Using the standard representation of the Dirac equation we show that, up to signs, there exist only TWO SETS of consistent solutions for the matrices of charge conjugation (C), parity (P), and time reversal (T). In both cases, P^2=-1, and then two succesive applications of the parity transformation to spin 1/2 fields NECESSARILY amounts to a 2πrotation. Each of these sets generates a non abelian group of sixteen elements, G_1 and G_2, which are non isomorphic subgroups of the Dirac algebra, which, being a Clifford algebra, gives a geometric nature to the generators, in particular to C. It turns out that G_1 is isomorphic to D_8 x Z_2, where D_8 is the dihedral group of eight elements (the symmetries of the square) and Z_2 is isomorphic to S^0 (the 0-sphere); while G_2 is isomorphic to a certain semidirect product of D_8 and Z_2. Instead, the corresponding quantum operators for C, P, and T generate a UNIQUE group G, which we call THE CPT GROUP OF THE DIRAC FIELD, and which is isomorphic to Q x Z_2, where Q is the quaternion group. This group, however, is compatible only with the second of the above two matrix solutions, namely with G_2, which is then called THE MATRIX CPT GROUP. It is interesting to remark that G_1, G_2, and G are the only non abelian groups of sixteen elements with three generators. Finally, the matrix groups are also given in the Weyl and Majorana representations, suitable for taking the massless limit and for describing self-conjugate fields.
We construct the inequivalent irreducible representations (IIR's) of the CPT groups of the Dirac field operator \hatψ and the electromagnetic quantum potential \hat{A}_μ. The results are valid both for free and interacting (QED) fields. Also, and for the sake of completeness, we construct the IIR's of the CPT group of the Dirac equation.
In quantum information context, the groups generated by Pauli spin matrices, and Dirac gamma matrices, are known as the single qubit Pauli group P, and two-qubit Pauli group P2, respectively. It has been found [M. Socolovsky, Int. J. Theor. Phys. 43, 1941 (2004)] that the CPT group of the Dirac equation is isomorphic to P. One introduces a two-qubit entangling orthogonal matrix S basically related to the CPT symmetry. With the aid of the two-qubit swap gate, the S matrix allows the generation of the three-qubit real Clifford group and, with the aid of the Toffoli gate, the Weyl group W(E8) is …
$P$-, $T$-, $C$-transformations of the Dirac field in the de Sitter space are studied in the framework of an automorphism set of Clifford algebras. Finite group structure of the discrete transformations is elucidated. It is shown that $CPT$ groups of the Dirac field in Minkowski and de Sitter spaces are isomorphic.
We find out that both the matrix and the operator CPT groups of the spin-3/2 field (with or without mass) are respectively isomorphic to $D_4\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $Q\times\mathbb{Z}_2$. These groups are exactly the same groups as for the Dirac field, though there is no a priori reason why they should coincide.
$CPT$ groups of higher spin fields are defined in the framework of automorphism groups of Clifford algebras associated with the complex representations of the proper orthochronous Lorentz group. Higher spin fields are understood as the fields on the Poincaré group which describe orientable (extended) objects. A general method for construction of $CPT$ groups of the fields of any spin is given. $CPT$ groups of the fields of spin-1/2, spin-1 and spin-3/2 are considered in detail. $CPT$ groups of the fields of tensor type are discussed. It is shown that tensor fields correspond to particles of th…
A group structure of the discrete transformations (parity, time reversal and charge conjugation) for spinor field in de Sitter space are studied in terms of extraspecial finite groups. Two $CPT$ groups are introduced, the first group from an analysis of the de Sitter-Dirac wave equation for spinor field, and the second group from a purely algebraic approach based on the automorphism set of Clifford algebras. It is shown that both groups are isomorphic to each other.
An algebraic description of basic discrete symmetries (space inversion P, time reversal T, charge conjugation C and their combinations PT, CP, CT, CPT) is studied. Discrete subgroups {1,P,T,PT} of orthogonal groups of multidimensional spaces over the fields of real and complex numbers are considered in terms of fundamental automorphisms of Clifford algebras. The fundamental automorphisms form a finite group of order 4. The charge conjugation is represented by a pseudoautomorphism of the Clifford algebra. Such a description allows one to extend the automorphism group. It is shown that an extend…
$CPT$ groups for spinor fields in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spaces are defined in the framework of automorphism groups of Clifford algebras. It is shown that de Sitter spaces with mutually opposite signatures correspond to Clifford algebras with different algebraic structure that induces an essential difference of $CPT$ groups associated with these spaces. $CPT$ groups for charged particles are considered with respect to phase factors on the various spinor spaces related with real subalgebras of the simple Clifford algebra over the complex field (Dirac algebra). It is shown that $CPT$ group…
Universal coverings of the orthogonal groups and their extensions are studied in terms of Clifford-Lipschitz groups. An algebraic description of basic discrete symmetries (space inversion $P$, time reversal $T$, charge conjugation $C$ and their combinations $PT$, $CP$, $CT$, $CPT$) is given. Discrete subgroups $\{1, P, T, PT\}$ of orthogonal groups of multidimensional spaces over the fields of real and complex numbers are considered in terms of fundamental automorphisms of Clifford algebras. The fundamental automorphisms form a finite group of order 4. The charge conjugation is represented by …
We study the explicit form of Poincaré and discrete transformations of flavor states in a two-flavor scalar model, which represents the simplest example of the field mixing. Because of the particular form of the flavor vacuum condensate, we find that the aforementioned symmetries are spontaneously broken. The ensuing vacuum stability group is identified with the Euclidean group E(3). With the help of Fabri-Picasso theorem, we show that flavor vacua with different time labels and in different Lorentz frames are unitarily inequivalent to each other and they constitute a manifold of zero-flavor-c…
We show that the CPT groups of QED emerge naturally from the PT and P (or T) subgroups of the Lorentz group. We also find relationships between these discrete groups and continuous groups, like the connected Lorentz and Poincaré groups and their universal coverings.
