A detailed version of preprint "Self-linking number of a real algebraic link" by the same author, alg-geom/9410030. For a nonsingular real algebraic curve in 3-dimensional projective space or 3-sphere, a new integer-valued characteristic is introduced. It is invariant under rigid isotopy and multiplied by -1 under mirror reflections. In a sense, it is a Vassiliev invariant of degree 1 and a counterpart of a link diagram writhe. For a regular complete intersection this invariant vanishes, while for rational knots of degree d it takes all the values between -(d-1)(d-2)/2 and (d-1)(d-2)/2.
This is a sequel to the paper \cite{MO-mw} which identified maximally writhed algebraic links in $\rp^3$ and classified them topologically. In this paper we prove that all maximally writhed links of the same topological type are rigidly isotopic, i.e. one can be deformed into another with a family of smooth real algebraic links of the same degree.
In this paper we study rational real algebraic knots in $\R P^3$. We show that two real algebraic knots of degree $\leq5$ are rigidly isotopic if and only if their degrees and encomplexed writhes are equal. We also show that any irreducible smooth knot which admits a plane projection with less than or equal to four crossings has a rational parametrization of degree $\leq 6$. Furthermore an explicit construction of rational knots of a given degree with arbitrary encomplexed writhe (subject to natural restrictions) is presented.
For a nonsingular real algebraic curve in the 3-dimensional projective space and sphere a new numeric characteristic is introduced. It takes integer values, is invariant under rigid isotopy, multiplied by -1 under mirror reflection. In a sense it is a Vassiliev invariant of degree 1 and a counter-part of a link diagram writhe.
The paper gives topological as well as rigid isotopy classification of smooth irreducible algebraic curves in the real projective 3-space for the case when the degree of the curve is at most six and its genus is at most one.
We compute the Heegaard-Floer link homology of algebraic links in terms of the multivariate Hilbert function of the corresponding plane curve singularities. The main result of the paper identifies four homologies: (a) the Heegaard-Floer link homology of the local embedded link of the germ, (b) the lattice homology associated with the Hilbert function, (c) the homologies of the projectivized complements of local hyperplane arrangements cut out from the local algebra, and (d) a certain variant of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of these local arrangements. In particular, the Poincaré polynomials of al…
A generalised Thurston-Bennequin invariant for a Q-singularity of a real algebraic variety is defined as a linking form on the homologies of the real link of the singularity. The main goal of this paper is to present a method to calculate the linking form in terms of the very good resolution graph of a real normal unibranch surface singularity. For such singularities, the value of the linking form is the Thurston-Bennequin number of the real link of the singularity. As a special case of unibranch surface singularities, the behaviour of the linking form is investigated on the Brieskorn double p…
Given an $n$-component link $L$ in any 3-manifold $M$, the space $\mathcal{L} \subset (\mathbb{Q}\cup \mkern-1.5mu\{\infty\})^n$ of rational surgery slopes yielding L-spaces is already fully characterized (in joint work by the author) when $n\!=\!1$ and $\mathcal{L}$ is nontrivial. For $n\mkern-2mu>\mkern-3mu1$, however, there are no previous results for $\mathcal{L}$ as a rational subspace, and only limited results for integer surgeries $\mathcal{L}\cap\mathbb{Z}^n$ on $S^3\mkern-2mu$. Herein, we provide the first nontrivial explicit descriptions of $\mathcal{L}$ for rational surgeries on mul…
It it known that the set of L-space surgeries on a nontrivial L-space knot is always bounded from below. However, already for two-component torus links the set of L-space surgeries might be unbounded from below. For algebraic two-component links we provide three complete characterizations for the boundedness from below: one in terms of the $h$-function, one in terms of the Alexander polynomial, and one in terms of the embedded resolution graph. They show that the set of L-space surgeries is bounded from below for most algebraic links. In fact, the used property of the $h$-function is a suffici…
We construct an invariant of parametrized generic real algebraic surfaces in RP^3 which generalizes the Brown invariant of immersed surfaces from smooth topology. The invariant is constructed using the self intersection, which is a real algebraic curve with points of three local characters: the intersection of two real sheets, the intersection of two complex conjugate sheets or a Whitney umbrella. The Brown invariant was expressed through a self linking number of the self intersection by Kirby and Melvin. We extend the definition of this self linking number to the case of parametrized generic …
We use Morse theoretical arguments to study algebraic curves in C^2. We take an algebraic curve C in C^2 and intersect it with a family of spheres with fixed origin and varying radii. We explain in detail how does the resulting link change when we cross a singular point of C. Applying link invariants as Murasugi's signature and Levine--Tristram signatures we obtain some informations about possible singularities of a curve C in terms of its topology.
The present paper studies the structure of characteristic varieties of fundamental groups of graph manifolds. As a consequence, a simple proof of Papadima's question is provided on the characterization of algebraic links that have quasi-projective fundamental groups. The type of quasi-projective obstructions used here are in the spirit of Papadima's original work.
The Euler characteristic of the link of a real algebraic variety is an interesting topological invariant in order to discuss local topological properties. We prove in the paper that an invariant stronger than the Euler Characteristic is well defined for the link of an algebraic variety: its virtual Poincaré polynomial.
We prove that a sufficiently large surgery on any algebraic link is an L-space. For torus links we give a complete classification of integer surgery coefficients providing L-spaces.
The linking set is an invariant of algebraic plane curves introduced by Meilhan and the first author. It has been successfully used to detect several examples of Zariski pairs, i.e. curves with the same combinatorics and different embedding in $\mathds{CP}^2$. Differentiating Shimada's $π_1$-equivalent Zariski pair by the linking set, we prove, in the present paper, that this invariant is not determined by the fundamental group of the curve.
