We define abelian extensions of algebras in congruence-modular varieties. The theory is sufficiently general that it includes, in a natural way, extensions of R-modules for a ring R. We also define a cohomology theory, which we call clone cohomology, such that the cohomology group in dimension one is the group of equivalence classes of extensions.
We study the class of finite lattices that are isomorphic to the congruence lattices of algebras from a given finitely generated congruence-distributive variety. If this class is as large as allowed by an obvious necessary condition, the variety is called congruence FD-maximal. The main results of this paper characterize some special congruence FD-maximal varieties.
This paper studies absolute retracts in congruence modular varieties of universal algebras. It is shown that every absolute retract with finite dimensional congruence lattice is a product of subdirectly irreducible algebras. Further, every absolute retract in a residually small variety is the product of an abelian algebra and a centerless algebra.
We provide a Maltsev characterization of congruence distributive varieties by showing that a variety $\mathcal {V}$ is congruence distributive if and only if the congruence identity $α\cap (β\circ γ\circ β) \subseteq αβ\circ γ\circ αβ\circ γ\dots $ ($k$ factors) holds in $\mathcal {V}$, for some natural number $k$.
Congruence modular and congruence distributive varieties can be characterized by the existence of sequences of Gumm and Jónsson terms, respectively. Such sequences have variable lengths, in general. It is immediate from the above paragraph that there is a variety with Gumm terms but without Jónsson terms. We prove the quite unexpected result that, on the other hand, if some variety has both kinds of terms, then the minimal lengths of the sequences differ at most by $1$. It follows that every $r$-modular congruence distributive variety is $r^2-r+2$-distributive.
An identity s=t is linear if each variable occurs at most once in each of the terms s and t. Let T be a tolerance relation of an algebra A in a variety defined by a set of linear identities. We prove that there exist an algebra B in the same variety and a congruence Theta of B such that a homomorphism from B onto A maps Theta onto T.
We show that the quasiequational theory of a relatively congruence modular quasivariety of left $R$-modules is determined by a two-sided ideal in $R$ together with a filter of left ideals. The two-sided ideal encodes the identities that hold in the quasivariety, while the filter of left ideals encodes the quasiidentities. The filter of left ideals defines a generalized notion of torsion. It follows from our result that if $R$ is left Artinian, then any relatively congruence modular quasivariety of left $R$-modules is axiomatizable by a set of identities together with at most one proper quasiid…
In this paper, we extend properties Going Up and Lying Over from ring theory to the general setting of congruence--modular equational classes, using the notion of prime congruence defined through the commutator. We show how these two properties relate to each other, prove that they are preserved by finite direct products and quotients and provide algebraic and topological characterizations for them. We also point out many kinds of varieties in which these properties always hold.
Congruence lattices of semiprime algebras from semi--degenerate congruence--modular varieties fulfill the equivalences from B. A. Davey`s well--known characterization theorem for $m$--Stone bounded distributive lattices, moreover, changing the cardinalities in those equivalent conditions does not change their validity. I prove this by transferring Davey`s Theorem from bounded distributive lattices to such congruence lattices through a certain lattice morphism and using the fact that the codomain of that morphism is a frame. Furthermore, these equivalent conditions are preserved by finite direc…
We study algebras and varieties where every non-trivial congruence has some class being a non-trivial subuniverse of the algebra in question. Then we focus on algebras where this non-trivial class is a unique non-singleton class of the congruence. In particular, we investigate Rees algebras, quasi-Rees algebras and algebras having the one-block-property. We also present results concerning these properties on quotient algebras. Several examples of such algebras and varieties are included.
We define a relation that describes the ternary commutator for congruence modular varieties. Properties of this relation are used to investigate the theory of the higher commutator for congruence modular varieties.
We provide a partial result on Taylor's modularity conjecture, and several related problems. Namely, we show that the interpretability join of two idempotent varieties that are not congruence modular is not congruence modular either, and we prove an analogue for idempotent varieties with a cube term. Also, similar results are proved for linear varieties and the properties of congruence modularity, having a cube term, congruence $n$-permutability for a fixed $n$, and satisfying a non-trivial congruence identity.
We denote by Conc(A) the semilattice of all finitely generated congruences of an (universal) algebra A, and we define Conc(V) as the class of all isomorphic copies of all Conc(A), for A in V, for any variety V of algebras. Let V and W be locally finite varieties of algebras such that for each finite algebra A in V there are, up to isomorphism, only finitely many B in W such that A and B have isomorphic congruence lattices, and every such B is finite. If Conc(V) is not contained in Conc(W), then there exists a semilattice of cardinality aleph 2 in Conc(V)-Conc(W). Our result extends to quasivar…
We study how the systole of principal congruence coverings of a Hilbert modular variety grows when the degree of the covering goes to infinity. We prove that given a Hilbert modular variety $M$ of real dimension $2n$, the sequence of principal congruence coverings $M_{I}$ eventually satisfies $$sysπ_{1}(M_{I})\geq \frac{4}{3\sqrt{n}}\log(vol(M_{I}))-c,$$ where $c$ is a constant independent of $M_{I}$.
The {\em reticulation} of an algebra $A$ is a bounded distributive lattice whose prime spectrum of ideals (or filters), endowed with the Stone topology, is homeomorphic to the prime spectrum of congruences of $A$, with its own Stone topology. The reticulation allows algebraic and topological properties to be transferred between the algebra $A$ and bounded distributive lattices, a transfer which is facilitated if we can define a {\em reticulation functor} from a variety containing $A$ to the variety of (bounded) distributive lattices. In this paper, we continue the study of the reticulation of …
In this paper we present two intrinsic algebraic definitions of tropical variety motivated by the classical Zariski correspondence, one utilizing the algebraic structure of the coordinate semiring of an affine supertropical algebraic set, and the second based on the layered structure. We tie them to tropical geometry, especially in connection with the dimension of an affine variety.
We characterize those nilpotent algebras of prime power order and finite type in congruence modular varieties that have infinitely many polynomially inequivalent congruence preserving expansions.
An early result in the theory of Natural Dualities is that an algebra with a near unanimity (NU) term is dualizable. A converse to this is also true: if V(A) is congruence distributive and A is dualizable, then A has an NU term. An important generalization of the NU term for congruence distributive varieties is the cube term for congruence modular (CM) varieties, and it has been thought that a similar characterization of dualizability for algebras in a CM variety would also hold. We prove that if A omits tame congruence types 1 and 5 (all locally finite CM varieties omit these types) and is du…
The Lifting Idempotent Property ($LIP$) of ideals in commutative rings inspired the study of Boolean lifting properties in the context of other concrete algebraic structures ($MV$-algebras, commutative l-groups, $BL$-algebras, bounded distributive lattices, residuated lattices, etc.), as well as for some types of universal algebras (C. Muresan and the author defined and studied the Congruence Boolean Lifting Property ($CBLP$) for congruence modular algebras). A lifting ideal of a ring $R$ is an ideal of $R$ fulfilling $LIP$. In a recent paper, Tarizadeh and Sharma obtained new results on liftin…