In this work we study some symplectic submanifolds in the cotangent bundle of a factorizable Lie group defined by second class constraints. By applying the Dirac method, we study many issues of these spaces as fundamental Dirac brackets, symmetries, and collective dynamics. This last item allows to study integrability as inherited from a system on the whole cotangent bundle, leading in a natural way to the AKS theory for integrable systems.
We discuss generalized Dirac strings associated with a given Lie group. They live in r-dimensional complex space (r being the rank of the group). Such strings show up in the effective Born-Oppenheimer Hamiltonian for 3d supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories, brought up by the gluon loops. We calculate accurately the number of the vacuum states in the effective Hamiltonian associated with these strings. We also show that these states are irrelevant for the final SYMCS vacuum counting. The Witten index of SYMCS theories depends thus only on the strings generated by fermion loops and ca…
The Dirac monopole problem is studied in details within the framework of infinite-dimensional representations of the rotation group, and a consistent pointlike monopole theory with an arbitrary magnetic charge is deduced.
A kind of Dirac-Connes operator defined in the framework of Connes' NCG is introduced on discrete abelian groups; it satisfies a Junk-free condition, and bridges the NCG composed by Dimakis, Müller-Hoissen and Sitarz and the NCG of Connes. Then we apply this operator to d-dimensional lattices.
We present an overview of some key results obtained in a recent series devoted to non-Hermitian quantum field theories for which we systematically modify the underlying symmetries. Particular attention is placed on the interplay between the continuous symmetry group that we alter from global to local, from Abelian to non-Abelian, from rank one to generic rank N, and the discrete anti-linear modified CPT-symmetries. The presence of the latter guarantees the reality of the mass spectrum in a certain parameter regime. We investigate the extension of Goldstone's theorem and the Higgs mechanism, wh…
A variation of Dirac equation based on SO(2,1) group is suggested for treating low dimensional systems in the three dimensional x,y,t space. Non-unitary representations are developed in an analogous way to those used in the ordinary Dirac equations and quantum field theory is developed for the present SO(2,1) relativistic equation. The theory is applied for low dimensional systems including especially holes-electrons pairs, or other two-particle states, in the low dimensional space.
We introduce some discrete analogues of the Dirac magnetic monopole on a unit sphere S^2 and explain how to compute the corresponding spectrum using the representation theory of finite groups. The main examples are certain magnetic Laplacians on the regular polyhedral graphs, coming from induced representations of the binary polyhedral groups.
Transformation properties of Dirac equation correspond to Spin(3,1) representation of Lorentz group SO(3,1), but group GL(4,R) of general relativity does not accept a similar construction with Dirac spinors. On the other hand, it is possible to look for representation of GL(4,R) in some bigger space, there Dirac spinors are formally situated as some "subsystem." In the paper is described construction of such representation, using Clifford and Grassmann algebras of 4D space.
We identify the category of integrable lowest-weight representations of the loop group LG of a compact Lie group G with the linear category of twisted, conjugation-equivariant curved Fredholm complexes on the group G: namely, the twisted, equivariant matrix factorizations of a super-potential built from the loop rotation action on LG. This lifts the isomorphism of K-groups of [FHT1,2, 3] to an equivalence of categories. The construction uses families of Dirac operators.
Within the context of infinite-dimensional representations of the rotation group the Dirac monopole problem is studied in details. Irreducible infinite-dimensional representations, being realized in the indefinite metric Hilbert space, are given by linear unbounded operators in infinite-dimensional topological spaces, supplied with a weak topology and associated weak convergence. We argue that an arbitrary magnetic charge is allowed, and the Dirac quantization condition can be replaced by a generalized quantization rule yielding a new quantum number, the so-called topological spin, which is re…
We introduce a Dirac operator $D$ for the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$, as an element of the tensor product of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ with the Clifford algebra on two generators. We study the properties of $D$, including an analogue of Vogan's conjecture. We compute the cohomology of $D$ acting on various $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-modules.
This paper develops the theory of discrete Dirac reduction of discrete Lagrange-Dirac systems with an abelian symmetry group acting on the configuration space. We begin with the linear theory and, then, we extend it to the nonlinear setting using retraction compatible charts. We consider the reduction of both the discrete Dirac structure and the discrete Lagrange-Pontryagin principle, and show that they both lead to the same discrete Lagrange-Poincaré-Dirac equations. The coordinatization of the discrete reduced spaces relies on the notion of discrete connections on principal bundles. At last,…
By following the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation of the Dirac equation, we work out the exact analytic expressions up to the $1/M^4$ order for the general cases in the covariant density functional theory. These results are further compared with the corresponding ones derived from another novel non-relativistic expansion method, the similarity renormalization group (SRG). Based on that, the origin of the difference between the results obtained by the FW transformation and SRG method is explored.
Using tools from Dirac geometry and through an explicit construction, we show that every Poisson homogeneous space of any Poisson Lie group admits an integration to a symplectic groupoid. Our theorem follows from a more general result which relates, for a principal bundle $M\to M/H$, integrations of a Dirac structure on $M/H$ to $H$-admissible integrations of its pullback Dirac structure on $M$ by pre-symplectic groupoids. Our construction gives a distinguished class of explicit real or holomorphic pre-symplectic and symplectic groupoids over semi-simple Lie groups and some of their homogeneou…
