Of the various formalisms developed to treat relativistic phenomena, those based on Clifford's geometric algebra are especially well adapted for clear geometric interpretations and computational efficiency. Here we study relationships between formulations of special relativity in the spacetime algebra (STA) Cl{1,3} of Minkowski space, and in the algebra of physical space (APS)Cl{3}. STA lends itself to an absolute formulation of relativity, in which paths, fields, and other physical properties have observer-independent representations. Descriptions in APS are related by a one-to-one mapping of elements from APS to the even subalgebra STA+ of STA. With this mapping, reversion in APS corresponds to hermitian conjugation in STA. The elements of STA+ are all that is needed to calculate physically measurable quantities because only they entail the observer dependence inherent in any physical measurement. As a consequence, every relativistic physical process that can be modeled in STA also has a representation in APS, and vice versa. In the presence of two or more inertial observers, two versions of APS present themselves. In the absolute version, both the mapping to STA+ and hermitian conjugation are observer dependent, and the proper basis vectors are persistent vectors that sweep out timelike planes. In the relative version, the mapping and hermitian conjugation are then the same for all observers. Relative APS gives a covariant representation of relativistic physics with spacetime multivectors represented by multiparavectors. We relate the two versions of APS as consistent models within the same algebra.
This paper is the third of a series of three, and it is the continuation of math-ph/0412074 and math-ph/0412075. After reviewing the conformal spacetime structure, conformal maps are described in Minkowski spacetime as the twisted adjoint representation of the group Spin_+(2,4), acting on paravectors. Twistors are then presented via the paravector model of Clifford algebras and related to conformal maps in the Clifford algebra over the lorentzian R{4,1}$ spacetime. We construct twistors in Minkowski spacetime as algebraic spinors associated with the Dirac-Clifford algebra Cl(1,3)(C) using one …
Some properties of the Clifford algebras Cl(3,0), Cl(1,3), Cl(1,3)(C), Cl(4,1) and Cl(2,4) are presented, and three isomorphisms between the Dirac-Clifford algebra C x Cl(1,3) and Cl(4,1) are exhibited, in order to construct conformal maps and twistors, using the paravector model of spacetime. The isomorphism between the twistor space inner product isometry group SU(2,2) and the group Spin+(2,4) is also investigated, in the light of a suitable isomorphism between C x Cl(1,3) and Cl(4,1). After reviewing the conformal spacetime structure, conformal maps are described in Minkowski spacetime as t…
We explore the consequences of space and time described within the Clifford multivector of three dimensions $ Cl_{3,0}$, where space consists of three-vectors and time is described with the three bivectors of this space. When describing the curvature around massive bodies, we show that this model of spacetime when including the Hubble expansion naturally produces the correct galaxy rotation curves without the need for dark matter.
In this summary of Habilitation Thesis, it is outlined author's 18 years research activity on mathematical physics, geometric methods in particle physics and gravity, modifications and applications (after defending his PhD thesis in 1994). Ten most relevant publications are structured conventionally into three "strategic directions": 1) nonholonomic geometric flows evolutions and exact solutions for Ricci solitons and field equations in (modified) gravity theories; 2) geometric methods in quantization of models with nonlinear dynamics and anisotropic field interactions; 3) (non) commutative ge…
The idea that spacetime has to be replaced by Clifford space (C-space) is explored. Quantum field theory (QFT) and string theory are generalized to C-space. It is shown how one can solve the cosmological constant problem and formulate string theory without central terms in the Virasoro algebra by exploiting the peculiar pseudo-Euclidean signature of C-space and the Jackiw definition of the vacuum state. As an introduction into the subject, a toy model of the harmonic oscillator in pseudo-Euclidean space is studied.
A theory in which 4-dimensional spacetime is generalized to a larger space, namely a 16-dimensional Clifford space (C-space) is investigated. Curved Clifford space can provide a realization of Kaluza-Klein theory. A covariant Dirac equation in curved C-space is explored. The generalized Dirac field is assumed to be a polyvector-valued object (a Clifford number) which can be written as a superposition of four independent spinors, each spanning a different left ideal of Clifford algebra. The general transformations of a polyvector can act from the left and/or from the right, and form a large gau…
We review Bacry and Levy-Leblond's work on possible kinematics as applied to 2-dimensional spacetimes, as well as the nine types of 2-dimensional Cayley-Klein geometries, illustrating how the Cayley-Klein geometries give homogeneous spacetimes for all but one of the kinematical groups. We then construct a two-parameter family of Clifford algebras that give a unified framework for representing both the Lie algebras as well as the kinematical groups, showing that these groups are true rotation groups. In addition we give conformal models for these spacetimes.
