We consider the problem of finding commuting self-adjoint extensions of the partial derivatives {(1/i)(\partial/\partial x_j):j=1,...,d} with domain C_c^\infty(Ω) where the self-adjointness is defined relative to L^2(Ω), and Ωis a given open subset of R^d. The measure on Ωis Lebesgue measure on R^d restricted to Ω. The problem originates with I.E. Segal and B. Fuglede, and is difficult in general. In this paper, we provide a representation-theoretic answer in the special case when Ω=I\timesΩ_2 and I is an open interval. We then apply the results to the case when Ωis a d-cube, I^d, and we describe possible subsets Λof R^d such that {e^(i2πλ\dot x) restricted to I^d:λ\inΛ} is an orthonormal basis in L^2(I^d).
Using an abstract notion of semiclassical quantization for self-adjoint operators, we prove that the joint spectrum of a collection of commuting semiclassical self-adjoint operators converges to the classical spectrum given by the joint image of the principal symbols, in the semiclassical limit. This includes Berezin-Toeplitz quantization and certain cases of $\hbar$-pseudodifferential quantization, for instance when the symbols are uniformly bounded, and extends a result by L. Polterovich and the authors. In the last part of the paper we review the recent solution to the inverse problem for q…
Let $A$ and $B$ be almost commuting (i.e, $AB-BA\in\bS_1$) self-adjoint operators. We construct a functional calculus $\f\mapsto\f(A,B)$ for $\f$ in the Besov class $B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$. This functional calculus is linear, the operators $\f(A,B)$ and $ψ(A,B)$ almost commute for $\f,\,ψ\in B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$, $\f(A,B)=u(A)v(B)$ whenever $\f(s,t)=u(s)v(t)$, and the Helton--Howe trace formula holds. The main tool is triple operator integrals.
Let $(A_1,\cdots,A_n)$ and $(B_1,\cdots,B_n)$ be $n$-tuples of commuting self-adjoint operators on Hilbert space. For functions $f$ on $\R^n$ satisfying certain conditions, we obtain sharp estimates of the operator norms (or norms in operator ideals) of $f(A_1,\cdots,A_n)-f(B_1,\cdots,B_n)$ in terms of the corresponding norms of $A_j-B_j$, $1\le j\le n$. We obtain analogs of earlier results on estimates for functions of perturbed self-adjoint and normal operators. It turns out that for $n\ge3$, the methods that were used for self-adjoint and normal operators do not work. We propose a new metho…
Given a self-adjoint involution J on a Hilbert space H, we consider a J-self-adjoint operator L=A+V on H where A is a possibly unbounded self-adjoint operator commuting with J and V a bounded J-self-adjoint operator anti-commuting with J. We establish optimal estimates on the position of the spectrum of L with respect to the spectrum of A and we obtain norm bounds on the operator angles between maximal uniformly definite reducing subspaces of the unperturbed operator A and the perturbed operator L. All the bounds are given in terms of the norm of V and the distances between pairs of disjoint s…
The purpose of the paper is to obtain estimates for differences of functions of two pairs of commuting contractions on Hilbert space. In particular, Lipschitz type estimates, Hölder type estimates, Schatten--von Neumann estimates are obtained. The results generalize earlier known results for functions of self-adjoint operators, normal operators, contractions and dissipative operators.
We generalize earlier results of Peller, Aleksandrov - Peller, Aleksandrov - Peller - Potapov - Sukochev to the case of functions of $n$-tuples of commuting self-adjoint operators. In particular, we prove that if a function $f$ belongs to the Besov space $B_{\be,1}^1(\R^n)$, then $f$ is operator Lipschitz and we show that if $f$ satisfies a Hölder condition of order $\a$, then $\|f(A_1...,A_n)-f(B_1,...,B_n)\|\le\const\max_{1\le j\le n}\|A_j-B_j\|^\a$ for all $n$-tuples of commuting self-adjoint operators $(A_1,...,A_n)$ and $(B_1,...,B_n)$. We also consider the case of arbitrary moduli of con…
In this paper we study properties of functions of triples of not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators. The main result of the paper shows that unlike in the case of functions of pairs of self-adjoint operators there is no Lipschitz type estimates in the trace norm for arbitrary functions in the Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^3)$.
Let $f$ be a function on ${\Bbb R}^2$ in the inhomogeneous Besov space $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$. For a pair $(A,B)$ of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators, we define the function $f(A,B)$ of $A$ and $B$ as a densely defined linear operator. We show that if $1\le p\le2$, $(A_1,B_1)$ and $(A_2,B_2)$ are pairs of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators such that both $A_1-A_2$ and $B_1-B_2$ belong to the Schatten--von Neumann class $\boldsymbol{S}_p$ and $f$ is in the above inhomogeneous Besov space, then the follow…
For a pair $(A,B)$ of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators and for a function $f$ on the Euclidean space ${\Bbb R}^2$ that belongs to the inhomogeneous Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$, we define the function $f(A,B)$ of these operators as a densely defined operator. We consider the problem of estimating the functions $f(A,B)$ under perturbations of the pair $(A,B)$. It is established that if $1\le p\le2$, and $(A_1,B_1)$ and $(A_2,B_2)$ are pairs of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators such that the operat…
We recall a Moure theory adapted to non self-adjoint operators and we apply this theory to Schr{ö}dinger operators with non real potentials, using different type of conjugate operators. We show that some conjugate operators permits to relax conditions on the derivatives of the potential that were required up to now.
