A scheme of computing $χ(\mbar_{1,n}, L_1^{\otimes d_1}\otimes ... \otimes L_n^{\otimes d_n})$ is given. Here $\mbar_{1,n}$ is the moduli space of $n$-pointed stable curves of genus one and $L_i$ are the universal cotangent line bundles defined by $x_i^*(ω_{C/M})$, where $C \to \mbar_{1,n}$ is the universal curve, $ω_{C/M}$ the relative dualizing sheaf and $x_i$ the marked point. This work is a sequel to \cite{YL1}.
In this article we consider log canonical pairs which are log-smooth. If the corresponding canonical bundle is pseudo-effective, then we show that any quotient of the orbifold cotangent bundle of the pair has a pseudo-effective determinant. One of the new ingredients in the proof is a generalization of the Bogomolov-McQuillan algebraicity criterion in the context of holomorphic foliations whose minimal slope with respect to a movable class is positive.
In this paper we prove that for an almost complex orbifold, its virtual orbifold cohomology [math.AT/0606573] is isomorphic as algebras to the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology of its cotangent orbifold.
In this work, we investigate the positivity of logarithmic and orbifold cotangent bundles along hyperplane arrangements in projective spaces. We show that a very interesting example given by Noguchi (as early as in 1986) can be pushed further to a very great extent. Key ingredients of our approach are the use of Fermat covers and the production of explicit global symmetric differentials. This allows us to obtain some new results in the vein of several classical results of the literature on hyperplane arrangements. These seem very natural using the modern point of view of augmented base loci, a…
We give an effective algorithm to compute the Euler characteristics $χ(\mbar_{1,n}, \otimes_{i=1}^n L_i^{d_i})$. In addition, we give a simple proof of Pandharipande's vanishing theorem $H^j (\mbar_{0,n}, \otimes_{i=1}^n L_i^{d_i})=0$ for $j \ge 1, d_i \ge0$.
In this article we establish a version of Y. Miyaoka generic semi-positivity theorem in the context of log-canonical orbifold pairs. As an application, we show that the canonical bundle associated to a lc pair is big as soon as there exists a generically injective morphism from an ample line bundle to some symmetric power of the cotangent bundle associated to the orbifold pair.
The notion of the orbifold Euler characteristic came from physics at the end of 80's. There were defined higher order versions of the orbifold Euler characteristic and generalized ("motivic") versions of them. In a previous paper the authors defined a notion of the Grothendieck ring $K_0^{\rm fGr}(Var)$ of varieties with actions of finite groups on which the orbifold Euler characteristic and its higher order versions are homomorphisms to the ring of integers. Here we define the generalized orbifold Euler characteristic and higher order versions of it as ring homomorphisms from $K_0^{\rm fGr}(V…
We introduce orbifold Euler numbers for normal surfaces with Q-divisors. These numbers behave multiplicatively under finite maps and in the log canonical case we prove that they satisfy the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau type inequality. As a corollary we prove effective versions of Bogomolov's result on boundedness of rational curves in some surfaces of general type. Finally, we give some applications to singularities of plane curves.
We solve the problem of the computation of the orbifold Euler characteristics of $\Mbar_{g,n}$. We take the works of Harer-Zagier \cite{hz} and Bini-Harer \cite{bh} as our starting point, and apply the formalisms developed in \cite{wz} and \cite{zhou1} to this problem. These formalisms are typical examples of mathematical methods inspired by quantum field theories. We also present many closed formulas and some numerical data. In genus zero the results are related to Ramanujan polynomials, and in higher genera we get recursion relations almost identical to the recursion relations for Ramanujan …
In the framework of constructing mirror symmetric pairs of Calabi-Yau manifolds, P. Berglund, T. Hübsch and M. Henningson considered a pair $(f,G)$ consisting of an invertible polynomial $f$ and a finite abelian group $G$ of its diagonal symmetries and associated to this pair a dual pair $(\widetilde{f}, \widetilde{G})$. A. Takahashi suggested a generalization of this construction to pairs $(f, G)$ where $G$ is a non-abelian group generated by some diagonal symmetries and some permutations of variables. In a previous paper, the authors showed that some mirror symmetry phenomena appear only und…
Let $X$ and $Y$ be two analytic canonical Gorenstein orbifolds. A resolution of singularities $Y\to X$ is called an Euler resolution if $Y$ and $X$ have the same orbifold Euler number. If $Y$ is only terminal rather than smooth, it is called an Euler terminalisation. It is proved that Euler terminalisations exist for toric varieties in any dimension, for 4-dimensional toroidal varieties, and for singularities $\C^4/G$ where $G$ belongs to certain classes of $\SL(4)$ subgroups. The method of proof is expected to be applicable to a sizeable number of finite $\SL(4)$ subgroups and to lead to a ge…
To construct mirror symmetric Landau-Ginzburg models, P.Berglund, T.Hübsch and M.Henningson considered a pair $(f,G)$ consisting of an invertible polynomial $f$ and an abelian group $G$ of its symmetries together with a dual pair $(\widetilde{f}, \widetilde{G})$. Here we study the reduced orbifold Euler characteristics of the Milnor fibres of $f$ and $\widetilde f$ with the actions of the groups $G$ and $\widetilde G$ respectively and show that they coincide up to a sign.
