We are solving the classical Riemann-Hilbert problem of rank N>1 on the extended complex plane punctured in 2m+2 points, for
NxN quasi-permutation monodromy matrices. Following Korotkin we solve the Riemann-Hilbert problem in terms of the Szego kernel of certain Riemann surfaces branched over the given 2m+2 points. These Riemann surfaces are constructed from a permutation representation of the symmetric group S_N to which the quasi-permutation monodromy representation has been reduced. The permutation representation of our problem generates the cyclic subgroup Z_N. For this reason the corresponding Riemann surfaces of genus N(m-1) have Z_N symmetry. This fact enables us to write the matrix entries of the solution of the NxN Riemann-Hilbert problem as a product of an algebraic function and theta-function quotients. The algebraic function turns out to be related to the Szego kernel with zero characteristics. From the solution of the Riemann- Hilbert problem we automatically obtain a particular solution of the Schlesinger system. The tau-function of the Schlesinger system is computed explicitly. The rank 3 problem with four singular points (0,t,1,\infty) is studied in detail. The corresponding solution of the Riemann-Hilbert problem and the Schlesinger system is given in terms of Jacobi's theta-function with modulus T=T(t), Im(T)>0. The function T=T(t) is invertible if it belongs to the Siegel upper half space modulo the subgroup Γ_0(3) of the modular group. The inverse function t=t(T) generates a solution of a general Halphen system.
Here we review some recent developments in the theory of isomonodromic deformations on Riemann sphere and elliptic curve. For both cases we show how to derive Schlesinger transformations together with their action on tau-function, and construct classes of solutions in terms of multi-dimensional theta-functions.
A class of Riemann-Hilbert problems corresponding to quasi-permutation monodromy matrices is solved in terms of Szegö kernel on auxiliary Riemann surfaces. The tau-function of Schlesinger system turns out to be closely related to determinant of Cauchy-Riemann operator. The link between theta-divisor and Malgrange's divisor in the theory of Schlesinger equations is established.
We study the Schlesinger system of partial differential equations in the case when the unknown matrices of arbitrary size $(p\times p)$ are triangular and the eigenvalues of each matrix form an arithmetic progression with a rational difference $q$, the same for all matrices. We show that such a system possesses a family of solutions expressed via periods of meromorphic differentials on the Riemann surfaces of superelliptic curves. We determine the values of the difference $q$, for which our solutions lead to explicit polynomial or rational solutions of the Schlesinger system. As an application…
In this paper we solve an arbitrary matrix Riemann-Hilbert (inverse monodromy) problem with quasi-permutation monodromy representations outside of a divisor in the space of monodromy data. This divisor is characterized in terms of the theta-divisor on the Jacobi manifold of an auxiliary compact Riemann surface realized as an appropriate branched covering of $\CP1$ . The solution is given in terms of a generalization of Szegö kernel on the Riemann surface. In particular, our construction provides a new class of solutions of the Schlesinger system. The isomonodromy tau-function of these solution…
In these notes we solve a class of Riemann-Hilbert (inverse monodromy) problems with quasi-permutation monodromy groups which correspond to non-singular branched coverings of $\CP1$. The solution is given in terms of Szegö kernel on the underlying Riemann surface. In particular, our construction provides a new class of solutions of the Schlesinger system. We present some results on explicit calculation of the corresponding tau-function, and describe divisor of zeros of the tau-function (so-called Malgrange divisor) in terms of the theta-divisor on the Jacobi manifold of the Riemann surface. We…
The theory of bi-orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle is developed for a general class of weights leading to systems of recurrence relations and derivatives of the polynomials and their associated functions, and to functional-difference equations of certain coefficient functions appearing in the theory. A natural formulation of the Riemann-Hilbert problem is presented which has as its solution the above system of bi-orthogonal polynomials and associated functions. In particular for the case of regular semi-classical weights on the unit circle $ w(z) = \prod^m_{j=1}(z-z_j(t))^{ρ_j} $, cons…
The classical transformation of Jacobi's theta function admits a simple proof by producing an integral representation that yields this invariance apparent. This idea seems to have first appeared in the work of S. Ramanujan. Several examples of this idea have been produced by Koshlyakov, Ferrar, Guinand, Ramanujan and others. A unifying procedure to analyze these examples and natural generalizations is presented.
For some positive integers $g$ and $n$ we consider a subgroup $\mathbb{G}_{g,n}$ of the $2g$-dimensional modular group keeping invariant a certain locus $\mathcal{W}_{g,n}$ in the Siegel upper half plane of degree $g$. We address the problem of describing a fundamental domain for the modular action of the subgroup on $\mathcal{W}_{g,n}$. Our motivation comes from geometry: $g$ and $n$ represent the genus and the number of ovals of a generic real Riemann surface of separated type; the locus $\mathcal{W}_{g,n}$ contains the corresponding period matrix computed with respect to some specific basis…
In this paper we prove the existence and uniqueness of a topological quantum field theory that incorporates, for all Riemann surfaces, the corresponding spaces of theta functions and the actions of the Heisenberg groups and modular groups on them.
