We consider high temperature KMS states for quantum spin systems on a lattice. We prove a large deviation principle for the distribution of empirical averages $\frac{1}{|Λ|} \sum_{i\inΛ} X_i$, where the $X_i$'s are copies of a self-adjoint element $X$ (level one large deviations). From the analyticity of the generating function, we obtain the central limit theorem. We generalize to a level two large deviation principle for the distribution of $\frac{1}{|Λ|}\sum_{i\inΛ} δ_{X_i}$.
We show the full large deviation principle for KMS-states and $C^*$-finitely correlated states on a quantum spin chain. We cover general local observables. Our main tool is Ruelle's transfer operator method.
We investigate the fluctuations of the spin current for the one dimensional XX spin chain starting from the domain wall initial condition. The generating function of the current is shown to be written as a determinant with the Bessel kernel. An exact analytical expression for the large deviation function is obtained by applying the Coulomb gas method. Our results are also compared with DMRG calculations.
We prove a large deviations principle for the total spin and the number of edges under the annealed Ising measure on generalized random graphs. We also give detailed results on how the annealing over the Ising model changes the degrees of the vertices in the graph and show how it gives rise to interesting correlated random graphs.
We consider the many-body quantum evolution of a factorized initial data, in the mean-field regime. We show that fluctuations around the limiting Hartree dynamics satisfy large deviation estimates, that are consistent with central limit theorems that have been established in the last years.
We introduce the multiplicative Ising model and prove basic properties of its thermodynamic formalism such as existence of pressure and entropies. We generalize to one-dimensional "layer-unique" Gibbs measures for which the same results can be obtained. For more general models associated to a $d$-dimensional multiplicative invariant potential, we prove a large deviation theorem in the uniqueness regime for averages of multiplicative shifts of general local functions. This thermodynamic formalism is motivated by the statistical properties of multiple ergodic averages.
In this paper we extend the results of Lenci and Rey-Bellet on the large deviation upper bound of the distribution measures of local Hamiltonians with respect to a Gibbs state, in the setting of translation-invariant finite-range interactions. We show that a certain factorization property of the reference state is sufficient for a large deviation upper bound to hold and that this factorization property is satisfied by Gibbs states of the above kind as well as finitely correlated states. As an application of the methods the Chernoff bound for correlated states with factorization property is stu…
We study the projection on classical spins starting from quantum equilibria. We show Gibbsianness or quasi-locality of the resulting classical spin system for a class of gapped quantum systems at low temperatures including quantum ground states. A consequence of Gibbsianness is the validity of a large deviation principle in the quantum system which is known and here recovered in regimes of high temperature or for thermal states in one dimension. On the other hand we give an example of a quantum ground state with strong nonlocality in the classical restriction, giving rise to what we call measu…
We contribute an extension of large-deviation results obtained in [N.J.B. Aza, J.-B. Bru, W. de Siqueira Pedra, A. Ratsimanetrimanana, J. Math. Pures Appl. 125 (2019) 209] on conductivity theory at atomic scale of free lattice fermions in disordered media. Disorder is modeled by (i) a random external potential, like in the celebrated Anderson model, and (ii) a nearest-neighbor hopping term with random complex-valued amplitudes. In accordance with experimental observations, via the large deviation formalism, our previous paper showed in this case that quantum uncertainty of microscopic electric…
We give large deviation upper bounds, and discuss lower bounds, for the Gibbs-KMS state of a system of quantum spins or an interacting Fermi gas on the lattice. We cover general interactions and general observables, both in the high temperature regime and in dimension one.
We study the passive influence of quantum matter fluctuations on the expansion parameter of a congruence of timelike geodesics in a semiclassical regime. In particular, we show that, the perturbations of this parameter can be considered to be elements of the algebra of matter fields at all perturbative order. Hence, once a quantum state for matter is chosen, it is possible to explicitly evaluate the behavior of geometric fluctuations. After introducing the formalism necessary to treat similar problems, in the last part of the paper, we estimate the approximated probability of having a geodesic…
Consider a one-dimensional shift-invariant attractive spin-flip system in equilibrium, constituting a dynamic random environment, together with a nearest-neighbor random walk that on occupied sites has a local drift to the right but on vacant sites has a local drift to the left. In previous work we proved a law of large numbers for dynamic random environments satisfying a space-time mixing property called cone-mixing. If an attractive spin-flip system has a finite average coupling time at the origin for two copies starting from the all-occupied and the all-vacant configuration, respectively, t…
We develop a space-time large-deviation point of view on Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions in spin systems subject to a stochastic spin-flip dynamics. Using the general theory for large deviations of functionals of Markov processes outlined in Feng and Kurtz [11], we show that the trajectory under the spin-flip dynamics of the empirical measure of the spins in a large block in Z^d satisfies a large deviation principle in the limit as the block size tends to infinity. The associated rate function can be computed as the action functional of a Lagrangian that is the Legendre transform of a certain non-…
The theory of large deviations is already the natural language for the statistical physics of equilibrium and non-equilibrium. In the field of disordered systems, the analysis via large deviations is even more useful to describe within a unified perspective the typical events and the rare events that occur on various scales. In the present pedagogical introduction, we revisit various emblematic classical and quantum disordered systems in order to highlight the common underlying mechanisms from the point of view of large deviations.