Z2-gradings of Clifford algebras are reviewed and we shall be concerned with an alpha-grading based on the structure of inner automorphisms, which is closely related to the spacetime splitting, if we consider the standard conjugation map automorphism by an arbitrary, but fixed, splitting vector. After briefly sketching the orthogonal and parallel components of products of differential forms, where we introduce the parallel [orthogonal] part as the space [time] component, we provide a detailed exposition of the Dirac operator splitting and we show how the differential operator parallel and orth…
In this paper we examine a new class of five dimensional (5D) exact solutions in extra dimension gravity possessing Lie algebroid symmetry. The constructions provide a motivation for the theory of Clifford nonholonomic algebroids elaborated in Ref. hep-th/0501217. Such Einstein-Dirac spacetimes are parametrized by generic off--diagonal metrics and nonholonomic frames (vielbeins) with associated nonlinear connection structure. They describe self-consistent propagations of (3D) Dirac wave packets in 5D nonholonomically deformed Taub NUT spacetimes and have two physically distinct properties: Fis…
The Minkowski spacetime quantum Clifford algebra structure associated with the conformal group and the Clifford-Hopf alternative k-deformed quantum Poincare algebra is investigated in the Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro mod 8 theorem context. The resulting algebra is equivalent to the deformed anti-de Sitter algebra U_q(so(3,2)), when the associated Clifford-Hopf algebra is taken into account, together with the associated quantum Clifford algebra and a (not braided) deformation of the periodicity Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro theorem.
Given the real Clifford algebra of a quadratic space with a given signature, we define a new product in this structure such that it simulates the Clifford product of a quadratic space with another signature different from the original one. Among the possible applications of this new product, we use it in order to write the minkowskian Dirac equation over the euclidean spacetime and to define a new duality operation in terms of which one can find self-dual and anti-self-dual solutions of gauge fields over Minkowski spacetime analogous to the ones over Euclidean spacetime and without needing to …
We investigate using Clifford algebra methods the theory of algebraic dotted and undotted spinor fields over a Lorentzian spacetime and their realizations as matrix spinor fields, which are the usual dotted and undotted two component spinor fields. We found that some ad hoc rules postulated for the covariant derivatives of Pauli sigma matrices and also for the Dirac gamma matrices in General Relativity cover important physical meaning, which is not apparent in the usual matrix presentation of the theory of two components dotted and undotted spinor fields. We also discuss some issues related to…
Following Herranz and Santander [Herranz F.J., Santander M., Mem. Real Acad. Cienc. Exact. Fis. Natur. Madrid 32 (1998), 59-84, physics/9702030] we will construct homogeneous spaces based on possible kinematical algebras and groups [Bacry H., Levy-Leblond J.-M., J. Math. Phys. 9 (1967), 1605-1614] and their contractions for 2-dimensional spacetimes. Our construction is different in that it is based on a generalized Clifford fibration: Following Penrose [Penrose R., Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., New York, 2005] we will call our fibration a Clifford fibration and not a Hopf fibration, as our fibration …
Here I present a full list with all possibles products between the generators of the Clifford algebra in a four-dimensional spacetime. The resulting expressions turned out to be very simple and easy to deal with.
This lecture note surveys the gamma matrices in general dimensions with arbitrary signatures, the study of which is essential to understand the supersymmetry in the corresponding spacetime. The contents supplement the lecture presented by the author at Modave Summer School in Mathematical Physics, Belgium, June, 2005.
Classification of quantum spinor fields according to quantum bilinear covariants is introduced in a context of quantum Clifford algebras on Minkowski spacetime. Once the bilinear covariants are expressed in terms of algebraic spinor fields, the duality between spinor and quantum spinor fields is thus discussed. Hence, by endowing the underlying spacetime with an arbitrary bilinear form with a antisymmetric part in addition to a symmetric spacetime metric, quantum algebraic spinor fields and deformed bilinear covariants can be constructed. They are therefore compared to the classical (non quant…
In this short pedagogical presentation, we introduce the spin groups and the spinors from the point of view of group theory. We also present, independently, the construction of the low dimensional Clifford algebras. And we establish the link between the two approaches. Finally, we give some notions of the generalisations to arbitrary spacetimes, by the introduction of the spin and spinor bundles.
New general results of non-existence and rigidity of spacelike submanifolds immersed in a spacetime, whose mean curvature is a time-oriented causal vector field, are given. These results hold for a wide class of spacetimes which includes globally hyperbolic, stationary, conformally stationary and pp-wave spacetimes, among others. Moreover, applications to the Cauchy problem in General Relativity, are presented. Finally, in the case of hypersurfaces, we also obtain significant consequences in Geometrical Analysis, solving new Calabi-Bernstein and Dirichlet problems on a Riemannian manifold.