Operators on the ring of algebraically constructible functions are used to compute local obstructions for a four-dimensional semialgebraic set to be homeomorphic to a real algebraic set. The link operator and arithmetic operators yield $2^{43}-43$ independent characteristic numbers mod 2, which generalize the Akbulut-King numbers in dimension three.
We define and calculate signature and nullity invariants for complex schemes for curves in the real projective plane. We use an analog of the Murasugi-Tristram inequality to prohibit certain schemes from being realized by real algebraic curves. We give new formulas for Casson-Gordon invariants of graph manifolds, and signatures of graph links.
The Alexander polynomial in several variables is defined for links in three-dimensional homology spheres, in particular, in the Poincaré sphere: the intersection of the surface $S=\{(z_1,z_2,z_3)\in {\mathbb C}^3: z_1^5+z_2^3+z_3^2=0\}$ with the 5-dimensional sphere ${\mathbb S}_{\varepsilon}^5=\{(z_1,z_2,z_3)\in {\mathbb C}^3: \vert z_1\vert^2+\vert z_2\vert^2+\vert z_3\vert^2=\varepsilon^2\}$. An algebraic link in the Poincaré sphere is the intersection of a germ $(C,0)\subset (S,0)$ of a complex analytic curve in $(S,0)$ with the sphere ${\mathbb S}_{\varepsilon}^3$ of radius $\varepsilon$ …
We give two proofs of a conjecture of the first author (Inv. Math. 98, 1989) that a reduced algebraic plane curve is regular at infinity if and only if its link at infinity is a regular toral link. This conjecture has also been proved by Ha H.~V. using Lojasiewicz numbers at infinity. Our first proof uses the polar invariant and the second proof uses linear systems of plane curve singularities. The second approach (based on a paper in preparation) also proves a stronger conjecture (loc. cit.) describing topologically the regular link at infinity associated with an irregular link at infinity.
Let $Y$ be a generic link of a subvariety $X$ of a nonsingular variety $A$. We give a description of the Grauert-Riemenschneider canonical sheaf of $Y$ in terms of the multiplier ideal sheaves associated to $X$ and use it to study the singularities of $Y$. As the first application, we give a criterion when $Y$ has rational singularities and show that log canonical threshold increases and log canonical pairs are preserved in generic linkage. As another application we give a quick and simple liaison method to generalize the results of de Fernex-Ein and Chardin-Ulrich on the Castelnuovo-Mumford r…
Given a planar curve singularity, we prove a conjecture of Oblomkov-Shende, relating the geometry of its Hilbert scheme of points to the HOMFLY polynomial of the associated algebraic link. More generally, we prove an extension of this conjecture, due to Diaconescu-Hua-Soibelman, relating stable pair invariants on the conifold to the colored HOMFLY polynomial of the algebraic link. Our proof uses wall-crossing techniques to prove a blowup identity on the algebro-geometric side. We prove a matching identity for the colored HOMFLY polynomials of a link using skein-theoretic techniques.
We study the Euler characteristic of the real Milnor fibres of a real analytic map, using a relation between complex monodromy and complex conjugation. We deduce the result of Coste and Kurdyka that the Euler characteristic of the link of an irreducible algebraic subset of a real algebraic set is generically constant modulo 4. We generalize this result to iterated links of ordered families of algebraic subsets.
Earlier it was described to which extent the Alexander polynomial in several variables of an algebraic link in the Poincaré sphere determines the topology of the link. It was shown that, except some explicitly described cases, the Alexander polynomial of an algebraic link determines the combinatorial type of the minimal resolution of the curve and therefore the topology of the corresponding link. The Alexander polynomial of an algebraic link in the Poincaré sphere coincides with the Poincaré series of the corresponding set of curve valuations. The latter one can be defined as an integral over …
We discuss the locus generation algorithm used by the dynamic geometry software Cinderella, and how it uses complex detours to resolve singularities. We show that the algorithm is independent of the orientation of its complex detours. We conjecture that the algorithm terminates if it takes small enough complex detours and small enough steps on every complex detour. Moreover, we introduce a variant of the algorithm that possibly generates entire real connected components of real algebraic loci. Several examples illustrate its use for organic generation of real algebraic loci. Another example sh…
An algebraic version of Kashiwara and Schapira's calculus of constructible functions is used to describe local topological properties of real algebraic sets, including Akbulut and King's numerical conditions for a stratified set of dimension three to be algebraic. These properties, which include generalizations of the invariants modulo 4, 8, and 16 of Coste and Kurdyka, are defined using the link operator on the ring of constructible functions.
The Arnold inequalities characterizing the topology of non-singular plane real algebraic curves and the generalization of these inequalities for nodal curves by Viro are extended in this paper for the curves whose singularities have non-degenerated Milnor form. This involves an invariant of such real singularities, the real linking form, which is calculated.
We address the question of identifying non-smooth points in affine real algebraic varieties. A simple algebraic criterion will be formulated and proven. As an application we can answer several questions about the configuration spaces of some class of planar linkages.

The complete classification of hexapods - also known as Stewart Gough platforms - of mobility one is still open. To tackle this problem, we can associate to each hexapod of mobility one an algebraic curve, called the configuration curve. In this paper we establish an upper bound for the degree of this curve, assuming the hexapod is general enough. Moreover, we provide a construction of hexapods with curves of maximal degree, which is based on liaison, a technique used in the theory of algebraic curves.
