Let m be a positive integer, and let A be the set of all positive integers that belong to a union of r distinct congruence classes modulo m. We assume that the elements of A are relatively prime, that is, gcd(A) = 1. Let p_A(n) denote the number of partitions of n into parts belonging to A. We obtain the asymptotic formula log p_A(n) ~ π\sqrt(2rn/3m). The proof is based on Erdos's elementary method to obtain the asymptotic formula for the usual partition function p(n).
For fixed $m$ and $R\subseteq \{0,1,\ldots,m-1\}$, take $A$ to be the set of positive integers congruent modulo $m$ to one of the elements of $R$, and let $p_A(n)$ be the number of ways to write $n$ as a sum of elements of $A$. Nathanson proved that $\log p_A(n) \leq (1+o(1)) π\sqrt{2n|R|/3m}$ using a variant of a remarkably simple method devised by Erdős in order to bound the partition function. In this short note we describe a simpler and shorter proof of Nathanson's bound.
We show that the Lambert series $f(x)=\sum d(n) x^n$ is irrational at $x=1/b$ for negative integers $b < -1$ using an elementary proof that finishes an incomplete proof of Erdos.
We prove various inequalities between the number of partitions with the bound on the largest part and some restrictions on occurrences of parts. We explore many interesting consequences of these partition inequalities. In particular, we show that for $L\geq 1$, the number of partitions with $l-s \leq L$ and $s=1$ is greater than the number of partitions with $l-s\leq L$ and $s>1$. Here $l$ and $s$ are the largest part and the smallest part of the partition, respectively.
Let $α>1$ be an irrational number. We establish asymptotic formulas for the number of partitions of $n$ into summands and distinct summands, chosen from the Beatty sequence $(\lfloorαm\rfloor)_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$. This improves some results of Erdös and Richmond established in 1977.
Let $a$ and $b$ be positive integers. In 1946, Erdős and Niven proved that there are only finitely many positive integers $n$ for which one or more of the elementary symmetric functions of $1/b, 1/(a+b),..., 1/(an-a+b)$ are integers. In this paper, we show that for any integer $k$ with $1\le k\le n$, the $k$-th elementary symmetric function of $1/b, 1/(a+b),..., 1/(an-a+b)$ is not an integer except that either $b=n=k=1$ and $a\ge 1$, or $a=b=1, n=3$ and $k=2$. This refines the Erdős-Niven theorem and answers an open problem raised by Chen and Tang in 2012.
Recently, using modular forms and Smoot's {\tt Mathematica} implementation of Radu's algorithm for proving partition congruences, Merca proved the following two congruences: For all $n\geq 0,$ \begin{align*} A(9n+5) & \equiv 0 \pmod{3}, \\ A(27n+26) & \equiv 0 \pmod{3}. \end{align*} Here $A(n)$ is closely related to the function which counts the number of {\it cubic partitions}, partitions wherein the even parts are allowed to appear in two different colors. Indeed, $A(n)$ is defined as the difference between the number of cubic partitions of $n$ into an even numbers of parts and the number of…
Using elementary methods, we determine the highest power of 2 dividing a power sum 1^n + 2^n + . . . + m^n, generalizing Lengyel's formula for the case where m is itself a power of 2. An application is a simple proof of Moree's result that, if (a,m,n) is any solution of the generalized Erdos-Moser Diophantine equation 1^n + 2^n + . . . + (m-1)^n = am^n, then m is odd.
For a set of positive integers $A$, let $p_A(n)$ denote the number of ways to write $n$ as a sum of integers from $A$, and let $p(n)$ denote the usual partition function. In the early 40s, Erdős extended the classical Hardy--Ramanujan formula for $p(n)$ by showing that $A$ has density $α$ if and only if $\log p_A(n) \sim \log p(αn)$. Nathanson asked if Erdős's theorem holds also with respect to $A$'s lower density, namely, whether $A$ has lower-density $α$ if and only if $\log p_A(n) / \log p(αn)$ has lower limit $1$. We answer this question negatively by constructing, for every $α> 0$, a set …
Erdos and Niven proved that for any positive integers $m$ and $d$, there are only finitely many positive integers $n$ for which one or more of the elementary symmetric functions of $1/m,1/(m+d), ..., 1/(m+nd)$ are integers. Recently, Chen and Tang proved that if $n\ge 4$, then none of the elementary symmetric functions of $1,1/2, ..., 1/n$ is an integer. In this paper, we show that if $n\ge 2$, then none of the elementary symmetric functions of $1, 1/3, ..., 1/(2n-1)$ is an integer.