General Relativity in the noncommutative spacetime of ${\cal M}^4 \times Z_2 \times Z_2$ is constructed based on a new type of fermions in addition to the known chiral quark-leptons. While this theory has a finite physical spectrum, all the known interactions of Nature and Higgs fields can be derived from it as components of gravity with only four free parameters.
We consider a straightforward extension of the 4-dimensional spacetime $M_4$ to the space of extended events associated with strings/branes, corresponding to points, lines, areas, 3-volumes, and 4-volumes in $M_4$. All those objects can be elegantly represented by the Clifford numbers $X\equiv x^A γ_A \equiv x^{a_1 ...a_r} γ_{a_1 ...a_r}, r=0,1,2,3,4$. This leads to the concept of the so-called Clifford space ${\cal C}$, a 16-dimensional manifold whose tangent space at every point is the Clifford algebra ${\cal C \ell }(1,3)$. The latter space besides an algebra is also a vector space whose el…
We first consider the Klein-Gordon equation in the 6-dimensional space $M_{2,4}$ with signature $+ - - - - +$ and show how it reduces to the Stueckelberg equation in the 4-dimensional spacetime $M_{1,3}$. A field that satisfies the Stueckelberg equation depends not only on the four spacetime coordinates $x^μ$, but also on an extra parameter $τ$, the so called evolution time. In our setup, $τ$ comes from the extra two dimensions. We point out that the space $M_{2,4}$ can be identified with a subspace of the 16-dimensional Clifford space, a manifold whose tangent space at any point is the Cliffo…
In the present work, metrics which lead to projected closed orbits are found by comparing the relativistic differential equation of orbits with the corresponding classical differential equation. Physical and geometrical properties of these peculiar spacetimes are derived and discussed. It is also shown that some of these spacetimes belong to the broader class of the Bertrand spacetimes.
Because of the isomorphism ${C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{1,3}(\Bbb{C})\cong{C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{2,3}(\Bbb{R})$, it is possible to complexify the spacetime Clifford algebra ${C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{1,3}(\Bbb{R})$ by adding one additional timelike dimension to the Minkowski spacetime. In a recent work we showed how this treatment provide a particular interpretation of Dirac particles and antiparticles in terms of the new temporal dimension. In this article we thoroughly study the structure of the real Clifford algebra ${C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{2,3}(\Bbb{R})$ paying special attention to the isomorphism …
Universal velocity addition formulas analogous to the well-known formula in special relativity are found for four geometrically defined relative velocities in a large class of Robertson-Walker spacetimes. Explicit examples are given. The special relativity result is recovered as a special case, and it is shown that the spectroscopic relative velocity, in contrast to three other geometric relative velocities, follows the same addition law as in special relativity for comoving observers in Robertson-Walker cosmologies.
It is shown that the ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SQM) can be extended to a $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded superalgebra. This is done by presenting quantum mechanical models which realize, with the aid of Clifford gamma matrices, the $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded Poincaré algebra in one-dimensional spacetime. Reflecting the fact that the $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded Poincaré algebra has a number of central elements, a sequence of models defining the $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded version of SQM are provided for a given value of $n.$ In a model of the sequence, the central elements having the same $\m…
The stabilized Poincare-Heisenberg algebra (SPHA) is the Lie algebra of quantum relativistic kinematics generated by fifteen generators. It is obtained from imposing stability conditions after attempting to combine the Lie algebras of quantum mechanics and relativity which by themselves are stable, however not when combined. In this paper we show how the sixteen dimensional Clifford algebra CL(1,3) can be used to generate the SPHA. The Clifford algebra path to the SPHA avoids the traditional stability considerations, relying instead on the fact that CL(1,3) is a semi-simple algebra and therefo…
In this paper the application of the $M$-projective curvature tensor in the general theory of relativity has been studied. Firstly, we have proved that an $M$-projectively flat quasi-Einstein spacetime is of a special class with respect to an associated symmetric tensor field, followed by the theorem that a spacetime with vanishing $M$-projective curvature tensor is a spacetime of quasi-constant curvature. Then we have proved that an $M$-projectively flat quasi-Einstein spacetime is infinitesimally spatially isotropic relative to the unit timelike vector field $ξ$. In the next section we have …
We show that representations of the group of spacetime diffeomorphism and the Dirac algebra both arise in a phase-space histories version of canonical general relativity. This is the general-relativistic analogue of the novel time structure introduced previously in history theory: namely, the existence in non-relativistic physics of two types of time translation; and the existence in relativistic field theory of two distinct Poincare groups.