We consider a general d-dimensional quantum system of non-interacting particles, with suitable statistics, in a very large (formally infinite) container. We prove that, in equilibrium, the fluctuations in the density of particles in a subdomain of the container are described by a large deviation function related to the pressure of the system. That is, untypical densities occur with a probability exponentially small in the volume of the subdomain, with the coefficient in the exponent given by the appropriate thermodynamic potential. Furthermore, small fluctuations satisfy the central limit theo…
We provide a stochastic interpretation of non-commutative Dirichlet forms in the context of quantum filtering. For stochastic processes motivated by quantum optics experiments, we derive an optimal finite time deviation bound expressed in terms of the non-commutative Dirichlet form. Introducing and developing new non-commutative functional inequalities, we deduce concentration inequalities for these processes. Examples satisfying our bounds include tensor products of quantum Markov semigroups as well as Gibbs samplers above a threshold temperature.
Wigner's jellium is a model for a gas of electrons. The model consists of $N$ unit negatively charged particles lying in a sea of neutralizing homogeneous positive charge spread out according to Lebesgue measure, and interactions are governed by the Coulomb potential. In this work we consider the quantum jellium on quasi-one-dimensional spaces with Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics. Using the Feynman-Kac representation, we replace particle locations with Brownian bridges. We then adapt the approach of Leblé and Serfaty (2017) to prove a process-level large deviation principle for the empirical fiel…
We consider certain self-adjoint observables for the KMS state associated to the Hamiltonian $H= σ^x \otimes σ^x$ over the quantum spin lattice $\mathbb{C}^2 \otimes \mathbb{C}^2 \otimes \mathbb{C}^2 \otimes ...$. For a fixed observable of the form $L \otimes L \otimes L \otimes ...$, where $L:\mathbb{C}^2 \to \mathbb{C}^2 $, and for the zero temperature limit one can get a naturally defined stationary probability $μ$ on the Bernoulli space $\{1,2\}^\mathbb{N}$. This probability is ergodic but it is not mixing for the shift map. It is not a Gibbs state for a continuous normalized potential but…
Open Quantum Walks (OQWs), originally introduced by S. Attal, are quantum generalizations of classical Markov chains. Recently, natural continuous time models of OQW have been developed by C. Pellegrini. These models, called Continuous Time Open Quantum Walks (CTOQWs), appear as natural continuous time limits of discrete time OQWs. In particular they are quantum extensions of continuous time Markov chains. This article is devoted to the study of homogeneous CTOQW on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. We focus namely on their associated quantum trajectories which allow us to prove a Central Limit Theorem for the …
We establish sharp deviation inequalities for the linear statistics of the 2D Coulomb gas. These imply sub-Gaussian inequalities, where the variance is given by the Dirichlet norm. The proofs use complex geometry and potential theory on Riemann surfaces and apply more generally to beta-ensembles, which also include integer Quantum Hall states on Riemann surfaces. In a sequel of the paper we give applications to large and moderate deviation principles, local laws at mesoscopic scales, quantitative Bergman kernel asymptotics. In a series of companion papers applications to concentration of measu…
Let $({\mathcal{T}}_{*t})$ be a predual quantum Markov semigroup acting on the full 2 x 2 matrix algebra and having an absorbing pure state. We prove that for any initial state $ω$, the net of orthogonal measures representing the net of states $({\mathcal{T}}_{*t}(ω))$ satisfies a large deviation principle in the pure state space, with a rate function given in terms of the generator, and which does not depend on $ω$. This implies that $({\mathcal{T}}_{*t}(ω))$ is faithful for all $t$ large enough. Examples arising in weak coupling limit are studied.
We study the coarsening model (zero-temperature Ising Glauber dynamics) on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ (for $d \geq 2$) with an asymmetric tie-breaking rule. This is a Markov process on the state space $\{-1,+1\}^{\mathbb{Z}^d}$ of "spin configurations" in which each vertex updates its spin to agree with a majority of its neighbors at the arrival times of a Poisson process. If a vertex has equally many $+1$ and $-1$ neighbors, then it updates its spin value to $+1$ with probability $q \in [0,1]$ and to $-1$ with probability $1-q$. The initial state of this Markov chain is distributed according to a product…
In this paper we propose a method to estimate the density matrix ρof a d-level quantum system by measurements on the N-fold system. The scheme is based on covariant observables and representation theory of unitary groups and it extends previous results concerning the estimation of the spectrum of ρ. We show that it is consistent (i.e. the original input state ρis recovered with certainty if N \to \infty), analyze its large deviation behavior, and calculate explicitly the corresponding rate function which describes the exponential decrease of error probabilities in the limit N \to \infty. Final…
We consider homogeneous open quantum random walks on a lattice with finite dimensional local Hilbert space and we study in particular the position process of the quantum trajectories of the walk. We prove that the properly rescaled position process asymptotically approaches a mixture of Gaussian measures. We can generalize the existing central limit type results and give more explicit expressions for the involved asymptotic quantities, dropping any additional condition on the walk. We use deformation and spectral techniques, together with reducibility properties of the local channel associated…
We analyse families of codes for classical data transmission over quantum channels that have both a vanishing probability of error and a code rate approaching capacity as the code length increases. To characterise the fundamental tradeoff between decoding error, code rate and code length for such codes we introduce a quantum generalisation of the moderate deviation analysis proposed by Altug and Wagner as well as Polyanskiy and Verdu. We derive such a tradeoff for classical-quantum (as well as image-additive) channels in terms of the channel capacity and the channel dispersion, giving further …
We prove a large deviation principle for the expectation of macroscopic observables in quantum (and classical) Gibbs states. Our proof is based on Ruelle-Lanford functions and direct subadditivity arguments, as in the classical case, instead of relying on Gärtner-Ellis theorem, and cluster expansion or transfer operators as done in the quantum case. In this approach we recover, expand, and unify quantum (and classical) large deviation results for lattice Gibbs states. In the companion paper \cite{OR} we discuss the characterization of rate functions in terms of relative entropies.
