be a positive constant and $(U_n)_{n\ge 1}$ be a sequence of independent identically distributed pseudo-random variables. We assume that the $U_n$'s take their values in the discrete set $\{-N,-N+1,...,N-1,N\}$ and that their common pseudo-distribution is characterized by the \textit{(positive or negative) real} numbers \[\mathbb{P}\{U_n=k\}=δ_{k0}+(-1)^{k-1} c\binom{2N}{k+N}\] for any $k\in\{-N,-N+1,...,N-1,N\}$. Let us finally introduce $(S_n)_{n\ge 0}$ the associated pseudo-random walk defined on $\mathbb{Z}$ by $S_0=0$ and $S_n=\sum_{j=1}^n U_j$ for $n\ge…
We prove that the self-intersection local times for generalized grey Brownian motion $B^{β,α}$ in arbitrary dimension $d$ is a well defined object in a suitable distribution space for $dα<2$.
We show that the intersection exponents for planar Brownian motions are analytic. More precisely, let $B$ and $B'$ be independent planar Brownian motions started from distinct points, and define the exponent $ξ(1, λ)$ by $$ E[P[B[0,t] \cap B'[0,t] = \emptyset | B[0,t]]^λ] \approx t^{-ξ(1, λ)/2}, t \to \infty. $$ Then the mapping $λ\mapsto ξ(1, λ)$ is real analytic in $(0,\infty)$. The same result is proved for the exponents $ξ(k, λ)$ where $k$ is a positive integer. In combination with the determination of $ξ(k, λ)$ for integer $k \ge 1$ and real $λ\ge 1$ in our previous papers, this gives the…
In this paper we compute the $\frac 43$-variation of the derivative of the self-intersection Brownian local time $γ_t=\int_0^t \int_0^u δ'(B_u-B_s)dsdu\,, t\ge 0$, applying techniques from the theory of fractional martingales.
The existence condition $H<1/d$ for first-order derivative of self-intersection local time for $d\geq3$ dimensional fractional Brownian motion can be obtained in Yu (2021). In this paper, we show a limit theorem under the non-existence critical condition $H=1/d$.
This paper proves conjectures originating in the physics literature regarding the intersection exponents of Brownian motion in a half-plane. For instance, suppose that B and B' are two independent planar Brownian motions started from distinct points in a half-plane H. Then, as $t \to \infty$, $$ P [ B[0,t] \cap B'[0,t] = \emptyset, B[0,t] \cup B'[0,t] \subset H ] = t^{-5/3 + o(1)}.$$ The proofs use ideas and tools developped by the authors in previous papers. We prove that one of the stochastic Loewner evolution processes (with parameter 6, that we will call SLE_6 and which has been conjecture…
We derive the exact value of intersection exponents between planar Brownian motions or random walks, confirming predictions from theoretical physics by Duplantier and Kwon. Let B and B' be independent Brownian motions (or simple random walks) in the plane, started from distinct points. We prove that the probability that the paths B[0,t] and B'[0,t] do not intersect decays like t^{-5/8}. More precisely, there is a constant c>0 such that if |B(0) - B'(0)| =1, for all t \ge 1, c^{-1} t^{-5/8} \le ¶[ B[0,t] \cap B'[0,t] = \emptyset ] \le c t^{-5/8}. One consequence is that the set of cut-points of…
We consider the existence and Hölder continuity conditions for the $k$-th order derivatives of self-intersection local time for $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion, where $k=(k_1,k_2,\cdots, k_d)$. Moreover, we show a limit theorem for the critical case with $H=\frac{2}{3}$ and $d=1$, which was conjectured by Jung and Markowsky (2014).
In this article, we obtain sharp conditions for the existence of the high order derivatives ($k$-th order) of intersection local time $ \widehatα^{(k)}(0)$ of two independent d-dimensional fractional Brownian motions $B^{H_1}_t$ and $\widetilde{B}^{H_2}_s$ with Hurst parameters $H_1$ and $H_2$, respectively. We also study their exponential integrability.