On a smooth manifold M, the Kashiwara index formula expresses the weighted Euler characteristic of a constructible function in terms of its characteristic cycle. We generalize this formula to the case when M is a smooth orbifold, answering a question of Behrend.
We define the characteristic cycle of a constructible sheaf on a smooth surface in the cotangent bundle. We prove that the intersection number with the 0-section equals the Euler number and that the total dimension of vanishing cycles at an isolated characteristic point is also computed as an intersection number.
For the moduli spaces of Abelian differentials, the Euler characteristic is one of the most basic intrinsic topological invariants. We give a formula for the Euler characteristic that relies on intersection theory on the smooth compactification by multi-scale differentials. It is a consequence of a formula for the full Chern polynomial of the cotangent bundle of the compactification. The main new technical tools are an Euler sequence for the cotangent bundle of the moduli space of Abelian differentials and computational tools in the Chow ring, such as normal bundles to boundary divisors.
There are (at least) two different approaches to define equivariant analogue of the Euler charateristic for a space with a finite group action. The first one defines it as an element of the Burnside ring of the group. The second approach emerged from physics and includes the orbifold Euler characteristic and its higher order versions. Here we suggest a way to merge the two approaches together defining (in a certain setting) higher order Euler characteristics with values in the Burnside ring of a group. We give Macdonald type equations for these invariants. We also offer generalized ("motivic")…
We propose singular variants of the Singer-Hopf conjecture, formulated in terms of the Euler-Mather characteristic, intersection homology Euler characteristic and, resp., virtual Euler characteristic of a closed irreducible subvariety of an aspherical complex projective manifold. We prove the conjecture under the assumption that the cotangent bundle of the ambient variety is numerically effective (nef), or, more generally, when the ambient manifold admits a finite morphism to a complex projective manifold with a nef cotangent bundle.
Proven by A. Parshin and S. Arakelov in the early 70's, Shafaverich hyperbolicity conjecture states that a family of curves of genus $g\ge2$ parametrized by a non hyperbolic curve (\emph{i.e.} isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1$, $\mathbb{C}$, $\mathbb{C}^*$ or an elliptic curve) has to be isotrivial : the moduli of smooth fibres are constant. In higher dimensions, Viehweg's works on moduli of canonically polarized manifolds led him to generalize this statement in the following way: if a family of canonically polarized manifolds (parametrized by a quasi-projective base) has maximal variation, the bas…
P. Berglund, T. Hübsch, and M. Henningson proposed a method to construct mirror symmetric Calabi-Yau manifolds. They considered a pair consisting of an invertible polynomial and of a finite (abelian) group of its diagonal symmetries together with a dual pair. A. Takahashi suggested a method to generalize this construction to symmetry groups generated by some diagonal symmetries and some permutations of variables. In a previous paper, we explained that this construction should work only under a special condition on the permutation group called parity condition (PC). Here we prove that, if the p…
We define the characteristic cycle of a locally constant étale sheaf on a smooth variety in positive characteristic ramified along boundary as a cycle in the cotangent bundle of the variety, at least on a neighborhood of the generic point of the divisor on the boundary. The crucial ingredient in the definition is an additive structure on the boundary induced by the groupoid structure of multiple self products. We prove a compatibility with pull-back and local acyclicity in non-characteristic situations. We also give a relation with the characteristic cohomology class under a certain condition …
There is a well developed intersection theory on smooth Artin stacks with quasi-affine diagonal. However, for Artin stacks whose diagonal is not quasi-finite the notion of the degree of a Chow cycle is not defined. In this paper we propose a definition for the degree of a cycle on Artin toric stacks whose underlying toric varieties are complete. As an application we define the Euler characteristic of an Artin toric stack with complete good moduli space - extending the definition of the orbifold Euler characteristic. An explicit combinatorial formula is given for 3-dimensional Artin toric stack…
Let ${mathcal M}_g^n$ be the moduli space of n-pointed Riemann surfaces of genus g. Denote by ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_g^n$ the Deligne-Mumford compactification of ${mathcal M}_g^n$. In the present paper, we calculate the orbifold and the ordinary Euler characteristic of ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_g^n$ for any g and n such that n>2-2g.
In this paper we prove a formula relating the equivariant Euler characteristic of $K$-theoretic stable envelopes to an object known as the index vertex for the cotangent bundle of the full flag variety. Our formula demonstrates that the index vertex is the power series expansion of a rational function. This result is a consequence of the 3d mirror self-symmetry of the variety considered here. In general, one expects an analogous result to hold for any two varieties related by 3d mirror symmetry.