In this note we will give various exact formulas for functions on integer partitions including the functions $p(n)$ and $p(n,k)$ of the number of partitions of $n$ and the number of such partitions into exactly $k$ parts respectively. For instance, we shall prove that $$ p(n) = \sum_{d|n} \sum_{k=1}^{d} \sum_{i_0 =1}^{\lfloor d/k \rfloor} \sum_{i_1 =i_0}^{\lfloor\frac{d- i_0}{k-1} \rfloor} \sum_{i_2 =i_1}^{\lfloor\frac{d- i_0 - i_1}{k-2} \rfloor} ... \sum_{i_{k-3}=i_{k-4}}^{\lfloor\frac{n- i_0 - i_1-i_2- ...-i_{k-4}}{3} \rfloor} \sum_{c|(d,i_0,i_1,i_2,...,i_{k-3})} μ(c) (\lfloor \frac{d-i_0-i_…
We give short elementary expositions of combinatorial proofs of some variants of Euler's partitition problem that were first addressed analytically by George Andrews, and later combinatorially by others. Our methods, based on ideas from a previous paper by the author , enable us to state and prove new generalizations of two of these results.
Let $s(n)$ be the number of 1-shell totally symmetric plane partitions (TSPPs) of $n$. In this paper, an infinite family of congruences modulo powers of $5$ for $s(n)$ will be deduced through an elementary approach. Namely, $$s\left(2\cdot 5^{2α-1}n+5^{2α-1}\right)\equiv 0 \pmod{5^α}.$$
Let $p_2(n)$ denote the number of cubic partitions. In this paper, we shall present two new congruences modulo $11$ for $p_2(n)$. We also provide an elementary alternative proof of a congruence established by Chan. Furthermore, we will establish a recursion for $p_2(n)$, which is a special case of a broader class of recursions.
We remove 52 from the set of prime partitionable numbers in a paper by Holsztynski and Strube (1978), which also appears in a paper by Erdos and Trotter in the same year. We establish equivalence between two different definitions in the two papers, and further equivalence to the set of Erdos-Woods numbers.
Erdös and Niven proved in 1946 that for any positive integers $m$ and $d$, there are at most finitely many integers $n$ for which at least one of the elementary symmetric functions of $1/m, 1/(m+d), ..., 1/(m+(n-1)d)$ are integers. Recently, Wang and Hong refined this result by showing that if $n\geq 4$, then none of the elementary symmetric functions of $1/m, 1/(m+d), ..., 1/(m+(n-1)d)$ is an integer for any positive integers $m$ and $d$. Let $f$ be a polynomial of degree at least $2$ and of nonnegative integer coefficients. In this paper, we show that none of the elementary symmetric functio…
For n>1, let G(n)=σ(n)/(n log log n), where σ(n) is the sum of the divisors of n. We prove that the Riemann Hypothesis is true if and only if 4 is the only composite number N satisfying G(N) \ge \max(G(N/p),G(aN)), for all prime factors p of N and all multiples aN of N. The proof uses Robin's and Gronwall's theorems on G(n). An alternate proof of one step depends on two properties of superabundant numbers proved using Alaoglu and Erdős's results.
For each prime $p\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ consider the Legendre character $χ=(\frac{\cdot}{p})$. Let $p_\pm(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ into parts $λ>0$ such that $χ(λ)=\pm 1$. Petersson proved a beautiful limit formula for the ratio of $p_+(n)$ to $p_-(n)$ as $n\to\infty$ expressed in terms of important invariants of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$. But his proof is not illuminating and Grosswald conjectured a more natural proof using a Tauberian converse of the Stolz-Cesàro theorem. In this paper we suggest an approach to address Grosswald's conjecture. We discuss a monot…