We consider a large class of self-adjoint elliptic problem associated with the second derivative acting on a space of vector-valued functions. We present two different approaches to the study of the associated eigenvalues problems. The first, more general one allows to replace a secular equation (which is well-known in some special cases) by an abstract rank condition. The latter seems to apply particularly well to a specific boundary condition, sometimes dubbed "anti-Kirchhoff" in the literature, that arise in the theory of differential operators on graphs; it also permits to discuss interest…
We consider the standard hypergeometric differential operator $D$ regarded as an operator on the complex plane $C$ and the complex conjugate operator $\overline D$. These operators formally commute and are formally adjoint one to another with respect to an appropriate weight. We find conditions when they commute in the Nelson sense and write explicitly their joint spectral decomposition. It is determined by a two-dimensional counterpart of the Jacobi transform (synonyms: generalized Mehler--Fock transform, Olevskii transform). We also show that the inverse transform is an operator of spectral …
We investigate the connections between Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators and the theory of $n$-entire operators. As our main result we find a necessary and sufficient condition for a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator to be $n$-entire in terms of square integrability of derivatives (w.r.t. the spectral parameter) of the Weyl solution. We also show that this is equivalent to the Weyl function being in a generalized Herglotz-Nevanlinna class. As an application we show that perturbed Bessel operators are $n$-entire, improving the previously known condition…
Let $A$ and $B$ be almost commuting (i.e., the commutator $AB-BA$ belongs to trace class) self-adjoint operators. We construct a functional calculus $φ\mapstoφ(A,B)$ for functions $φ$ in the Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$. This functional calculus is linear, the operators $φ(A,B)$ and $ψ(A,B)$ almost commute for $φ,\,ψ\in B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$, and $φ(A,B)=u(A)v(B)$ whenever $φ(s,t)=u(s)v(t)$. We extend the Helton--Howe trace formula for arbitrary functions in $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$. The main tool is triple operator integrals with integrands in Haagerup-like tensor produc…
In the mid 80's it was conjectured that every bispectral meromorphic function $ψ(x,y)$ gives rise to an integral operator $K_ψ(x,y)$ which possesses a commuting differential operator. This has been verified by a direct computation for several families of functions $ψ(x,y)$ where the commuting differential operator is of order $\leq 6$. We prove a general version of this conjecture for all self-adjoint bispectral functions of rank 1 and all self-adjoint bispectral Darboux transformations of the rank 2 Bessel and Airy functions. The method is based on a theorem giving an exact estimate of the se…
In this paper we consider the problem of the existence of higher derivatives of the function $t\mapsto\f(A+tK)$, where $\f$ is a function on the real line, $A$ is a self-adjoint operator, and $K$ is a bounded self-adjoint operator. We improve earlier results by Sten'kin. In order to do this, we give a new approach to multiple operator integrals. This approach improves the earlier approach given by Sten'kin. We also consider a similar problem for unitary operators.
The notions of magnetic difference operator defined on weighted graphs or magnetic exterior derivative are discrete analogues of the notionof covariant derivative on sections of a fibre bundle and its extension on differential forms. In this paper, we extend this notion to certain 2-simplicial complexes called triangulations, in a manner compatible with changes of gauge. Then we study the magnetic Gauss-Bonnet operator naturally defined in this context and introduce the geometric hypothesis of $χ-$completeness which ensures the essential self-adjointness of this operator. This gives also the e…
We consider self-adjoint extensions of differential operators of the type $ (-\frac{d^2}{dr^2} + \frac{l(l+1)}{r^2})^3 $ on the real semi-axis for l=1,2 with two kinds of boundary conditions: first that nullify the value of a function and its first derivative and second that nullify the 4th (l=1) or the 3rd (l=2) derivative. We calculate the expressions for the correponding resolvents and derive spectral decompositions. These types of boundary conditions are interesting from the physical point of view, especially the second ones, which give an example of emergence of long-range action in excha…
We investigate the skew-adjoint extensions of a partial derivative operator acting in the direction of one of the sides a unit square. We investigate the unitary equivalence of such extensions and the spectra of such extensions. It follows from our results, that such extensions need not have discete spectrum. We apply our techniques to the problem of finding commuting skew-adjoint extensions of the partial derivative operators acting in the directions of the sides of the unit square. While our results are most easily stated for the unit square, they are established for a larger class of domain…
In this paper we study properties of functions of triples of not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators. The main result of the paper shows that unlike in the case of functions of pairs of self-adjoint operators there is no Lipschitz type estimates in any Schatten--von Neumann norm $\boldsymbol S_p$, $1\le p\le\infty$, for arbitrary functions in the Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^3)$. In other words, we prove that for $p\in[1,\infty]$, there is no constant $K>0$ such that the inequality \begin{align*} \|f(A_1,B_1,C_1)&-f(A_2,B_2,C_2)\|_{\boldsymbol S_p}\\[.1cm] &\le K\|f\|_{B_{\inf…
One may trace the idea that spectral flow should be given as the integral of a one form back to the 1974 Vancouver ICM address of I.M. Singer. Our main theorem gives analytic formulae for the spectral flow along a norm differentiable path of self-adjoint bounded Breuer-Fredholm operators in a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. These formulae have a geometric interpretation which derives from the proof. Namely we define a family of Banach submanifolds of all bounded self-adjoint Breuer-Fredholm operators and on each submanifold define global one forms whose integral on a norm differentiable path …