The problem of time in canonical quantum gravity is related to the fact that the canonical description is based on the prior choice of a spacelike foliation, hence making a reference to a spacetime metric. However, the metric is expected to be a dynamical, fluctuating quantity in quantum gravity. We show how this problem can be solved in the histories formulation of general relativity. We implement the 3+1 decomposition using metric-dependent foliations which remain spacelike with respect to all possible Lorentzian metrics. This allows us to find an explicit relation of covariant and canonical…
One of the most important characteristics of light in flat spacetime is that it satisfies Huygens' principle: Initial data for the vacuum Maxwell equations evolves sharply along null (and not timelike) geodesics. In flat spacetime, there are no tails which linger behind expanding wavefronts. Tails generically do exist, however, if the background spacetime is curved. The only non-flat vacuum geometries where electromagnetic fields satisfy Huygens' principle are known to be those associated with gravitational plane waves. This paper investigates whether perturbations to the plane wave geometry i…
We show in detail how the histories description of general relativity carries representations of both the spacetime diffeomorphisms group and the Dirac algebra of constraints. We show that the introduction of metric-dependent equivariant foliations leads to the crucial result that the canonical constraints are invariant under the action of spacetime diffeomorphisms. Furthermore, there exists a representation of the group of generalised spacetime mappings that are functionals of the four-metric: this is a spacetime analogue of the group originally defined by Bergmann and Komar in the context of…
It is shown that since the geometric spinors are elements of Clifford algebras, they must have the same transformation properties as any other Clifford number. In general, a Clifford number $Φ$ transforms into a new Clifford number $Φ'$ according to $Φ\to Φ' = {\rm{R}}\,Φ\,{\rm{S}}$, i.e., by the multiplication from the left and from the right by two Clifford numbers ${\rm R}$ and ${\rm S}$. We study the case of $Cl(1,3)$, which is the Clifford algebra of the Minkowski spacetime. Depending on choice of ${\rm R}$ and ${\rm S}$, there are various possibilities, including the transformations of v…
The equivalence principle and its universality enables the geometrical formulation of gravity. In the standard formulation of General Relativity á la Einstein, the gravitational interaction is geometrized in terms of the spacetime curvature. However, if we embrace the geometrical character of gravity, two alternative, though equivalent, formulations of General Relativity emerge in flat spacetimes, in which gravity is fully ascribed either to torsion or to non-metricity. The latter allows a much simpler formulation of General Relativity oblivious to the affine spacetime structure, the Coinciden…
This paper investigates the structure of gravitational singularities at the level of the connection. We show in particular that for FLRW spacetimes with particle horizons a local holonomy, which is related to a gravitational energy, becomes unbounded near the big-bang singularity. This implies the $C^{0,1}_{\mathrm{loc}}$-inextendibility of such FLRW spacetimes. Again using an unbounded local holonomy we also give a general theorem establishing the $C^{0,1}_{\mathrm{loc}}$-inextendibility of spherically symmetric weak null singularities which arise at the Cauchy horizon in the interior of blac…
We investigate here all the possible invariant metric functions under the action of various kinds of semi-direct product Poincaré subgroups and their deformed partners. The investigation exhausts the possible theoretical frameworks for the spacetime realization of Cohen-Glashow's very special relativity and the deformation very special relativity approach by Gibbons-Gomis-Pope. Within Finsler-Minkowski type of spacetime, we find that the spacetime emerge a Finsler type of geometry in most cases both for undermed Poincaré subgroup and for deformed one. We give an explanation that the rotation o…
We propose a new foliation of asymptotically Euclidean initial data sets by 2-spheres of constant spacetime mean curvature (STCMC). The leaves of the foliation have the STCMC-property regardless of the initial data set in which the foliation is constructed which asserts that there is a plethora of STCMC 2-spheres in a neighborhood of spatial infinity of any asymptotically flat spacetime. The STCMC-foliation can be understood as a covariant relativistic generalization of the CMC-foliation suggested by Huisken and Yau. We show that a unique STCMC-foliation exists near infinity of any asymptotica…
We propose a new framework for constructing geometric and physical models on nonholonomic manifolds provided both with Clifford -- Lie algebroid symmetry and nonlinear connection structure. Explicit parametrizations of generic off-diagonal metrics and linear and nonlinear connections define different types of Finsler, Lagrange and/or Riemann-Cartan spaces. A generalization to spinor fields and Dirac operators on nonholonomic manifolds motivates the theory of Clifford algebroids defined as Clifford bundles, in general, enabled with nonintegrable distributions defining the nonlinear connection. …