We relate the formulas giving Brownian (and other) intersection exponents to the absolute continuity relations between Bessel process of different dimensions, via the two-parameter family of Schramm-Loewner Evolution processes SLE(kappa, rho) introduced in arXiv:math.PR/0209343. This allows also to compute the value of some new exponents (``hiding exponents'') related to SLEs and planar Brownian motions.
In this article we establish some estimates related to the Gaussian densities and to Hermite polynomials in order to obtain an almost sure estimate for each term of the Itô-Wiener expansion of the self-intersection local times of the Brownian motion. In dimension $d\geqslant 4$ the self-intersection local times of the Brownian motion can be considered as a family of measures on the classical Wiener space. We provide some asymptotics relative to these measures. Finally, we try to estimate the quadratic Wasserstein distance between these measures and the Wiener measure.
Let \ell be the projected intersection local time of two independent Brownian paths in R^d for d=2,3. We determine the lower tail of the random variable \ell(U), where U is the unit ball. The answer is given in terms of intersection exponents, which are explicitly known in the case of planar Brownian motion. We use this result to obtain the multifractal spectrum, or spectrum of thin points, for the intersection local times.
We study Markov chains on $\mathbb Z^m$, $m\geq 2$, that behave like a standard symmetric random walk outside of the hyperplane (membrane) $H=\{0\}\times \mathbb Z^{m-1}$. The transition probabilities on the membrane $H$ are periodic and also depend on the incoming direction to $H$, what makes the membrane $H$ two-sided. Moreover, sliding along the membrane is allowed. We show that the natural scaling limit of such Markov chains is a $m$-dimensional diffusion whose first coordinate is a skew Brownian motion and the other $m-1$ coordinates is a Brownian motion with a singular drift controlled b…
We study the set of points $\mathcal{D}_{n,m}$ around which two independent Brownian motions wind at least $n$ (resp. $m$) times. We prove that its area is asymptotically equivalent, in $L^p$ and almost surely, to $\frac{\ell(\mathbb{R}^2)}{4π^2 n m}$, where $\ell$ is the intersection measure of the two trajectories. We also prove that the properly scaled Lebesgue measure carried by $\mathcal{D}_{n,m}$ converges almost surely weakly toward $\ell$.
Consider the intersection measure $\ell^{\mathrm{IS}}_t$ of $p$ independent Brownian motions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. In this article, we prove the large deviation principle for the normalized intersection measure $t^{-p}\ell^{\mathrm{IS}}_t$ as $t\rightarrow \infty$, before exiting a (possibly unbounded) domain $D\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ with smooth boundary. This is an extension of [W. König and C. Mukherjee: Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, 66(2):263--306, 2013] which deals with the case $D$ is bounded. Our essential contribution is to prove the so-called super-exponential estimate for…
In this paper we prove exact forms of large deviations for local times and intersection local times of fractional Brownian motions and Riemann-Liouville processes. We also show that a fractional Brownian motion and the related Riemann-Liouville process behave like constant multiples of each other with regard to large deviations for their local and intersection local times. As a consequence of our large deviation estimates, we derive laws of iterated logarithm for the corresponding local times. The key points of our methods: (1) logarithmic superadditivity of a normalized sequence of moments of…

Consider p independent Brownian motions in R^d, each running up to its first exit time from an open domain B, and their intersection local time l as a measure on B. We give a sharp criterion for the finiteness of exponential moments, E[exp(\sum_{i=1}^n (int_B f_i(x) l(dx))^{1/p})], where f_1, ...,f_n are nonnegative, bounded functions with compact support in B. We also derive a law of large numbers for intersection local time conditioned to have large total mass.