The analytic contribution to the low energy expansion of Type II string amplitudes at genus-one is a power series in space-time derivatives with coefficients that are determined by integrals of modular functions over the complex structure modulus of the world-sheet torus. These modular functions are associated with world-sheet vacuum Feynman diagrams and given by multiple sums over the discrete momenta on the torus. In this paper we exhibit exact differential and algebraic relations for a certain infinite class of such modular functions by showing that they satisfy Laplace eigenvalue equations…
We consider the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann $ζ$-function and two classes of $L$-functions; Dirichlet $L$-functions and those based on level one modular forms. We show that there are an infinite number of zeros on the critical line in one-to-one correspondence with the zeros of the cosine function, and thus enumerated by an integer $n$. From this it follows that the ordinate of the $n$-th zero satisfies a transcendental equation that depends only on $n$. Under weak assumptions, we show that the number of solutions of this equation already saturates the counting formula on the entire critic…
We introduce a new approach to find the Tomita-Takesaki modular flow for multi-component regions in general chiral conformal field theory. Our method is based on locality and analyticity of primary fields as well as the so-called Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) condition. These features can be used to transform the problem to a Riemann-Hilbert problem on a covering of the complex plane cut along the regions, which is equivalent to an integral equation for the matrix elements of the modular Hamiltonian. Examples are considered.
We consider a smooth groupoid of the form Σ\rtimesΓwhere Σis a Riemann surface and Γa discrete pseudogroup acting on Σby local conformal diffeomorphisms. After defining a K-cycle on the crossed product C_0(Σ)\rtimesΓgeneralising the classical Dolbeault complex, we compute its Chern character in cyclic cohomology, using the index theorem of Connes and Moscovici. This involves in particular a generalisation of the Euler class constructed from the modular automorphism group of the von Neumann algebra L^{\infty}(Σ)\rtimesΓ.
Solutions to a class of differential systems that generalize the Halphen system are determined in terms of automorphic functions whose groups are commensurable with the modular group. These functions all uniformize Riemann surfaces of genus zero and have $q$--series with integral coefficients. Rational maps relating these functions are derived, implying subgroup relations between their automorphism groups, as well as symmetrization maps relating the associated differential systems.
Bogomolny-Leyvraz-Schmit (1996) and Peter (2002) proposed an asymptotic formula for the correlation of the multiplicities in length spectrum on the modular surface, and Lukianov (2007) extended its asymptotic formula to the Riemann surfaces derived from the congruence subgroup $\Gam_0(n)$ and the quaternion type co-compact arithmetic groups. The coefficients of the leading terms in these asymptotic formulas are described in terms of Euler products over prime numbers, and they appear in eigenvalue statistic formulas found by Rudnick (2005) and Lukianov (2007) for the Laplace-Beltrami operators …
The equality between the number of odd spin structures on a Riemann surface of genus g, with $2^g - 1$ being a Mersenne prime, and the even perfect numbers, is an indication that the action of the modular group on the set of spin structures has special properties related to the sequence of perfect numbers. A method for determining whether Mersenne numbers are primes is developed by using a geometrical representation of these numbers. The connection between the non-existence of finite odd perfect numbers and the irrationality of the square root of twice the product of a sequence of repunits is …
Compact Riemann surfaces and their abelian functions are instrumental to solve integrable equations; more recently the representation theory of the Monster and related modular form have pointed to the relevance of $τ$-functions, which are in turn connected with a specific type of abelian function, the (Kleinian) $σ$-function. This paper proposes a construction of $σ$-functions based on the nature of the Weierstrass semigroup at one point of the Riemann surface as a generalization of the construction of plane affine models of the Riemann surface. Because our definition is algebraic, we are able…
We examine an unstudied manuscript of N.~S.~Koshliakov over $150$ pages long and containing the theory of two interesting generalizations $ζ_p(s)$ and $η_p(s)$ of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$, which we call \emph{Koshliakov zeta functions}. His theory has its genesis in a problem in the analytical theory of heat distribution which was analyzed by him. In this paper, we further build upon his theory and obtain two new modular relations in the setting of Koshliakov zeta functions, each of which gives an infinite family of identities, one for each $p\in\mathbb{R^{+}}$. The first one is a gene…
Generalized Halphen systems are solved in terms of functions that uniformize genus zero Riemann surfaces, with automorphism groups that are commensurable with the modular group. Rational maps relating these functions imply subgroup relations between their automorphism groups and symmetrization relations between the associated differential systems.
We study theta functions of a Riemann surface of genus g from the view point of tau function of a hierarchy of soliton equations. We study two kinds of series expansions. One is the Taylor expansion at any point of the theta divisor. We describe the initial term of the expansion by the Schur function corresponding to the partition determined by the gap sequence of a certain flat line bundle. The other is the expansion of the theta function and its certain derivatives in one of the variables on the Abel-Jacobi images of k points on a Riemann surface with k less than or equal to g. We determine …
We revisit the definition of the 6j-symbols from the modular double of U_q(sl(2,R)), referred to as b-6j symbols. Our new results are (i) the identification of particularly natural normalization conditions, and (ii) new integral representations for this object. This is used to briefly discuss possible applications to quantum hyperbolic geometry, and to the study of certain supersymmetric gauge theories. We show, in particular, that the b-6j symbol has leading semiclassical asymptotics given by the volume of a non-ideal tetrahedron. We furthermore observe a close relation with the problem to qu…

We demonstrate that the Riemann zeta function zeros define the position and the widths of the resonances of the quantised Artin dynamical system. The Artin dynamical system is defined on the fundamental region of the modular group on the Lobachevsky plane. It has a finite volume and an infinite extension in the vertical direction that correspond to a cusp. In classical regime the geodesic flow in the fundamental region represents one of the most chaotic dynamical systems, has mixing of all orders, Lebesgue spectrum and non-zero Kolmogorov entropy. In quantum-mechanical regime the system can be…