We consider an orbifold Landau-Ginzburg model $(f,G)$, where $f$ is an invertible polynomial in three variables and $G$ a finite group of symmetries of $f$ containing the exponential grading operator, and its Berglund-Hübsch transpose $(f^T, G^T)$. We show that this defines a mirror symmetry between orbifold curves and cusp singularities with group action. We define Dolgachev numbers for the orbifold curves and Gabrielov numbers for the cusp singularities with group action. We show that these numbers are the same and that the stringy Euler number of the orbifold curve coincides with the $G^T$-…
Exploiting the description of rings of differential operators as Azumaya algebras on cotangent bundles, we show that the moduli stack of flat connections on a curve (allowed to acquire orbifold points) defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic is étale locally equivalent to a moduli stack of Higgs bundles over the Hitchin base. We then study the interplay with stability and generalize a result of Laszlo-Pauly, concerning properness of the Hitchin map. Using Arinkin's autoduality of compactified Jacobians we extend the main result of Bezrukavnikov-Braverman, the Lang…
We define a Grothendieck ring of varieties with finite groups actions and show that the orbifold Euler characteristic and the Euler characteristics of higher orders can be defined as homomorphisms from this ring to the ring of integers. We describe two natural $λ$-structures on the ring and the corresponding power structures over it and show that one of these power structures is effective. We define a Grothendieck ring of varieties with equivariant vector bundles and show that the generalized ("motivic") Euler characteristics of higher orders can be defined as homomorphisms from this ring to t…
We study the geometry and topology of Hilbert schemes of points on the orbifold surface [C^2/G], respectively the singular quotient surface C^2/G, where G is a finite subgroup of SL(2,C) of type A or D. We give a decomposition of the (equivariant) Hilbert scheme of the orbifold into affine space strata indexed by a certain combinatorial set, the set of Young walls. The generating series of Euler characteristics of Hilbert schemes of points of the singular surface of type A or D is computed in terms of an explicit formula involving a specialized character of the basic representation of the corr…
We present a largely self contained account on the K-theory of a weighted smooth projective curve over an algebraically closed field. In particular, we discuss the weighted version of divisor theory, Euler form, and Riemann-Roch theorem. This includes a treatment of the orbifold Euler characteristic.
We prove the Dubrovin's conjecture for the Stokes matrices for the quantum cohomology of orbifold projective lines. The conjecture states that the Stokes matrix of the first structure connection of the Frobenius manifold constructed from the Gromov-Witten theory coincides with the Euler matrix of a full exceptional collection of the bounded derived category of the coherent sheaves. Our proof is based on the homological mirror symmetry, primitive forms of affine cusp polynomials and the Picard-Lefschetz theory.
We analyze the structure of the virtual (orbifold) K-theory ring of the complex orbifold P(1,n) and its virtual Adams (or power) operations, by using the non-Abelian localization theorem of Edidin-Graham. In particular, we identify the group of virtual line elements and obtain a natural presentation for the virtual K-theory ring in terms of these virtual line elements. This yields a surjective homomorphism from the virtual K-theory ring of P(1,n) to the ordinary K-theory ring of a crepant resolution of the cotangent bundle of P(1,n) which respects the Adams operations. Furthermore, there is a …
Kawasaki's formula is a tool to compute holomorphic Euler characteristics of vector bundles on a compact orbifold X. Let X be an orbispace with perfect obstruction theory which admits an embedding in a smooth orbifold. One can then construct the virtual structure sheaf and the virtual fundamental class of X. In this paper we prove that Kawasaki's formula behaves well " with working virtually" on X in the following sense: if we replace the structure sheaves, tangent and normal bundles in the formula by their virtual counterparts then Kawasaki's formula stays true. Our motivation comes from stud…
Prym-Teichmüller curves $W_D(4)$ constitute the main examples of known primitive Teichmüller curves in the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_3$. We determine, for each non-square discriminant $D>1$, the number and type of orbifold points in $W_D(4)$. These results, together with the formulas of Lanneau-Nguyen and Möller for the number of cusps and the Euler characteristic, complete the topological characterisation of Prym-Teichmüller curves in genus 3. Crucial for the determination of the orbifold points is the analysis of families of genus 3 cyclic covers of degree $4$ and $6$, branched over four poi…
We consider the analogue of Hurwitz curves, smooth projective curves $C$ of genus $g \ge 2$ that realize equality in the Hurwitz bound $|\mathrm{Aut}(C)| \le 84 (g - 1)$, to smooth compact quotients $S$ of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^2$. When $S$ is arithmetic, we show that $|\mathrm{Aut}(S)| \le 288 e(S)$, where $e(S)$ is the (topological) Euler characteristic, and in the case of equality show that $S$ is a regular cover of a particular Deligne--Mostow orbifold. We conjecture that this inequality holds independent of arithmeticity, and note that work of Xiao makes progress on this conjecture…
We prove that the Eynard-Orantin symplectic invariants of the curve xy-y^2=1 are the orbifold Euler characteristics of the moduli spaces of genus g curves. We do this by associating to the Eynard-Orantin invariants of xy-y^2=1 a problem of enumerating covers of the two-sphere branched over three points. This viewpoint produces new recursion relations---string and dilaton equations---between the quasi-polynomials that enumerate such covers.