Let $B^{α_i}$ be an $(N_i,d)$-fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index ${α_i}$ ($i=1,2$), and let $B^{α_1}$ and $B^{α_2}$ be independent. We prove that, if $\frac{N_1}{α_1}+\frac{N_2}{α_2}>d$, then the intersection local times of $B^{α_1}$ and $B^{α_2}$ exist, and have a continuous version. We also establish Hölder conditions for the intersection local times and determine the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the sets of intersection times and intersection points. One of the main motivations of this paper is from the results of Nualart and Ortiz-Latorre ({\it J. Theor. Probab.} {\bf 20} (…
The main purpose of this work is to define planar self-intersection local time by an alternative approach which is based on an almost sure pathwise approximation of planar Brownian motion by simple, symmetric random walks. As a result, Brownian self-intersection local time is obtained as an almost sure limit of local averages of simple random walk self-intersection local times. An important tool is a discrete version of the Tanaka--Rosen--Yor formula; the continuous version of the formula is obtained as an almost sure limit of the discrete version. The author hopes that this approach to self-i…
Consider the optimal stopping problem of a one-dimensional diffusion with positive discount. Based on Dynkin's characterization of the value as the minimal excessive majorant of the reward and considering its Riesz representation, we give an explicit equation to find the optimal stopping threshold for problems with one-sided stopping regions, and an explicit formula for the value function of the problem. This representation also gives light on the validity of the smooth fit principle. The results are illustrated by solving some classical problems, and also through the solution of: optimal stop…
There is a close connection between intersections of Brownian motion paths and percolation on trees. Recently, ideas from probability on trees were an important component of the multifractal analysis of Brownian occupation measure, in joint work with A. Dembo, J. Rosen and O. Zeitouni. As a consequence, we proved two conjectures about simple random walk in two dimensions: The first, due to Erdős and Taylor (1960), involves the number of visits to the most visited lattice site in the first $n$ steps of the walk. The second, due to Aldous (1989), concerns the number of steps it takes a simple ra…
The $h$-trimming of a tree is a natural regularization procedure which consists in pruning the small branches of a tree: given $h\geq0$, it is obtained by only keeping the vertices having at least one leaf above them at a distance greater or equal to $h$. The $h$-cut of a function $f$ is the function of minimal total variation uniformly approximating the increments of $f$ with accuracy $h$, and can be explicitly constructed via the two-sided Skorohod reflection of $f$ on the interval $[0,h]$. In this work, we show that the contour path of the $h$-trimming of a rooted real tree is given by the …
An unbiased shift of the two-sided Brownian motion $(B_t \colon t\in{\mathbb R})$ is a random time $T$ such that $(B_{T+t} \colon t\in{\mathbb R})$ is still a two-sided Brownian motion. Given a pair $μ, ν$ of orthogonal probability measures, an unbiased shift $T$ solves the embedding problem, if $B_0\simμ$ implies $B_{T}\simν$. A solution to this problem was given by Last et al. (2014), based on earlier work of Bertoin and Le Jan (1992), and Holroyd and Liggett (2001). In this note we show that this solution minimises ${\mathbb E} ψ(T)$ over all nonnegative unbiased solutions $T$, simultaneous…
Let X^{1}, X^{2} be two independent (two-sided) fractional Brownian motions having the same Hurst parameter H in (0,1), and let Y be a standard (one-sided) Brownian motion independent of (X^{1},X^{2}). In dimension 2, fractional Brownian motion in Brownian motion time (of index H) is, by definition, the process Z_t:= (Z^1_t, Z^2_t)= (X^{1}_{Y_t},X^{2}_{Y_t}). The main result of the present paper is an Ito's type formula for f(Z_t), when f:\R^2\to\R is smooth and H in [ 1/6,1). When H>1/6, the change-of-variable formula we obtain is similar to that of the classical calculus. In the critical cas…
Let $\{B_{t}\}_{t\geq0}$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $0<H<1$, where $d\geq2$. Consider the approximation of the self-intersection local time of $B$, defined as \begin{align*} I_{T}^{\varepsilon} &=\int_{0}^{T}\int_{0}^{t}p_{\varepsilon}(B_{t}-B_{s})dsdt, \end{align*} where $p_\varepsilon(x)$ is the heat kernel. We prove that the process $\{I_{T}^{\varepsilon}-\mathbb{E}\left[I_{T}^{\varepsilon}\right]\}_{T\geq0}$, rescaled by a suitable normalization, converges in law to a constant multiple of a standard Brownian motion for $\frac{3}{2d}<H\leq\frac{3}{4…
We show that the construction of a random continuum $\mathcal{C}$ from independent two-sided Brownian motions as considered in arXiv:2004.01367 almost surely yields a non-degenerate indecomposable but not-hereditary indecomposable continuum. In particular $\mathcal{C}$ is (unfortunately) not the pseudo-arc.
